I will be reading more from Jennifer soon because this book is amazing! I loved all the dynamics between the characters, whether they were primary, secondary or even minor characters. All of them impacted the flow of the novel and make it work effortlessly. I really loved how patient James was with Carly and wish I could find someone like that in real life (a girl can dream). Definitely will read the 2nd novel and more to come from this (hopefully) series.

Oh this book had such great potential and for the majority of the book, it was a 5 star read for me! Right up until the 70% mark and then the story got into a bit of a lull and dragged on a bit for me.

That said, HOLY CRAP did I ever love the way that James treated Carly and her son Jack. I'm a single mom with no father in the picture and holy crap did I fall head over freaking heels for James! He was patient and attentive and did everything he could for her while respecting her need to take things slow.

Carly's relationship with her son is exactly what I want for me and my son and I hope and pray that when Hunter is 16 he will stand his ground and protect me the way Jack did for his mom. And They way that James stepped in without being asked and helped raise Jack his own? I was just over here like a baby crying these happy tears because that family deserved it so much.

The resolution of this story was just too fast for me. I wanted more, I felt like it needed more time to wrap up than it did. Otherwise, this story was perfection!

A Better Place by Jennifer Van Wyk is a second-chance-at-love novel.

"The reason I never moved on was because you were my only chance at moving on, and I simply hadn’t met you yet.”

James and Carly have both experienced tragedy in their lives. Each scenario has been different, but the end result the same. Neither are looking for love. They are just living. One day at a time. One more moment alone.

"A man’s heart, when it’s full of malevolence, tends to seep into the outside."

It's true that the first moments on a book can make or break it for a reader. How about when the first moments make you gasp, shutter, cringe, and fume? Oh my gosh! Vindication blinded my vision and I knew that, for Carly's sake, things had to pick up in her life. She was worth more, and I couldn't wait for her to find it.

"Well, there go my ovaries."

Once again, Author Jennifer Van Wyk created a warm, family-filled and fun environment with lovable characters that just made me feel at home. I loved that Carly was a fragile, real-to-life character. I connected to her with such ease, like a long-time friend. James was his own natural attraction, with his migratory southern ways, his rockin' bod, and sweet and tangy way with Carly. He was one of those male characters that you fall for...every five seconds in the story. He was absolutely the most perfect elixir for Carly's lack of male companionship.

"I’m falling, baby. Hard.” “Yeah?” “I am. You feeling any of that?” “All of that,” she tells me, her voice trembling. “I’m really glad.” “I’m sorry for making you question that. I’m sorry for making you wait.” “Worth every single moment of wait, Carly. Every single one.”

It was endearing to see more mature love, young love, renewed love, and fresh love displayed throughout the story. When Carly and James finally gave all of themselves to one another, it was a spiritual moment. Such beauty and devotion.

"He knows he has my heart, and he’s never going to give it back. And I know I have his, and I hope like hell he sees the same thing in my eyes."

I absolutely LOVED this story. A Better Place was filled with family and fun, smiles and laughter, heat and passion. It was a refreshing novel that gave a cherished second chance at love to two characters who had my heart from page one. I swooned CONTINUALLY for James and was elated for Carly that she was given the gift of this amazing man.

"For years I gave my heart only to Lily. I kept myself closed off, not allowing anyone in. But what I didn’t know was that I was just in a holding pattern, waiting for Carly. Waiting for us both to be in… a better place."

I loved Jennifer's debut and she hooked me right away. A Better Place is even better! James Cole is the hottest single father ever written; gorgeous, funny, and huge heart with enough love to heal Carly's wounds. This is a beautifully written second chance story for them both. The family of friends that surround them is also pretty easy to fall for. I hope they all get their own stories (especially Grady and Jack).

I can't wait to see what else she has in store for us!

Seriously. I love Jennifer Van Wyk.
This is my second by her and I loved it!
James... what a sweet, sweet soul.

I have to warn you readers though... these are a little slow to get to the relationship. They’re friends, they stay in a platonic place for a bit. BUT it’s all because of their backstory.
This is real. This isn’t an unrealistic fantasy. Carly was verbally, emotionally, physically abused by her husband. She came out of that situation stronger, wiser, better but that didn’t mean that she was going to jump into bed with the first man that made her feel like she finally wanted more. She waited. And that’s why I say it’s a little slow but that doesn’t take away from the story. You know the characters. You see them build a friendship. You feel them connect. You’re with them through it all.

