From princess to private detective.

Exiled, stripped of her title and magic armor, former paranormal princess Terra Cross is living a new life as a private detective. Working side-by-side with her father, she hunts down galactic bail jumpers hiding on Earth, rescues kidnapped children from otherworldly gangsters, and stops ritualistic summonings of interdimensional monsters.

But her old life comes knocking when a vampire solider shows up on her doorstep with a job: to find the missing twin heirs to the vampires’ empire. Assailed by monsters and machines, Terra seeks the help of the galaxy’s most infamous assassin, a darkly tempting mage with devastating telekinetic powers. What begins as a rescue mission, however, soon grows into a conspiracy that reaches back centuries and spans worlds.

Vampires & Vigilantes is the first book in the rebooted Sorcery & Science series.

Ella Summers has been writing stories for as long as she could read; she's been coming up with tall tales even longer than that. One of her early year masterpieces was a story about a pigtailed princess and her dragon sidekick. Nowadays, she still writes fantasy. She likes books with layered plots, lots of action and adventure, and a touch of romance. When she is not busy writing or spending time with her two young children, she makes the world safe by fighting robots.

Originally from the U.S., Ella currently resides in Switzerland. She is the author of Sorcery and Science, a fantasy adventure series set in a world splintered by magic and technology.

I struggled in writing this review because while it is listed as book 1 and can easily be read as the first book, I read the prequel novel first in the Dominion Rising box set. The prequel book is an absolute emotional roller coaster that was incredible that I cannot recommend enough (5 star book). I do think I had a different reactions to characters and events referenced then people who are meeting and hearing about them for the first time. New readers will likely be intrigued where I would flash back to the prequel events and focus on how it made me feel to see the characters reunited. Totally different reading experiences, but I think both would be enjoyable.

To focus on this book, Ella's world building skill continue to be top notch. This series has a lot of political intrigue as well a combination of both magic and science. The melding of all three has me hungry for more. The main character, Terra, is wonderful and strong without being the best fighter around. Her best trait may be her moral code and beliefs which she refuses to toss aside no matter what happens to her (and a lot has). The side characters are great and very three dimensional. I love Terra's relationship with her father. The males interested in her are very complex and lack Terra's moral center, leading them into some grey areas. Their history with Terra very complicated. I can't wait to find out how this will all play out.

Rising from the ashes takes a little work.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. A galactic cat and mouse chase as seperate cases for Phoenix Investigations turns into one big conspiracy. Loved Terra and her father, they have such a close bond. The guys that comes back into her life, post dethroning, are both potential love interests - but with a catch. Out of the two, I preferred Jason. Aron has way to many ulterior motives for claiming Terra.

With the case close to being solved, there are a few twists that I didn’t see coming. The plot was well paced and allowed for some down time for our mc. Can’t wait to get the next book to see what the favour will be.

I love this authors Legion of Angels series and this book sounded great but there were almost too many plots going on in this book. It was hard to follow because a major event would happen and then the characters would move on like it was nothing. I'll probably give the next one a try because I do love th idea of these stories and the characters.

This isn't a brand new series by Ella Summers but a reworked and re released one. I'm a massive fan of Ella Summers and had been wanting to read this series for quite a while but hadn't been able to get a copy, so when I heard that she was re working and the releasing them again I jumped at the chance to get my copy as soon as it came out.

I started off by reading the prequel to this series which is in the Dominion Rising box set and fell in love with the story, characters and world then. However I'm always a bit cautious on starting a series after reading a prequel first as sometimes you've grown attachments to characters from that book who are not in the series, or you can read spoilers. However I needn't of worried as the prequel just built up the story for me in this first book, Vampires & Vigilantes. I loved it and really enjoyed it, was such a great read. Yet again Ella Summers has created another epic read with a cast of characters that kick ass and are just jumping off the page at you with all that's happening. The world building, yet again, is sublime. When I can vividly imagine the place that I'm reading about so strongly that I can even smell everything described, I know that I'm reading a great book. I love being transported to the different places in books and feeling like I'm there, and that's one of the things that Ella Summers does so well.

