Age: Toddler-Preschool
Art: Drawing
Concept Skill: Shapes

On one side of the spread, Zack draws a curved line. On the other side, Zoe draws another curved line on a window-like page. Flip the page and the lines combine to make a circle. Together with shapes, Zoe and Zack draw together to make a robot, fish, and more. Absolutely brilliant use of this medium to show children the beginning stages of how to draw.

These two board books are the first in the Zoe and Zack series. They feature die-cut pages that are sturdy enough to hold up to public library use. The opposites book offers clever uses of die cuts that turn stairs from up to down, rebuild castles with a single page turn, and bring back ice cream cones. Even more successful though is the shapes book where the two characters draw shapes together. The shapes are drawn partially on see-through pages that when turned form a complete shape. This clever mechanism makes for a dynamic book that will have children wanting to make their own shapes too. Two great board books with unique designs. Appropriate for ages 1-3.

I can see this working on both a toddler and preschool level, so a book for families with multiple children or one that you can read for several years. Toddlers will like the simple shapes, and as they grow in sophistication then can enjoy grouping the shapes into bigger pictures. And as they get comfortable with a crayon or pencil they can start drawing for themselves. A fun interactive book that encourages making your own art.

This book is great for reinforcing shapes as well as the different things you can create with shapes. I loved the see through pages where one character draws something and the other character draws something and what happens when they are combined. I think young children will have a blast figuring out what they are making. Can't wait to read this one out loud to Pre-K and Kindergarten!

I am a big fan when these books with acetate pages are done well. Zoe and Zack practice drawing different shapes together, and then using those shapes to create pictures (a bear out of circles, fishes out of squares, etc). A simple book for enforcing the literacy practice of "writing".

I got dozens of shapes books from the library and this one is the most engaging of them all. The clear pages that overlay lines as you read are so fun for my son. He can recite the whole book now.
