Hereafter

Rate this book
Listening Length: 7 hours and 13 minutes

Detective Samantha Easton has always thought of herself as an adaptable person. But when she nearly dies after being shot on the job, Sam discovers something totally at odds with her rational, analytical personality: she can now see the spirits of people who have died, and she’s not finding it easy to adapt.

As if the sudden appearance of ghosts on the streets of Boston and her dead great-grandmother’s curious questions about her love life aren’t enough, Sam is being haunted by a mystery woman. This beautiful ghost, Mae, has no memories and is unable to move on from this life to whatever comes next—and she wants Sam to solve the mystery of her death.

Sam readily accepts the case, happy to get back to doing what she does best. There’s only one problem: falling in love with Mae wasn’t part of Sam’s plan.

As the two women unravel Mae’s secrets, they fall deeper in love with one another... But how can a ghost and a living person live happily ever after?

This book here is one of the reasons I try random books by random authors – occasionally you come across something that really works for a specific reader – i.e., me. Now this book here came my way slightly less randomly than I’m implying, by two factors. 1) I’d just read a short story by this author, and 2) I’d originally started putting works on and off my possible TBR shelves because they were one of the authors listed for a publisher I’d only read one author by (I forget if I’d originally first added a work by Snowe before or after I’d read something by Natalie Vivien, though know I did after having read Bridget Essex). Let’s move on from my somewhat standard ‘stop talking about yourself, doofus’ paragraph ….

This isn’t the first work I’ve read by this author, just the first one longer than a hundred-fifty pages. Actually, something that was longer than 50, to be technical. I rather liked that previously short story I’d read, but it was just a snippet, a slice of life type, with the hint of possible great romance between the two women who spent time together. Here we have a full-length, albeit short, novel.

The book opens with Detective Samantha Easton dying. Hearing her partner telling her to stay, blinking at the fading light. You know, standard dying type scene. The next time Sam opens her eyes she’s . . . in the hospital, because she had only been shot in the line of duty, not killed. She’s cranky, fidgety, and will have a longish recovery period before heading back to the police. Her partner, as in police partner, helps. Her sister and father don’t help – but then, Sam hasn’t even told them she’d been shot so …..

While exiting the hospital, Sam happens to help a rather gorgeous woman figure out how to exit said hospital. Unfortunately, the woman needed to exit a different way than Sam was going, so she couldn’t spend more time in her presence. This little snippet is of importance, because that woman keeps drifting through Sam’s thoughts – Sam’s quite dedicated to her job, not sure if the phrase was used, but basically married to her job. She’s tried relationships but she’s just horrible at them. So having a woman drift in and out of her thoughts for a week or more is unusual for her.

Time passes. Sam notices certain things during this time, but doesn’t put 2+2 together immediately. Like why the cemetery looks quite crowded (and her partner thinks she was making a joke, acting as if he didn’t see the crowd). Etc. etc. Long way around to noting: Sam sees dead people. Unlike the little boy in that long ago film (bah, that makes me feel old, to think that movie is in fact so old now, that there are people almost able to vote who weren’t alive when the movie was released – talking about Sixth Sense here), the ability to see dead people isn’t exactly new to the family. In fact, that’s one of the jobs her own mother had, beyond the day job of being a physician – she helped ghosts cross over. Of the four people in the family, Sam, sister Carina, dad, mom, two were of the more ‘ghosts’ side, two were of the more ‘ghosts, what ghosts?’ side. Or, more specifically, mom and Carina saw and interacted with the spiritual realm, while pops and Sam didn’t. At least until now that Sam sees ghosts.

Which brings us back to that gorgeous woman spotted in the hospital. Sam sees her several more times (well, at least once more) before realizing what’s going on – she’s seeing a ghost. Who she has the ability to talk with. One thing leads to another, and the two have an actual conversation – and Sam agrees to help Mae figure out what the heck is going on (Mae’s kind of a ghost with amnesia – remembers certain things, doesn’t remember 95% of the rest).

I quite enjoyed this book. Quite riveting. Quite fun. Quite satisfying short novel. I enjoyed all parts of it – beginning, middle, and end.

A soul touching kindle unlimited read.

I have a thing for more metaphysical and spiritual stories. Things with a bit of a different slant on reality. So the blurb for this was right up my alley. What happens when you fall in love with an amnesiac spirit?

I found this really heart fluttering. Detective Sam was all logic, until a near death experience after being shot made her enabled to see ghosts. One in particular named Mae, she is strongly drawn to, like no other. There's a buzz of electricity around their every interaction, and you really feel their connection, and grieve the inevitable hurt they will surely have to endure once Mae remembers all she has to, and moves on from this life, leaving Sam behind.

