Hey Survivor! My name is Sylvester Barzey and I am a best-selling horror and fantasy author. I grew up in the Bronx, NY, lived in the smallest state in the country for a while, and then transplanted to Lawrence, GA.
I’m a military veteran with an addiction to all things horror. My overall goal is to shine a spotlight on BIPOC characters within the horror/fantasy genre. From a young age, I was obsessed with horror movies, mostly Slashers. The mythos of the “Final Girl” trope was always something that appealed to me. The act of taking someone and watching them overcome the greatest odds to be the ultimate survivor has been a strong attraction to the horror for me.
But, what I didn’t realize growing up was all these survivors were White. Seeing only one type of person rise, builds blocks within people’s minds, it causes them to think that surviving is a trait only in one race, which is far from the truth. The Black community (Black Women for sure) has survival built into their DNA. History has shown us that overcoming great odds is something Black people have always done.
Being that I couldn’t find the final girls I was looking for (There are some don’t get me wrong and they are amazing), I set out to create them. I want to produce Black heroes who overcome world-shattering events and rise above them. My goal is for people to say Catherine Briggs’ name in the same breath as they say, Sidney Prescott and Laurie Strode. It’s my mission to change horror so that my children can look at it and see themselves as survivors.

The world as we know it is gone. There's a new world here, and it's filled with zombies! Catherine Briggs is a survivor, and she needs to find her family! Being stuck in a house, she tries to formulate a plan to find her family when she gets a bang at the door. A single girl, desperate for help. Catherine takes her on her journey to find her family when they are stopped by a circus. But not everything is as it seems, and who can you trust in a zombie apocalypse?
Full of twists and crazy turns, follow Catherine on her journey to find her family but beforehand, fight off some monsters and real life monsters.
I don't read many zombie books, but Barzey can definitely convince me too! This world is full of action, flesh eating zombies, sadness, regret, death, twists and turns, and an ending you won't expect! In this world, Catherine has to fight off both zombies and evil humans. You can't trust anyone in an apocalypse! I highly suggest The Planet Dead series! Barzey paints a great world for us!
“I don’t think there are any good ideas left. It comes down to run or fight from what I see.”
The nation has fallen. The world is in despair. We are run over by zombies and the only goal now is to survive. Catherine Briggs is a survivor. She knows what it takes and will do whatever is necessary to reunite with her family. But when an unexpected visitor comes knocking on her door, will she maintain her strict policy of distrust or risk death for another?
This book reminded me how much I love zombies. I haven’t read a good zombie book or consumed good zombie content in a while and it’s not for any other reason than happenstance. I’ve had Sylvester Barzey’s book in my library for almost a year now (my apologies for that!) and am so glad I picked it up. It was perfectly what I was in the mood for.
This is a fast paced, fun, eccentric cast of characters with a wild storyline. The scares are there and ready to play and the suspense is well done. Barzey leaves the book on a bit of a cliffhanger with questions of what’s to come because it is, yes that’s right, a SERIES! So if you’re looking to dive into something more world consuming, something that’ll be a full journey with horror and guts, this might just be the post-apocalyptic book for you! 🧟
I loved Bloodthirsty (Planet Dead #1) and can't wait to read the rest of the series!
I would have liked it to be longer but everything else was amazing. BA female MC who's giving me Michonne vibes from The Walking Dead, crazy twists, it sucked me in right away and I couldn't put it down.
The evil humans come into play early and often, hilarious banter in dialogue, descriptive and realistic action sequences and cliffhanger ending! It's perfect for if you are nostalgic for The Walking Dead (I totally am) but you don't want to wait for messed-up villains to show up and instead you want to be thrust into the dystopian/apocalyptic-world-action and terror right away. This was my experience and it was awesome.

Disclaimer: I received a review copy free of charge from the author, Sylvester Barzey, and in my participation with an Instagram Book Tour Company-Caffeine Book Tours. It was my choice to read and I'm leaving this review voluntarily.
