Hack clean. Run fast. Carry a loaded tranq gun.

Trained from birth as the perfect heir, Lila dodged her future. Now she keeps her family safe from hackers and intruders—and one another—as chief of its militia. One wrong step could plunge them from highborn society into slavery.

It’s a step that Lila takes more often these days. Partnering with those she shouldn’t. Investigating crimes in ways she shouldn't. Solving cases for the prime minister while keeping the highborn culprits a secret, all to help keep the masses from revolting. After a hacker breaks into a government server, he asks again.

But one of her disreputable allies needs help first.

If only she could refuse him.

Review: Disreputable Allies (Fates of the Bound #1) by Wren Weston

Reviewed by Heather Ragland

Lila finds herself in a sticky situation after she infiltrates the Bullstow compound. A few members of law enforcement have caught her and have slammed her against a wall of the complex. A routine police procedure and Lila’s attire ensure she will soon be behind bars. Her situation is even more perilous because she will certainly be hanged if the information on her person is found. Suddenly, a loud blast rocks the ground allowing Lila to escape the rough treatment of her captors. She limps away from the scene as AAS leaflets flap and curl in the wind. Lila realizes she is not out of danger- the fliers are a sign of betrayal! She sets out on a mission to deal with the perpetrator of the treachery, and the topic of her “criminal behavior” deftly guides readers into Lila’s world.

Disreputable Allies is filled with detailed information about the history and customs of the cutthroat society Lila inhabits. Weston combines the high society eighteenth-century customs of London, with current societal practices to create a unique story. It is clear Weston did a lot of work to create this romantic suspense novel. For the most part, Disreputable Allies is easy to read as detailed information about history and backgrounds of the main characters are revealed.

The dialogue makes the characters situations and interaction believable. Several scenes contain intense arguments due to the characters differing viewpoints. This tension consistently occurs throughout the story. Differing viewpoints about societal customs and expectations mostly occur between Lila and her love interest Tristan. There is also a lot of tension between Lila and her employers. The quality of the relationships Lila has, when she interacts with other characters, comes across clearly as she has intense conversations with them.

This story has a slew of diverse characters which heavily influence the way in which they behave. Their traits are crafted to encourage readers to draw certain conclusions about motives, personal beliefs, and preferences of the characters. Each character has their own unique style of dress, personality and some even have certain food preferences.

Lila’s uses technology and weapons to get herself out of many sticky situations. Information about how the technology and weapons are used, show some of the values and practices of the society. Tristan’s treatment of one of the devices, Lila depends on, is the source of some of the searing conflict between the two.

Disreputable Allies has a few violent scenes and profanity. After certain vicious incidents occur, it will be obvious to readers that the scenes are important to the storyline. The vile language is limited and is used to emphasize the intense situations the characters face.

A few issues may arise for some readers when they read this novel. In certain parts of the book, there is a large amount of information revealed through the third person point of view. This information, mostly written about the history of the society, interrupts the flow of the narrative. The author also leaves out certain information about some of the characters’ pasts.

It is apparent Weston omits some facts from the plot to give readers a good reason to look forward what happens in the next book of the series, Stolen Lies. The messages contained in Disreputable Allies about perceptions, friendships and the definition of criminal behavior may also give readers reason to want to learn more about the saga.

If you are fond of books with action-packed suspense, and relationship drama, then this is the book for you.

I give Disreputable Allies by Wren Weston 3 out of 5 stars.

I was given a free copy of the eBook in exchange for an honest review.

It's not like I can change anything or hope for change since 4 books have already been written. But I can give my opinion on the three stars which most definitely could have been four for me, had the writing style not irritated me. Is there a such thing as too much would building? Characters in the book I get because you want to know them better. Same with the world they live in. I get that also. But when a leaf, a scarf, a light bulb, bird and dog crap, a step in one direction is described for two pages...all throughout the book... issa no for me. I just feel it took away from the point of the story. Which was good by the way.
Also, with the next three chapters for the next book at the end of this one; to recap the previous book's story is also an irritant. Fans of the series and newcomers start at book 1, not book 2 or 3. To replay it in book two makes me not want to continue because I know I'll skip pages, possibly missing something important to the next adventure.

Interesting world

The women run the businesses and the men run government. The people are split by classes and ruling families. A little feudal with computers and great motorbikes and guns that use tranquilizer darts.

The business power runs through female heirs and government has the training and control of male children. Everything rests on the success of the family.

I enjoyed the story and will read the rest of the series!
