Something evil lurks beneath the shimmering city of Merlina Dangerous wizards have taken over several small planets in a far corner of the galaxy but without the use of modern weapons of any kind. What's going on out there? While some of the Daystar crew believe the wizards possess a deadly evil force, others say it's just a mixture of myth and fairy tale. But Merlina is not the only place where something is not right. The Daystar has a new surgeon on board, Dr. Temple Cole. While polite, intelligent, and extremely beautiful, she is definitely hiding something. Can the crew uncover her secret before it's too late? Join the young Space Rangers as they seek to divert the wicked plans of the wizards. Share in their excitement as they see the power of Jesus conquer the evil forces of Satan. See how the crew of the Daystar learns that riches don't necessarily bring happiness, and things that look good on the outside can be rotten to the core.
Gilbert Morris was one of today's best-known Christian novelists. He lived in Gulf Shores, Alabama, with his wife, Johnnie. He is the father to Lynn Morris and Alan Morris
Again, this is one of my favorite Christian science fiction series because of the memorable characters and futuristic world created in this series, even if plot is kept basic. Wizards of the Galaxy was not my favorite by far in the series, although the introduction of Doctor Temple Cole was definitely unique. I also like that Gilbert Morris brings not only Christianity but lessons into each of novels.
I read this entire series as a tween/early teen, so I'm rating based off my general impression of each book. I hope to reread this series again, because it inspired me to write Christian space opera. So, I'll be rating this and subsequent books based on my rough memory of them.
I love the addition of Dr. Temple Cole, she has violet eyes, so she stands out in my mind when I think back on this series... She has a lot of past baggage and has to deal with Captain Edge falling head over heels for her... The team has a dangerous mission in dealing with the wizards. Seems like magic, dark magic has a hold of all these people... but they can overcome it with their faith in each other and God.
Have you ever watched Star Trek and just been like, "they understand that was a demon right? A full on fallen angel wants to damn the souls of men, demon." Well I have. In fact the whole franchise is sitting right there on the edge of Spiritual truths, too afraid to make the connections. Well except for Uhura who totally got that worshiping the sun is not the same as Worshiping the Son. (Seriously that's an episode go look it up.)
Anyway I digress, if you were a young Christian back in the 90's then you had few options for faith centered science fiction. Gilbert Morris books from Moody press was one of them. The Daystar series in particular had enough of a Star Trek vibe to draw in those who devoured episodes of Next Gen like candy.
Rereading the series as an adult is not entirely disappointing. On the one hand the writing is simple, but I've always been an advanced reader so even then it wasn't the challenge but the concept that drew me in.
This book especially, Wizards of the Galaxy, deals with spiritual warfare. The crew of the Daystar is sent to a planet ruled by Wizards who practice Dark magic. It's not the most action pack climax because most of the fighting is done in the spiritual realm through prayer. It may come across as "preachy" but it's warfare waged right.
This book was a great read! It kept me spell-bound (sorry for the pun) from beginning to end. I can't wait to read the rest of the books in this series, as it will always be one of my favorite series!
