This is an OK cover. Good use of graphics. Good representation of the story and hero. OK composition and interesting title work.
To start with I am going to admit that I am in a bit of a mood funk today. And I am guessing that played a big part in how nitpicky I was being while reading this one. Pushing that aside I will say that I did enjoy it overall.The writing was good. The pace was excellent and I never felt the need to skim. There was some OW drama that was pointless (IMO) since it didn't cause any issues. I am SO over ridiculous cartoon villain like behavior from OW in these books. Especially in a case like this where it didn't cause a problem at all and was wrapped up with very little fanfare. There was a nice array of secondary characters as well. Although the mother felt a bit like an afterthought and I would have liked to have seen more involvement in the story from her character.
Olivia was a sweet heroine. I don't have a lot to say about her. I liked her personality. I do wish she would have shown more backbone at times instead of settling when it came to how she thought Nico felt about her. Nico, on the other hand, I had a love/hate relationship with. For the first 40% of the book his constant inner thoughts about using her and sending her back, not to mention his hot/cold routine grated on my nerves. The first couple times he had sex with the heroine felt cold to me. Especially the one in the dressing room. I did warm up to him as the book went on, but I still ended up being annoyed at his inability to admit he loved her right up until the book was almost finished. The whole Valentine Day thing pissed me off immensely, and I wanted Olivia to take a stand and decide she deserved more than a guy who couldn't love her.
But like I said, even with the things that annoyed me I still got sucked into the story and ended up enjoying it. So two thumbs up from yours truly.

After reading book 1 in this series, All In, I was wishing, hoping and praying for a book about Nico. I just knew this man would bring some good alpha.
Nico was broody. He didn't let many in. He chose the path of his father - even when it cost him his very best friend (Alec from book 1) at a very young age. It felt like he turned off his emotions and didn't let anyone in. Once he saw Olivia, those walls were put to the test. He often tried to internally reason with himself about what he was feeling, attempting to downplay his reaction to Olivia. Even going as far as nearly making a huge mistake in order to convince himself he didn't want her. I personally would have loved him to face his feelings earlier on in the book.
Olivia was a really good heroine. She was young and while she grew up in a less than ideal situation, she was actually very sheltered. Caring for her ailing mother left her very few options and she had come to realize that her fate was really not in her hands. Once she met Nico, she started to feel things that she never thought she would have the opportunity to feel. I did wish she would have stood up for herself a little more and not just accept what scraps she was given. Even put Nico on the spot- but her past and the fact that she never imagined she would even have someone like Nico, left her willing to settle.

Despite not wanting to sound like a tween, I have to say it. OMG! Let's see if I can do this book justice. First, let me just say I turned into a total sap when I finished the epilogue. I actually sighed like a lovesick fool. I love that Sarah Curtis went a bit edgy with this story. I'm a sucker for the unemotional Hero and Nico was above and beyond my expectations.
After getting a look into what caused the rift between Nico and Alec, this book started off where "All In" ended. We got Nico's POV of the motel scene when he came to Alec's aid to save his girl, River. That scene led to Nico following the trail of what got Royal, River's brother, into the trouble that pulled River in. This is where it all begins for Nico.
One look at Olivia and Nico was a goner. Except he doesn't know it. He's a rational man. He's only taking her to stop the thugs from moving in on his territory, right? It can't be because she actually means something. He's gotta keep her a bit longer than planned. It's smart business. It's not because he can't let her go, Right? Oh Nico. *Shakes head*
Nico is the son of a mob boss. The empire will be his someday and he has trained since he was 18 to show no emotions, to be strong, patient and deadly. He's been this way for so long, he doesn't even know what emotions are sometimes. Until Olivia. Sweet Olivia. The daughter of a prostitute who sheltered her so she could have a better life.
I absolutely loved how the author gave such a sweet, slow burn love. We got to see in actions instead of words how these two become more to each other than they possibly could have expected.
The book was all about them as a couple learning each other and facing obstacles together. Such a refreshing change. The way Nico treated Olivia is every woman's dream come true. The fact that he was so good to her even when he was clueless to his feelings made it even more special.
I don't know how the author can top this one. Love it! ARC provided by author.

