From expectation to reality, Kate C. details each step of her experience in deciding how and whether or not to adopt. While theory differs vastly from reality, fur-master of the house, Theodore, teaches Kate the basics of how humans should behave and what a cat expects from them. Lack of privacy is something any cat owner needs to get used to from the very moment they bring their new feline into its new forever-home, as cats believe that anything and everything they see, including their human, actually belongs to them and needs to be by their side at their beck and call. Theodore’s delightful journey with Kate is something any cat-lover would easily be able to engage with... stray cat hairs and all.

As a veterinary nurse, I most definitely have to say that Kate C. has certainly done her homework, while also adjusting to life beautifully as a cat owner. The advice she gives, sometimes with humorous anecdotes attached, is well-worth adhering to. It is important that pet owners recognize that owning a cat and owning a dog are two entirely different ball games; dog-owners will quickly learn this, as cats have low tolerance for humans who do not treat them like royalty. Having been owned by many cats over the past 30 years, I couldn’t help but giggle in some places while reading about both Kate’s and Theodore’s experiences as they come into one another’s life. Seasoned cat owners will find many of Kate’s narrative to be a tad amusing (eg. constant invasion of privacy when she goes to the toilet), as they are easily able to picture it happening many times over with their own fluff-balls. The DIY areas of the book are brilliant and an absolute must, especially for those owners who live in high-rise buildings or want their cat to have access to the outdoors. I very much enjoyed Kate and Theodore’s extreme adjustments as they become a part of one another’s lives, and highly recommend How to be Owned by a Cat to all would-be cat owners as a warning and a lesson that humans don’t own cats... they own you from day one, hands down.

This lovely little gem is a how-to guide for purchasing and owning your first cat by a virgin cat owner. I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of information and humor thrown into the mix. A step by step guide (so you don't screw it up) ensues and is quite entertaining. Well-written and fun to read, this is for all cat lovers or those considering becoming one in the future. I quite enjoyed this one!

I received this book from the author in exchange of an honest review.

In the second book we got to read all about how to handle (or try to) two cats and all one should do to help these two cats to cohabit peacefully (or as peacefully as possible). In this book however it is all about her experiences with her very first cat, the wonderful Theodore!

We begin, of course, with the adoption process, and boy it sounds like so much fun to sit in a room to find your potential cat for life, I can only imagine how hard it is not to scoop them all up. XD After that we read some more on the adoption progress and then we head to what to do when you have your first cat. We get tons and tons of fun tips, lists, and information on all you need for your cat, about vet visits (and maybe using some stress relief stuff to make sure the visit goes well), about grooming (and that Theodore needs 3 people), about plants and also about cat behaviour. I also learned about alpha/beta/gamma cats, something that had me looking oddly at the pages as I mostly know Alpha/Beta/Gamma animals to be wolves, and more specifically werewolves. XD Yes, the books I read. It was all very well-written and informative. I am not planning on getting a cat soon (allergies are in the way), but I love reading books about it. Maybe one day they will make a super-anti-allergy pill and I can get a cat. Haha, by then I will be so informed about having a cat because I read all the books about them. XD

The book includes hilarious stories about Theodore and all that Theodore does at times (from Poophoria to getting his owner to find him on all the times when he wants to inspecting the house) and also her trying to figure out how cats work and what makes Theodore tick and why he does things the way he does. It was tons of fun to read!

I also loved that the last story in the book was done from Theodore’s POV!

All in all, I really had tons of fun reading this book and I do hope that Kate will write some more books about cats (or gets a third cat to make that How to be owned by a 3rd cat book). I would recommend this one to everyone thinking about getting a cat or, like me, are interested in reading about cats. This is a short book but filled to the brim with information and fun.

