Meh. I bought this one without having read it first, my bad, I know, because of reviews and the fact that it’s pretty and shiny (don’t judge!) The illustrations were everything I love, and they brought me to a solid 2, instead of a rocky one. The actual writing part of the book, though, didn’t do anything for me, and I might’ve just flipped through to enjoy the pictures without reading, if it hadn’t been so short. The advice just didn’t particularly resonate with me.
this is a real book and i actually read it. i don’t believe that the unicorns said ‘no’ when noah asked them to go on the ark, or that adam named them at creation. but i do agree with this quote - ‘write letters instead of snap chatting.’ insightful. innovative. i’m filled with sparkles & glitter now apparently
As a child I became familiar with unicorns because my mom collected them. It was the 80’s and unicorns were all the rage! The Last Unicorn was one of my favorite movies, I collected Lisa Frank items with unicorns, and dreamt about finding one. As an adult, teaching preschool, I rediscovered the unicorn from the Serendipity book Morgan and Me. I forgot how much I adored unicorns and began collecting them again.
This book is for all us adults who loved unicorns and are ready to rediscover them. A fun and quick read, it looks at the different aspects of the unicorn including magical, enigmatic, and grace. I highly recommend this book for anyone who spent part of their childhood looking for unicorns and still know they are out there.
This book was just one big contradiction. In one chapter, it said do this and this, then the next chapter said you should do the opposite. And some of the things it said were just silly. On top of that, it never actually told you to be happy with who you were. All the way, it kept telling you how to change one way or another. It was just bad.
There were a few good sayings in here, and the ''art'' was funny and nice, but that's the only good thing it's got going for it. Toward the end, I actually felt that this book was an elaborate way fo saying a woman isn't good unless she is feminine and nice. Yeah, it's taking things a little far, but that's what I was left with.
A very pretty cover and very pretty illustrations, plus unicorn lore and practical advice on how to bring more magic into your everyday life. Fun, gentle, and overall lovely.
Though there was lots to like about this book, it had too much misogyny for my liking. "Smile more" "Always smile" Telling us how to sit and "Be charming to everyone you meet" seriously?! I am sure that as a grown woman Gray has met some creeps, so this was actually astounding to me. Other "tips" included never swearing, having your make up done, not get drunk, dress elegantly and not to flaunt what you have. The list goes on and so does the toxic positivity and contradictory words. Any part of the book that tells it's reader to be themselves or to dress how they want, I loved. There are a few quotes I liked and I loved the parts about being playful and fierce Unfortunately it is not a re- read and as much as I want to keep it for the esthetic this book ended on a down note for me.
Be More Unicorn is both a self help book and a short history of unicorns. It has exercises to help you bring out the best qualities of yourself (based on those found in unicorns) and also quotes historical and recent texts. I'm pretty sure most of the biblical references were made up (unicorns were the first animals Adam named in the Garden of Eden, unicorns were invited onto Noah's Ark but were too busy having fun in the water and thus changed into narwhals, etc.), but the descriptions of unicorns as creatures other than horses woth horns IS accurate based on my prior readings. So. I'm only giving this 2.5 stars, but it's a cute read for women (like me) who love unicorns.
I have to admit, I've never exactly been a believer in unicorns and all that magic stuff, but I was intrigued by this book enough to pick it up a while ago and today I sat in the garden to read it. I've often struggled with low self esteem and confidence issues and there were parts of this book that offered simple and little suggestions for ways I can try build both - they for me were the highlight of this book, which I will go going through with a highlighter to mark out my favourite/most appropriate bits.
This book was a lot different than I expected. There are some really, really cute quotes along with some fun little prompts, but also history on the unicorn dating back to the 3rd century. While I wish this book would have had more quotes and fun little lists, it’s definitely cute for someone who loves unicorns.
*One thing I did like about this book was that you could stop at any point in time and pick it up without having to worry you forgot all you read.
I love a good unicorn book (I’m 51 as of this writing). I’ve always loved unicorns. I used to collect unicorn stickers for my sticker collection. I’ll always love unicorns. If I could walk amongst them, I would.
This is a great motivational, happy little book. There are a lot of great quotes and advice throughout, and I read it in one day. If you’re ever feeling sad or bogged down by life, give it a read.
And may your day be filled with magical glitter. :)
Very cute, positive book. Some good quotes and interesting mythical history. Activities sound fun so will try them. I find some advice contradicts other advice, but as a quick read it's sweet and uplifting
It's just kinda silly. Some of the pages were pretty and had good quotes. I sort of want to cut out a couple of the pages to frame or include in notes.
Such a cute book! Wonderful for any unicorn lover. I especially like the descriptive words for these fantastical animals that apply to fierce, confident women, too.
While there were some cute nuggets in this book, there was a flippant joke about white privilege as well as typos that together just ruined the suspension of disbelief for me.
The only suitable word to describe this book is... basic. It's vibrant and filled with adorable illustrations and radiates positivity. However, it is a letdown content wise as the so-called advice doesn't really offer anything useful, insightful or outstanding. They are more of the you-don't-say variety and as another reviewer mentioned, I found the portion about how women should dress quite distasteful too. Nevertheless, this is a quick perk-me-up for those needing it.
Lovely little book that I read in small parts before going to bed. Some of the parts in this book were a bit meh since not everything in this book can be applied to real life.