But don't worry. HEA is always possible. I had my suspicions and while this isn't a particularly deep book, and maybe predictable, I was still all for it and the love between Mae and Sam. What can I say? I'm a big romantic and love a good soulmate tale. Especially one that goes 'beyond the veil'.

I have to admit something first. I read spoiler from someone’s review (sorry i forgot who), so i kind of know the ending already. And tbh if i didnt read that spoiler, i dont think i was going to start this book.

And aww i think i have a crush on Mae. She’s such a sweet girl. I really like her alot. Even though, this book has only Sam’s POV, i think i knew Mae quite well. And yes, she is a ghost/spirit and cant remember anything before her accident. So the story is about helping Mae to move on (pass on?), make her to remember her past and figure out what really happened to her.

I think i dont know what else to say. I enjoyed the book but it didnt give me that kind of vibe, idk, especially at the end, i expected something more excited happened.

3 stars. I'm not too big of a fan of this book. It's well written but I didn't like how the book was rather aimless in middle and how the ending was so predictable. I've seen this play out a couple of times in other stories, it's actually a pretty popular trope for the genre it's written so the book didn't really grab me with its mystery.

The characters are perfectly serviceable but a bit shallow which I guess can be in part forgiven because this is a plot-driven book. Except I knew the plot before I picked up the book so the tension didn't really build for me.

I guess it's a problem with the reader ie me. If you read the blurb and don't know the ending, this might be right up your alley.

Overall this was a sweet story. 3.5 stars. Whoops I can see ghosts and I fall in love with the one I’m trying to help move to the beyond is right up my alley in the campiest way. This didn’t get too angsty, but had the right amount of sweet and angst. It’s a little predictable in how everything all shakes out but it’s a sweet ride. Both MCs in the romance are enjoyable, so is Sam’s sister and great grandmother (also, a ghost!). It was slliiiightly a bit instalove for my tastes, but the circumstances made it less annoying than it might have been in a traditional romance without the paranormal elements. There wasn’t anything particularly special about it, but it was a fun way to pass the time and enjoyable nonetheless. If you like ghost stuff, it’s a fun listen. Lori Prince is as great as always.

An outstanding read!

Sam has a job she loves and was satisfied with her life. A gunshot changed everything and Sam starts to have doubts about her life, her boring and lonely life. An encounter with a gorgeous woman turns her life upside down. This woman crossed her path several times and for the first time she feels things that she couldn't understand. Sam couldn't get her out of her mind and longs to know more about her. Who is this woman? Things turns stranger and stranger and a huge problem stands in the way of her happiness. Plus she can see things that she couldn't before. Sam opens herself up to whatever happens next. This was truly a gripping, wonderful story. It kept me guessing and I was dead wrong about the ending. This disclosure was absolutely amazing and caught me by surprise. I want to travel to Boston and experience this city, the area myself. It is all written in a fresh and lively style and the chemistry between the characters was palpable and intense. A great story that brought me a smile and a tear. I highly recommend it to everyone.

3 stars - Not sure why but this book just didn't work for me. I never really got hooked and only finished it because I was curious how a romance with a ghost would be resolved for a HEA. There is nothing wrong with the book, it's well written it just did not work for me personally. If the premise sounds interesting to you then by all means give it a try.

The magic of lesbian romance.

Hereafter is a terrific book. Take one part, lesbian detective solving a mystery, add one part, lesbian apparition trying to pass over, and mix together to make a poetic romance. Sam, the police Detective, has been shot in the line of duty. She gains second sight after a NDE. Mae, the beautiful soul, locks eyes with Sam as they are leaving the hospital. Their paths are fated to keep crossing as Sam slowly accepts her new abilities. Mae desperately needs her help.

Many storylines come together in this very moving homage to lesbian love. The plot is well crafted and the various characters are skillfully portrayed. The transformative power of love is the central theme in this novel. Separately the hard headed detective and the soft hearted ghost wander lost. When their paths join together, something magical takes hold of everyone.

I love the idea of soulmates. I liked the characters individually but together the romance seemed rushed and forced. It felt like five seconds after Sam finally touched Mae that she was about to proclaim get undying love.

Read all of this author's works, in random order, this was the last to go. Glad it last, because it's the best one. 4.5 really.

I don't do supernatural, or fantasy books, although some slip into my reading list. Happy this one did. The author seems to write the same story in all her books. Not this one. Refreshingly different and sweet, although containing some common plot points many lesbian books contain.

