Keyes was born in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. At age 17, he joined the U.S. Maritime Service as ship's purser. He obtained a B.A. in psychology from Brooklyn College, and after a stint in fashion photography (partner in a photography studio), earned a Master's Degree in English and American Literature at night while teaching English in New York City public schools during the day and writing weekends.
In the early 1950s, he was editor of the pulp magazine Marvel Science Fiction for publisher Martin Goodman. Circa 1952, Keyes was one of several staff writers, officially titled editors, who wrote for such horror and science fiction comics as Journey into Unknown Worlds, for which Keyes wrote two stories with artist Basil Wolverton. From 1955-56, Keyes wrote for the celebrated EC Comics, including its titles Shock Illustrated and Confessions Illustrated, under both his own name and the pseudonyms Kris Daniels, A.D. Locke and Dominik Georg.
The short story and subsequent novel, Flowers for Algernon, is written as progress reports of a mentally disabled man, Charlie, who undergoes experimental surgery and briefly becomes a genius before the effects tragically wear off. The story was initially published in the April 1959 issue of The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction and the expanded novel in 1966. The novel has been adapted several times for other media, most prominently as the 1968 film Charly, starring Cliff Robertson (who won an Academy Award for Best Actor) and Claire Bloom. Keyes went on to teach creative writing at Wayne State University, and in 1966 he became an English and creative writing professor at Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio, where he was honored as a professor emeritus in 2000.

I have to say that the personalities of Sally are too ideal... as if they're from the textbook.
But comparing to The Minds of Billy Milligan, through Fifth Sally I've learned more things about MPD.
1. So actually those "persons" didn't die or disappear; instead, they became parts of Sally. Just like part of me likes art such as dancing, and drawing and part of me likes science and psychology, but I didn't develop individual personalities out of them.
2. Environments matter a lot, but what matters even more is whether you're willing to let go. In my opinion, I think that part of the reasons why Jinx was created was because Sally still hoped that her father would come back. *My thoughts come from The Time Paradox by Phillip Zimbardo and John Boyd. (The past-negative kind)
3. Umm... MPD really requires lots of imagination... I still wonder how those personalities talk to each other... and how do they actually see each other in the mirror. Is that only based on her imagination?

Непогано, але слабше, ніж Біллі Міліґан. Спочатку альтеранативні особистості здавалися злегка неправдоподібними. Далі сюжет розгортався цікавіше, ставало гарячіше, але Деніел Кіз все більше намагася "виїхати" на темі сексу, що йому непритаманне.
В цілому книжка ок. Але незрозуміло, навіщо її читати, якщо є Біллі?
По-перше, Біллі і справді жив.
По-друге, Деніел і так описав його проблеми і проблеми, подібних до нього людей...
Тому виникає запитання: а навіщо тоді читати Саллі?
Порвала історія про кішечку Сіндереллу, але про це вже почитаєте самі, якщо захочете...
В цілому книжка ок. Але незрозуміло, навіщо її читати, якщо є Біллі?
По-перше, Біллі і справді жив.

Well, that was quite a book
I didn't like it. I thought the idea was interesting but the way it's written...
Do you know that feeling when a character does something but you are the one feeling embarrassed, ashamed even? For a strong half of this book that's what I felt. I would close it, take a deep breath and only then open it and continue reading. Questions like 'seriously?!' and 'you are not actually doing/saying that, are you?' would not leave me. This book was so hard to read.
And if I was not feeling that I was feeling disgust. All those scenes from Sally's childhood. It was awful. I understand that it is what it is but still. It's so hard to believe, so hard to imagine that people like that can actually exist that you end up either thinking how unnecessary it all was or how disgusting.
Funny thing, her present was not much better. All those conversations about sex, all those graphic descriptions, thoughts... don't get me wrong, I am one of those people who read fanfictions, so I'm quite used to graphic sex descriptions but here it was unnecessarily, I don't know how to put it,.. dirty? It's like her whole life was about sex. How she can or cannot, want or don't want to do it, and why.
And finally, the psychological part... I felt like I was given a lecture and by a boring professor too. You know how in films characters say something that is obviously said only for the viewers? Well, most of the psychological stuff looked a lot like that type of exposition to me. Especially closer to the end.
And I am not talking about all that philosophical/religious crap.
Now, the last thing I want to talk about is how predictable the book was. Just after reading the preview you can tell how it will end. Just think about the most obvious end and this is the one you'll get. Sally's okay and alone, ready to begin her new life. Hooray. How predictable.
Overall, I did not like this book. Not even a little bit.