Sue beats on the door of a house, needing help from the zombies chasing her. The door is yanked open by a woman holding a shotgun. Sue runs in while the shotgun goes off, taking care of the ones close to the door. That's how Sue and Catherine meet each other. Catherine wants nothing to do with Sue, she wants to get home to her husband and son. But the next day they head out together. Sue has secrets she keeps hidden but after things that happen to them the truth starts coming out. Star score 4/5, due to areas not fully meshing well and characters not explained well.
I was so excited to see the main character was a bad ass black woman but I was annoyed she was out there saving white women. Still a good read and I was beyond pissed by the ending can't say I saw that one coming. I would read something by this author again.
Bloodthirsty is not a book I would usually pick up but when the author asked if I wanted to review this book I still said yes. Because what better time to read out of your comfort zone and in the horror genre then at the start of the Fall, with Halloween around the corner?
Let me start by saying that I think the book is well written. The author clearly knows how to write and is able to write compelling action and fighting scenes. They are realistic as well. It seems to be written in third person omniscient. We really do get an overlook on all of the characters. This sometimes created us shifting from one character to the next in a few paragraphs within the same scene. But these shifts were reasonable well incorporated and not jarring at all. There is gore in this book so it isn’t for the weak hearted, but it is all fitting. As in, it isn’t added just for the sake of adding in gore.
In this horror book people have been turning into zombies and people have to fight for their lives. But when people’s survival instinct comes forward, sometimes the worst traits of us do too. It is not just zombies out there that you have to watch out for. I think that aspect of it was compelling but when a portion of that happened I felt that it happened a tad too fast in the story for me. I was still settling into this world and our characters and here we had a crazy ringmaster guy and his brothers. When it comes to the world building we get some idea of how things went from the past from Catherine and Sue, but I kind of miss the big perspective of how things are all over the world. Just a line here and there would have been enough to give the reader the bigger picture.
It was great to see there being female leads in this book. Catherine especially was ready to kick some ass. Sue is someone who will need to grow into her own. She is more soft hearted than Catherine is and that creates a bit of balance in this duo. Catherine is also POC and we do need more of that in the horror genre from what I understand from the author’s backword. Having said that, I had a hard time connecting with the characters. I just couldn’t really seem to care for them. They aren’t flat characters but I still couldn’t warm up to them either. Maybe that is the omniscient point of view. I always feel more detached from characters with this writing style.
Other than that though I think this book is a solid one. I would certainly recommend this one for fans of The Walking dead and fans of zombies in general. And if you want to be creeped out it certainly is great to read during Halloween.
So firstly, I barely ever pick up horror books. Fantasy is my main and favourite genre and then contemporary, so reading this book was kind of different and out of my comfort zone. I’m always scared I won’t enjoy the book or genre which is why I rarely read something I’m not comfortable with.
So the story follows the main character Catherine Briggs who is currently trying to find her way back to her family after zombie-like creatures have taken over the Earth. She meets many different people as well as comes face-to-face with many different obstacles she has to overcome.
So if I’m being 100% honest, I have mixed feelings about this book, but not necessarily in a bad way. This book is something I probably wouldn’t generally pick-up but I’m quite glad I did. The story was pretty well written for a new author and it makes me happy to know I’m helping an author out by reading their books and giving an honest review. But I found that I wasn’t completely and utterly hooked into the book and plot as I would have liked to be.
Personally for me, horror books don’t interest me too much and I think that might have been part of the reason I did’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked to. Overall, it’s an awesome read if you’re interested in horror and would like a short story to read (about 200 pages).
This book for me is 3/5 stars. I was hoping to enjoy it alot more than I did, however it was still a great book. Good job Sylvester! And thank you so much for sending it to me! I wish you all the best on your writing journey.