It’s like a fairytale except Prince Charming holds a switchblade…
While reading Bad Beat, I had to keep reminding myself that Nico was a baddie. Nico is in the Mafia and his Dad is the Big Boss. We learn at the very beginning that it had been Nico's plan from the time he was a child, to work for his Dad. The family connection did not give him a free ride, he had to work and whack a few people to get to his position. But, at times, it was easy to forget that he had a switchblade in his pocket and a gun at his back. See, I forgot, because he was kind of sweet in a bossy, alpha, you are mine, kind of way.
Nico has learnt over the years that it’s better to not show emotion. Emotions and affection can make you weak. When Nico’s childhood mate, Alec needs his help, he doesn’t hesitate to use his connections. Unknown to Nico, this favour leads him on a path that brings him face to face with the one woman who can crack the barrier he hides his emotions behind.
Olivia's led a very sheltered life. My first thought when she was introduced was – how did a very sheltered 22-year-old end up dressed like a prostitute? Oh, it would be easy to assume she’s acting out in rebellion, running away or has been lead down the wrong path. Turned out I was totally wrong and wasn’t even close.
So, the very innocent Olivia happened to have caught the eye of two very influential Mafia guys…on opposing sides. They’re both bad, but one is just a wee bit ickier than the other. Lucky for her, the less icky one is Nico, and he wants to help her. Olivia’s mother is ill and she can’t afford all the medicine she needs to buy for her to get better. Nico offers to get her away from the icky mafia dude and look after her mother, in exchange for certain services (wink, wink, nudge, nudge).
Nico originally planned to wham, bam, thank you, ma’am Olivia, but those plans changed once he realised that he wanted to be the only wham bammer in her life. He manages to talk her into marrying him and they wham bam till their hearts were content.
Now, while all the wham bamming is going on, there are few highs and lows that Nico and Olivia have to face. There’s this psycho chick who wanted Nico, baddies who want to separate them, and baddies who want to use them. Nico does his Prince Charming act, with a switchblade and his gun, saves the day and carries his princess off to their castle.
I really enjoyed Bad Beat and struggled to put it down when I needed to go to work…and exercise…and help hubby celebrate his birthday today. I really must love my hubby, I stopped reading at 90% (when the baddies were being extra bad) to do the birthday thing.
There are a lot of sexy times in this story and you definitely get to see their connection with all the wham bamming going on. I did get a little frustrated with Nico and his drawn out determination to keep his heart locked away. Yeah, Nico, those heart flutters mean you FEEL something for Olivia, you dodo head. I also thought that sweet, little Olivia was a little too naïve and innocent. All good though and got my requisite heart flutters and goofy smiles by the end.
I definitely think Sarah Curtis’ talent has increased with every new release and this is her best work yet. I will be reading more of her stories in the future.

First things first, someone, anyone, needs to tell Bad Beat it had no right to be as romantic as it was. Seriously, this book was romantic as fuck. I just - ahhhhh. Sarah Curtis is really out here writing a modern day Cinderella story on the sly, like, what?!?! I - I just, ashlsdkhehgg, my brain is a puddle of goo right now.
SOOOO, yeah. This book was weird. It was weird in that I started out very meh about it. Seriously, I was about to DNF this bish @55%, but then I felt bad because I had already told you guys that I was reading it. However, something. . . happened. I - I fell in fucking love you guys. I fell head over my mother freaking heels for Olivia and Nico as a couple. They were just - *sighs* everything. Their romance was akin to a Cinderella story, but with mafia-shit added for funsies. Basically, I both loved this book, and but was also vaguely bored by it? I'll admit it, I'm strange you guys.

Once Upon a Time, there was a girl named Olivia who lived in a brothel. Her mother was very sick and thus she was forced to become the mistress to a high-ranking mobster. However, one day her knight in shining armor appeared. His name? Nico. Nico took one look at Olivia and whisked her away to his "palace." Once there, he demanded that they wed, for her safety of course. Even though the Knight in Shining Armor swore he'd never fall in love with her he clearly cared for her deeply. Over time both the damsel in distress and her knight began to fall for each other. BUT WAIT - insert mafia-shit here. Thus, I guess the real question is, will they live Happily Ever After?

