The battle between good and evil is about to get extremely personal. Reverend Alvin Flatt has something that New Orleans' most notorious mobster wants--and he's not about to give it up without the fight of his life. In the good pastor's mind there is no room for compromise or negotiation: He knows what God has told him, and with private investigators Dani Ross and Ben Savage helping him, he's sure God's plan will prevail. The mob boss, though, is used to getting his way. And he's used to doing whatever it takes to get it. Dani and Ben are prepared for his schemes, but it soon becomes dangerously clear to them that the battle against evil never ends--and that only a miracle can save them from a tragic fate.
Gilbert Morris was one of today's best-known Christian novelists. He lived in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Johnnie. He is the father to Lynn Morris and Alan Morris
A weird quote from the book: “They passed the point in their friendship where they had to express their thanks out loud.” It’s always kind to say “thank you”, no matter how close two people are..?!?
I enjoyed the characters in this installment of the Dani Ross Mystery series. Reverend Flatt was a fun and interesting character. The plot action revolved more around suspense than a mystery, but it was interesting. Morris wrapped up the storyline well. This is an enjoyable Christian mystery series.
Four of a Kind is a Dani Ross mystery where a crime boss is acquiring a lot of property regardless of who gets hurt. A Reverend friend of Dani's is caught in the middle when his church property could be lost to the crooks. The Dani Ross mysteries are Christian mysteries and very clean, but not what I would classify as cozy. Dani and her assistant Ben Savage have to face some pretty serious criminals, but Dani's faith in God gives her strength and sees her through each tough circumstance.
Mob boss Lenny Valentine is buying up property any way he can in New Orleans. Rev. Alvin Flatt will not sell his church to him. Valentine and goons harass and threaten him, finally injuring him. Dani Ross steps in to help, both with Valentine and the church. Along the way, she trusts in God's plan, relying on Him to allow goodness to prevail. Through multiple circumstances, she is obedient to God and bears witness, bringing others to Christ.

This is basically one long spoiler. So if you don’t want the whole story, except for the main mystery, spoiled, you won’t want to read this. The mystery was good. It kind of cracks me up that there is always a bring everyone together and wrap up the mystery moment, but it fits these books. The new characters were interesting and easy to keep straight. I appreciate that there is a witnessing element in this story as well. So there are 3 or 4 main reasons this story was hard for me to read and not my favorite. First of all Ben Savage is hardly in this story compared to the first three books, and he’s my favorite character. Second, I don’t do sad stories well, so the fact that Dani’s horse dies and some of that wasn’t my favorite. Third I don’t like when a storyline isn’t going the way I want it to go. Admittedly, it almost always makes the story more realistic, and most of what bothers me in this story that is true of, but I still hate it. Dani is ridiculous when it comes to Ben. She freaks out at him like she does no one else, yet can’t seem to figure out she cares for him. And good grief does she have trust issues with him, despite him proving himself. It kind of drives me batty. And although I like Sixkiller’s character. His and Dani’s relationship annoys me to no end. The fourth thing that annoys me, and it’s connected to the above reason, is that Dani is so broken in this book. Ben tried to help her and she mostly accepts the help, but then she’s still a jerk to him 🙄 It’s like she’s afraid to care about him maybe.

Ben lands in the hospital after taking some vacation and or quitting (nothing is ever black and white) Dani finds out he'd gone to try to help his sister Ruth who had been getting a shake down by a lone protection racketeer. Dani, Luke (local cop) hit the road joining the Rodeo circuit for a while trying to track down and take on the ones who both hurt Ben and are causing trouble. When the bodies start stacking up - including Dani's horse, she's faced with the choice to keep going or to go home.
