About the author

V. J. James was born in Changanassery, Kottayam, Kerala, India. He attended St.Theresa's Higher Secondary School, Vazhappally and St. Mary's Higher Secondary School, Champakulam, before studying at St. Berchmans College, Changanacherry. He has a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mar Athanasius College of Engineering. He currently works for Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, as an engineer.
He is known for his unique style of presenting subjects in Malayalam literature world. His first book, Purapaadinte Pusthakam (പുറപ്പാടിന്റെ പുസ്തകം), was published by DC Books as the winning novel in the novel competition which was conducted as a part of the 25th anniversary celebration of DC Books in 1999. Malayalam film Munthirivallikal Thalirkkumbol (English: When the Grapevines Sprout) loosely based on the short story Pranayopanishath by V. J. James. His style of narration gained much attention and praise.

ബഹിരാകാശ ഗവേഷണവുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട് മലയാളത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായി എഴുതപ്പെട്ട നോവൽ ആണ് ലെയ്ക്ക. ഒരു സാഹചര്യത്തിൽ വളരെക്കാലം ജോലി ചെയ്യുമ്പോൾ നമുക്ക് ആ സാഹചര്യങ്ങളോടും സഹപ്രവർത്തകരോടും ഒരു അടുപ്പം ഉണ്ടാകില്ലേ. അത്തരത്തിൽ ഒരു ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനും അദ്ദേഹം പഠനവിധേയമാക്കിയ ജീവിയുടെയും ആത്മബന്ധത്തിന്റെ കഥയാണിത്.
ഇത് അവളുടെ കഥയാണ്. തെരുവ് നായകളുടെ കൂട്ടത്തിൽ നിന്നും തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കപ്പെട്ടു റഷ്യൻ ബഹിരാകാശ കുതിപ്പിന്റെ ഭാഗമായ ലെയ്ക്കയുടെ കഥ.

ജോലിസംബന്ധമായ യാത്രയ്ക്കിടയിൽ കഥാകൃത്ത് വിമാനത്താവളത്തിൽ വെച്ചു കണ്ടുമുട്ടുന്ന ഡെനിസോവിച്ച്. മാസങ്ങൾക്കു ശേഷം ഡെനിസോവിച്ചിന്റെ കുറെ കുറിപ്പുകൾ കഥാകൃത്തിനെ തേടിയെത്തുന്നു ആ കുറിപ്പുകളിലൂടെ ലെയ്ക്കയും അവളെ പരിശീലിപ്പിച്ച പരീക്ഷണശാലയും അവിടെ ഡെനിസോവിച്ചും ലെയ്കയും തമ്മിലുള്ള ആത്മബന്ധവും നേരിട്ട് കാണാതെ ലെയ്‌ക്കയെ സ്നേഹിച്ച പ്രിയങ്കയും ഒക്കെ നമുക്ക് മുന്നിലെത്തുന്നു.

ആദ്യമായി ഭൂമിയെ ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്ത ജീവി എന്ന ചോദ്യത്തിന് ഉത്തരത്തിന് ഉപരിയായി പലപ്പോഴും നമ്മൾ മറന്നു പോയ ലെയ്ക്കയുടെ ദാരുണമായ അന്ത്യ നിമിഷങ്ങളിലേക്ക് കൂടിയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം നമ്മെ കൂട്ടിക്കൊണ്ടു പോകുന്നത്. ബഹിരാകാശത്തെ അതിതീവ്ര സാഹചര്യങ്ങളോട് പോരാടി മരിച്ച ലെയ്ക്കയും അവളെ ഒത്തിരി സ്നേഹിച്ചു ഒടുവിൽ ആ മരണം നൽകിയ ആഘാതത്തിൽ ജീവൻവെടിഞ്ഞ പ്രിയങ്കയും പ്രിയപ്പെട്ടവരുടെ വേർപാടിന്റെ ജീവിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന സ്മാരകം ആയ ഡെനിസോവിച്ചും ഒക്കെ ഒരു നൊമ്പരം ആയി മാറുന്നു.
ആത്മാവ് എന്നൊന്ന് ഉണ്ടെങ്കിൽ ഇന്നും ഭൂമിയെ ഭ്രമണം ചെയ്യുന്ന പേടകത്തിന്റെ അവശിഷ്ടത്തിൽ എവിടെയോ കുടുങ്ങി കിടന്നു ലെയ്ക്കയും അതിനു കോടിക്കണക്കിന് പ്രകാശവര്ഷം അകലെ ഒരു നക്ഷത്രമായി പ്രിയങ്കയും നമ്മെ ഇപ്പോഴും നോക്കുന്നുണ്ടാവാം.

പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ പല വിധമാണ്. ചില പുസ്തകങ്ങൾ വായിച്ച് മടക്കിയാൽ പിന്നെ അതിനെ പറ്റി ഓർക്കണം എന്നില്ല. എന്നാൽ ചിലത്, വായിച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞാലും അതിങ്ങനെ മനസ്സിനെ വേട്ടയാടി കൊണ്ടിരിക്കും. അങ്ങനെ എന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ വായനക്ക് ശേഷവും സ്ഥാനം പിടിച്ചിരിക്കുകയാണ് വി ജെ ജെയിംസ് രചിച്ച ലെയ്ക.

വളരെ ചെറിയ ഒരു പുസ്തകമാണിത്. നൂറ് പേജിൽ താഴെയേയുള്ളു. പക്ഷേ എന്റെ മനസ്സിൽ ആഴത്തിൽ പതിഞ്ഞു പോയ കുറച്ച് ആളുകളും അവരുടെ ജീവിതവും ഉണ്ട്‌ അതിൽ.
സ്കൂളിലൊക്കെ ക്വിസ് മത്സരത്തിന് ഉത്തരമെഴുതാൻ പഠിച്ചു വെച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്, ഭൂമിയുടെ ഭ്രമണപഥത്തിലെത്തിയ ആദ്യത്തെ ജീവി ഒരു നായയാണ്. അവളുടെ പേര് ലെയ്ക എന്നാണ്. അതിനപ്പുറം ഒന്നുമറിയില്ല.എന്നാൽ ആ യാത്രയുടെ പിന്നിൽ ഒരുപാടു കഥകളുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. സ്നേഹത്തിന്റെ, കണ്ണീരിന്റെ, ക്രൂരതയുടെ, നിഷ്കളങ്കതയുടെ..
ജോലിയുടെ ആവശ്യത്തിനായി വിദേശത്തു പോയ എഴുത്തുകാരൻ ഫ്രാൻസിലെ എയർപോർട്ടിൽ വെച്ച് ഡെനിസോവിച്ച് എന്ന ഒരു അന്തരീക്ഷ ശാസ്ത്രഞ്ജനെ കണ്ടു മുട്ടുന്നു. അപ്രതീക്ഷിതമായ ആ സമാഗമം എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ ജീവിതത്തെ മാറ്റി മറിച്ച ചില അനുഭവങ്ങളുടെ മുന്നോടിയായിരുന്നു. ഡെനിസോവിച്ചിനും ഭാര്യ നടാഷയ്ക്കും എഴുത്തുകാരന്റെ മൂന്നരവയസുകാരിയായ മകളുമായി ചെറിയ സമയത്തിനുള്ളിൽ തന്നെ ഒരു ആത്മബന്ധം ഉണ്ടാവുന്നു. അവളോടുള്ള വാത്സല്യം വഴി അവർ പരസ്പരം വളരെ കുറച്ച് നേരം മാത്രം സംസാരിക്കുന്നു.. ആദ്യമായും അവസാനമായും.

പിന്നീട് നാളുകൾ കഴിയുമ്പോൾ എഴുത്തുകാരന് നടഷയുടെ ഒരു കത്ത് വരുന്നു, ഒപ്പം ഡെനിസോവിച്ച് എഴുതിയ ചില കുറിപ്പുകളും. ആ റഷ്യൻ കുറിപ്പുകളുടെ വിവർത്തനമാണ് ഈ കൃതി.

