If you’re a woman who feels like you don’t have time to study the Bible in a deep and meaningful way, this is the book for you. 1 Samuel is a combination of Chris’s ability to unpack scripture in deep, practical ways and Hope’s ability to create questions that guide the reader and apply God’s word. Designed to be completed in just twenty minutes, each study is both substantive and time efficient and is useful for individual and group studies.
What Others are
“In a culture where many have little knowledge of the Bible, and question the relevance of the Old Testament specifically, studies like this are increasingly important. By asking the reader to think through the passages on their own, then orienting them in the place and time of both the author and hearers, this study helps bridge the gap between now and then and points us to what is to come.”
Kristi James, Acquisitions Editor for P&R Books
“I felt God’s heart for women jumping off the page. The questions brought out a rich balance of biblical history and emotional responses to God’s Spirit at work. It was a joy to delve deeply into the word of God in a framework compatible to the life and responsibilities of a woman.” —Heidi Faulkner, missionary for Campus Crusade for Christ
“I appreciate the combination of historical context, current application, emotional honesty, and connection to personal story. I love the use of the words like ‘hurt’ and ‘scared’ in the reflection questions as it draws out the truth and messiness of our emotional experience in our relationship with God. These studies have depth of richness and authenticity while being brief and attainable for women who have full lives and yet are committed to study the Bible.” —Stephenie Craig, LCSW, pastor’s wife and therapist

I used this book as part of my research for a writing project. I’m a mom of 3 little kids and need Bible studies that are accessible. This one was the perfect speed for me! I can’t wait to do more “At His Feet” studies
Marking it that I read this again because I finished their book on Lamentations that isn’t on Goodreads yet. I’ll change it when/if that gets updated
Bleh. Not good. I disagreed with their interpretation and commentary more than half the time. Sometimes it was way off! They advertise themselves as being able to do a study in about 20 minutes, which is not my style. But also, if you are doing Bible study then do Bible study. Dig in! Go deep! Read commentaries.Listen to sermons. These lessons were a pathetic eight questions covering TWO CHAPTERS of the Bible each time. And then more than half their questions were reflection/personal questions. Really? On historical narrative books like this, over half your questions should not be reflection questions. That is not the purpose of the text. Ugh. Not. A. Fan. Needless to say, I will not be recommending or doing any of their other studies. 😬🙈
So anyways, if you want a real study on First Samuel I would recommend The Village Church resources and Bible study on this book, which Jen Wilkin is one of the contributors. That one, although not perfect, is much better! Or an even better option than that is writing your own and doing it for yourself!
Did a 16 week Bible study on 1 Samuel earlier this year (broken into 2, 8 week segments). Each week required reading a chapter or 2 of the book. There were observation questions in the book to answer as you go through the readings. Then I liked how the book actually did a detailed discussion breaking chapters into smaller chunks and discussing groupings of verses. Then during our weekly studies we would go through the reflection questions, some, not all, of them in small groups to discuss. Interesting to dive into this Old Testament book and learn more. Appreciated the book discussions and my in person group discussions. Definitely a harder book to get through, but I liked learning more in depth about Hannah, Samuel, Saul, David, Jonathan and more.
Good, simple study of 1 Samuel. Appreciated the layout of the book which contained comprehension questions, a commentary, and reflection questions. The commentary and questions often elicited thought provoking discussions amongst our Bible study group. There’s some awkward wording and questions, but overall, it completed the goal of growing my head & heart understanding of this portion of scripture!