I will start by saying I loved From the Ground Up and couldn't wait for this one. And ... I loved this even more.

Carly ... single mom to Jack and school teacher. And she has a secret that she wants no one to know!

James ... a single dad who is visiting his hometown and staying with his sister's kids while she and her hubby are on a trip.

They meet at school where she "falls" for James. Okay, she actually falls INTO James (his crotch to be specific). Fireworks go off but she is afraid and not wanting to get involved.

God bless James for being patient and kind. (Note: You will fall in love with James!).

Such a sweet wonderful love story that shows us there really are "good guys", real gentlemen out there and to never give up on finding love.

I recieved an advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.

This story was a nice change from the stories that are really popular now. James and Carly are both sweet and funny and meant to be together. James is really caring and doesn't push Carly after her past.
I really enjoyed the surrounding characters and will most likely look up those books. This was my first book by this author and was pleasantly surprised.

I loved A Better Place by Jennifer Van Wyk. It was such a beautiful story of second chances, love, friendships and finding a better place. This is an emotional read and some heartbreaking moments, but overall, just such a beautiful story.

Carly Hanson and her son, Jack, have a secret. A secret they guard closely. They have rebuilt their lives and learned how to count on each other only. With a past that haunts Carly, she is struggling to find her confidence, but what she does not see is how strong she really is. She is so giving, sweet and caring.

James Cole’s life changed when his wife walked out of his and his young daughter’s life. Being a single dad with a small child, she became his first priority. Now that she is grown, he is ready for more. He is following his dream, but the last thing he expected was the beautiful woman that literally fell into his life. I loved James. Considering the hurt he must have felt when his wife walked out, he is such a good man with a huge heart. He was strong, protective, possessive, caring and loving.

One look at Carly and James knows she was everything. Their spark was instant and intense. But Carly is not ready for more, so she friend-zoned James. James decides he wants something rather than nothing and sets out to get to know Carly and her son. He was perfect. He slowly broke down her walls and showed Jack what a man should be.

James stole my heart in this book. He was perfect. I loved how patient and caring James was with Carly. He gave her the time to get to know him and trust him. He was always honest of where he hoped they could go, but let her set the pace. And his relationship with Jack was so sweet.

I could not put this book down. I loved seeing a story about an older couple that knows how to have fun together and get to know each other throughout the story. This was a slow burn story that will draw you in. I loved all the characters and the story. A great read!

4.5 stars. Read and reviewed for Sultry Sirens Book Blog.

I admire JVW books because they're not your normal romance. She writes about older characters with real problems. She shows their struggles but also shows how they work together to overcome whatever obstacles face them. That's the case with A Better Place. This is a spin off of JVW's first novel From The Ground Up. We get a nice mix of characters from book 1 but this novel is focused on James and Carly, two souls floating through life happily. But when they meet, they realize their lives had been sorely lacking. Carly holds back for good reason and James is as patient as a person could be. JVW has a great ability to make you feel a part of these characters lives. She deals with serious issues wrapped in a wonderful romance. A Better Place is a great mix of romance, drama, intrigue, and humor. I can't wait for more reads from JVW. She's a fresh breath of air in the indie world.

4 stars!

I love this book! A single parent romance with mature characters (both in their 40s) that is beautifully sweet and packed with emotion.

Quick disclaimer: Jennifer Van Wyk’s first novels are publicised as standalones, but be aware that they all tie in together. You could read this one on its own, but there is a lot of character crossover, and I recommend reading them in publication order in order to fully follow the dynamics:
1. From the Ground Up
2. A Better Place
3. Feels Like Home
4. Waiting for Her

This is James and Carly’s book. James is the brother of Tess from book #1, and he is a single father to a 20-year-old daughter, Lily. Carly is new-ish to town, and is the teacher of James’ first-grader niece. An embarrassing encounter during school drop off sparks a wild attraction that takes them both by surprise, and puts them on a path that neither of them were expecting.

James has been on his own since his ex-wife walked out when his daughter was only three, and since then he has put his life on hold to be there for his girl. Now that she’s off in College, he’s at a point where he’s looking to pursue his own dreams, and that includes the woman that he can’t get out of his mind.

