Wall Street Journal & USA Today bestselling author Emma Slate writes romance with heart and heat.
Called “the dialogue queen” by her college playwriting professor, Emma writes love stories that range from romance-for-your-pants to action-flicks-for-chicks.
When she isn’t writing, she’s usually curled up under a heating blanket with a steamy romance novel and her two beagles—unless her outdoorsy husband can convince her to go on a hike.
Normally, I love dark stories. Captivity themes are among my favorites. So, when I saw this short-story featuring all of the above, I was sure that it'd be a hit with me. Well...not so much.
Sadly, this novella fell short for many reasons. I never felt a strong connection with the main characters. Things were also way too convenient and unrealistic for me. You know it will be fast-paced at just over 100 pages, but maybe having a lapse in time written in would make it feel a little more believable. Something like "...Six months later..." would help provide a more feasible timeline.
Instead, this novella delivers a huge serving of insta-love. Poor "little Wren" is kidnapped today and fawning all over her drug lord captor within days. Give me a break! Insta-love in a dark captivity-themed story just doesn't work for me--like ever.
It is the slow evolution of the feelings between the captor and captive that draw me in every time. That is what holds my rapt attention and stirs up all those pesky emotions that make a reading experience memorable. Unfortunately, that was missing in this quickie novella.
On the upside, it was an incredibly quick read. It was also offered as a Kindle Unlimited selection, so I didn't lose any money here. If you're looking for a fast-paced, smutty captivity story that lacks character development and emotional depth, then this might just be what you're looking for. No judgment here--sometimes I look for something similar when the mood strikes me. Unfortunately, this wasn't one of those times. I was left disappointed.
This was pretty good. For a captive/captor romance it did feel like it was missing something. Maybe it suffered from being a novella, but I still found the story enjoyable. The banter was good, and they story flowed well even though it was quick.
Had this been a full length I think it could have been a five or even better TBH. If you like romance with dark themes, then I would check this out!
This was a short story but a story that held me captive! Known only as little Wren, she finds herself in a strange place with no memory of how she got there. A woman named Maria is to prepare her for tonight, but the little wren doesn't know what for. She is to be sold to the highest bidder but leaves the room before she hears what she sold for. Alejandro Vega is her captor, he has a score to settle with her father, a US Senator. She is displayed before the men there to buy her, then she leaves and later Vega goes to her room and it looks like he is attracted to her There are many mysteries surrounding Alejandro and little wren aka Portia, but everything is revealed slowly as the relationship developes between captor and captive. There is also the dangerous end deadly Sicario to watch for as he guards Vega, but has eyes for the little wren. I did end up enjoying the book but I wasn't fond of the pace and the unanswered questions that were there throughout the story. That could be just me and my choices when reading, it was an enjoyable story and we do get answers to all the questions in the end.
Very much enjoyed reading this book. It’s dark , steamy, unpredictable and passionate. The characters are wonderful, they are so diverse and yet still jell together perfectly. I adored the interview bonus too , very different and unusual.
I think this is one of those stories that actually suffered from being so short. I really liked the flow between characters, and her personality and willingness to do anything was great, but the instalove was a bit much for me, considering the serious issues this touches on. I would have liked more development between the two of them, so that their relationship and her falling for him was more believable. Otherwise we've got a girl who tossed her moral compass aside for lust. I mean...what happened to that other girl who was in the cell with her? Because she's out she doesn't care? I really enjoyed the plot, hence the three stars, and this was short enough that it was a really quick read so it was still worth my time even with the underdeveloped character connection. If that sort of instalove in a crazy setting doesn't bother you, you'll really enjoy this. Personally, I would have liked a little more fight in her towards him and think if this was even just 50 pages longer it would have helped with that.
when I first started reading this book I didn't think i was going to be able to get into it but I was so wrong. Within a few chapters, my interest was piqued. This book follows a young woman who is called Little wren by Alesander. He has had her kidnapped and sold to the highest bidder. I wouldn't have thought I would like the hero as he was very much an anti-hero. He was thoroughly embroiled in the criminal world and never apologised for being so. he had qualities that I didn't like at first or maybe I should say behaviour that was disgusting but later explained. Her name is Portia which we discover at the end of the book. There are lots of twists and turns that arose and information was learnt which perhaps made Alesander appear more human. Reasons for things happening was explained well. I would like to.read more about Alesander and Portia.