I thought it would be something different. It was surprisingly an easy read, I literally flew through it.
But at the same time, something was missing for me.
It felt kinda strange.
And I didn't like Sally's relationship with men.
The romance was too instant. And unnatural. And just not for me.
Everyone who reads this book should be aware of all the triggers -rape, violence, child abuse, etc.

It was a fictional story about a woman with 5 personalities. It was tame compared to the real life accounts. The Billy Mulligan book he wrote was more exciting.

Ammetto di aver terminato questo libro e di esserne rimasta un po' perplessa. Non perché sia brutto, ma perché ho trovato che ci siano molte parti in più, di cui francamente potevo fare anche a meno, soprattutto a fronte di 358 pagine.
Come il titolo suggerisce, la storia ha come protagonista Sally Porter, ma anche Derry, Nola, Bella e Jinx. Sally non lo sa ma in lei vivono ben cinque persone, ognuna diversa e ognuna convinta di esistere davvero. La sua vita è fatta di mal di testa e amnesie, buchi di ore o giorni di cui non ricorda neanche un particolare. Confusa da questa situazione decide di chiedere aiuto al dottor Ash.
Il cuore del racconto sono naturalmente queste personalità multiple che convivono nel corpo di Sally. Jinx è la violenta, Bella è l'attrice disinibita, Nola l'artista e l'intellettuale, Derry quella gentile e affabile. Il rapporto che si è venuto a creare tra loro è strano e particolare, non solo per la situazione in se, già piuttosto originale, ma perchè crea quasi una gerarchia di personalità, in cui Sally, udite udite, non è a capo. Già l'idea di far raccontare a Derry in prima persona e alle altre in terza sottolinea come questa sia la personalità guida di questa donna, quella che cercherà di mettere insieme le cose pur cercando di sopravvivere. Si perché il terrore delle quattro Sally "in più" è questo: se la terapia avrà successo che ne sarà di loro? E così Derry si trova un gradino sopra le altre e diventa la vera protagonista di un racconto fatto di continui mutamenti. A seconda della situazioni una delle cinque donne spunta fuori: là dove ci vuole sfacciataggine Bella dà uno spintone alle altre e prende il controllo, se ci vuole affabilità e buon senso è Derry ad avere la meglio. E se Sally è in pericolo (vero o presunto)? Il vaso di Pandora si scoperchia ed è Jinx a palesarsi.
Viene naturale chiedersi chi sono queste donne? Da dove spuntano fuori? E qui non ho trovato una grande originalità quando l'autore ha tirato fuori un'infanzia difficile, fatta di abusi e di perdite. Ma non è questo che non mi ha convinto del romanzo. Sono i filoni romantici e più sensuali ad essermi sembrati un surplus. In poche pagine Sally incontra e incanta non uno ma due uomini, che si dichiarano immediatamente innamorati di lei, pronti a comprendere la sua situazione tutt'altro che semplice. Credibile? Possibile? Mica tanto, ma soprattutto poco utile nell'economia del racconto. Alla fine mi sono chiesta: Todd ed Eliot sono stati così necessari? Hanno dato veramente qualcosa al racconto? La mia risposta è no, solo qualche scena piccantella. E veniamo al sesso. Ok, lungi da me essere bacchettona su questo argomento, anzi, capisco che sia una componente psicologia importante nel trascorso di Sally... tuttavia, cavoli, tutti lei li trova? Non può uscire di casa che qualcuno le si struscia addosso, la palpa, la guarda con lascivia o ci prova. Anche qui, una forzatura continua.
Non mi ha convita, proprio no. Non ho fatto fatica a leggerlo, anzi scorre veloce, è scritto bene (con qualche congiuntivo che lascia a desiderare), anche se la storia forse risente degli anni passati dall'edizione originale (1980) a quella italiana (2018), tuttavia avrei preferito meno fronzoli esterni (anche la storia del manichino... mah) e magari un finale meno tagliato di netto. Insomma è un classico è intelligente ma non si applica.