I always say “iM bOrEd WiTh ZoMbIeS” but I’ll be damned if reading books like Planet Dead don’t make me think I’m an idiot moron for saying that. Barzey clearly knows his stuff. There’s elements here of modern living dead, Romero, and even things like 28 Days Later; and my personal favorite zombie trope, “trapped in a building/house surrounded by the living dead.” This felt like a salad made up of the best walking dead stories of the past however many years ago the 60’s were. You’ve got volatile groups of characters being trapped in close proximity to each other; a study on the people and not the monster. But at no point does this feel disjointed, it’s held together perfectly by one of the most bad ass final girls; seriously, Catherine is great. I have to end this review by saying THAT CIRCUS SCENE 😳. K thx.
I was given this book, from the author, in exchange for an honest review.
This book first off, if you love the action of the movie World War Z or like the character types / feel of Dawn of the Dead (2004) you’ll like this book. The main character Catherine is very developed and her cohorts Sue and Tennessee also have good character development and progression. Where things to me get a little bit flat is the world building. We know plenty of the zombies and it’s discussed how they came to be, but I feel as though the setting should’ve been more established. With that said, I still enjoyed this book and hope In the subsequent books the author(s) take the time to develop the setting just a smidge more. I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.
Barzey’s first novel is a fast paced horror tale of survival containing all the elements of a good horror story (gore, sinister characters and a kickass heroine). He has created an apocalyptic world in which all your nightmares do come true. Questionable characters with ulterior motives lurk around every corner and the only person you can trust is yourself. Survival of the fittest. Can’t wait to delve back into the Planet Dead universe.
Action packed from start to finish with fantastic character development and real imagination. This was a brilliant zompoc novel. Barzey has done something great here that will stand the test of time. Hopefully we won't have to wait long for book two.
I was sent a copy of Planet Dead: Bloodthirsty by the author in exchange for my honest review. Thank you so much for sending it to me! • Planet Dead, a horror story about the zombie outbreak, kept me intrigued from the beginning! It started off with a bang and kept getting better! There were so many plot twists that I couldn't keep up and it was an awesome start to a series! If you like the Walking Dead or Supernatural, I think you'll LOVE this book! It's available on Amazon and is free through Kindle Unlimited 😊
This was a solid intro to a horrific series filled with zombies galore! I really enjoyed this and just flew threw it. It felt like watching an old school zombie movie and it was a blast. Highly recommend this to all my zombie lovers out there. Can't wait to pick up book 2 🙌🏽
I have little experience this genre. I also am not a huge fan of zombie apocalypse stories BUT to my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Catherine is a fantastic heroine and the plot twists were great! I look forward to reading the next book and stepping further into this new world.
Catherine is on a mission, to find her husband and son. They were lost within the chaos that is the Zombie Apocalypse. While alone, most of the way she does meet up with another woman Sue. They quickly learn to rely on each other.
Both of the women soon learn that Zombies aren’t the least of their worries. Especially, with some clowns who have decided to dive into cannibalism. So you can only guess how this is all gonna go down. Ewww.
Sylvester has written a good post-apocalyptic zombie book. With characters that you could look up to, that you care about and hope they just don’t die. I loved Catherine, her determination and that will to live. Plus, she had this wittiness to her that I admired.
If you’ve read my previous reviews, I usually don’t read books in the third person. I tend to not be able to connect with the characters on an emotional level. But this was so well written that I couldn’t help but thoroughly enjoy this.
I read this book in one sitting and it was amazing! I don't even watch Walking Dead but I so enjoyed this. I can't believe that little wench Tennessee! I hope our heroine makes it out and brings a reign of terror to her!
The main character is bad a s s. She is a mommas on a mission. She works her way through a new and scary world. The cast of characters go from the Benin to w t h, Twisted and gory. Good stuff. Recommended
Looks like the zombie apocalypse brings out the crazies and the crazier. I love how this book centers around Catherine a mother trying to reconnect with her family after the Zombie apocalypse and what lengths she goes through to help out others. But of course she seems to run into trouble wherever she goes.
