This was really lovely! The illustrations were absolutely gorgeous, and I loved reading about all these awesome goddesses and when to call upon them. I just wish we got more information about each goddess than the two paragraphs provided.

mini review of “Bad Girls Throughout History: 100 Remarkable Women Who Changed the World” and “Legendary Ladies: 50 Goddesses to Empower and Inspire You” by Ann Shen.
.
Great, beautifully illustrated books celebrating some of the incredible women & goddesses. Definitely not an exhaustive list, but each book contains gorgeous illustrations & illuminating essays that’ll make a great gift. I don’t know if these books are for kids or adults, but I think it’s more geared towards adults because some of the essays contain adult content. I think it’s a great way to learn or re-learn some of the inspirational women we might’ve not known or forgotten about. I like the “Legendary Ladies” more because it features goddesses from all over the world, and I like mythology. Adults need picture books, too! As I get older, I don’t read much about mythology as I used to when I was in school, so it’s very refreshing. I want to know, do you have a favorite goddess? 🤓✌️📖

This was was a really fun little book and I actually learned about some goddesses I hadn't heard of before. The book is separated into different sections based on each goddess' domain / principle area of help, and each goddess gets a few paragraphs telling some basic information about her, an illustration, a little totem or symbol that has something to do with her power, and a suggestion of when you can call on that goddess for help.

I thought this was really cool and it reminded me a lot of The Little Book of Feminist Saints, which made every woman the 'matron saint' of something and gave them all a particular feast day. The only real complaint I have here is that, while there were a wide variety of goddesses from many different religions, I still felt like Greek and Roman goddesses were a bit over-represented [and my favorite, Persephone, wasn't included lol].

Here's an example of one of the goddesses featured:

There are SO many things to love about this book. The best thing about it is the beautiful illustrations of the legendary ladies, all drawn in a gorgeous watercolour style that I just adore. I also love the complete variation in the ladies that Shen has chosen to feature - from Greek to Welsh, there are 50 incredible pages and I love them all!

For people into empowerment and motivation, there are so many books out there - but this one is unique. I've never seen a book that focuses on legends and myths to bring inspiration, and Legendary Ladies does it so well. Each page describes who the legendary lady is, and then gives a quick reason why each lady empowers you to do something amazing. Whether you need a push to step out of your comfort zone, do something brand new, or start something major that will change your life, there's inspiration in here for everyone!

This collection of short biographies and introductions to fifty goddesses from cultures across the world has a lot to offer, but it can also be a mixed bag at times.

It's mostly a really solid and fun read, written in a style that will most appeal to upper-middle grade and lower young adult readers, but it definitely has a broad appeal. While there are many goddesses that one might expect from a book like this (Greek, Egyptian, Norse, etc), there are goddesses from a broad variety of cultures from around the world. Each page of information includes the tradition the goddess stems from, what areas of physical and spiritual life she reigns over, and at least one of the stories associated with her. Every goddess is also accompanied by a pretty great image--the art is on point for every page and was always enjoyable.

I didn't really enjoy the "call on [insert goddess] for [insert purpose]" that was included with every entry. At first I thought maybe it's because it's a bit hokey, but I also know it would have appealed to me a lot when I was the appropriate age. I think my number one issue with that aspect was actually that it encourages readers to "call on" goddesses from traditions that are not their own, something that could definitely be disrespectful. That aspect could have even be improved with a "think of this goddess when" instead of advising readers to call upon. We can all learn from stories, but we don't really need white kids calling on Aztec and Chinese goddesses.

While most of the information seemed really solid (and fun to read), there were two things that gave me pause. One was a statement that was incorrect, informing readers it was "during the Tang Dynasty over two thousand years ago" even though the Tang Dynasty started less than fifteen hundred years ago--so it could be one or the other but not both. I also took issue with the ways Indigenous groups were represented. Aztec and Maya were listed as such, but Indigenous groups in the US were listed only as "Native American." While it did refer to the specific groups by name within the body of the text, they were the only groups included where you had to look further than the "origin" line to find out which group they were from.

Overall, it was a largely enjoyable read with gorgeous illustrations, but there was enough that frustrated me to dampen my enjoyment. I wouldn't NOT recommend it, but I wouldn't recommend it either, and I would advise some caution to those interested in it. That said, I am still interested in reading the author's other book.

I absolutely adored everything about this. I also own shen’s other book on bad girls throughout history which I thoroughly enjoyed as well but this one was sheer perfection. the art took my breath away and I loved hearing about goddesses from various cultures.

shen also includes ways to call on every goddess depending on your situation which I appreciated so much especially as I’m coming to terms with my spirituality. such a lovely touch.

if you’re at all interested in mythology this is such a stunning book to add to your collection you would not be disappointed

Mythology is a funny thing. When you really think about it, mythology is, at its root - with all due respect to that which is sacred and religious - stories that we have told ourselves about our own origins.

This is a nice compilation of legendary goddesses for anyone who likes to read about mythology. I'm glad I was able to learn about the ones I've never heard of. The stories are fascinating and inspiring.

This was very, very short and the little 'call on so-and-so when you need...' felt very New Agey at the end of every segment. I didn't know that was going to be a part of it.
I liked her selection of goddesses, though it did feel a tad heavy on the Greeks but that may have been my own familiarity with them causing them to stick out.

