This is part of a series and picks up right where we left off in the previous book. In this one, Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship has suffered a setback. Anakin also feels responsible for the tragic event that happened in the last book. Obi-Wan isn't exactly sure how to console his padawan.

This is another decent offering from this series that has a connection to the Jedi Apprentice series. The mission isn't anything special and that could be said about most of the books in this series. It is about the characters and I am enjoying the insight to the relationship between master and padawan as well as the insight to each character. There were a couple of really nice scenes in this book that made it worth the read. We finally get that scene of the gundark nest that Anakin and Obi-Wan talk about in Attack of the Clones. Also, the conversation at the end between these two characters is really gut wrenching as Anakin is succumbing to the pressure of being the "Chosen One".

If you are looking for the exploration of the relationship between Obi-Wan and Anakin, this series is for you. This book as well as the series does a nice job of filling in the gap that was left out of the movies.

Another great Star Wars novel from Jude Watson. I know I've said that about her other books, but I have more to say than just that:

The nest of gundarks! "You fell into that nightmare, Master, and I rescued you, remember?" I loved the, um, reference to the reference? Fulfillment of the reference?

Anakin and Obi-Wan are still dealing with the aftermath of the mission to Andara and Yaddle's recent death. They're struggling with blame and guilt and a damaged relationship. This wasn't my favorite of the series, the mission itself felt kind of disjointed, but I loved the section where Anakin was in the Zone of Self-Containment. Well, loved isn't exactly the right word. It was significant to me. Because of A Wrinkle in Time, The Giver, and the book I'm writing myself right now. The removal of emotions. The calm and serenity. The peace. But while it takes away the turmoil and the things that haunt, it takes away love. It takes away true happiness. It's easier, but is it worth it?

WE'RE REALLY IN IT NOW, LADS.

Jenna Zan Arbor is BACK, which is good, because otherwise I was beginning to worry that all scientists in the Star Wars universe are evil. That's still a possibility, since Granta Omega was a scientist too.

Anyway, she drugs Anakin with a drug that induces peaceful contentment. When it wears off, it makes him realize how much his emotions normally torment him. There's this point where he cries and begs Obi-Wan to take his power away from him. It made me SO sad.

Also, Obi-Wan falls into a nest of gundarks. Really makes you think, doesn't it.

Another fun Jedi Quest story!

As they are on a mission to save a group of freedom fighters from the clutches of their enemies and to stop a war from starting between two planets, Anakin has to face his fears, his destiny and his unnatural strength in the Force. Anakin's vulnerability is especially moving in this book and the reader really gets to see what he carries in his mind, and how troubled he is, even though he is only sixteen. Anakin and Obi-Wan's relationship - still rocky and difficult because of events of the previous books - and their loyalty to each other is tested, which was exciting to read about. I love these two as a duo so damn much, and stories that really focus on their relationship are always fun for me.

So, in short, The Moment of Truth was fun and entertaining, while also, occasionally, damn heart-breaking and super moving.

Some spoiler-y thoughts:

The Moment of Truth by Jude Watson - Seventh book in the Jedi Quest series

adventurous challenging hopeful inspiring mysterious reflective tense.

Fast-paced

Plot or character-driven? Character
Strong character development? Yes
Loveable characters? Yes
Diverse cast of characters? It's complicated
Flaws of characters a main focus? Yes

4.0 Stars

Again, another mission that doesn't go as planned. Whodathunk?

Poor Anakin Skywalker is taken prisioner, and mentally fights off the invasion of his mind...or was he able to fight it off? Hmmm?

Obi-Wan Kenobi is separated (again) from his padawan, but is able to get back to him. Was he too late?

Who did this thing to Ani?

This was fast paced and a enjoyable read.

Looking forward to reading the next one.

The hook in his heart seared him, and he knew its name. It was love.

The love he felt for his Master was lodged firmly within him. It was a connection that had grown from the first moment Obi-Wan had told him that he would take him and train him.

this book hurt me 😭

Yeah this is such a solid 3.5 stars but I’m gonna bump it down to 3.

The ending was resolved almost too quickly, the middle part with Anakin at the facility felt… I can’t even put a word on it?, and the talk with Anakin and Obi-Wan at the end just.. happened? It was an issue in this book and for multiple of the series, but is just kinda tossed under the carpet because Obi-Wan said he would help Anakin? That’s all? Forget that Anakin just lowkey poured his fears and thoughts to Obi-Wan. “But I will help you. I will always help you. I will not leave you.” Bro this could’ve been drawn out and woven much more effectively. “But it’s for a YA audience!” Ok. So is the Clone Wars but Ahsoka decapitates enemies and there is genocide. Whatev.