ഒരു ജീവിയെ ഭൂമിയുടെ ഭ്രമണപഥത്തിൽ എത്തിക്കുക എന്ന ലക്ഷ്യത്തിൽ സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയൻ തയ്യാറാക്കിയ സ്പുട്നിക് 2 മിഷനിൽ ഭാഗമായിരുന്നു ഡെനിസോവിച്ച്. ആ യാത്രയ്ക്കുള്ള നറുക്ക് വീണത് മൂന്ന് വയസുള്ള ഒരു പെൺ നായക്കായിരുന്നു. ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞർ അവളെ ലെയ്ക എന്ന് വിളിച്ചു. ആർക്കും ഇഷ്ടം തോന്നുന്ന പ്രകൃതവും,ശാന്ത സ്വഭാവവുമുള്ളവളും ധൈര്യവതിയും ആയിരുന്നു ലെയ്ക. കഠിനമായ പരിശീലനങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷം 1957നവംബർ3-ന്, പിൽക്കാല ബഹിരാകാശ ഗവേഷണങ്ങൾക്ക് വഴികാട്ടാനായി ലെയ്ക മടക്കമില്ലാത്ത യാത്ര തിരിച്ചു. എന്നാൽ ഒന്നുമറിയാതെ മരണത്തിലേക്ക് ഉത്സാഹത്തോട് കൂടി പോയ ആ ജീവനെ സ്നേഹിച്ചയാളാണ് ഡെനിസോവിച്ച്. തന്റെ മകൾ പ്രിയങ്കയോടുള്ള സ്നേഹം ആ ജീവിയിലേക്കും അയാൾ പകർന്നു.ഒടുവിൽ ലെയ്ക നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളിൽ അലിഞ്ഞു ചേർന്നപ്പോൾ അവളുടെ ഓർമകളിൽ തകർന്ന് അയാളുടെ പിഞ്ചു മകളും യാത്രയായി.

ലെയ്കയും പ്രിയങ്കയും ആകാശത്തെ രണ്ടു നക്ഷത്രങ്ങളായി കളിച്ചുല്ലസിച്ചു രസിക്കുന്നുണ്ടാവും, ഇടയ്ക്ക് നമ്മളെ നോക്കുന്നുണ്ടാവും എന്ന് ഞാൻ വിശ്വസിക്കുന്നു.. #laika

1957 ൽ സ്പുട്നിക് - 2 എന്ന ബഹിരാകാശ പേടകത്തിൽ ലെയ്ക എന്ന നായയേയും സോവിയറ്റ് വിക്ഷേപിച്ചിരുന്നു. ബഹിരാകാശത്തിലേക്ക് പറന്നുയർന്ന് ചരിത്രം സൃഷ്ടിച്ച ലെയ്കയെ മാത്രമേ എല്ലാവർക്കും അറിയുന്നു. പക്ഷേ അതിനുവേണ്ടി ആ ജീവി സഹിച്ച യാതനകൾ മറയ്ക്കപ്പെട്ടും. അതോടൊപ്പം തന്നെ ആ ജീവിയോട് മനുഷ്യർ കാണിച്ച ക്രൂരത വളരെ വലുതായിരുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ജീവൻ നിലനിർത്താൻ ആവശ്യമായ തോന്നും മനുഷ്യൻ ചെയ്തിരുന്നില്ല. ലെയ്ക്കയുടെ മാത്രം കഥയല്ല ഇത്. പ്രിയങ്ക എന്ന മകളെ ഒരുപാട് സ്നേഹിച്ച ഒരു ബഹിരാകാശ ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞന്റെ കൂടെ കഥയാണിത്.

ഒരു യാത്രയ്ക്കിടയിൽ, എയർപോർട്ടിൽ വെച്ച് ഡെനിസോവിച്ചിനെയും അയാളുടെ ഭാര്യയേയും പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നു കഥാകൃത്ത്. അവർ കഥാകൃത്തിന്റെ മകളെ കൊഞ്ചിക്കുന്നു, യാത്ര പറഞ്ഞു പിരിയുമ്പോൾ അവരുടെ കണ്ണിൽ ദുഃഖം ശേഷിക്കുന്നു. കുറെ ദിവസങ്ങൾ കഴിഞ്ഞു, കഥാകൃത്തിനു ഡെനിസോവിച്ചിൽ നിന്നും കത്തുകൾ കിട്ടുന്നു, അതിന്റെ ഉള്ളടക്കമാണ് ബാക്കിയുള്ള കഥ.

സോവിയറ്റു യൂണിയനും അമേരിക്കയും തമ്മിൽ ഉള്ള സ്പേസ് യുദ്ധത്തിൽ, സോവിയറ്റ് മുന്നിൽ നിൽക്കുന്ന കാലഘട്ടം. ലെയ്ക്കയെ ബഹിരാകാശ സഞ്ചാരത്തിന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാൻ കാരണം, അതിന്റെ അനുസരണയും, ഭാരമില്ലായ്മയും, സ്പേസ്-ഫുഡിനോട് അതിനുള്ള വിമുഖതയില്ലായ്മയാണ്. ലെയ്ക്കയെ പരിശീലിപ്പിച്ചു കൊണ്ട് ഡെനിസോവിച്ച അതുമായി അടുക്കുന്നു. ലെയ്‌ക്കയുടെ കഥകൾ കേൾക്കുന്ന അയാളുടെ മകൾ പ്രിയാങ്കക്ക് ലെയ്ക്കയുമായി ഒരു ആത്മബന്ധം ഉണ്ടാകുന്നു. ലെയ്കയുമായി അടുത്ത് കഴിഞ്ഞ ഡെനിസോവിചിന് , അവളുടെ വിജയകരമായ ബഹിരാകാശ യാത്രയിൽ തന്റെ സഹപ്രവർത്തകരെ പോലെ സന്തോഷിക്കാൻ കഴിയുന്നില്ലാ. പ്രിയങ്കയാണെന്ക്കിൽ ലെയ്ക്കയുടെ തിരിച്ചു വരവിനെ കാത്തിരിക്കുന്നു.