So, I'm not sure where these two rays of fucking sunshine came from but they must, and I mean they must, be protected at all costs. Seriously, Nico and Olivia need to be protected at. all. costs. Especially Olivia. That girl has been through it, and I am so glad that she found her her Knight in Shining Armor, aka, Nico.
Basically, the entire time I was reading BAD BEAT my emotions waffled between, she deserves everything under the sun, and dear lord she is so boring. See, Olivia's personality, in a nutshell, was. . . nice. She was nice. Even though she had been raised in a Brothel she was still somehow very sheltered? make that make sense, but i digress. However, I think her calming and kind presence was exactly was Nico needed. Also, Olivia was the kind of heroine that was impossible not to like. Not liking Livvy would be the equivalent of kicking a puppy. Like - you may be bored by her, but you also want her to achieve all the happiness in the world. Speaking of happiness, let me quickly talk about our tall, dark, and handsome knight, Nico.
Similar to Olivia, Nico, was. . .interesting. Well, he was interesting in that I found him at times really bland, but also really fucking romantic. I'm gonna be honest, not a lot of fictional heroes really make me swoon. I'm very particular about my romantic gestures (IRL//fiction) and there was just something about Nicos that - gah, that made me melt into a puddle of goo.
Nico was very much the strong silent type. He was tall, dark, handsome, and very broody, and yet. And yet, he was also unbelievably romantic. Nico really showed how much he loved Olivia through each and every one of his actions. I really liked how the only times he was ever "soft" was around Olivia. The minute he met her you could just tell he thought she hung the damn moon and the stars.
✿ ᴛʜᴇ ~ ʀᴏᴍᴀɴᴄᴇ ✿
Like I alluded to in the beginning of the review, BAD BEAT, to me, read like an alternate mafia version of Cinderella. There was just something so romantic and whimsical about the romance between Olivia and Nico. From the way Nico came out of nowhere and swept Olivia right off her feet, to the way Nico was just so gentle and soft around Livvy, and finally, the way you could feel the contentment and love just existing between Olivia and Nico. Their romance was palpable, and their love felt so real and genuine.
In addition, one of my favorite things about Olivia and Nico as a couple was just how rock solid they were. I never once doubted their love for one another. I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Nico would always be there for Liv, and Olivia would always be there. If ever there was a ride or die couple, it would be Nico and Livvy. Moreover, I loved how author SARAH CURTIS really showed the love Nico had for Olivia, and visa versa.
Oh and I must note that every time he called her ❝Tesoro❞ I melted into a tiny puddle of feels. I don't know what it is, but I just love when a hero calls the heroine a nickname in another language. . . yeah, i'm a basic b like that. ANYWHO, the romance in BAD BEAT was top notch, and TBH it's what kept me reading. I was just so enamored with Olivia and Nico that I had to keep reading. Idk, I think I need some romance in my life, and BAD BEAT delivered.

Another review, another bout of awkwardness. . . *sighs* i guess it's par for the course at this point. Basically, I just got done explaining why I liked Nico and Olivia, and now I'm going to have to explain why I didn't like them. Or, maybe dislike is to strong, I think ambivalent works better. Yeah, I was pretty ambivalent towards Nico and Olivia for a good chunk of BAD BEAT. I think it's because there was literally no conflict between them. Seriously, they were that couple. They were so in love that even their arguments just devolved into sex and love inspired affirmations.
Also, as I mentioned, Nico and Olivia separately were just. . .boring. They were very bland when they weren't together and I think as a couple they were a lot more interesting. Essentially, my emotions towards Nico & Olivia really depended on the chapter. Some chapters I was whole heartedly invested. Other chapters? LOL. I was bored out of my damn mind. Like I said, this book was a weird one.
✿ ᴛʜᴇ ~ ᴍᴀғɪᴀ sʜɪᴛ ✿
You guys, I think it's time for me to officially admit that I just don't like, what I've lovingly dubbed, "mafia-shit." I just don't. Rarely has mafia-shit ever worked for me *cough* the Made series will always be an exception *cough*. More often than not, it just feels very tacked on, or, I get annoyed by it because I want to get back to the romance. In the case of BAD BEAT it was the former.
The mafia aspect of this book was. . .weird. Idk, there was no sense of urgency, and Nico never really felt like a mobster. TBH, I'm still not even sure what his job was. Like, I know he wasn't the head honcho - his father was - soooo, did that make him second in command? Or, was he just a random enforcer? IDK, and TBH, I don't really care. Moreover, SARAH CURTIS decided to leave any and all "mafia-shenanigans" until the very end of the book. Seriously, Olivia gets kidnapped at around 90% of the book.
Hoo-fucking-ray. I'm so glad all of this is happening now at the end of the book. So, freaking, glad. Conversely, when I looked at the summaries for book 1 and book 3 I couldn't find any mention of mafia-intrigue. Thus, it begs the question, why was Nico randomly in the mafia in the first place? I guess we may never know (or i should've read book 1. . .)

If there's one thing I want you to walk away from this review with, it's this; BAD BEAT was one of the most romantic books I have read in 2021. Seriously, BAD BEAT was that romantic. Olivia and Nico, while as plain as white bread, also had the cutest flirt-banter, as well as, the most romantic dynamic I have read about in a while. In addition, BAD BEAT also spends the last 1/3 of the book preparing and focusing on Olivia's . I personally loved the way it was introduced into the story and it lead to some amazing moments between Nico and Olivia.
Ultimately, if you're looking for a romantic as fuck, Cinderella type, mafia-having, accidental fairytale centered book, then I highly suggest you try BAD BEAT.

SOOOO, yeah. This book was weird. It was weird in that I started out very meh about it. Seriously, I was about to DNF this bish @55%, but then I felt bad because I had already told you guys that I was reading it. However, something. . . happened. I - I fell in fucking love you guys. I fell head over my mother freaking heels for Olivia and Nico as a couple. They were just - *sighs* everything. Their romance was akin to a Cinderella story, but with mafia-shit added for funsies. Basically, I both loved this book, and but was also vaguely bored by it? I'll admit it, I'm strange you guys.