I really enjoyed reading about Terra Cross and her PI business in this book. I'm already in love with one of the characters (don't want to mention any names as o don't want to spoil anything) but he's such a smouldering, dark character with a hint of a good side, that I just love him. Please give me lots more of him! I can't wait to read the next book in this series and am hoping that it won't be too long till the next book is released as I can't wait to delve back into this world again. Five out if five stars for me with what has been one of my favourite reads this year

I read this 1st book in the series because I fell in love with the characters in the prequel novel included in the Dominion Rising collection. I had to know what happened to them and I had a few questions about how people reacted to things that I wanted answered. Well... after reading this one I doubt I'll be reading any of the other books in this series. I don't doubt that plenty of people will continue to love these books and dive into them one after the other because the story is intriguing and pulls you forward.

My reasons for not continuing are because some of the plot devices just seemed so blatant.

I’m a huge fan of Ms. Summers, and I was excited to be given access to the first book in the redone Sorcery and Science series. The book was everything I’ve come to expect from this author: well-written, interesting plot, and great characters. The author really knows how to keep the reader interested throughout the book, how to keep the reader engaged, especially with the characters. I found myself enjoying the characters so much, I was conflicted about whom I wanted Terra’s love interest to be. And, really, there should only be one choice. But, I came to like one of the characters enough that I really want him to have a chance, even though he really doesn’t deserve one. Anyway, I do admit that I was overwhelmed sometimes with all the names and places that were mentioned in the book. It slowed my reading down some to try and place people and places, but it didn’t impact my enjoyment. I also want to mention if you’ve read the Legion of Angels series, don’t expect that with this one. This book is excellent, but it is very different. I’m excited to see what comes next. Give it a try; you won’t regret it! Highly recommend! Thanks to the author for the e-copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

Hmmm

I like the premise, the heroine and her father, a lot. The storyline has the potential to go to amazing places.

It lost the first star for reading more like a martial arts movie, with fight after fight after fight, instead of private investigator mystery... which is what it was billed as. An 'intergalactic paranormal private investigator' who is a deposed princess, prophet and mage. A tale of sorcery and science... She spends the first half of the book spinning from fight scene to fight scene, which disappointed me.

The book lost the second star by being a cliffhanger. Sigh. Good mysteries don't do cliffhangers... they don't need that level of hook to entice me to buy the next volume. VI Warshawski, Spenser, the Incryptid series and others in the genre don't lean on cliffhangers.

I am certain the author has the skills to avoid these issues. I hope she does avoid them. I won't buy the next volume until I can check sufficient reviews to ensure I'm not stuck with the same dilemma.

A spectacular read!

From princess to private detective...
Exiled, stripped of her title and magic armor...
Now, the former princess is a Paranormal PI...
Soon, her old life comes knocking....

The author is one of the most brilliant writers I ever had the pleasure of reading. Every time I read a book by the author, I'm blown away by her writing, her characters and the worlds she creates. Each book of hers that I read is better than her previous work! That is a fact - my fact!

The world of Sorcery & Science is vast, complex and completely intriguing. I cannot wait to read more of this world and the characters. I'm so intrigued.

Full of mages, paranormal hunters, supernaturals, action, adventure, magic, insanity, surprises, darkness and missions.

Perfect for readers of urban fantasy/sci-fi/fantasy.

Terra and her father exiled instead of a death sentence, start a new life not as Princess and King, but as paranormal PI's. 2 years later the elite vampire who betrayed her and cost her everything, now shows up on her doorstep to hire her to find the missing kidnapped heirs to the Emperor who was violently killed. Her soft spot is missing kids. Wanting nothing to do with him, or the job, he hands her one of the boys' personal items and as an oracle, she has a vision of their torture. Together they look for the missing and travel worlds filled with machine monsters as well as flesh and blood, betrayal, political machinations, assassins, and discovery of a centuries old conspiracy. Excellent book. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Another reader mentioned a prequel. While I haven't read it I would recommend reading it. I liked this book and I wasn't lost but the characters have too much history for this to truly read as a first book.

