Harper is stuck representing Sargis' son Erik for murder. Harper thinks that he's good for it. All day long. Yet she must take on his case and find some way to get him acquitted. If she loses this case, she might lose her life. No pressure....
Helping her out is brand-new associate, Damien Harrington. Damien has a secret that he is hiding from Harper, a secret that would be devastating to him if it got out. Yet Harper and Damien work very well together. Damien takes the lead on the Erik Gregorian case because, quite frankly, Erik turns Harper's stomach.
Damien's first big case that he brings into the firm involves a wrongful death. This case might make both Harper and Damien millionaires. Damien is on the verge of settling when he finds out something that makes him regret ever taking the case on. Any money that he receives from a settlement becomes blood money, and this eats away at his conscience.
Harper is representing mobster son, with the help of his newly hired partner Damien. He is a ruthless mobster, but police newer been able to arrest him before. Parallel running second case is about the cancer patient.
My first read for the author. I just wanted to try a new author and see if I can get something gripping. I will not say I am disappointed, but I am not happy at the same time.
The storyline is good. I liked the way it all started and the story buildup was going great. Don't get me wrong, but I fail to understand why does the author spread the storyline a little too far and then try to close all the parallels in one short chapter. This is exactly what happened in this story. The story threads were being opened up one after the other and then it all culminated to an end in one short last chapter.
One additional thing that I noticed here. This book is supposed to be "Harper Ross" story. But this book is anything but "Harper Ross" storyline. The whole book is dictated by "Damien Harrington". The name of the book is spot on. But all-in-all "Harper Ross" has taken a back seat with no more than 5-10% of the story dedicated to her.
Can read once, but you will not be missing much if you didn't.
Enjoyed the book immensely, wish I could have given it 5 stars, but the lack of proof reading was pathetic and then, the biggest and worst faux pas, when you refer to Wells Armstrong as Andrew McMason. Then again, when Judge Clarion states "The defendant is free to go. Thank you for your service. You perform perhaps the most valuable service in the judicial system. I understand your sacrifice, and I am humbled by it" It sounds like he is addressing the jury, but he starts off with the Defendant. Doesn't make any sense. Proof-reading Proof-reading!!!!!
This is quite a great insight of the legal system and the insight of the Defense lawyers who are tasked with the responsibility of defending their clients in the court system! The plot is twisted, UNDER lined with the responsibility Harper shares with his own family, especially his daughter who is battling for her life combating a form of cancer and only Harper is championing her battle. Her mother has given up on both her marriage and her daughter, leaving Harper to deal with his client's guilt or innocence and fighting for his daughter as well. Thanks for letting me get to know another author and all little about the strain Harper and other lawyers operate under.
Harper takes a case where the head of the Armenian Clan is accused of murder. She has to get him off or she's dead and her daughters will be trafficked. Her associate, Damien, gets a case of medical malpractice but needs to help her. Can they get him off?
I enjoyed this story. I liked how Harper and Damien worked together but also had separate cases. I liked Harper's actions towards Damien when he wins a case that she on which she did not help him. I liked how Damien is able to handle what comes at him. He tries to have everything set before going to court. Harper is the same way. I liked how they bounced ideas off one another to find the answers they needed.
The characters were interesting but there were some anomalies. A six-year old child spoke like a college-educated adult, for example. I spotted about a dozen typos such as extra words, missed words, and wrong words (snuck in by the computer program no doubt) which could easily be fixed. The courtroom scene contained an element of unreality. Still, the story flowed well and I read it in three nights.
The story line is not a problem but the editing was atrocious. Too many erors were allowed to slip through. The worst for me was the slip up with the name Mc Mason. Why in heavens name two chapters were left with Mc Masters instead of Mc Mason. I am going to read the Alibi. If these errors recur I will be forced to discontinue.
Good storyline, kept my interest. Not sure why it's called the Harper Ross series when it was mostly about Damien, her associate . Which the little start to the next book it appears it to will feature Damien. That's okay though because he has and I interesting past and it's sounding like an interesting future. Yes I'd like to read the next in the series.
A defense attorney firm with two lawyers, two cases and narrates in the first person. Even though different characters speak, they each read as though they are telling their side of the story. Each time I was a little confused which character was speaking.
I liked the legal protocols explained and the twist at the end.
It's a win win for Harper taking on Damien as her associate. He is keeping some secrets but gradually opening up and he is bringing in the big bucks with his talent. The story is more about him and his family problems than Harper and there are some errors in the continuity but nothing that detracts too much from the plot for me.
Damien's early life activities eventually sent him to prison. After getting out he became a lawyer. He has challenging family drama that he must handle as he undertakes various cases that demands almost constant attention. His life has given him wisdom to pick up on things that help him be successful.
Plots are solved too easily. The build up is maybe there, but then pow it is solved. Without giving it away, the plot could have tied in the pharmaceutical aspect of the death of the big to the death of Shelly. Where she found a connection with a drug used during kids surgery. This book was ok, glad it was free. Would not have wanted to spend $ on it.
Good reading, to the point and very interesting. Would recommend this author for more books .
I liked the storyline and all the carectors, it was interesting reading and made you think you really committed the murder. The end left you hanging but with a clear understanding of who the killerwas.
In the legal thriller genre, Harper Ross is a refreshing character. This novel is fast moving, with just enough twists and turns to keep you reading well past lights out. I will definitely be reading all the rest of these novels.
I chose this rating and liked this book because it was a good and fast read. I did however find a few typos. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a good courtroom mystery.
After reading several of books in this series i am finding that this author is getting better with each book she writes and I look forward to more from her!
Another riveting and page turner for the author. All her legal thrillers are just thorough and conclusive. I can't wait to read the next book for Damien Harrington, he's gonna be a delightful addition to the Harper Ross series!
Good book . Really enjoyed it . It didn't have as much thrill to it like I enjoy but in had enough suspense to keep me reading. I hope the next book in the series has a little more thrills. I will still recommend this book.
This book was pretty interesting. Gives you insight into how lawyers really work. Not all that ethical. The main character Damien was a real interesting character.
I enjoyed this book overall but I don’t buy that Damien’s daughter who is SIX speaks the way she does. Examples of the “six” year old talking: 1) “I was dying to find out how your trial is going. I’ve been thinking about that all day.”
2) “I would say he sounds like a douchebag, but okay.”
I enjoyed reading this book. It was a good legal thriller. Great plot. And 2 different stories in that book makes it even better. First time reading this authors work and will make a point to read more.
I'm really loving Damien and his dark past. I want to see more of him and his kids in the next book. I loved all the twisted connections between the characters. Looking forward to the next book.
This legal thriller revolves around a despicable defendant and a victim with a sorted past and daddy issues. It is good enough to be an enjoyable read.
A good, but not great book. The overall story was good, although very unbelievable in places. the character development was ok but the dialogue left a lot to be desired.