Once Upon a Time, there was a girl named Olivia who lived in a brothel. Her mother was very sick and thus she was forced to become the mistress to a high-ranking mobster. However, one day her knight in shining armor appeared. His name? Nico. Nico took one look at Olivia and whisked her away to his "palace." Once there, he demanded that they wed, for her safety of course. Even though the Knight in Shining Armor swore he'd never fall in love with her he clearly cared for her deeply. Over time both the damsel in distress and her knight began to fall for each other. BUT WAIT - insert mafia-shit here. Thus, I guess the real question is, will they live Happily Ever After?

So, I'm not sure where these two rays of fucking sunshine came from but they must, and I mean they must, be protected at all costs. Seriously, Nico and Olivia need to be protected at. all. costs. Especially Olivia. That girl has been through it, and I am so glad that she found her her Knight in Shining Armor, aka, Nico.

Basically, the entire time I was reading BAD BEAT my emotions waffled between, she deserves everything under the sun, and dear lord she is so boring. See, Olivia's personality, in a nutshell, was. . . nice. She was nice. Even though she had been raised in a Brothel she was still somehow very sheltered? make that make sense, but i digress. However, I think her calming and kind presence was exactly was Nico needed. Also, Olivia was the kind of heroine that was impossible not to like. Not liking Livvy would be the equivalent of kicking a puppy. Like - you may be bored by her, but you also want her to achieve all the happiness in the world. Speaking of happiness, let me quickly talk about our tall, dark, and handsome knight, Nico.

Olivia twirled to Nico with a smile so big, her cheeks hurt. ❝I loved it. Thank you. I can't believe you remembered such an inconsequential thing.❞

Similar to Olivia, Nico, was. . .interesting. Well, he was interesting in that I found him at times really bland, but also really fucking romantic. I'm gonna be honest, not a lot of fictional heroes really make me swoon. I'm very particular about my romantic gestures (IRL//fiction) and there was just something about Nicos that - gah, that made me melt into a puddle of goo.
❝I told you we didn't need to come here. I have a perfectly fine dress at home I could've worn.❞ …
❝And I told you,❞ Nico said, hugging an arm around her shoulders and steering her deeper into the store, ❝this is a special occasion, and fine is not good enough. I want you to have the best.❞
Nico was very much the strong silent type. He was tall, dark, handsome, and very broody, and yet. And yet, he was also unbelievably romantic. Nico really showed how much he loved Olivia through each and every one of his actions. I really liked how the only times he was ever "soft" was around Olivia. The minute he met her you could just tell he thought she hung the damn moon and the stars.
✿ ᴛʜᴇ ~ ʀᴏᴍᴀɴᴄᴇ ✿
Like I alluded to in the beginning of the review, BAD BEAT, to me, read like an alternate mafia version of Cinderella. There was just something so romantic and whimsical about the romance between Olivia and Nico. From the way Nico came out of nowhere and swept Olivia right off her feet, to the way Nico was just so gentle and soft around Livvy, and finally, the way you could feel the contentment and love just existing between Olivia and Nico. Their romance was palpable, and their love felt so real and genuine.
❝Tesoro, the last thing you could ever be is a horrible person. You're sweetness and goodness rolled up in perfection.❞ He heard a small snort.
❝Nobody's perfect.❞
❝Maybe so, but you're perfect for me.❞
In addition, one of my favorite things about Olivia and Nico as a couple was just how rock solid they were. I never once doubted their love for one another. I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that Nico would always be there for Liv, and Olivia would always be there. If ever there was a ride or die couple, it would be Nico and Livvy. Moreover, I loved how author SARAH CURTIS really showed the love Nico had for Olivia, and visa versa.
❝Make no mistake that you are mine, tesoro. Will always be mine. And God help the person who ever tries to take you away from me because I'll never let you go.❞
❝I'll be yours for as long as you want me, Nico.❞
God, he loved it when she said his name. ❝That will be forever, tesoro.❞

Oh and I must note that every time he called her ❝Tesoro❞ I melted into a tiny puddle of feels. I don't know what it is, but I just love when a hero calls the heroine a nickname in another language. . . yeah, i'm a basic b like that. ANYWHO, the romance in BAD BEAT was top notch, and TBH it's what kept me reading. I was just so enamored with Olivia and Nico that I had to keep reading. Idk, I think I need some romance in my life, and BAD BEAT delivered.