I did guess early on the ending coming, but I read a lot and am good at guessing things like that (it drives some people nuts). YMMV.

I was rather disappointed in this book. I really wanted to like it a lot more than I did. Liked the premise but there were so many things that really bothered me about this.

It was super contradictory throughout the entire book (examples):

*deep breath in and out* Okay. Now I'm done ranting... I ignored how quickly their relationship developed because of how short this is so whatever, but all the above just made it hard to enjoy.

I really wanted to know more about the mother here, though. Get deeper into the paranormal stuff. That's really where this story is at. Feel like the mother's bit was just dangling above everything especially by the end and it left me wanting more.

Overall, I might check out another book by this author after this release date...

This was a pretty good f/f, ghost romance. It had a bit of a secondary mystery plot-line. I don't feel it was solved adequately, so I'm not calling it a romantic mystery. I liked both Mae and Sam, and they were sweet together, even if the romance was a bit insta-love. I adored Sam's investigative partner Patrick though.

The writing was pretty good, clean and easy to understand. Though the narrator had a couple stylistic quirks that, over the course of the book, started to really irritate me. But they might not annoy other people. They really were about style, not quality.

[Mild spoiler] My biggest complaint here is that you never learn how or why any of it happened. There's a connection to something from the past, but you never learn if there's a reason for it. That whole aspect of the plot is never addressed and the book felt weaker for it. Without solving that particular mystery, the book was only left with the romance, which was fine, but why set up a mystery if you're not going to solve it?

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Despite the somewhat morbid premise, I'm pleased to say it has a happy ending. The story primarily focuses on Sam. After an injury on the job, Sam realizes she can see ghosts. One of them is more mysterious than the others, and she tries to help the ghost move on to the afterlife. There are a handful of side characters, and I like how the author kept them in the story instead of introducing them once and never hearing from them again. Her partner patrick isn't just a "yes man"; in addition to providing emotional support, we learn about his family and he provides advice for her. We learn about sam's dysfunctional family and lack of friends, but we don't learn very much about May.

The narrator did fine. She gave Patrick the cheery personality and her dad the old, cranky personality. We feel sam's emotions when she's afraid and excited.

This book is way outside of my normal comfort zone. It is paranormal and a romance, neither of which is my usual genre. I have been expanding my literary world lately, though, and I am glad that I did. The story captivated me in a way that I didn't expect. The writing is very good, the story is sweet, and although it had an unbelievable subject matter, I was still enthralled. The narration was excellent and really brought the characters to life. I wouldn't have normally picked this book, but I am so glad that I took the time to listen!

I received a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left my honest review. The free copy did not influence my review in any way.

Sam, a detective, gets shot & almost dies. Leaving the hospital, a grey-eyed woman asks for directions to leave the hospital. She's lost. Sam can't forget her and so the story begins. Mae, the lost woman, is truly lost; "Of course I'm dead!" The story continues and the reader's drawn into Sam's life as she tries to solve Mae's case. How did she die? Can a person fall in love with a ghost? What happened to Sam's mother that night at the covered bridge? I couldn't put the book down and wasn't disappointed. Well written with the right amount of Sam's angst of opening her heart. There is a happening ending and I can't share without spoiling. Read the book.

I think that I was hoping for a little more peril than this book delivered. I felt like an awesome premise was kind of wasted. Oh! I totally understand the characters' motivation. When a ghost and a living woman fall in love, I'm certain that they would do everything to achieve some sort of "normal". Unfortunately, I felt, they are a little too successful in this story. When I read a story though, I don't want "normal". I want wild and crazy. And this book had so much potential to be wild and crazy.

So, fun and light, but I was in the mood for brooding and dark.

Muy bueno.
No le pongo las 5 estrellas porque al haber leído antes "Ojalá fuera cierto" de Marc Levy, supe exactamente lo que iba a venir. De todas formas, está muy bien escrito y me resultó atrapante.

Sam is a no nonsense police detective who is shot on the job and, like her mother and sister, begins to see ghosts, especially a woman named Mae. Her attraction to Mae is strong as is her promise to help Mae remember enough about her life and death so that she may cross over. In process, the two fall in love.

This is a relatively short book, yet it felt like it was taking me forever to finish it. While the premise is interesting and the twist that forms the resolution is very smart, I just felt the book dragged. A lot of this had to do with the fact that the book was all told from Sam's POV and it the descriptions of her feelings and physical reactions (very repetitive) just annoyed me after a while. I wish the writing had been crisper. I could even see this being a short story or a novella which would tighten it and make the twist have even more punch.
