I wouldn't recommend this book unless you're looking for a handful of gory thrills and not much else. The book seems to be driven only for the author's desire to shock the reader with unnecessary and poorly paced slaughter of humans, and instead of using these moments to actually drive the main characters down a dark road, he very literally is satisfied to repeatedly state how close to "madness" they are. The only descriptive moments come when people are being mutilated by tentacles or having a nightmare of an alien world. The dialogue is extremely weak, the characters are shallow and unbelievable, and the so-called "homage" to Lovecraft begins and ends with a giant monster and his cult. This book feels more like a
Pros: - Sometimes unpredictable - Cool monster
Cons: - Everything feels made up on the fly - Lack of rhythm - No character development - Characters' actions and reactions make no sense - Weak descriptions of people, places, events, mood, and feelings - Terrible dialogue
Fans of Lovecraft will enjoy this story. I consumed Horror In the Clouds in one sitting. I enjoyed the vivid descriptions and the engaging story flowed with ease. My eyes were glued to the text as Shoyer weaved his dark spell. His vision of darkness and madness left a visceral stain on my mind.
My only complaint was the over use for few key descriptive adjectives that could have been avoided but other than that, I quite enjoyed to homage to H. P. Hovercraft and his style. Loved every tentacle from the Clouds moment!
Great novella by Scott Shoyer! HP Lovecraft I’m sure would be proud with Horror In The Clouds. Story had me hooked throughout the entire book. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for good cosmic horror. If you can find a copy🤷♂️. 5⭐️.