Another review, another bout of awkwardness. . . *sighs* i guess it's par for the course at this point. Basically, I just got done explaining why I liked Nico and Olivia, and now I'm going to have to explain why I didn't like them. Or, maybe dislike is to strong, I think ambivalent works better. Yeah, I was pretty ambivalent towards Nico and Olivia for a good chunk of BAD BEAT. I think it's because there was literally no conflict between them. Seriously, they were that couple. They were so in love that even their arguments just devolved into sex and love inspired affirmations.
Also, as I mentioned, Nico and Olivia separately were just. . .boring. They were very bland when they weren't together and I think as a couple they were a lot more interesting. Essentially, my emotions towards Nico & Olivia really depended on the chapter. Some chapters I was whole heartedly invested. Other chapters? LOL. I was bored out of my damn mind. Like I said, this book was a weird one.
✿ ᴛʜᴇ ~ ᴍᴀғɪᴀ sʜɪᴛ ✿

You guys, I think it's time for me to officially admit that I just don't like, what I've lovingly dubbed, "mafia-shit." I just don't. Rarely has mafia-shit ever worked for me *cough* the Made series will always be an exception *cough*. More often than not, it just feels very tacked on, or, I get annoyed by it because I want to get back to the romance. In the case of BAD BEAT it was the former.
The mafia aspect of this book was. . .weird. Idk, there was no sense of urgency, and Nico never really felt like a mobster. TBH, I'm still not even sure what his job was. Like, I know he wasn't the head honcho - his father was - soooo, did that make him second in command? Or, was he just a random enforcer? IDK, and TBH, I don't really care. Moreover, SARAH CURTIS decided to leave any and all "mafia-shenanigans" until the very end of the book. Seriously, Olivia gets kidnapped at around 90% of the book.
Hoo-fucking-ray. I'm so glad all of this is happening now at the end of the book. So, freaking, glad. Conversely, when I looked at the summaries for book 1 and book 3 I couldn't find any mention of mafia-intrigue. Thus, it begs the question, why was Nico randomly in the mafia in the first place? I guess we may never know (or i should've read book 1. . .)

sɪᴅᴇ ɴᴏᴛᴇ ▸//▸ in addition to wrapping up my last thoughts i'm also going to mention some things that i liked, but didn't include in the "official" part of the review.
If there's one thing I want you to walk away from this review with, it's this; BAD BEAT was one of the most romantic books I have read in 2021. Seriously, BAD BEAT was that romantic. Olivia and Nico, while as plain as white bread, also had the cutest flirt-banter, as well as, the most romantic dynamic I have read about in a while. In addition, BAD BEAT also spends the last 1/3 of the book preparing and focusing on Olivia's . I personally loved the way it was introduced into the story and it lead to some amazing moments between Nico and Olivia.

He chuckled. ❝Close your mouth, tesoro. I said, okay. We'll do it your way.❞ He pulled into the parking spot and turned off the car before turning in his seat to look at her.
She still looked a little shocked but then her eyes warmed and that smile he loved so much turned up her lips. ❝Thank you.❞
And fuck him if he wouldn't do anything for her if it meant he got soft smiles and sweet thank yous.*sniffles* so. damn. single. ✨🥲
Ultimately, if you're looking for a romantic as fuck, Cinderella type, mafia-having, accidental fairytale centered book, then I highly suggest you try BAD BEAT.

I absolutely loved this book! Sarah Curtis knows how to do strong possessive alpha heroes and her latest book Bad Beat has one of the best alphas I’ve read.
In the process of following a lead to someone who is doing business in his family’s territory, Nico finds Olivia. She has had a different kind of upbringing and is in the wrong place at the right time. Nico decides she fits into his plan to hold those who injured his friend’s woman accountable. He has no intention of becoming involved with her. She is a pawn, that’s all.
Olivia just wants to help her mother in any way that is necessary. The price of doing so is not a consideration. When Nico assures her he will keep her and her mother safe, she gives in.
This wonderful book takes you through so many steps of this couple’s relationship as it grows. It’s not something you get a chance to experience often and it was refreshing and unique. I really loved reading how they grew together and eventually were able to embrace the L word.
This is a fast paced read with some incredible secondary characters that I’d love to read more about. Sprinkled with just the right amount of humor, plenty of scenes that will make you smile, oh so much steamy goodness and even some suspense.
It doesn’t get any better than this!

2nd read and still love it just as much as the first time. I read a book that was very disappointing and needed a good read so picked this one back up and it is so apart of my re-read list! I love the dogs names and I love the idea of bed picnics.
Nico Conti was helping his friend Alec with some trouble that his woman's brother brought to her door. In cleaning up the mess he finds out someone is infiltrating on his territory and goes to confront and warn them. While at the office of the man he finds is behind everything he sees Olivia and is taken by her beauty then takes her as collateral.
Olivia is confused when she is taken by the handsome powerful man but needs to get back home to take care of her sick mother. She tries to escape but when she fails she makes a deal with Nico to get help for her mom. Nico agrees in exchange for time with her and she agrees since she does find him attractive. When the man that had been helping her wants her back, Nico will not give her up and marries her but will love develop between them after getting married and will she her being married kept her safe.
I have to say this is probably my new favorite by this author. It even surpasses her 1st book for me which I loved. I loved both characters and enjoyed the time they spent together as they got to know each other. I loved the epilogue. I just loved it. This just really worked for me. I also liked that his mafia business didn't take over the romance or try to be uber gritty either. So big thumbs up for me.