Cats remind me of whimsical and capricious Greek gods and goddesses. Sometimes, cats are like Baroque European aristocrats with sophisticated finickiness. They are like spoiled children with no regard to manners in the sudden pulsing of stalking and jumping, rigidly dominated by their blindly unchecked ego. Whatever of the feline nature it may be, there is undoubtedly more than one of it; cats are convincingly intelligent, bracingly artless, and surprisingly affectionate with a display of individualities particular to each cat. No wonder there are celebrity cats as follows: A Cat in the Puss walking around as if he were man, Tom outwitted by Jerry, Garfield as laid back as his lookalike master, Felix the Car becoming a timeless icon of the style, and Theodore the Cat, who likes to challenge, "Who's the Boss?" in this amusing read.

With an imposing name associated with a man of outstanding achievement, Theodore likes to think himself as a lifetime resident of a presidential suite attended by his matron-in-waiting Kate, a virgin cat owner without prior experience of raising a cat. Her meeting with Theodore, whom she happened to adopt from a pet shop, is a match made on earth, orchestrated by time and chance, aka Fortune. Or it may be the stars that shine brightly above their heads. The journey both Kate and Theodore has thus far embarked is akin to a real one of a road trip by a small caravan, consisting of bumpy drives, drive-ins, park-ins, give-ins, give-outs, etc. Kate's relationship with Theodore parallels that of the Chef and his stray gourmet cat named Apollo in John Steinbeck's "The Amiable Fleas" regarding the narrative's realistic atmospheres illustrating the significance of ordinariness in daily life. Both works celebrate the values of simple pleasures that give a fresh hold upon our problems and different perspectives on life.

This charming little book also attests to Emerson's tenet that thinking is the function, and action the functionary. In other words, the understanding of truth results from the successful union of knowledge and practicality on reality. Kate comes to the A-HA moment by realizing that her knowledge about cats from books and the media is not complementary to its applicability to tending her cat, Theodore.

I picked up this read because in reading its summary, I felt related to the author's case for being a first-time cat owner without initial interest in cats. Her daily interactions with Theodore has taught her that there are no bad cats but only misunderstood cats due to a lack of patience or a deficiency in compassion on human parts. What will happen when what you read from books and watch from Youtube about cats contradict the realities of your Toms and Mollys at home? Just as lawyers do not learn their trade at law schools till they practice, pet owners will not know about their flurry fireballs till they clean their poops. In light of the above, this book is a lightheartedly vivacious and entertainingly down-to-earth read that makes you emphasize with her experience as a first-time cat owner.

Furthermore, for those who criticize the author's poor writing style as posted on Amazon reviews, I want to tell each of them that being a purist in regard to English Underfiled does not guarantee that you are not an ignoramus. Good writing means not in immaculate grammar but in the richness of sentiments and of thoughts. Therefore, I regard this book as an excellent read to read; especially, if you are a virgin cat owner like we are.

This was a great little book about being owned by a cat for beginners from a first-time cat-slave. There is no expert cat advice, just information that a beginner would find useful if considering bringing a cat into the family, or for someone who finds themselves unexpectedly adopted by a cat.
I've had cats in the family for most my life, so there wasn't a lot in the book I didn't already know, but I thought it was well laid out with plenty of good information.

There were only a couple of little things I noticed about the book:
Ear tipping is not universal. In countries such as Australia, a sterilized animal gets a tattoo inside the ear rather than having its ear cut.
The author mentioned the benefits of grain-free cat food as it better resembles a cat's natural diet. However, fish was mentioned numerous times. Fish is a popular flavour in cat food but along with beef and lamb, is also a common allergy in cats. Why? Because again, it's not a natural part of a cat's diet. Cats generally don't like water, so why would they be eating fish? I only mention this, as my current cat has a fish/seafood allergy and it took me a long time (and many trips to the vet) to work out why he was constantly having issues with his ears. Even non-fish flavoured cat foods often contain fish oil, so it is something to be careful of if you suspect your cat may have an allergy.
Finally "kneading biscuits"! Is this some kind of weird American expression?

Overall, a good book that would be useful for anyone recently or about to be adopted by a cat.