Also the NEST of GUNDARKS. Like that quote from Episode II. “You fell into that nightmare Master and I rescued you, remember?” Hell yeah. Love.

The grief had coiled around his chest like a great serpent, squeezing the air from his lungs.

I see anything closely related to the imagery Matthew Stover uses in the ROTS novel and feel like that clip of Leonardo Dicaprio pointing at the screen.

Lastly,

“Would anyone like another protein bar?” Obi-Wan tried. Everyone ignored him again.

I really appreciate the tie in to movie references! This book had a different plot that moved around quite a bit and kept me on my toes. I loved seeing some old friends from the Jedi Apprentice series and the character development of Anakin really pushes this book to 5 stars.

Fallout from the Events of the Previous 2 Books Clouds this Mission

This entry in the Jedi Quest series is a more somber affair. Still reeling from the fallout of the mission on Andara and the shocking events of the last book, Anakin and Obi-Wan embark on their most deadly mission yet, trying to prevent an invasion. The two are separated in more ways than one. The trust and bond they had has been frayed. I don't want to giveaway what happens, but this chapter is another major turning point in their relationship, and it will not easily be fixed. Anakin's nemesis, Ferus Olin is able to pick up on things Anakin cannot and it vexes him greatly. We are marching toward an explosive conclusion. The return of another enemy makes for more danger and Anakin is changed by the experience. Not my favorite book, but a great relationship exploration edition.

Probably my least favorite of the Jedi Quest stories so far.

Not anything particularly wrong with The Moment if Truth but unlike some of the others in this series, it just doesn’t seem to go anywhere and really just repeats itself. It’s also running a pattern of one book with the plot to catch Omega, and then a book like this one where Omega is nowhere to be found.

Some kinda interesting ideas that were presented in Moment of Truth (even if they’re not totally explained or explored) and Anakin’s continued struggle with the “chosen one” moniker at least kept this book mostly entertaining.

If you watched Attack Of The Clones and heard the throwaway lines between Obi Wan and Anakin about the time Anakin had to rescue Obi Wan from a nest of Gundarks and thought I want to know the story behind that. Well this is that story.

I don't know why this is the one volume of the series that is so massively overpriced online but I found one for only slightly overpriced and grabbed it. It was good, the tension is building and the character development is excellent. I like little Star Wars stories from time to time, a quick mission that doesn't need a three movie or book trilogy to tell the epic tale...just a little snapshot.

four stars for the emotional damage lmao (“anakin would never betray him” and “nothing overcomes anakins loyalty to his master” and “can’t you take it away?” BYE)

most of the major scenes and action scenes I think could’ve been longer and tbh expected a little more from the famous gundark incident. continues to uphold the ancient star wars tradition of beating the shit out of the mcs and then never addressing it again. anakin just needs a hug and HELLO the ending dialogue no im not ok thanks for asking

When a rescue mission goes wrong, Anakin Skywalker is captured and drugged. He finds his feelings detached from his Force abilities and discovers that he wishes he was always able to detach his feelings and doubts from his awesome power.

Watson captures Anakin's feelings of fear and helplessness very well as she continues the 'Jedi' Quest series.

Anakin and Obi-wan must stop the invasion of a planet by rescuing a team and finding a spy. Of course nothing really goes to plan, Anakin is captured and drugged by Jenna Zan Arbor (From the Jedi Apprentice series, she who captured Qui-Gon and attempted to drain him of his life force, to discover more about "The Force").

Not only does this story explore Anakin's thought process and fears well, but it's also a action heavy and interesting story. However the resolution to the growing rift between Anakin and Obi Wan is settled way to quickly for my liking and the insistence of using old characters instead of new also brings it down for me.

Hmm. This wasn't bad but it was mostly forgettable - until the Big Reveal at the end. I have been enjoying the many and varied references to the Jedi Apprentice series throughout these books, but I feel this is one too far. It would be a lot more interesting if Obi-Wan and Anakin encountered recurring villains that are new threats, not throwbacks.

The mission for this book felt very rushed and just served the purpose of showing us Anakin and Obi-Wans relationship while re-introducing a villain from the first series.

They randomly tell us a member of the Jedi Council, Yarael Poof, died, but they give us absolutely no information regarding it.

Anakin's finally starting to better understand what he's afraid of and why he can't connect to the force in the way his master and other jedi do.

It also includes a depiction of addiction and drug use. It is veiled and brief, but I think quite artfully done.

Understandable that Anakin would still feel guilty about Yaddle. So I guess this is that gundarks adventure referenced in Attack of the Clones. Also I totally got the Les Miserables Easter egg, with Anakin being prisoner 42601 instead of 24601.