Nico is one hot hero. Sarah Curtis writes some of my favorite heroes. She is one of my go to authors when I need a protective, bossy alpha fix and Nico didn't disappoint. I liked Olivia as well. I prefer sweet heroines and she is definitely that. They have so much chemistry and it is definitely a hot read. Highly recommend Bad Beat if you are looking for a sizzling low angst romance.

What I loved...
Nico! I mean his name alone is freaking sexy but throw in his hard stare and sweet words or when he speaks Italian and I'm done for. He was hard and kinda brutal(in a good way) and oh so sweet to his woman. I loved that even though they met in an odd way it didn't take away from what they built.
I loved the story line. And I'm a sucker for any book with some mafia goodness.
One word...Brussels sprouts...pretty sure I spit water all over the place with that line!
After starting and finishing so many books lately this one was refreshing. It didn't feel predictable and had something that just felt new for me. Some stuff I didn't see coming and I loved that

This is a really solid, low-key mafia romance. Not too much angst or drama compared to the mafia queen Cora Reilly. Barely any gore, but honestly, because there wasn’t much, the stuff that was there seemed misplaced. One of the best handlings of OW drama I have seen, very satisfying. The romance between the main characters was splendid, quite realistic and cute, not too fast paced, not too slow.
Olivia (22) was a very sweet heroine who loved her mom and seemed actually realistic for a captured person. I hate when authors can’t do that right.
Nico (~32) was a bit boring. There were pockets where I really liked the description, but sometimes it felt lacking. I hated the picture of “him” on the cover of one of the versions, he has some pedophile vibes to me. The version I am using for this post though is fine.
This is stupid but I had a real issue with Olivia saying that Nico’s pool is bigger than any of the pools she ever swam in on the Las Vegas strip. Having been there, if this is true, he is wasting A TON of water.
Overall, really good mafia book.

Nico Conti, the hero, knew the life he was signing up for when he followed his mafioso father’s footsteps and became a Capo with assigned soldiers to keep his family’s legacy marching forward. Yeah, he’s not the Don yet, but Nico is not to be messed with, folks. Not unless you have a crazy desire to go swimming with the fishes or have an unhealthy fascination with knives. Capiche? Family friend or foe, he’ll come after you in a heartbeat if you mess with what is his.
Lucky for us, despite his self-proclaimed heart of darkness, Nico still has a softer side still lingering and Olivia, the heroine, brings that out into the light. Though he’s convinced there is no goodness left in his soul, we got a glimpse that wasn’t necessarily the case with his cameo appearance near the end of book 1, All-In. It was definitely confirmed in book 2. But brace yourself, he’s still a mobster through and through.
As an avid mafia romance book reviewer, I’ve come across countless made men in my romantic reads. For me, it can be a delicate balance for an author to present a formidable OTT bad boy that gets the famiglia business done, yet has enough redeeming qualities to make me actually like him. Sarah Curtis certainly pulled it off here. I grew to like Nico after I got to know him.
A big false first impression/misconception lead to this main couple’s first intimate encounter to be uncomfortably painful and awkward. I'll be honest here. I struggled with how that scene went down. Lust, not love, was the only thing Nico felt at that point. Nico is soon knocked clear off his feet by his unexpected feelings for Olivia and his desire to protect her. Yeah, it was after that “no turning back now” moment I realized, after I got over how it played out and felt he was remorseful, I decided to give this guy a second chance.
As the innocent babe in the brothel, we learn Livy lived in a very secluded environment and was about to be handed over to an unwelcome set of circumstances. Good news is Nico beat the bad guy to the punch and saved her, at the same time unknowingly saving himself in the process. Not such a bad hand to be dealt with, is it, my fellow mafia romance book-loving friends? His gamble taking Olivia paid off in a very big way. He got the love of his life he never knew he needed.

Lucky for us, despite his self-proclaimed heart of darkness, Nico still has a softer side still lingering and Olivia, the heroine, brings that out into the light. Though he’s convinced there is no goodness left in his soul, we got a glimpse that wasn’t necessarily the case with his cameo appearance near the end of book 1, All-In. It was definitely confirmed in book 2. But brace yourself, he’s still a mobster through and through.
As an avid mafia romance book reviewer, I’ve come across countless made men in my romantic reads. For me, it can be a delicate balance for an author to present a formidable OTT bad boy that gets the famiglia business done, yet has enough redeeming qualities to make me actually like him. Sarah Curtis certainly pulled it off here. I grew to like Nico after I got to know him.
A big false first impression/misconception lead to this main couple’s first intimate encounter to be uncomfortably painful and awkward. I'll be honest here. I struggled with how that scene went down. Lust, not love, was the only thing Nico felt at that point. Nico is soon knocked clear off his feet by his unexpected feelings for Olivia and his desire to protect her. Yeah, it was after that “no turning back now” moment I realized, after I got over how it played out and felt he was remorseful, I decided to give this guy a second chance.
As the innocent babe in the brothel, we learn Livy lived in a very secluded environment and was about to be handed over to an unwelcome set of circumstances. Good news is Nico beat the bad guy to the punch and saved her, at the same time unknowingly saving himself in the process. Not such a bad hand to be dealt with, is it, my fellow mafia romance book-loving friends? His gamble taking Olivia paid off in a very big way. He got the love of his life he never knew he needed.