Carly experienced hell in her marriage. Emotionally abused for years, her history has understandably left her extremely skittish around men, but she can’t deny her mad attraction to James, and he makes it clear that he feels exactly the same way. He recognises that she’s been through something awful and that she’s terrified of getting involved, but he is sweet, patient and caring, and with the promise of “friends only” while they get to know each other, they begin a sweet and easy friendship.

“I’d really, really like the chance to get to know you better.”
“You would?”
“I would.”
“But…why?”
“Why?”
“Yeah. Why? I mean, I’m nothing…””
“You’re everything.”
“You don’t even know me.”
“And yet I already know that you’re everything.”

Things actually move pretty quickly between them, but it feels like a slow burn as they slowly get to know and become comfortable with each other, and we get to watch each little stage as their relationship develops. Though they declare themselves friends, there is so much more between them from the very start, and all of those feelings build beautifully as they open up to each other, and though he takes things slowly, James is open about what he is feeling and what he wants, and it’s so freaking gorgeous!

“Don’t be nervous around me. Don’t be afraid to be yourself.”
“I’m not…” She begins to protest, but I stop her by pressing my thumb against her lips.
“Yeah, you are. But we’ll get there. I promise, one day…” I lean closer to her. “…one day we’ll get there. Together.”

I love James. He is sweet, funny, and just such a good guy, and I adored him pretty much instantly. And Carly is a wonderful character. She’s overcome so much, and her mix of strength and vulnerability was understandable and really well written. I loved them individually, and I loved them together, and when you add their kids to the mix – particularly a very protective, yet still traumatised 16 year old Jack – it’s a beautiful dynamic. James and Jack together absolutely melted my heart, and I love the relationship that they develop.

The characters from the previous book, and the next book, are all a big part of the story, with wild family gatherings, drunken girls’ night outs, and manly chats adding a lot of fun. This is such a great group, all very tightly bound together, and I loved seeing them all encouraging James and Carly along the way.

“I’m falling, baby. Hard.”
“Yeah?”
“I am. You feeling any of that?”
“All of that.”

There is a bit of drama, but it’s all external to the relationship, and doesn’t really come as a surprise. It’s handled well, and creates great opportunity for character and relationship developments, and it works really well with the love story, with James and Carly standing strong in the face of it all.

“She’s it for me. She’s everything. No doubt about it. And I’ll protect her with every last breath I have in me if I have to.”

I love a grown-up, functional romance, and that is exactly what this book is. James and Carly are open and honest, they tease and laugh and are all-in with each other, even while keeping things friendly. Their romance is sweet, sexy and swoony with all the feels, and I loved this one!

4 stars.

When I first discovered Jennifer Van Wyk a few months ago (after reading From the Ground Up- if you haven't read it, then get to it!), she has become a one-click author for me. Her books have serious and realistic plots that many can relate with. A Better Place hit the mark!

A Better Place tells the story of James and Carly, who meet when James drops off his niece at school. Both of them are single parents who haven't been out there trying to find love, but are suddenly overcome with feelings that they can't deny. But their pasts haven't completely gone away, and they have a lot to work through.

The characters that Jennifer Van Wyk write are like friends and people you know (or would like to get to know). It was great catching up with Tess and Barrett and their brood, as well as all their quirkiness. This was a great (really great!) book!! I cannot wait to read Andy and Christine's story next!!

This was my first read from Ms. Van Wyk. I was blown away from the start, the prologue was just like BAM! This is happening, my heart was racing and didn’t stop for quite some time.

There’s always that unknown when you start a book by a new author that you have never read. Am I going to like it? Are they going to be able to catch my attention? Well, I can say, Ms. Van Wyk accomplished all of that and more.

The strength that Carly and her son, Jack, possess is amazing. Yes, they are only characters in a book, but when an author is able to make you feel every emotion that the characters experience means they have done their job. Then to introduce a new element into the equation, that element being a man, well, all bets are off to what is going to happen.

I look forward to reading more from Ms. Van Wyk.