If you like the walking dead or 28 days later, you’ll love this book. The main character (Catherine) is a real badass! I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
I really enjoyed this zombie read. This story is about very strong character named Catherine she's on a mission to find her family but find's little trouble along the way. We also meet sue I kinda liked her. Think it was because Catherine is more the I'll put my foot up you're butt and sue is jumpy and believes people can't be bad and all that girly stuff. Still don't know what to think about the whole clown thing. Hated the ending no happy going on that's for sure but it's zombie outbreak what is! Can't wait to read more of Catherine hopeful and sue.
In a book world, filled with varying degrees of the apocalypse, Planet Dead: Bloodthirsty impressed with more than a story of a dead world. It didn't trying to lure you in with gory, ambulatory corpses and extended dialogue either. It sought to give the you a strong leader that wasn't a man. It's been happening a lot- and Planet Dead did not fail.
The story tells of Catherine, a woman looking to reconnect with her family after everything went to heck in a hand basket! It's also about trying to keep connections severed, but for the ones you love- which can be impossible unless you simply have no heart. When an unexpected visitor arrives on her doorstep, literally, she has to decide if she can take on a traveling partner while trying to find her loved ones.
The story was filled with humor, action and zombies! I didn't connect with Catherine as much as I thought I would, but I liked her. A lot! I appreciated her strength, with is always needed during the apocalypse and her wit. She was a woman on a mission, but still found a way to smile through it all. Plus, we need more female, lead heroes, yeah?

Planet Dead by Sylvester Barzey is an action packed adventure I'd recommend to everyone! The story follows Catherine Briggs, a mother trying to find her way back to her family. But there's just one slight problem- zombies are everywhere. From the very beginning Catherine has proven her bravery and her determination to be with her family is evident. The character development we see throughout the story is beautiful. If your looking for a good book that makes it impossible to put down then Planet Dead is the book for you. 3.75 stars rounded off to 4 Lately, I've been very much into Zombie movies and books that have apocalyptical themes. So, I was quite excited to start reading this book. Planet Dead ticked all the right boxes for me, with all its elements. It has everything you want from a book with zombies. Catherine, our protagonist, is a badass woman who defeats a lot of zombies as she hunts down her family. She is a very different protagonist than what I am used to, mainly because her thought process is quite intense and ruthless. So, reading from her POV was quite interesting for me. The other characters were pretty interesting too, but I enjoyed reading from Catherine's POV the most. There were certain parts though, where I felt a little bit confused as to what was going on with the plot and things moved a little too fast for my taste, but all in all, Planet Dead was a pretty great read and I enjoyed it a lot.
A story of the zompoc, but these brain-fried, hungry cannibals are fast!
The first thing you have to learn in the zompoc is to shoot them in the head! Or chop the brain in two! Or cut their head off! Or smash their skulls with a big hammer! But don't try to outrun them! These are fast zombies. They may not catch you right away, but they don't get tired. And don't try to wrestle with them. They're stronger. And don't try to push their face away with your hands! They love to snack on fingers! This well-written story of the end of the world includes characters of two distinct types: loveable or detestable; kind or mean; trustworthy or slimeballs; evil or saintly . . . well, unapologetic at least! This tale reflects the best of us and mirrors our worst horror. Expectations are raised and disappointments are rife. The storyline rides the rollercoaster of ups and downs, an occasional whoop-de-do, or spin you on your head. Yessir! It's got all the necessary ingredients for a great read! I'm looking forward to part 2.
America is now the home of the dead and the land of the survivors! Building a wall and isolating from the rest of the world sounded like a good idea when trouble was everywhere else but now we got some American sized problems and we’re locked inside a burning house!
First, Sylvester Barzey is an excellent writer.
I don't do zombies but Barzey wrote such a captivating story it didn't matter that it was centered around zombies. I enjoyed learning about the characters and watching them as they went through their journey. The ease in with how he introduced his characters who would be important to the story was chef's kiss. Barzey was able to balance plot and character well.
I do wish the book was a bit longer but that's because it was so good I wanted more. I was legit sad when I finished. Also, holy plot twists is all i'm going to say with out spoiling anything but did not see that coming.
I recommend this book to people who love zombies and a good story. I plan to continue to read the series as I want to see where it goes.