Continuing to read more books on badass women in history, I knew I had to pick up this book on Goddesses. Covering goddesses from all over the world, Ann tells us where they’re from, their origin story, and what they stand for. Plus, we get some beautiful artwork depicting each goddess at the end of their story.

One of the things that I love about this book is that it covers goddesses from all over the world rather than just Roman and Greek goddesses. Don’t get me wrong. I love Roman and Greek goddesses as well, but we often get a sample of Greek and Roman mythology rather than expanding and covering other cultures. Based on the cover and the synopsis, I knew we were going to finally get a good variety when I picked up this book.

I also love that this the perfect book to introduce kids to mythology. It’s kid friendly, has beautiful artwork, and will inspire kids to look more into mythology during and after reading. Of all the chapters, there is one chapter that is not kid friendly, so I recommend screening the book beforehand since there isn’t a trigger warning at the beginning of that particular chapter.

The only thing that I didn’t like is that it’s encouraged to call on each goddess for a particular reason (fertility, inspiration, etc) at the end of each chapter. It’s not something that I would recommend because you shouldn’t call on a deity you don’t worship for help. Otherwise, it’s a great book and I highly recommend picking it up and adding it to your book collection.

The title pretty much describes the book. I enjoyed the wide range of cultures and aspects of the divine feminine that Shen draws on. I also appreciated that Shen was informative, engaging, and factual in her descriptions of the goddesses, especially that she did not try to water down the stories. For example, she includes Xochiquetzal's story leading to the first menstruation, and refrains from erroneously trying to make Sekhmet a motherly figure (which Sekhmet decidedly is not).

The illustrations were lovely and captured the spirit of the goddess and the culture she is from.

I got this book from the library but might now buy my own copy, especially since the library, as libraries do, wants their copy back.

A really lovely collection of goddesses from different cultures around the world. I loved the illustrations and brief descriptions for each. I also appreciated that there was a bibliography, in case I wanted to read more about some of them.

All in all, I enjoyed this book enough that I’m probably going to buy a copy because pretty pictures plus goddesses is totally my weakness. I also appreciated that many of them included suggestions for what situations to invoke a certain goddess in, and symbols/plants sacred to them that you could use when doing so.

the author sat there and classified Central and South American native American tribe goddesses but failed to identify each separate tried for North America just label them native American. so if you're going to provide a goddess book maybe do your research first because you just insulted the native American tribes in North America by not distinguishing their cultures by just labeling them native American.

I absolutely adore this book! It’s just so great that something like this even exists. There are so many goddesses that I didn’t know about before reading Legendary Ladies, and I’m so glad that I finally know about them. I think that this book did great in featuring goddesses from a great range of cultures, which is fantastic! And each goddess’s section was informative and also concise. Each goddess had one page featuring an illustration of her, and another page containing all of the important information about her.

I really like Ann Shen’s art, and the fact that each goddess was equally represented by having the same amount of space (one page) and colour. And did I mention the colour?! This book is so colourful, it just made me smile from ear to ear as I flipped through it. Again, I’m very happy to see a good amount of representation in Legendary Ladies, and that multiple goddesses of colour were featured! I always like to learn about new cultures, and this book definitely taught me a lot about goddesses from a great variety of lands and peoples. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and will definitely be returning to it again and again. I will also be checking out Ann Shen’s other books, and will also be keeping an eye out to see what she will share with us next!

This book was extraordinary! It described goddesses from every culture and religion. The book was divided into several sections, based on what goddess was most well known for that particular characteristic, some examples were Love and Power.

Each goddess had a two page spread. On one page was an artistic representation of that goddess, on the other a biography, details of their powers, and at what point in your life you should call on them for assistance.

I will say, this book is intended for younger readers, however, a warning should be issued to parents and caregivers. Several of the pictures are revealing, though not explicit. Also, the bios do not shy away from describing when the goddess underwent abuse or other cruel treatment in their lives. Again, nothing explicit, but it is presented in such a way.

The book is very frank, detailed and informative. The art is amazing! A wonderful book for any mythology fan.

I have always been attracted to myths and stories of Gods/Demons/Nymphs and all that which has legends and folklore surrounding it. So this book in a way was a quick absorbing read and made all the more interesting since it's all about the female Goddesses and the aura and story surrounding them. Some were known and many were new and the illustrations that were given after each was very imaginative. The underlying theme what I felt was that there is no masculine without the feminine and thus these women embody all the qualities that are there in us varying degrees and which makes all unique from each other.

The real seller for this book is the beautiful art. I would love to check out Ann's other titles.

I enjoyed learning a little bit about goddesses I didn't know about it and it makes me want to know more.

I think this colorful art and format might make someone think this book could be a good book for kids but I would warn you that some of the things that happen to goddesses in mythology are not appropriate for children.

A lovely little introduction to goddesses with some truly gorgeous artwork! Even though I did know a lot of them already, I appreciated that this went beyond some of the more frequently used mythologies (i.e. not just Greek and Norse). I would have loved some more text as it was largely just two or three paragraphs, but on the whole a lovely book.
