It's early December and Andy Skyberg is itching to blow town for a weekend of holiday cheer with old friends—including a date with an attractive divorcée who thinks he's hot. But first, Aunt Bev needs a teensy bit of help. She’s managing the Girls’ Weekend Out event at the Beaver Tail Resort and could use some extra muscle. Andy figures he can spare a few hours before hitting the road. Mother Nature, though, has other plans. A giant blizzard makes an unexpected turn. Andy and his pooch King Harald find themselves snowbound—in a hotel full of hard-partying women, stranded travelers, a hockey team, a man-eating novelist, a belligerent blogger, and one violent, devious jewel thief. Before you know it, man and mutt are up to their noses in another case. It’s a winter wonderland of fast-paced fun and merry madness, as the sleuthing duo dig out from King Harald’s Snow Job.
Richard Audry is the pen name of D. R. Martin. As Richard Audry, he is the author of the the King Harald Canine Cozy mystery series and the Mary MacDougall Historical mystery series. Under his own name he has written the Johnny Graphic middle-grade ghost adventure series, the Marta Hjelm mystery, Smoking Ruin, and two books of literary commentary: Travis McGee & Me; and Four Science Fiction Masters.
King Harald is a very special canine, “part Chesapeake and part moose”. He stole my heart in the first book, The Karma of King Harald, and still holds his place two books later. In King Harald’s Snow Job. Andy and King Harald have a plan for their weekend that is blown away by a huge blizzard leaving them stuck at the Beaver Tail Resort. They are joined by a bunch of women at the resort for a Girls’ Out Weekend, an author debuting her new book, a crazy fan of the author, a hockey team, many stranded travelers, and a jewel THIEF! Unbeknownst to Andy, King Harald will play a key role in the return of the jewel. Maybe just in time for Andy to save just a little bit of his weekend plans.
Here is Wisconsin we know all about snow and blizzards that drop several unexpected inches so I can sympathize with Andy. At least her wasn’t trapped alone and the resort had plenty of food and drink available. Except his was pulled right into the investigation, something he had hoped to avoid.
Richard Audry has plowed Andy right into the middle of everything happening and takes us along for a delightful ride in mostly organized chaos. Andy arrives to help his Aunt Bev for just a few hours and he watches the snow just keep coming down. Of course, Harald loves the snow and does all he can when let outside to run and frolic and even take off on his merry way leaving Andy to venture out in the cold himself. Funny how dogs get their way leaving their persons behind. The author does fill the story with quite of bit of humor, some of it comes from getting Harald’s own point of view on several situations. Some are laugh out loud funny and also have me wondering just what my own dogs are thinking sometimes around here.
The good thing about investigating the jewel theft is that it is pretty safe to assume the culprit is trapped in the hotel like everyone else. The bad thing is that the theyr could be absolutely anyone trapped in the hotel. Several twists reveal things that start to eliminate suspects but the climatic reveal took me by surprise. Mr. Audry does an excellent job of snowing us readers and diverting our attention elsewhere until the end.
The characters that join Andy in this story are all unique and so well written. I could see each and every one clearly in my mind. The resort and the weather were aptly described too forming very clear visualizations. Again, I am very familiar with the weather, but I found myself reaching for a blanket soon after beginning this story and it really wasn’t chilly outside. 🙂
Mr. Audry is a wonderful storyteller. You will quickly find yourself immersed in this book and will have a difficult time putting in down. With winter coming fast this would be a fun book to read curled up by the fire. Mystery, comedy, great characters, all in a setting full of snow, do add up to a perfect escape and one I highly recommend!
This is my first time reading a book from this series. I enjoy cozy mysteries and anything with four legged companions is always a big plus for me.
It starts out innocent enough. Andy has big plans with his buddies for the weekend but first he needs to stop in at the Beaver Tail Resort to help his Aunt Bev. It’s the big event for Girls’ Weekend Out and she could use the extra hand.
You know what they say about best laid plans. Andy’s goes out the window when a sudden snow storm leaves him stranded in a hotel full of women, one of the few other males present being his dog, King Harald.
Events take a bizarre twist when someone is attacked and a valuable piece of jewelry is stolen. It’s time for King Harald to start poking his sleuthing snout into some snow drifts and for Andy to dust off his own crime solving abilities to flush out the thief before someone really gets hurt.
This is the third book in the series so I’m starting out clueless. The author filled me in enough on past events to clear up most of my confusion and I settled in for a fun mystery.
I was slow to solve the mystery as the crime didn’t happen until almost the halfway point of the story. Don’t let that deter you. Getting to know the character’s and touring the resort was a lot of fun.
One of those fun character’s is King Harald. He’s a dog’s dog, full of mischief and an almost accidental talent for solving crimes. His ‘owner’ Andy has his hands full following his clues. He’s a dog after all. It’s not like he can tell Andy what he’s discovered.
Lots of fun, a twisted mystery, and some delicious food and beverages left me hungry and thirsty for more of this cozy series. I raise my glass of Biberschwanzes to an adventure best served cold.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
Just the cover would have got me! But this cozy canine mystery gives the reader much more than a 'welcoming' cover.
The book begins with King Harold as he wonders just what his owner Andy is doing with a the strange silvery thing. His phone. I enjoyed the perspective of King Harold. A different dynamic for me that worked. King Harold refers to Andy his master as 'the boss'.
'The Boss' aka Andy is the interim mayor having been elected into the job in a previous installment in this series. Although I sure do want to see what I've missed Snow Job is a totally stand alone part of the series.