I liked it! I was a little unsure in the first couple chapters - I felt a little lost and disconnected from both the characters and the story - but once I was a few chapters in I was captive - Our hero is full of secrets and surrounded in subterfuge - our heroine had spirit and was not wearing rose colored glasses - it is what it is and sometimes in a dark romance I like that This is a short read and I honestly feel that if Slate had taken it to full novel length - with all the details that leave us truly loving or hating our characters this would be a five-star book I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy of this book.
My first by author and I rarely give novellas anything higher than a three because they’re not fleshed out. This one had a slightly different issue. Maria keeps telling little wren not to look him in the eye but I feel Alejandro is not the man she is warned about. The connection between the two is not Stockholm so not sure where it develops unless little Wren is that easy from being fingered. Also Alejandro is married so that makes it quite taboo when Wren falls for a sex trafficker.
I got this book in exchange for a review.Little Wren is now here name. Captive of a Mexican drug cartel. Her father's mistake, she will pay for with her body, while as a U.S. Senator, he is safe in the States. Will she fall under the Stockholm Syndrome ? Will she ever be free again ? Thisbook is well written about a young woman held captive. Will she rise from the ashes a phoenix ? The reade won't put the book down until it's over, a good ending.
I just didn't connect with this one--even though it's one of my favorite themes sure to be a hit with me. Basically, Mexican drug lord has shady senator's daughter kidnapped in revenge and it's insta-love between the two. Moreover, it's billed as dark but only the theme is dark and the rest isn't. A dark novel/la is where you the reader feel some of the fear and angst of the protagonist or main character. Since there was insta-love, there was none of that. Just wasn't believable.
Good book but not sure I would have turned to lust so soon after being kidnapped. Maybe after she learnt who her father was and what he had done might she have changed and fallen for him, still enjoyed it but thought more would have happened to her father for what he did. I do enjoy this authors books and I was actually expecting some sort of link to Flynn & Co but it didn’t happen in this book.
This is a captive and captor romance story. The story was enjoyable but being a novella it was quite short. The characters were well written and had good banter between the. The story flowed really smoothly. This should really be made into a full length story. This is the perfect quick read for romance with a dark theme lovers.

I love Emma's books sins were great and I loved captive just the same her writing is something else and when I start one of her books I am in another world well done and never stop your amazing books
Starting out as a bit of a dark read,it quickly becomes a story of conflicting emotions between the leading characters, one of hate/love....and the question is which one will win. An enjoyable read, not too deep but still entertaining.
A quick, fast-paced and dark romance story with secrets, revenge, and insta-love. My only complaint about this book is that I wish it was a bit long and had more character development.

You're warned to be careful on a night out on the town- especially when far from home. Be aware of your surroundings. She wasn't. Things will never be the same again. This is a dark novella with a steamy even darker twist.
The story is about Mexican drug cartel paying off her fathers' debt with her body. She is the innocent bystander. It drove me crazy not knowing her name until the end.
Love this book but I can not locate it anywhere now I wanted to purchase it can anyone let me know where I can find it it’s not on amazon or Apple I cannot locate it anywhere I googled it as well
The story itself might have been short but it was just an intricate. The storyline flowed beautifully from one scene to the next. The ending was the story was pretty good but I still wanted more. I mean more in terms of sub characters. Sicario was good sub character, which the reader should know is up to no good from the beginning. The book isn't a solid five but it kept me reading. I wanted to know the end result of Portia and Alejandro.
