Vanessa is a strong, independent woman. Or she was, until she awoke in a world strangely changed. And when her husband and father of her children is in trouble, Vanessa realizes it is up to her to figure out what went so wrong in the world.
Vanessa’s journey takes her to the Department of Temporal Adjustment, the department tasked with handling all time travel, where she and her spunky kids go on a hilarious adventure through time—all while traveling incognito.
Veronica R. Tabares, MFA, MLIS, is a passionate award-winning author on a mission to make a positive impact in people's lives through the power of storytelling. Many books later and she is still fueled by the initial creative spark that started it all. Writing and her love of archaeology aside, Veronica enjoys nothing more than spending quality time with her loved ones who inspire her to be her best version daily.
'Time Without' is one of the most original stories I've ever read and it's clear in every single line that Veronica R. Tabares had immense fun with it. It's about Vanessa: a time-travelling mother of four who wakes up one day into a parallel universe in which women are subjugated. You know, more than usual. Women aren't allowed to drive, or to travel without a male escort, and the law stipulates they can't make decisions or hold any position of authority. Facing the unexpected death of her husband, Vanessa suddenly realises her reality is not as it should be, and with daughters in tow sets out to save the world.
Vanessa is a 'time monkey' – someone able to swing through time with no adverse affects (like madness). She and her daughters visit the year 3027 and make a hideous discovery. Women and children no longer exist.
This book was just unbelievably fun. I adored the dream sequences toward the start of the book, and sentences like “She was flabbergasted, shocked, surprised even” where you could just feel the joy of the writing process radiating out of the text. One of my favourite aspects of the novel was the character Philip – a man cursed by supernatural handsomeness in the year 3027, who bitterly wishes people weren't so prejudiced about appearances. His cherebic and amiable wife Annabell is equally burdened, by an extreme capability toward mathematics that is her secret shame. Their lamentations over their good looks and brains were hilarious. My favourite character, however, was Audrey, Vanessa's youngest, with adorable speech patterns and a propensity to climb on anything and everything.
Looking at the author's other works, I think this may be a sequel to Department of Temporal Adjustment, although I haven't read it so cannot confirm. (It's on the metaphorical To Read pile now though.) I read this as a oneshot and it was still thoroughly enjoyable, so I'd imagine the first book isn't integral to the reading experience of 'Time Without', if indeed it is part of a series.
It is evident that Veronica R. Tabares is a very talented author. Veronica R. Tabares weaves a fantastic tale of sci-fi fantasy, mystery, and suspense, with intriguing twists and turns that easily captivates the reader's attention from the beginning. It's something I can read, put down, and come back to. I'm enjoying it very much. Highly recommended for any sci-fi fan who likes to read.
Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader's pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, well thought out themes, characters, and language that make us shudder for its honesty, clarity, and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, Time Without, is such a book.
Author Veronica R. Tabares weaves a fantastic tale of sci-fi fantasy, mystery, and suspense, with intriguing twists and turns that easily captivates the reader's attention from the beginning. The story had every element a good story should have. An exciting plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that really make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that's something I look for in a good book.
The book description only gives a snippet; 'Vanessa is a strong, independent woman. Or she was, until she awoke in a world strangely changed. And when her husband and father of her children is in trouble, Vanessa realizes it is up to her to figure out what went so wrong in the world.
Vanessa’s journey takes her to the Department of Temporal Adjustment, the department tasked with handling all time travel, where she and her spunky kids go on a hilarious adventure through time—all while traveling incognito.'
Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself to find out! But I will say it's well worth the read. It's my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed.
This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly spellbinding journey!
It’s one of those books that come along once in awhile that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that fans of the Science Fiction genre will love having a nibble this one!
If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Veronica R. Tabares in the future. I would definitely recommend this book. Five stars from me.
A fresh, funny twist to time travel, Tabares’s outstandingly hilarious series tells the story of a time-traveler mother of four who gets entangled into a set of hilarious situations while attempting to fix the timeline shift.
In the first installment, Vanessa, a happily married mother of three little girls, is working toward her degree in Archaeology at the University of Washington. Her accidental step through a time portal at the university lab transports her to the future. Her family’s contribution to the future forces the authorities to send her back in her time, but the consequences of going through the time portal will bring chaos in Vanessa and her family’s lives.
In the second installment, Vanessa wakes up to find herself in a parallel universe where women are subjugated: they cannot drive, travel without a male escort or take any major decision. Her husband’s sudden accident makes Vanessa realize that things are not as they seem on the surface. With her daughters in tow, Vanessa sets out to fix the shifted timeline and save the world.
In the third installment, the stakes rise for Vanessa and her daughters to fix the timeline as the voting for the Nineteenth Amendment draws near. Maddie and Becca must join hands with Philip, a scientist from future, and head into 1920s Nashville to ensure the bill granting women to allow to vote is passed without a glitch.
Tabares remains a brilliant observer of human nature as she sketches her relatable and likable cast of witty, spunky, and even somewhat eccentric characters with ease and precision. This is as much a story of time travel as of family ties and enduring marriage: Tabares’s characters stick together in times of trouble and muddle through with sheer courage. Tony doesn’t get much space in the story, but the series reveals the basic compatibility of Vanessa and Tony’s decades-long marriage and the love that binds them together. There is little that changes between the couple at each story’s end, and this very realism makes the series so effective.
Spontaneous and enthusiastic Vanessa as a mother is so genuine and relatable, readers will have hard time not to see her as a real person. The girls’ joyous recklessness is totally contagious, making the reader instantly fall in love with them.
With irresistibly funny passages the reader wants to read out loud and superb narrative, this is a series that deserves readers’ attention.
