Now revised and expanded - the companion workbook to former submarine captain David Marquet's acclaimed leadership book, Turn The Ship Around!

In Turn the Ship Around! former U.S. Navy Captain David Marquet introduced a bold new approach to leadership, based on his experiences turning around the troubled submarine USS Santa Fe . He gave up the traditional command-and-control model and instead inspired every member of his crew to embrace accountabliity. Santa Fe rapidly improved its dismal performance record and started winning awards as the best ship in its class.

In this workbook -- now a revised and expanded second edition, with a new title -- Marquet helps readers apply his methods to their own organizations. Featuring extensive questions and exercises on how to delegate and inspire, this workbook will help readers build a work community based on personal responsibility and trust. As Marquet

Imagine a workplace where everone engages and contributes their full intellectual capacity, a place where people are happier and healthier because they have more control over their work -- a place where everyone is a leader.... All of this is possible, but not with the current leadership paradigm.

I was recommended this book by a junior person I had been mentoring. I checked in the Navy’s MWR library and saw that it was available, so I immediately borrowed it. I must say, I was very impressed. It was written by a former Submarine Skipper who learned from both the positive and negative experiences earlier in his career and knew what to do and implement upon taking command of the Submarine Santa Fe. What caught my eye was how the author, at the beginning of the book, dismantled the “empowerment” model. We hear that term a lot, especially those of us in the military or other leadership positions. The problem with empowerment is that it is still a form of power and is predicated on the leader-follower model, an antiquated form of leadership. The author moves away from that model to the leader-leader model. Now I realize that is easier said than done, but practical examples are provided in the text to get there, and almost all of them made sense to me.

The concept that stood out most is allowing your people to say, “I intend to…” this gives your subordinates control and helps build confidence vice stating, “I request permission to.” I have learned this example countless times in my career and can attest that it works and builds better and more trustworthy and effective relationships in the workplace. The other important takeaway is learning to resist providing solutions and instead utilizing curiosity to encourage free-thinking, creativity, and ownership. While this can result in your people/teams making mistakes, it creates a more inclusive climate, adds value to the individual, and allows room for learning and building confidence by establishing trust between peers, supervisors, and senior leaders.

My only nag with the book is that people in command of ships or independent units certainly have more leverage and freedom in applying these principles than those attached to large teams with many departments and significant layers of oversight. Still, even in those circumstances, fruitful concepts can be extracted from this book to improve and impact the work environment in those situations. I also learned that junior members and cadets could be mentors and offer solid advice as well! Very grateful for the recommendation.

After I read Turn the Ship Around! by L. David Marquet, I told my boss about it and suggested that we read it as a team. He loved the idea and asked me to lead it. In my preparations to do that, I came across a workbook that was published to go along with the book. It's called The Turn the Ship Around! Workbook . I bought it to help me prepare for our meetings. I recently finished. I don't recommend it.

It covers the same material as the book it is based on, even following the same chapter format. It includes some additional content which is valuable, but the book is largely repetitive. The questions at the end of each chapter in the workbook are the same as in the book.

While I did bookmark a few of the exercises as valuable, they weren't enough to justify the cost of the workbook. I would recommend simply sticking with the source book itself. It has plenty of powerhouse ideas to discuss and implement.

This is probably a good workbook for people entirely new to the concepts of servant-leadership and/or on a learning journey based on David Marquet's book.

We were going through the workbook as an experiment in the book club. I stopped reading / working in it somewhere around page 70 because of other priorities and because I didn't get a lot of value from the questions.

What I do believe is very valuable are the parts where more context is given like the Chief's perspective.

Excellent leadership inspiration, promoting collaboration and team development. Not sure how easy it would be to implement unless whole company chose to move to intent lead leadership rather than traditional command and control method.

Really great companion to "Turn the Ship Around" with lots of exercises, things to reflect on, and areas to reflect and write down thoughts on the questions. A practical, actionable approach to taking the first book into your workplace.

First, I'd like to note that all I have is this workbook. I don't even have access to the original book Turn This Ship Around. Despite of this, I've found this book pretty useful.

Every section has a few words, then a bunch of thought provoking exercises. While I'd love to say that I worked through every part of the book, I have not. I've got enough on my plate at this exact moment, so I just scanned through most of it before I grab a pen and notepad and take it seriously.

What I can say from this superficial view is that it looks like this book is going to be more than useful. It looks like it could very easily help managers, business owners, employees, and everyone else that wants to get away from traditional top-down leadership in their world. The exercises are ones that don't just take a brief view, but make you sit back and really think about what you are doing now, what you want to do, and how you are going to get yourself and those around you there.

i want to thank goodreads first reads and the author for this free copy of Turn your ship around.this is a companion workbook to his book of the same name.
i found this workbook to be a great tool for organizations to improve how we all can work together and take responsibility in our own positions.it does say that there are two companion tools in which one is a movie and the other are flash cards.not to mention his book.the movie "master and commander"should be as interesting as this book.
i intend on reading his book to accompany this workbook and also watch the movie.i enjoyed answering the questions and activities.
I recommend this this book to those who are interested in changing their way of thinking in any job or organization and to read first the book.

This is kind of a tough review for me as I'm not in a position to implement this workbook and discuss the results. I am a business owner, but my responsibilities are such that we put people in a position to own their own businesses, so there isn't a boss/employee relationship. I did, however, read through it and consider previous positions I've held in management and, based on that, would say this is a great resource for anyone who wants to move their organization forward by building leaders.

I received a copy of this book for free through Goodreads First Reads.

A good supplement to the book but probably even better in a classroom setting. Worth keeping around for some refresher exercises.