Очень ждал эту книгу, прошлые произведения Киза: "Таинственная истории Билли Милигана" и "Цветы для Элджернона" меня не просто удивили, а повергли в шок и стали одними из любимых книг, в личном топе в первой десятке!
И как же я мог упустить новый роман Киза?! Купил в первые же дни начала продаж ☺
Роман был написан за пару лет до Таинственной истории...
Главная героиня Салли страдает как и Билли из-за детских травм СМЛ, но в ней не 24 личности, а всего 5 (включая Салли). После поступков альтернативных личностей, обычно героиня ничего не помнит.
Личности Салли не так интересны как у Билли: красотка Белла, интеллектуальная Нола, логичная Дерри, серая мышь Салли и злая Джинкс. А доктор который лечит Салли применял очень странные методы слияния, лечения и гипноза... Написано легко и понятно, читается без остановок на одном дыхании, содержит минимальное количество научно-медицинских терминов.
Но после Билли звезд с неба не хватает, поэтому не ждите от книги уровня предыдущих произведений Киза

And how could I miss out on a new novel Keyes ?! I bought in the first days of the start of sales ☺

Home Sally heroine suffers like Billy because of childhood trauma LSU, but it is not the individual 24, and only 5 (including Sally). After the actions of alternative personalities, usually the heroine does not remember anything.
Personality Sally is not so interesting as Billy: Beauty Bella Nola intelligent, logical Derry, gray mouse Sally and evil Jinks. A doctor who treats Sally applied very strange fusion methods of treatment and hypnosis ... Written easy and clear to read without interruption in the same breath, contains a minimal amount of scientific and medical terms.
But after Billy stars from the sky is not enough, so do not expect the level of the previous works of the book Keyes

4,5/5 - Неймовірно крута книга! Після прочитання пробачила автору майже всі промахи через те, як неймовірно цікаво було читати цю історію. Всі кажуть, що історія Біллі ще крутіша. Не можу вже дочекатися!!!

2.0-2.5⭐️ My problem is that I still associate Daniel Keyes with “Flowers for Algernon”, which is a) a brilliant book and b) one of my favorites. Now “The Fifth Sally” is also not bad. It is very interesting and gives a pretty broad overview of multiple personality diagnoses. However, the biggest con in this book is that Sally, being a very intelligent and logical person, is completely unaware of her situation. While everyone else around her can clearly see it but seems to be totally on board with it. Some are even happy with it. What an absurdity.

Freud also said that it is very important that in childhood no shocks occur that will contribute to inferior maturation. But, what if there are not those who are able to explain to you what is good and what is bad. What if you try to formulate your consciousness yourself? What if your childhood was not cloudless at all and you are not that strong , you can not cope with this alone. Then your consciousness asks for help and finds it in creating a new alter ego or maybe a few. Dissociative personality disorder (cleavage) has not been fully understood to this day, but one of the reasons is that we are not able to carry these events alone, creating ourselves stronger, smart, brave, able to endure pain. -not the whole you, now there is more than one you exist in one body.and only professional help - is a cure,someone who will genuinely believe and want to help you, will be able to help u see the way , to remember all , to not step back and reunite with one own self .
The book, as always, which was to be expected from the author is amazing. I was very much looking forward to translating Daniel Keyes's books, since after reading several times "flowers for algernon" and "minds of billy milligan" -this author remains the most beloved and the only one, able to take me to another world from the very first pages of his completely unexplored worlds.
Самого детства ,благодаря нашим родным нам объясняют , что такое хорошо, что такое плохо. Формирую тем самым наше сознание. Ещё Фрейд говорил о том, что очень важно чтобы в детстве не произошло каких-либо потрясений ,которые поспособствуют неполноценному созреванию. Но, что если нет тех, кто способен тебе объяснит, что такое хорошо, а что плохо. Что если ты пытаешься сформулировать своё сознание сам? Что если твоё детство было совсем не без облачным и буди не окрепшим человеком, справиться с этим в одиночку ты уже не в силах. Тогда твоё сознание просит помощи и находит Ее в создании нового альтер эго, а может несколько. Диссоциативное расстройство личности(расщепление) по сей день не изучено до конца, но одним из причин, является , то, что мы не в состоянии перенести те или иные события в одиночку, создавая себе более сильных, умных , смелых, способных перенести боль -Я.и только помощь профессионал, который будет искренне верить и хотеть тебе помочь -сможет оказать это помощь, собрав тебя в единое целое.
Книга, как всегда, чего и следовало ожидать от автора потрясающая. Я очень ждала перевода книг Дэниела Киза ,так как после прочтения несколько раз "цветы для алджернона" и "разумы билли миллигана "-этот автор остаётся самым любимы и единственным, контрой способен увлечь меня в другой мир с первых страниц его совсем неизведанного мира.