This author has fast become a favorite of mine. I haven't read a story by Sarah Curtis that I haven't loved yet. Ever since reading All In, I have been waiting for Nico's story. I was so intrigued by him and what happened between him and Alec that caused their falling out. We know that Nico has mob ties and he is very unapologetic about the path he chose. And even though he and Alec had a falling out, he doesn't hesitate to be there for Alec and River when they needed him most.
So Bad Beat begins where All In ended and we get to see what Nico does after that to protect Alec and River. This is how he meets Olivia. Olivia has grown up in a world that most of us have only ever read about. Her upbringing and choices that she had to make are the reasons that she even crosses paths with Nico.
I have to say when the book began, I was worried that I may not like Nico as much as I first thought. But then as I was reading, I realized that I knew what Nico didn't lol. I'm a huge fan of Sarah Curtis's books.
She writes books that I know I'm going to love for many reasons, but the two major ones are:
1) she writes THE BEST alpha males;
2) her books are always safe! No cheating ever!
Nico is hot...just look at the cover!! And I loved our h, Olivia. They had great chemistry even though they started out not really liking each other. It's got a bit of suspense to it which I really enjoyed. And the Italian phrases that were used I especially liked...being half Italian, that was a nice touch.
We also got to see what Alec and River are up to. Now that put a huge smile on my face!
Another great read by Ms. Curtis!

This was like Pretty Woman, mafia-style!
I thought Sarah Curtis outdid herself with the first of The Gamblers series,
, because, come on, Alec and River were awesome. Nico, though, Nico caught my attention right away. I was bugging Sarah for his book before I finished Alec's!! lol Gotta love them bad boys.
And make no mistake, Nico is BAD. His choice to join the family business cost him his best friend and any chance at a good woman. Or so he thought.
When he makes a snap decision to kidnap beautiful Olivia and hold her as collateral in a looming turf war, Nico has no intention of letting her get under his skin. But when the itch gets too strong, Nico decides to handle it—with a business proposition.
Nico's deal isn't one Olivia ever saw herself accepting, but circumstances leave her with no choice. She doesn't expect keeping him out of her heart to be the hardest part of their arrangement.
There was a lot of twists and turns here, but I'll let you experience those for yourself. (It's more fun that way!!)
FYI, some OW drama occurs. (mild)
I loved these two together. I ADORED Olivia's escape attempt(OMFG!! I laughed so hard!) but Nico himself was the big draw here. Definitely my favorite Sarah Curtis MC to date!
This is one delicious swoon-worthy, panty-melting, tear-jerking, breath-stealing book!!!

Originally read and loved on December 6 2017,reread and still loved on March 23 2018. Reread again on September 28th-29th 2018 and loved even more!!
This book is like winning an all expenses paid vacation to the Caribbean after you've been living in the Arctic for 50 years 😂😂😂 In pnther words all my hopes and dreams for a mmc delivered by one sexy,badass, possessive Alpha hero.....Nico was everything I hope for in a bbf. I loved that he was so hard with everyone else but he became a sweetheart with Olivia. Before anything had even happened between them he was captivated which is evidenced by him cancelling a hook-up because he can't stop thinking about her! 💃
Olivia is the sweet virgin heroine who was raised in unusual circumstances yet managed to maintain her innocence. Though she was shy I never felt she was a doormat and I adored her.
This book had all my favourite tropes rolled into one little ebook and as shown from the number of rereads quickly became a favorite of mine.

Even though I like things action packed and edgy when I’m in the mood for alpha sweet, Sarah Curtis is one of the authors I turn to. She consistently gives me funny and sexy reads when I need a break from my darker reads. With Bad Beat I got the super sweet heroine I expected but Ms. Curtis also gave me an actual anti-hero and some grit. What an awesome surprise that was!
Olivia is the daughter of a prostitute who was surprisingly sheltered from that by a mother who wanted so much more for her daughter. Olivia’s mother’s illness puts her in a tough spot where all that sheltering may go out the window. Olivia was loyal, strong and smart but also super sweet. She was also in way over her head with everything happening around her especially when she went out of the frying pan and straight into the fire.
Nico is the son of a mob boss and a high ranking capo in the organization. When he lays eyes on Olivia all bets are off, he wants her so he takes her. Sure it was for collateral against a competitor but that was just an excuse really. Nico was alpha to his core, domineering, in charge in all things, and made no apologies or excuses for who and what he was. Needless to say, I adored everything about him. He saw what he wanted and went after it. When he figured out what a gem he had he then went about making sure he could keep her even if it meant war with a man who was almost as scary as Nico and who considered Olivia his property.
As much as I enjoyed the story, it did get a tad bogged down in the middle. An action scene sprinkled in amongst all the dinners and wooing would have been appreciated. Even so, between the action and that touch of darkness and grit to go along with all the sweet, this is now my favorite Sarah Curtis book.

