Ahh, my 500th book on Goodreads! Another one of those Norwegian ''housewife porn'' books you can buy at the grocery store. They're always a quick read at around 250 pages, so I gave this series a shot!

But I didn't really like it. Oh and the perspectives were confusing, even though the book was in third person and described the feelings of different characters, I felt it was a little messy. But it starts with almost 40 year old Johan Stornes, the son of a rich big farm, who still hasn't married yet. His eyes fall on a young girl named Mali Buvik - 19, blonde hair and nice body, but a poor girl. He is drunk when he meets her, and touches her without her will, and she is infuriated. Time passes, but he can't get her out of his mind. He goes back and says he lost a knife, and while he stammers that he likes her, he tries to rape her, which makes her hate him even more.

Johan tells his father that he wants Mali or no one else, so Johan's father goes to Mali's father and says he will give them enough money to pay down their debts and much more, if his son can have her. It's an amazing offer, but Mali's parents don't sell their children. They talk to Mali, and she ends up deciding to accept, to save her family. He couldn't be that bad, could he?

The wedding is set up quickly, in such a hurry people thinks that Mali might be pregnant - But in her wedding dress her waist is as thin as ever. The wedding night comes, and Johan is drunk. Mali is afraid. He rapes her violently, and continues to do so. She has never experienced or even dreamed of such a pain.

After a while Johan starts to drink and not touch her that much anymore, and Mali becomes friends with his grandmother (his mother hates her, so no help there). She assures her that he's not a bad guy, but even though you can sometimes get a glimpse of niceness, it's soon gone again.

Will Mali be able to survive as the wife of a rich farmer, even though her dreams are broken?

For me it was horrible to read about what this man does to this girl, who's less than half his age. Rape is a usual thing in these kind of books, but this was the worst. Buut there may be hope in the next books, especially since handsome 25 year old Jo has arrived at the farm, and Mali may have fallen for him, but that could easily mean trouble. But if you like reading about danger, by all means, go for it. But I'm not going to..

I must admit to you all that up until reading this book I had never heard of Anne-Lise Boge and wasn't aware of what a talented author she really is . I am fully aware that this book has been translated from Norwegian to English so I was also aware that there could potentially be a few translation errors but I was and am surprised at how well this book really read . It read fluently , no translation mistake what's so ever . A perfect read . It's a gripping read based in the early 1900's in the Norwegian countryside where the only son of a wealthy farmer should really find himself a young wife from the same background to help run the farm . Meeting a young servant girl , Johan Stornes knows that he must have her as his wife at ANY cost . Being from a poor farming family , Mali Buvik isn't the right choice but Johan must have her .
A very well written story full of hatred , love , lust , sadness and contempt .
This is the first in the series and I must say it will NOT be the last in the series I read .
I'm not normally the kind of person who enjoys a book the first time I read it by a new author but with the obvious talent that Anne-Lise Boge has I was hooked by the end of the first chapter . I can't wait to read more .

I think it has the potential to be good a book. If only it had been edited some more. The characters don't make sense. Everything is written out so there's no room for me as a reader to meditate on it or to experience the events in scenes instead of already fully developed thoughts from the characters. I like the parts about farming and guilt. Wish I got more of that. But then there's that moment were the author completely misses the mark on God belief. Why do authors continuously bring that up when they clearly have no idea what it means? Why is that the only area were research ain't needed? So dumb.