Well-organised, informative and full of delightful pictures, this book is a great resource for the first-time cat owner. There are many cat compendia around, but this was the first one I had seen that actually addresses itself to the novice.

As with any 'how-to' book, it shouldn't be regarded as a 'bible'; one needs to take responsibility for one's own parenting, but most of the information seemed correct as far as I could see, and the book certainly expanded my own knowledge; I learned a number of things I had not known, even after more than half a century of living with cats.

I do have one caveat - please, please do not ever hit your cat with a stick. Cats bruise very, very easily, and it isn't an effective training mechanism anyway.

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book for the purpose of review.

I am a dog person and what was I doing learning about cats? Curiosity. I always thought cats owned people, not the other way around and I was laughing as I found confirmation in this. The stories the author relayed about her and her cat were simply hilarious. I found this book to be an easy, and humorous read. But it wasn't just fun, it was also a very instructive manual for cat owners. The author surprised me with her acquired knowledge of cats. The author covers everything from taking care of cats, the choice of their food, cat litter, vaccinations. I especially enjoyed the author's witty perceptions of cat personalities and habits.

"How to be Owned by a Cat" Truer words were never spoken! This book was light, easy to read, informative - Yes, even though I've owned cats for quite a few years in my life, I learned a few things - and at times , funny. It was a joy to read about the antics of Theodore. Reminded me of when my own Milo was a kitty - just two and a half short years ago, and my now deceased A.J., and J.R. who hubby and I had the pleasure to be owned by back in the 1990's. But, all that aside, I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in owning a cat, or just someone looking to satisfy their curiosity about some cat behavior.

I wouldn’t take this book as absolute gospel, but it will give you an insight into bringing a cat into your life. The writer has based her research mostly on her own cat and to be honest doesn't come across as an expert. For the cat owners among us, we recognise many of the anecdotes. It takes patience to bring an energetic kitten into the household. Like most cat owners you find out by trial and error what works and doesn’t, but this book gives you some handy tips on how to get started. I just adopted my 4th cat and I can say that none of them were remotely alike. So read this book and then get ready to let the little fur ball surprise you and completely wind you around its little paw.

Too True! Fun Book.

Even as I was reading this book, my cat decided to sit in my lap and lay across my iPad. I moved my device to another location, however her tail had to drift across the surface repeatedly. Cats are amazing and definitely unique. As a seasoned cat owner (37 in my lifetime) I can say, this book is a great resource for getting started with your new relationship. The witty dialogue keeps you reading and Theodore’s voice is definitely heard. Thanks for the entertaining and informative read!

Purr-fectly adorable

I am a long time cat person, but I love reading about others experiences with these wonderful animals. If you have a cat already you will love this book. If not, you still want to read this for the humor it has. Though if you are thinking about getting a cat, get the cat first then read this book. Cats are wonderful creatures and you would really miss out on a truly wonderful experience.

Not as in-depth as I hoped and also really short. I expected a book, this is more like a pamphlet. Still a fairly good and informative resource for first-time cat owners like me. I'd recommend this book if you have no idea what living with a cat is like, but if you're at least somewhat familiar with cats this guide might feel a little too bare-bones and casual. On the other hand, it truly IS a simple action plan for total cat noobies.

I bought this based on some reviews and I was not disappointed. This is a highly enjoyable book for all ages and even for people who do not own cats. The writing flows fast and the command over language is excellent. The humour is subtle and well timed. Loved it.

Informative book and an easy read.

This humor inspired book tells us exactly what we need to know (or be reminded of) before we head out the door to get a cat. I suggest reading this book so you can do it right the first time.

Great

This lady has really got cat personality down pat and all good advice. I've had cats all my life and they're all different. Peace Lily is another toxic plant for cats that she didn't have on list.

Cute, concise, and helpful. It must be self-published, however, because it is absolutely riddled with grammatical errors on every page, which drove me nuts.