so i had originally DNF'd this book after the H calls a booty call over after meeting the h and bringing her back to his place. it didn't matter that he immediately cancelled it - the thought/action was still out there.
but after seeing how many of my goodreads friends loved this book and also reading the other 2 books in this series and loving the committed/obsessed H's i gave it a second shot.
besides that booty call thing the rest of the book was actually quite nice! i'm a sucker for the "hates everyone but her" trope and nico was so good at that. he was utterly obsessed and would do anything for olivia's happiness.
it wasn't a perfect 5-star read though:
- i hate reading about virgin heroine's paired with H's who have tons of experience. i wish olivia was experienced but i guess she was made to be a virgin since her mother was a prostitute. had to balance that out huh? lol
- i wished we had more bond building between H/h where they shared past experiences, thoughts, feelings. their relationship didn't feel that deep and i barely know anything about nico besides his day to day life.

This is really a 3.5, but I liked it enough to bump it up to 4 stars.
I really didn't like the beginning of this book. I felt that the couple's first time was in poor taste, and I dont feel that the author portrayed Carmine in a severe light until later in the book which made things confusing for me at first. I actually almost DNF'd this book.
It wasn't until about 40ish% that I finally started to really enjoy the book. I loved how the H was flawed, but tried to make up for it as much as possible. The reader could plainly read how much he cared for the heroine. It was really the last half that saved this book. I didn't read the first book, but I don't think that took away from this one.
All in all, it ended up being an enjoyable read... just a flawed one for me.

I liked this book a lot! I wanted to smack the hero a little and tell him to open his eyes already, but actually found myself really enjoying the slow burn. I LOVED how he would do pretty much anything for Olivia by the end, even totally non-badass things. So many times I found myself chuckling. A very enjoyable read, I'm looking forward to going back and reading the first in the series.

LOVED this story! It's done in classic Sarah Curtis style, with a caring alpha hero whom we get to watch fall in love and a sweet heroine who handles life's obstacles with grace and aplomb. It's everything I enjoy in a story and I highly recommend it!

OMG....Nico and Olivia......they were perfect!!!! I LOVED the storyline so so much:) The writing was great, the story flowed beautifully and sensually, the sexual chemistry was HOT, it was ALL perfect!!!!

I love Sarah Curtis books. She has a way of giving us Fairytales but in such a unique way. You know you going on a beautiful journey each time you read her book.
Bad Beat was no different this time. Bad Beat captured my attention from the Prologue. Nico caught my attention and really I can't tell you why but he did and boy was I so Damn thrilled he did.
This book gave me so many feels. At times it felt Beauty and the Beast and then Cinderella. It really was my kinda book just told in my kinda Naughty, Dirty and mysterious way.
Nico is definitely hard headed badass but boy does he fall hard. Before he even knows it Olivia is all he can see. From the moment they met even under such circumstances she was His.
I loved watching Olivia tame a Dragon.
I adored watching her being cherished and loved and spoiled and protected by who everyone thought was The Big Bad Wolf.
Nico would move through Heaven and Hell for Olivia in a blink of an eye. Man or Woman he would Stamp on you if you came after her. His Love for he was Awe inspiring.
I loved how he took care of her and her mom, never once treating her badly. He never hid behind hate or nasty words when he didn't understand what he was feeling for and that for me Was Hot, well also their sexy time would set you ablaze but this man's maturity and the way he dropped all walls for Olivia was So Beautiful to watch.
Grab this book babes. Because amongst the Badass and his battles with ppl trying to hurt what's his, you get an Astounding Love Story.

I had to read this book twice, why? Once for myself and once for the book itself. When your reading a book by one of your favorite authors, it's hard to be unbiased. So hince the reading twice.
On both counts, the author had pulled me into the story by the second page. Where on the first reading, I kept waiting for the trouble to begin, as in her other books, it didn't come about in the way I was expecting. Was I disappointed? No, not in the least. I was captivated in the lives of these 2 people. On reading the book again, I was there for the book itself and not myself or the author. The story took on a new meaning. The story of 2 people, both excited and scared of what they were feeling. Never doubting each other, knowing that they are both happy in what they have, but not believing in what they saw in each other. As the book progresses the sweetness of Olivia and the brash harshness of Nico balance each other beautifully. As Nico delivers, Olivia excepts all that is theirs. This is a book to read and enjoy. With just a hint of trouble and a lot of love.
