"Murder or the attempt thereof often occurs while others sleep." And thus begins a story where danger insinuates itself into the course of ordinary lives. Rod Cavanaugh was in fact a regular guy. Suited for his job as a criminal lawyer, he adores his girls and loves his scotch. When the bottom fell out of his marriage and his family splintered he thought he had enough to deal with - mistakes of his doing that needed to be corrected - but that was before he became the target of a client, in a deadly game that put what was left at risk. Who he thought he was, his place in the scheme of things, will be challenged by a killer who stalks and bides his time. Only Cavanaugh can stop the carnage, uncover the evil. But the price to pay may be innocence itself.

The story deals with lawyer who takes up a case because he cannot refuse it. The story has multiple layers which deals with why Rob has to take the case and the repercussions of the same. It also deals with another seemingly unrelated case which is eventually added to the main story.
The way the characters are etched and the multi layered plot kept me hooked till the very end. Enjoyed it.

DNF. Words. Lots of words. There may be a story in there, but the author's love of words was getting in the way.
I have too many books to read.

I received this book free from Goodreads in exchange for an honest review.

Received this in exchange for an honest review. Thank you Goodreads.

Yes, a fast legal thriller, lots of twists and turns and hard to put down. Well written and good development. I will read another by this author.

The down side is this: grammatical errors (several), some scenes not believable, guns in a state court room. So for a fast read, OK if you read over the errors, and OK if you are not familiar with legal procedure. Did I mention the big shoot out, and bodies stacking up. I always hate that in any book.

I now see this is Book 1, so lets see what happens next.

SLUGGER has a plot that can best be described as masterful. When I read a novel, the plot is the factor that I give the most weight, determining how much I enjoy the novel. The plot of SLUGGER is complicated, complex, multi layered and requires that you pay attention to all the unfolding, moving parts. Paying attention was no problem for me. I couldn't tear myself away from the story of legal antics, organized crime elements and ruthless clever murders.

Rob is the Oregon defense attorney caught up in the swirl of activity after being maneuvered into representing a felon in possession of a weapon, by a judge he doesn't want to make an enemy of. Already dealing with an upcoming trial representing a client accused of pedophilia, a bulimic daughter and his own divorce negotiations he is reluctant to take the case, but can't refuse the Judge, whose son works with the man, currently in need of a defense attorney. He has been chosen by the Judge because he is one of the best, sporting a nearly unblemished record of wins in a system where the defense only triumphs in 5% of the cases.

Think there's a lot of balls in air? Thats not half of it. There is also a reporter asking questions about a book Amazon has just released, written by his legal secretary. It is a work of fiction, she claims, but contains barely concealed references to judges, clients and colorful characters, that Rob has to deal with daily. She has compiled the book with plagiarized unflattering rants that Rob made in his personal journal, while drinking heavily and processing his impending divorce. Lawsuits have been threatened.

Slugger is a fascinating book that never gets boring or flags and the author does a good job getting the story out. I do have one complaint, and it is one that may put off some readers: There are so many characters in the book that it is hard to keep track of them all and it is confusing. I had to look back a couple chapters to figure out who somebody was, and it was a bit confusing. There is one thing that could help ease some of the confusion: the book could be edited so that characters are either referred to by their first or last names instead of alternating between them, depending on the reference. Using both first and last names doubles the number of characters the reafer has to keep track of.

None of th confusion is enough to detract from the 5 star rating SLUGGER deserves for the unique, fascinating and compelling plot devised by the author, T.B. O'Neill . He is clearly a very smart man with an excellent imagination. Read this one and enjoy the ride.

Slugger is a legal thriller you won't want to miss!

*Disclaimer: I received this book for free via Goodreads Giveaway*

DNF - I tried, I really did. I gave it my best, but struggled to enjoy this book. Reading should be fun, not a chore. The author is wordy - unnecessarily so at times - and the plot moves SLOWLY. The author also uses obscure words at times, that could have easily been replaced with a more common word. There are also numerous grammatical errors as other readers have mentioned.

I also strongly disliked the author's portrayal of women. Many of his female characters are described as conniving, vindictive or mentally unstable, meek and submissive, or something sexy to look at ("...her backside floating in the air and bosom about to explode out of the front of her scooped necked blouse").

All in all, I will NOT be reading other books in this series, and most likely will not read any other books by this author.

Rod Cavanaugh, Defense Attorney , who has not lost a case in years, is asked by a judge to defend the judges son's friend on a felon in possession of a firearm.
Easy enough, until Rod finds out that a murder charge will soon be following.
Then, he finds out his secretary has self published a book, with his OK, but without his knowledge that she was using his private journal for material,. and the book pretty clear describes the judge, the DA and other lawyers in town. Then more people are killed and the lawyer is beaten badly.
Now, he's mad.

Really!

A gripping tale of greed, fear and money and the people who fought to bring it down. A thrill to read and see how a small time lawyer took down a crooked corporation and how he risked his life, his daughters lives and his associates lives. I received this book from Goodreads for free.

Great Book

Author did a great job. He had be at every turn of the page. If you like legal novels this is a must read. He does not use terms which require a law degree to appreciate without e planing the purpose and plan. Great character development with suspense in every chapter. Read it

Ok, just like several other readers, I also tried to get through this book. After struggling for a week, with all the legalities inserted in this book, I finally gave up. Maybe someone who is in this profession can appreciate this book. I could not.

I received this book free from Goodreads for a honest opinion.

Fast moving thrill ride

Enjoyable fast moving legal thriller with just the right balance of action in and out of the courtroom. The main character had enough flaws and life problems to make him relatable.

The storyline held my interest, with enough ‘surprises’ to keep me reading until the end. However, the numerous grammatical and/or editing errors were distracting.

Not to be missed!

An excellent and fast paced book. The writing is such that it draws one in from the very beginning and saddens the reader when it is finished!
