Walk invites you to explore the benefits that the simple act of walking and spending time in the outdoors can bring to our sense of wellbeing and meaning. Simple, free and one of the easiest ways to get more active, lose weight, and become healthier; walking is a great natural way to boost your mind, body, and soul. Traveling by foot is meditative as it fosters a slowness of thought as you become more aware of your surroundings. Learn how to change your speed, embrace the silence, and unearth the joy of walking without going anywhere through the chapters of this book.
Drawing on Sholto's extensive experience working with mindfulness-based practices, this book offers guidance and practical exercises for cultivating present moment awareness and bringing curiosity to the nature of our experience and the world around us. Walk aims to inspire you to move beyond the pages, step outside, and awaken your senses as you make walking part of your life.
I really enjoyed this book. It had some helpful tips to bring more mindfulness into simple activities. I’ve regained my enjoyment of walking recently and am inspired to try some of the ideas here - particularly ones surrounding going somewhere without a purpose/goal or time limit.
For a little book on walking and mindfulness, Walk is a worthy effort that starts out discussing the importance of walking and then shifts focus to breathing and the importance of mindfulness. With reminders for getting the most out of walking, and short, directed exercises for increasing awareness of mindfulness, this small book is a mostly fun experience. My only criticism is that some parts of the mindfulness drag on a little, and I would have liked more of a focus on walking. I love the multi-colored pages and the simple illustrations. I also appreciated that nearly every page was self-contained and rarely carried on to the next page, making it easier to read in spurts. After having read this book, I have incorporated some of its wisdom into my own walking.
Reading this book has pointed out to me a number of things that I already do subconsciously when walking, which are some of the reasons that I enjoy walking so much... it has also pointed out to me that a lot of people don't get this enjoyment from walking and don't take in the world around them... and that is why I hate going for walks with them even though they are my friends! It lays out some simple, common sense ideas in a straightforward and structured way that should make it accessible to anyone willing to read it, ideas that when put into practice I can confirm will make people's walks much more enjoyable!
I should have looked at this book more closely before buying it, as it was not at all what I expected. I had hoped for more focus on things to do on walks, but that wasn't addressed until the second half of the book and did not offer anything new to me. But, if you're very much into mindfulness or really want to learn, you may have a better experience with this book.
Also, I found the font used through portions of the book rather hard on the eyes, as well as the many pages of white text on a colored background.
bad. this feels like a book that was written by someone that looked at walks and said "you know what? this could be an art". boring, it is hard to read due to the light font on bright coloured pages that it used so such a waste. I have dislexya and I just couldn't read 50% of the book without straining my eyes. not worth it. and it says so basic and common sense things, like drinking water. come on. and then these quotes that are supposed to be dramatic and make a person go "wow this is so philosophical"
I picked up this book on a whim while buying a new pair of hiking shoes. For the price I paid, it's certainly not a bad read, but at times I disliked that the same few points are rehashed over and over again. That's not to say it's not worth reading, though. Most of the exercises and practical tips are readily applicable to one's daily life, given enough effort.
I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in mindfulness, but who wants an introduction rather than a full course.
An interesting book on mindfulness and walking. Not every exercise involves walking, and not all of the book is about walking but hopefully this book might encourage you to get out and walk a bit more.
Not at all what I expected. Didn’t get anything from this book. I’m loving going for walks at the moment and really just found this book a waste of time. Do not see the point in this book!
Sweet little book! The reader needs to be able to slow down and chill to be able to find value in Radford’s contemplative approach. I found the tiny font size and bright colored pages made it difficult to read. But reading just a few pages at a time, (from January to June) I found it worthwhile and enjoyable,
Much of this book was lost to me because of the high number of pages written in white print on pale coloured background. It might look pretty, but to me, it's illegible.