AMAZING read!! Carly has been to hell and back because of her ex. She and her son Jack left Vince, the "man" she was married to, and built new lives for themselves far, far away. Carly built walls, no, towers,
around herself so she would never be hurt again. And then she meets James. James seems to have the power to dismantle the tower.
I hate that Jack had to grow up too fast because of
his "dad", but I absolutely LOVE how he was able to help his mom become stronger. He helped her see that she would be able to take care of herself if she ever needed to.
This book was real, emotionally charged. This book is real life. Unfortunately I think too many people have been, or know someone who has been abused. I hate that it happened to Carly, but I love the woman she became. Another masterpiece of a novel!

10+++++ stars! Y'all, this story is AMAZING! Absolutely a favorite! A page-turner from the very first page, Carly's strength is awesome. The meet-cute w/ "Captain" James is hilarious. And there are MANY, MANY Laugh Out LOUD moments!

The friendship to romance is so well-written, the relationships nuanced and heartfelt. And there's no unnecessary relationship angst! These characters are in their 40's, and they act it. They are mature w/o being "mature" - and the struggles that ARE there feel REAL, and genuine.

The supporting characters (Jack & Lily, especially) are fleshed out & fantastic. Tess & Barrett bring more LOL moments, and I realized that I somehow haven't read book 1, so I will do that soon.

I could seriously gush about this book for pages, but I'll leave you w/ this - THIS BOOK IS WORTH A READ! : )

After reading Jennifer Van Wyk's debut, From the Ground Up, I couldn't wait to read more by her. This book has some of the same characters which I loved because I became rather attached to them!

Wow, what a start...the Prologue had my heart pounding and my palms sweating! Carly and James' first meeting was very entertaining and amusing, which was just what I needed after that beginning. And the hilarity doesn't stop there...I loved the realness of these scenes. Carly is broken, ruined for any future relationships, but lucky for her James is one very patient man, plus he's one amazing, wonderful, sexy, swoon worthy man, and now I want a James of my very own!

The words in this book are words to remember and live by, to come back to and share with others. This book needs to be read by everyone...prepare to become a huge Jennifer Van Wyk fan!

Carly and James are single parents who get a redo in the love department. A Better Place has moments of humor, moments of angst, it is very balanced.

A Better Place starts out exciting and kept my attention. I was just enthralled with watching James and Carly both evolve throughout the book. James was just perfect for Carly and vice versa. They evened each other out while helping one another heal.

Overall, A Better Place was a 4.5 star read. The writing was witty and catchy. The characters were well rounded and intriguing. The storyline is connected to another book- One I have not read. Now, I'm excited to read the book prior to this and the next one!

A Better Place is my first book my Jennifer Van Wyk and she's made me a forever fan! It's one of my favorites of the year! It's so refreshing to read a new author and just love their words. Her writing is fresh and witty and I was laughing out loud and smiling most of the time. These characters are well developed, intelligent, funny and have strong chemistry. James has been living his life, raising his daughter by himself. It's time for him to do something for himself now. He hasn't met a woman who interested him until he sets eyes on Carly. There's something different about her. The way they meet is EPIC! I was dying! Carly hasn't looked at a man with interest in a very long time. But she can't keep her eyes off the sexy, tattooed man who walked into the room. She's having inappropriate thoughts about him in her classroom and it's hilarious!
James has to know everything about her and he's going to use his niece to get his intel. Once James finally spends time with her, that's it. He's a goner. But Carly isn't going to make it easy on him, but that's ok. He's relentless. In a good way. Can James show Carly how to live again? Will Carly trust in James and his big heart? I loved watching this story unfold! James is swoonworthy with his sexiness and his sense of humor! I love the dork in him! Carly is one strong leading lady! Overall, I loved every second of it and couldn't wait to see what James was going to say next! I want more from James and Carly. You hear me, Jennifer? Novella. Something? :)

“Why?”
“Yeah. Why? I mean, I’m nothing…”
“You’re everything.”
“You don’t even know me.”
“And yet I already know that you’re everything.”
Swoon.

“Never be sorry for sitting on me, or lying on me, basically touching me in any way.”
“You’re kind of wonderful, you know that?” I tell him.
“Nah, it’s pretty simple when I’m with you.”

