Gilbert Morris was one of today's best-known Christian novelists. He lived in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Johnnie. He is the father to Lynn Morris and Alan Morris
Gilbert Morris has always been one of my favorite authors and I really enjoyed reading this book again. It's been a number of years since I took the time to sit down and read this series and it amazed me at the things that stood out to me this time, some the same as before and some different. One of the things that I really enjoy about Morris's books is how well he writes his characters. They're so relateable. Also, I love how he much research he does and incorporates people from history, some well known and some not so well known into his stories. He also keeps them as true to history as he can while adding in fictional characters.
Josh Spencer leaves his home in Virgina and seeks the frontier as a place to escape.
Patrick and Elizabeth and their two children join a wagon train headed by Josh Spencer to become pioneers heading west.
Years ago I enjoyed all 38 books of the House of Winslow series. Over the Misty Mountains has the same spirit as the House of Winslow that I loved so dearly. Not only a historical novel, but an eternal message.
The characters were real down to earth people. I enjoyed the smooth read, the steady rhythm, and the exciting plot. Add historical characters such as Daniel Boone, Little Carpenter and William/Lydia Bean, and an outstanding story is created.
The answer to the reason so many Americans were willing to make the dangerous journey across the Appalachian mountains. A fascinating story of the incredible difference Christianity made in their lives.
This book was a pleasure to read! I live not very far from where this settlement was located, so I enjoyed it from that standpoint, but oh so much more! This is a very historical area: Cherokee, the starting point of the Trail of Tears, the Civil War & the battles of Chickamauga (5 miles to my west) & Chattanooga (10-15 miles NW), even Revolutionary War battles, plus more recently the labs at Oak Ridge & the TVA system. Is it any wonder I Iove history? My people could be amongst these settlers! But I must say this before I go on: as a Christian, I agree with taking the Gospel of Jesus' Salavtion to share with the Native Americans (as I have Native ancestry as well), however, many of their ways of doing so was just WRONG! OK, moving on. The story is written well. The characters are realistically stitched together. The landscape, both geographically & political, were easily visible in my mind. I've often wished I could've seen this area before the settlers came! As beautiful as it is now, it must have been breathtaking back then. There is adventure in this story as well as danger. Heartbreak & Love, even Romance. Christain beliefs & mores vs non-believers thoughts & feelings. All woven around a core of Non-Fiction reality-based history! Yes, a very enjoyable yet still educational story for today's society. I highly recommend it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this historical fiction story. I did not want to put it down. The story was very believable to me because I know some of the history of the Tennessee Appalachian territories. And I also enjoyed the biblical truths that were interwoven into this story and plan to continue the series.
I liked that the author uses some actual historical figures in the book. The story was good. If you are not into “biblically based fiction” this is not for you. I personally don’t mind. I liked the transformation of Hawk throughout the story. Interestingly, I liked the part where Elizabeth tells him that people we love are gifts. Be glad for the time you have them.
An intriguing read. I thought sure he would go back and get his son. That must be for the next read. drawn out and tiresome in spots, still, I found it hard to put down. I liked it.
What a wonderful book...comes to life in your heart and mind. The characters are so real. The setting magnificent. Thank you Mr. Morris and Mr. McCarver. Starting the next book immediately.
Such an interesting story of many different people all trying to start new lives in a new place. Leaving homes possessions and loved ones behind Hard to stop reading until you get to the last page And you wish for more.