A lot happens and we are introduced to a possible love triangle. Don't worry it's not extreme just enough to add some tension. I would've actually liked the story to slow down a little bit and build some character depth. The characters need a little more introduction then they get along with some world details. So much is just mentioned off hand a little more structure would've helped. Like I said this book doesn't truly read as a first in a series. Still I liked it. I wish I knew what happens next.

I have read a large number of Ella Summers books and while I finished this book, I really did not enjoy this book.

The premise sounds great, but I did not care for the main characters, who was a down on her luck prophet after being stripped of her and her father's magical clothes and accessories because of a betrayal. Perhaps, if the book had started with how they went from nobility to outcast and penniless I might have enjoyed it more, but they are interacting with characters that have history with that is never fully explained and you don't understand the backstory behind their relationships.

2.5 stars....

Im so disappointed in this book, after devouring Legion of angels i looked for anything else by Ella Summers and came across this, the imagination of the world itself is amazing, but i felt the Author kind of plonked me in the middle of it no rhyme or reason.... New people kept popping up every other page from new planets without any further explanation of their species or home world. Also there seemed to be multiple stories and backgrounds going on which confused me...

And Vampires???? no real explanation to what makes them Vamps because apparently they can eat, procreate and go out in the sun.....

Suffice to say i will probs give the rest of this series a miss

so here’s the thing

If the man that set me and my best friend up, me getting exiled and my BFF getting an execution order, decided to pay me a visit to offer me a job…..yo bro not only would I tell him to pound sand I’d make it abundantly clear how much karma was a behatch….sux to be on the receiving end doesn’t it?!? Instead this girl is polite holds a conversation and caves offering to help him…..yeah NO. Idc who’s been taken or why. He didn’t care when his peeps put a bullet between my BFFs family’s eyes. Get real do you honestly think that’s how people are going to respond? If sooo then you deserve any bad bs You incur believing him.

Eh

Good story, but the pacing seems way off. Also, it is using two tropes that I absolutely hate:
1) the female just happens to have a power that prevents her from killing. Argh, can no male have such a power?
2) the two love interests keep over stating throw she is such a good person, and should not be around such monsters as the self. Again, argh!

I did read the whole thing, but I don't think I will bother reading any more of the series.

HOLY COW!!

Can't wait till the next installment.. Ella Summers really rocks the genre with her fast paced writing... this is a series to be read and enjoyed and you won't be able to put it down!!! An all thumbs up read for everyone, but you'll find you have to continue with the series just to see what other nasty plot twists she has in store 😜

Perky, Enjoyable Tainted Romance Story

Summers has created a mysterious universe, hidden from most of humanity, divided into empires with different rules. The protagonist is a young woman, former princess, currently a private investigator. A false accusation two years prior had robbed the former princess of her birthright. And then it gets complicated...

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Ohhhhhh man oh man, another great author Ella Summers

Usually a first book in a series takes a bit of building the characters, to get to the action. Not this book! There was action, twist and turns from the very beginning. My kind of storyline, action with attraction, then more action. Read this book and you will be like me, watching for book 2.

I wish i had known there was a prequel novella because while i got thr gist, sometimes there were overwhelmingly numerous references to a world that it seemed like i was supposed to already know more about. There was a complex workd being built around me in fits and starts and sometiems there were random chunks if info, blam! In your face.

Love!

This is great new series and I can't wait to read the next book.I do wish there was a prequel to read because I did get a little confused. However loved the love triangle going on with the vampire and Jason. Ella Summers has become one of my must read authors like Patricia Briggs and Lora Leigh!

This reboot of the Sorcery and Science series is really too notch. At times it feels very much like the Legion of Angels series, but different enough to be enjoyable on its own. Terra, Jason, and Aaron are hurtling toward their destinies, but will it be a destiny as monsters or savior's? Guess we'll have to see.

Read prequel first

The prequel intrigued me. I just had to know what happened next. I love the 3 main characters. Don't know who I'm rooting for, so will keep checking for book 2. Meanwhile, I may just check I to her other series.