A Must Read!!
Wow, right from the start this book had me hooked. The opening was a bit intense but definitely got my attention. Carly Hanson and her son Jack needed a fresh start, and end up moving to Michigan. Things are going great until the day she meets one of her student's uncles, Uncle James. James is a kind and very handsome man, who is amazing with his niece and all her classmates. He is also instantly attracted to Ms. Carly Hanson the beautiful teacher. The immediate chemistry between the two is Undeniable. I was very curious as to where it all would lead, especially seeing how Carly did not want a relationship. I love the way they interact with each other, their playfulness, and banter. This book left my heart full of love and happiness. And If a book can make you laugh out loud, get mad, smile, and even cry once or twice that is a sign of an excellent book and that is exactly what this book did to me!! This book can be read as a standalone, but I definitely recommend reading From The Ground Up, if you haven't already, it just enhances this book that much more!

Just reread this book and I loved it just as much the first time. Carly had a rough marriage but enough was enough and she got her and her son out of it. Fast forward three years and they are living the lives they are meant to be. Insert "Captain" James. Everyone needs a James in their lives. The way that he loved was so amazing for not just Carly but for Jack as well. The love that he had for the two of them along with his daughter would conquer everything.
The secondary characters in this book were awesome!!! Can't wait to read everyone's story!!

-safe read
-middle aged couple both single parents.
-both have been celibate for a while
-not a lot of om-ow drama. Ex-wife comes into the picture for 1 chapter trying to start stuff but H, h and daughter shut that down quickly. Ex-husband also tries stuff but is shut down quickly as well.
-wished for more of an epilogue but it was still great!!

This isn't a book I would normally gravitate towards, that being said, I really did enjoy this one. I have been reading a lot of my normal darker stuff and this was a nice breath of the lighter side to break that up.

I swoon, I laughed, I cried, I felt it all in this book. The whole thing was a win in my book. The last 20 ish percent did drag more and kinda ruined the flow of the book but other than that it was all good. That is the only reason for my 4 stars on A Better Place. Carly and James were great together and their chemistry was felt from page one. I look forward to checking out more from Jennifer!

A Better Place by Jennifer Van Wyk

Hey bookish friends, I absolutely LOVED this story, this was EVERYTHING! Words can’t describe how much I really loved this book, it’s so good!
Without giving the whole story away, I’m going to write about how it made me feel and what I thought about the story.

When I started this story, I had a real like OMG moment (!!!) because I didn’t realize it was the brother from the first story from the ground up. I literally stopped, and fist-punched the air, I was super excited. From that moment on I knew 100% I was all in! if you haven’t read the first story you must go and one click it.

This story was filled with so much love, family, and so many smiles & laughter. So much SWOON! I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing and just melting into a pile of goo! James is my new book boyfriend, he was everything. (!!!) he is the perfect alpha male, with so much heart. He had everything going for him, sexy, romantic, adorable, funny. James is a single dad to Lily and who is pretty much a grown up now, I love that the characters in this series are ACTUAL ADULTS who are in their 40’s, who have lived and experienced life!

Carly didn’t even annoy me, I really felt her pain she was a trooper for the sh*t she had to deal with in her past. Carly is a single mum to Jack, and he is the coolest 16yr old. She is one strong Mumma bear, she had one of the best relations I have ever read with her son, they were beautiful to read about. I have so much respect for her character, I just loved watching evolve into someone fierce.

I adored the way James and Carly fell hard for each other, but they worked on a friendship and then it slowly progressed into a proper relationship. I just LOVED this story. I can’t fault it anywhere, the story line was perfect it flowed so well and not once did I stay from the story, I was all in.

A Better Place gave me all the feels bookish friends. I was crying, laughing, smiling, swooning it was just the most wonderful story. I really did fall head over heels for James, he was so respective on Carly and her wishes and how she needed to grow into her own and accept that she was HIS!

There are so many perfect moments, with these two and with each other’s families! Both Carly and James needed fresh starts, and they have both ended up moving to Michigan, this story left such an amazing impression on me and when I finished I wanted more, just adored this book so much that I cannot wait till I can get them in paperback.

Capitan James and Beautiful are a couple I hope everyone will read about, I don’t feel like you need to read the first book because they can really read as standalone's. I just think again the romance is written with perfectness, the story felt so real, I think because the characters were much older and that alone was something I really enjoyed.

Carly and James FOREVER!!

