I made it about halfway through this study guide before I had to give it up. The use of cherry-picked Bible passages, divorced from their context, seems to make arguments that a more thoughtful and complete reading of Scripture would not support. Citing Romans 12:9, without incorporating 10-13, strips the nuance out of Paul's exhortation and makes a hollower statement that intolerant churches could use to countenance hate. Guess I will keep looking.
There are three major themes in the The Great Divorce: Humans choose heaven or hell, God is the only real thing in the universe, and the further away you are from him the less substance you have, and that time is relative only to mortals, to God it is nothing. I felt the author spent too much time looking at the individual ghosts vices and why they are sins and too little on Lewis' main themes. What was really lacking was any kind of clear explanation on how these primary concerns tie back to the bible, how they are relevant to the way a believer lives, and how they impact our views on God. It was useful to have some questions to go through but the focus of these queries left something to be desired.
Excellent study guide for The Great Divorce to help understand C.S. Lewis' message. My sister and I used it while reading this book together, and especially appreciated the Scripture references in each chapter to reinforce God's Word throughout the story. Highly recommend! We plan on using Alan Vermilye's other guides in his CS Lewis Study Series. !
This study guide is a must for those persons who enjoy reading C.S. Lewis. His writing is much deeper than the casual reader observes. This book opens the depths to a greater awareness.
A competent guide to understanding the themes and characters of C. S. Lewis' imaginative journey through heaven and hell. If you like The Great Divorce, you will like this book which will provide further insight and understanding.
This book was a huge help to me in understanding the characters, the excuses we use, the hell we choose to carry, the ways we can carry heaven, etc. it completely opened the book up for me. Highly recommend.
I think most others would find this study guide very helpful. I did not. The character summaries were excellent. The discussion questions were good. I still didn’t understand the damn book though. I read the whole book first. I saw a fabulous actor who performed the whole book. I did the first half of this study guide and I still don’t understand the book. There is access to an online answer book when you buy the workbook. Still not enough for me to understand or enjoy. I don’t think it’s fair for my lack of comprehension to color my review, but it does. Like I said most people would enjoy this study guide, but I just don’t get it.