The story begins with Andy planning a weekend of 'guy time' that is interrupted when his Aunt Bev calls and asks for his help for the day. Saying 'no' to Aunt Bev isn't an option so Andy and King Harold go to the resort just out of town to help Bev set up for the weekend.
Since Aunt Bev is newly on the job Andy is ready to help her with the big events for the weekend. But as he jumps into his helper position he soon realizes that Bev's boss isn't too into his new event coordinator. So as a good nephew Andy decides to keeps Aunt Bev's back.
As much as Andy needs to get away to do the 'guy thing' he is stuck helping Aunt Bev and literally stuck because of a snow storm.
And then a priceless art object is stolen and Andy is recruited to investigate so word isn't leaked out about the theft.
Snow Job is a fun story that will keep you interested to the end.
The characters are fun and endearing. I loved Andy, Aunt Bev, and the minor characters the novelist who is hosting a book promo. and then there is the nurse who Andy is a little smitten with. The jeweler who is assaulted when the one of a kind necklace is stolen and the young new part-time security office who has to play detective to find out who did it.
Overall the author Richard Audry, Andy and King Harald provided this reader with a warm and cozy and clean read.
Any age reader would enjoy King Harald's Snow Job.
I received a complimentary copy from Great Escapes Tours.
King Harald is a big, ginger mutt. Sorry I am not quite sure what type of dog, but he is very sweet and fun. He really cares for his master, Andy, but isn’t beyond slipping away on occasion. Andy is a 40-year-old artist and temporary mayor of his small town. He is divorced and looking to spend the weekend with his guy friends and then a dinner and concert date with a nice woman who is also divorced.
Andy’s Aunt Bev calls him in to help her at an event she is overseeing at a nearby resort. Harald is uncomfortable leaving home but can’t communicate his reluctance to Andy. Andy is willing to pitch in to help not realizing that they will get snowed in and have to deal with a jewel theft.
There is plenty of animosity towards the theft victim, a popular author, as she is not a very sympathetic character. Andy adds several suspects to his list, but he seems to be barking up the wrong tree. Harald doesn’t exactly do any great sleuthing -- except to track down another dog when directed to -- but he manages to get involved in the heist by accident.
I liked the many different suspects who had been treated poorly by the author as she pushed herself to fame. I expected more sleuthing by Harald but still enjoyed his parts in the story. It sounded like he might have been more involved in the first two books. As a third in the series, this book still read fine as a standalone.
This is light, fun and clean; easy reading that I found very enjoyable. The story is told in third person mostly from Andy’s viewpoint but sometimes from Harald’s which is fun. They have a nice, affectionate relationship. I appreciated that Andy is a gentleman who cares about the ladies beyond just male interest. This is a very nice light cozy mystery that would be good to curl up with on a cold, snowy day.
I received this book from the author for tour review.
The boss is planning a weekend away to catch up with friends, go to a concert, have good food and maybe even a new woman to date at the end of it. And, I get to go, so thinks the affable, King Harold. 'The Boss' is Andy (Anders) Skyberg, almost reluctant Mayor of a New Bergen, is packing to leave as soon as he makes a stop to help his Aunt Bev with a Holiday Faire. What could go wrong?
Plenty. Firstly, the weekend has been coupled with 'The Girls Weekend Out' - a two night stay with lots of different activities planned. Secondly, Rosemary, the woman in charge of the faire, is recuperating after falling off her bike. This means, Aunt Bev is now responsible for managing the whole event. And with Tim, the smarmy hotel manager, keen to see her fail, Anders insists on making sure it all goes well for his beloved aunt.
With popular novelist, Logan Kennedy arriving to add to the festivities, it should make for a fun weekend for all. And then a blizzard blows in to town and it's now open season for mayhem. All manner of secrets are discovered on the snowy weekend - suggested affairs, odd tattoos and missing jewelry. And with King Harald sniffing out (and hiding) a key piece of evidence, what should have been a straightforward helping hand, turns into a complicated mystery for man and his best friend.
I love King Harald. He's amiable, inquisitive and a genius in his own right. What I particularly like about this great series is that Audry doesn't humanize King Harald. What he thinks is what I would imagine a dog saying to himself. And that's why this works. Anders may well solve the mystery, but he has a lot of help from his faithful friend. A great story and highly recommended for fans of cozy mysteries.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author to review. The opinions expressed are my own and I am not required to give a positive critique.
KING HARALD'S SNOW JOB by Richard Audry The Third Canine Cozy
Andy Skyberg is looking forward to a weekend of fun with old pals and a new lady friend. But before he heads out for his weekend down in the Cities he agrees to help his Aunt Bev. She's managing a Girl's Weekend Out event and Holiday Faire at the Beaver Trail Resort and Andy will be there to make sure the vendors are happy and have everything they need. But King Harald has a bad feeling about all of this. Something bad is going to happen and Andy just won't listen to him! But what could go wrong helping for a few hours on a cold December day?
I always enjoy hanging out with Andy Skyberg and I love King Harald. The two make a great duo, never wanting to get involved, but always landing in the midst of a crime. Yet, without really trying...and definitely not knowing what they're doing (in regard to criminal behavior at any rate) they always figure things out! In KING HARALD'S SNOW JOB a blizzard, as well as his own moral compass, force Andy to take a more active role in investigating the crime, in this case assault and theft.
Unique characters and a definite sense of place are the foundations of this story, combining to make it feel like home, regardless of where your home truly is. My favorite part of the Canine Cozy mysteries is when the story is told from Harald's perspective. We get a glimpse into the canine mind and get Harald's take on things without humanizing him.
The December snow, the holiday shopping, and the laid back demeanor of Anders and Harold make this the perfect book to cozy up with!