ARC Generously Provided by the Author

A Better Place is a beautiful story about two characters who are single parents and they have in common that their ex are TERRIBLE persons. James was left by his wife when his daughter was only 2 years old, so he was the only in charged of take care of his daughter Lilly and he did an amazing job, because Lilly is amazing woman in the present. Then we have Carly who has a teenager boy (Jake) and she always will do whatever is need to have him save.

Carly and James meet because she is the teacher of his niece, and the first moment they saw each other they feel a great connection, but of course Carly after her terrible relation with her husband she is not so sure she can trust to another man, or even love again, but James is another case, from the moment he saw Carly he knew that she was the perfect woman for him, but he can understand the insecures that Carly has, so that's why he accept to start as a friends and see what happen.

I LOVE James so much, he always was soo incredible understanding with Carly even he didn't know about her whole past, and he also is really good with Jake, giving him advice but at the same time making feel trust in him.

Carly and James have to pass for different situations, some more difficult than others, but they will always have the support of family and friends! and after these they understand that no matter if you have to wait so many years you can find the love of your life when you are n0t expecting it.

In this story we also can read about other secondary characters than you can love easily. I'm so excited to see what Jenn has planned for Andy and Christine!

I'm really surprise with Jennifer because this is her second book, but both are amazing!! She is making a run for my favorite authors list! Because I LOVEE her stories when you read the you can feel everything the characters are feeling and hte situations are things that everyone can have in real life.

Congrats Jennifer for this AMAZING story, I'm pretty sure will be a huge success and can't wait to read your next books!!

Let me start off by saying that this book deserves way more than 5 stars. It deserves about 20! I didn't have a lot of time earlier this week to read but I knew in my day off I was going to devour it. And devour it I did!!!

James, he's perfect. There is no other word for him. He's sexy, he's sweet, he's patient, kind, loving, protective, and a single dad? Do I have your attention? Because I'm pretty sure that grabbed me and hooked me from the beginning. And his daughter Lily? Let's just say she's definitely a direct impression of her father. They're two peas in a pod with the bond of a lifetime. They're relationship is everything.

Then Carly. She's strong, fierce, loving, learning to be happy, independent, and the perfect match for James. Their first encounter is perfect. Little Harper in the first grade classroom and it just goes from there. These two were meant for each other. They just gah! Oh and Jack, Jack is Carly's sixteen year old son. He's protective of his momma for reasons from the past. And he's everything too. This mother, son relationship is one of the best. It warms my heart. Actually this entire book does. Add in the rest of Jame's family and the friends in this town you have a group of people I'd love to be a part of!

This is my first read by Jennifer and it definitely won't be my last. I told her today that it didn't matter she had only wrote one other book so far. This book proves that I should have found her sooner. I savored every part of this book, probably taking more time to read it then usual but I didn't want it to end. When the words jump off the pages and sit in your heart? Why would I want to finish that?i just, this book had all the feels. I could feel what Carly, James, Jack, and Lily were feeling. The love, the happiness, the nervousness, but most important the feeling of family. These four may have been through hell before now, but guess what? They are by far in.... A Better Place!!! ❤️

I'm in the biggest book coma right now! Geez I had a feeling I was going to love me some James, but oh my word he just hit the top of the Book Boyfriend list. So you know that hubby or boyfriend that's just amazing in every way, and the woman who has him you kinda secretly hate her guts??? Ummm yeah that was me! Haha I mean who wouldn't love an amazing, patient, and loving man who not only makes you the center of his world but your son as well? I think that has to be one of the best parts of this book for me. Not only the fact he sweeps Carly off her feet but how this already amazing, single Dad takes on loving and nurturing Carly's teenage son Jack as well. Their bond was something extraordinary to watch. It pulled on every heart string I had. I'll admit at times while reading A Better Place my eyes were leaking. Some tough subjects and triggers were touched on and Carly's and Jack's past was difficult to learn and read about. Wyk delivered and wrote it all with such grace.

It's really hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that this author is just beginning her writing career. She by far has quickly become a top favorite. I'm beyond excited for the next character's books and praying (maybe begging a little) that we eventually get the children's stories as well. I have a feeling they have a lot to tell us. Once again Jennifer Van Wyk, Bravo!!!
