James Dean is the original creator and illustrator of Pete the Cat. He is a self-taught artist originally from Fort Payne, Alabama. His passion for drawing became apparent at a young age, and as a child, you could find James drawing his favorite characters like Snoopy and Yogi Bear.

James earned his degree in electrical engineering from Auburn University and went on to work for Georgia Power for a number of years. Eventually, he was called to pursue his art full- time and began selling his work at art festivals around the Southeast. It was during this time that he began creating paintings and drawing of his cat, Pete. The little blue cat showed up as a character in James’s artwork around 1999 and has been a permanent fixture ever since.

James Dean’s art has been sold in more than ninety galleries and shops across the United States. He has devoted his paintings to Pete the Cat for fifteen years and turned his natural love for cats into his life’s work. James published his first book, The Misadventures of Pete the Cat, a history of his artwork, in 2006, and he illustrated his first self-published children’s book, Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes, in 2008. There are now almost 100 published Pete the Cat titles with more coming out all the time. James is humbled every day by the success that this groovy blue cat has brought him. He says positively affecting children’s lives is his number one priority, and he is grateful to have such an amazing audience to work for.

My niece is now two and is obsessed with cats. She meowed at the lions at the zoo. Any book with a kitty (or a puppy) in it is automatically her favorite.

I have waaaay too many questions about this book, especially for a board book! Let's start out at the beginning: he's a kitty! *Squee!* So cute! Ok, by the third set of pages all this loving things is getting old fast and I'm tuning out; must FORCE myself to keep reading.

My coworker pointed out that we are not the target audience--fair enough--however, I am the grownup who gets to read the book 50 bazillion times to a demanding child and with a book this banal (haha, my coworker suggested "pedestrian" to describe this) I will go crazy reading it. There are board books, and then there are GREAT board books. This is not a great or even a good board book. This is merely another board book that is trading on the strength of a famous character.

Then, What About BOB, for Pete's sakes?! Where did HE come from?! This is the first time I've ever seen this character! You can't just drop a brother in out of NOWHERE! And what is going on with this family? Somewhere something just doesn't add up. Pete is blue with yellow eyes. Bob is black and white with green eyes. Mom is brown and white with blue eyes. Dad is brown and yellow with green eyes. WHAT the WHAT.

Thankfully the creepy factor is dialed way down for this one. All the cute little kitty-ness of it does not outweigh the tediousness and the strange family dynamics. And yes, I do overthink things.

This is an adorable but also incredibly simplistic take on Pete the Cat, aimed at an even younger audience. It feels a bit phoned-in and lacks the charm of Pete the Cat, which is a bit of a disappointment. I do think that very young kids will love getting to see a cute kitten and read about everything he loves... but, man, do I feel a little sorry for the people who have to read it to them over and over because this one is dull and not as engaging as the original stories.

While Pete the Kitty is very cute, I agree with others that Pete's stories seem to be getting more watered down and it seems to be more about continuing a brand than telling engaging stories. That said, this would still be a nice gift for a toddler just learning to turn pages.

Pete the Kitty is certainly a well-loved children's book character. But this adorable baby board book gives readers insight on the many things that Pete the Kitty loves. From eating birthday cake and singing songs to skateboarding and riding waves, it seems Pete the Kitty loves dabbling in just about everything. Most importantly, though, he loves his friends and family.

I Love Pete the Kitty has a short and sweet message about love that toddlers and preschoolers will definitely relate to. If this book is ever released as a regular-sized picture book, it would make a perfect readaloud addition to units on family, friendship, activities, and love. As it is now, the board book version is best suited for small group and one-on-one reading sessions with children ages 0-4.

Jack borrowed this book from the Ashland Public Library. Mama picked it out since we had previously enjoyed Pete the Cat's Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star book.

Right away, Jack smiled, pointed at Pete on the cover, and said cat. When I was reading it to him, he kind of lost interest except for the occasional "cat" announcement. But later, he "read" the book to himself and seemed to really enjoy the pictures.

Essentially, it lists various things that Pete the cat loves. The cute twist at the end is that everyone says they love him back.

I used to be Pete the Cat's biggest fan, but I'm getting tired of the watered-down, predictable books that are now being churned out. Still love Dean's artwork and the original character he created, but Pete's adventures are no longer very engaging. Even for babies and toddlers, this one misses the mark, even if Pete makes an adorable kitten.

Readers get to see all the things Pete the Kitty loves, from things at school, to activities, to foods, to his family.

A cute little board book about a younger Pete the Cat (thus the Pete the Kitty). Adults could easily spark a discussion with little kids after reading this about things the little reader loves. Little readers should also like the vibrant colors of the illustrations.

Cute rendition of Pete the cat’s big hits and best friends in board book form. This does not have quite the level of illustration that the rest of the series does. I wish there were more rhythm or rhyme or something to the text to make it more fun too like most of the series does. This is what it is—illustrations lifted from other Pete the Cat books to make a board book for ages 1-3.

My coworker brought this out to show me, telling me how ADORABLE it was. And it did start out cute, but I got bored quickly. Maybe the little ones would enjoy it more, but it didn't do much for me. Still better than the regular Pete the Cat books...

Great book for early readers!

Used this book to fulfill the schools summer reading requirements for my daughter going into 1st grade. She was able to read the whole book on her own save 3-4 words.

Pete the kitty

Yet another great Pete the kitty books. My little reader likes and enjoys reading Pete the kitty book and my toddler really likes to hear the stories as well as read them by describing what is illustrated. We enjoy Pete the kitty books.

4 stars for bright, colorful pictures for little babies. I'm not rating it that high though because I'm not a fan of Pete the Cat. I had a board book version borrowed from the library so atleast it was durable.

My niece loves Pete the Cat so we got this for her at the library. I loved this book because it reminded me so much of her; she is so happy and loves everything just like Pete the Kitty. The illustrations are so cute and the vibe is simply wholesome.