ഒരിക്കലും മായാത്ത നോവാണ് ലെയ്ക്ക 💔🐕

ഭാര്യ നടാഷയും മകൾ പ്രിയങ്കയും അടങ്ങുന്ന റഷ്യൻ കുടുംബത്തിന്റെ നാഥനാണ് ഡെനിസോവിച്ച്. പൊതുജീവിതത്തിൽ അയാൾ സോവിയറ്റ് യൂണിയൻ്റെ ബഹിരാകാശ പരീക്ഷണങ്ങൾക്ക് നേതൃത്വം നൽകുന്ന ഒരു ശാസ്ത്രജ്ഞനാണ്. ദിവസവും കഥ കേൾക്കാനാഗ്രഹിക്കുന്ന മകൾക്ക് ശൂന്യാകാശപരീക്ഷണത്തിനായി തങ്ങൾ തെരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത ലെയ്ക്ക് എന്ന നായ്ക്കുട്ടിയുടെ സംഭവങ്ങളാണ് അയാൾ നൽകിപ്പോന്നത്. അതിൽ അയാൾ പ്രതീക്ഷിക്കാത്ത ഒരു ദുരന്തം പതിയി രിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. This is the 1st time Iam reading VJ. And liked the way he writes. The words seem to go straight to the heart. Now about the book Leika.... Novelite is a better word for it than a novel.. Mixing together the truths and fiction it was a really touching read. It gives us a glimpse of the emptiness of life without our loved ones...

Laika is very small novel (hardly 100 pages) mixed up with facts and fiction in equal proportions.

Nice attempt by the author. It's quite informative in terms of the situation surrounding the 'Laika being sent' event. A nice little read. The narration is also good in Storytel.

ലളിതവും ഹൃദയസ്പർശിയുമായ ഒരു നോവൽ

What a gut punch of a novella.
Short, thrumming with the power of imagination, well written - and about a topic close to my heart.

So, as the title suggests, this one’s about the stray dog that literally shot to fame by shooting up into the stars. Yes, Laika is indeed about the first dog that went up into the space, launched in Sputnik-2 by the Russians, in that mad race to show up their Cold War enemies, US. But this is not the mega epic story of world powers locking horns. Instead, what we get is an emotional, heartfelt story about a father's love for his daughter.

Apparently this is a story based on the author's childhood experience - specifically, Class 4 memories of having read up about this incident for the first time. It’s written from the pov of a junior space engineer at the Russian space Center. Who, due to his 4 year old daughter, has come to care for Laika, the dog selected for the experiment due to smaller size and agreeable nature. It’s cruel, that the rest of the world only looked at her as an experiment that would launch bigger things for mankind.

V J James expertly plucks our emotional strings like a maestro, stringing us along on the father's dire journey as he has to come back home to his beloved daughter and explain to her about this hapless dog; little more than an experiment for the scientists and that Laika would not, unfortunately, survive this journey into space. She was never to come back. It's a gut wrenching moment and VJ James doesn't overplay his hand in writing that scene. We squirm in anguish, at the father's wretched guilt, when trying to answer his daughter's questions. Her anguish on realizing the truth, soon turns into something tragic.

The story is written in an epistolary style, a correspondence between an Indian space scientist who meets the father years later in the Paris airport. A fleeting meeting that leaves a deep impact. We as readers are left questioning whether it is an actual Russian work of literature that we are reading about and whether this whole work is a translation. But that doesn't take anything away from this powerful little novella that takes one of the biggest moment of mankind's conquest of space and then peels away the layers to reveal a humane story about a dog, the girl who loved it and the father who loved the girl. A must read.

PS. I listened to the Malayalam audio book version of the book. It was brilliantly narrated!