Nachdem ich letztes Jahr The Minds of Billy Milligan vom selben Autor gelesen habe wurde mein Interesse am Thema Dissoziative Identitätsstörung geweckt. Eigentlich fand ich dieses Thema schon immer interessant, aber ich kannte die multiple Persönlichkeitsstörung, wie sie früher genannt wurde, eben nur aus Filmen und Büchern, in denen die betroffenen Personen eigentlich immer relativ negativ dargestellt wurden. In The Minds of Billy Milligan wurde nun an einer wahren Begebenheit sehr intensiv gezeigt was es bedeutet unter dieser Störung zu leiden und wie es überhaupt zu dieser kommt. Mein Interesse war geweckt.
Bei meinen Recherchen wurde ich schnell fündig. Allerdings waren es weniger psychologische Artikel die mich aufklärten, als viel mehr echte betroffene Personen die auf YouTube von ihrem Leben mit dieser Störung berichten. Dort hat sich mittlerweile eine richtige Gemeinschaft gebildet der es wichtig ist Aufklärung zu betreiben, denn bei diesen Menschen handelt es sich eben nicht grundsätzlich um gewalttätige, sexbesessene Monster wie sie in vielen Filmen und Büchern gerne darstellt werden. Leider hat diese Darstellung zu vielen Vorurteilen geführt, was das sonst schon nicht leichte Leben der Betroffenen zusätzlich erschwert.
Genau aus diesem Grund hat mich The Fifth Sally auch enttäuscht, denn hier haben wir wieder klischeehafte Persönlichkeiten, die entweder absolut gewalttätig, sehr triebgesteuert oder extrem naiv sind. Es stimmt zwar, dass die einzelnen Persönlichkeiten in einem System verschiedene Aufgaben übernehmen, doch bedeutet das nicht, dass sie deshalb eindimensional sind. Auch die Darstellung des Arztes fand ich fragwürdig, wobei ich zugeben muss, dass das Buch schon älter ist und es sein könnte, dass vor 30 Jahren so therapiert wurde. Um aber auch noch etwas positives zu nennen, muss ich sagen, dass die Rückblicke und die Situationen die zur Abspaltung der einzelnen Persönlichkeiten geführt haben sehr glaubwürdig waren und den Leser auf jeden Fall mit Sally mitfühlen lassen.
Vielleicht hätte mir die Geschichte vor ein paar Jahren noch gut gefallen, doch nachdem ich mich im letzten Jahr sehr intensiv mit der Dissoziative Identitätsstörung auseinandergesetzt habe konnte sie mich heute leider nicht mehr überzeugen. Wenn man etwas über dieses Thema und die Zusammenhänge lesen möchte würde ich daher auf jeden Fall eher zu The Minds of Billy Milligan raten.

Questo libro tratta un argomento molto particolare, il disturbo dissociativo dell'identità, personalità multiple. In Sally, la protagonista, vivono ben 5 personalità, ognuna con specifiche caratteristiche. C'è Sally che è timida e gentile, Jinx violenta e arrabbiata, Bella seducente e disinibita, Derry la traccia felice e piena di gioia e Nola intellettuale e artista. Per una serie di motivi si sono dissociate e spetta al dottor Ash il compito di uniformarle, di creare una quinta Sally completa.
Mi ha molto colpito questo libro proprio per l'argomento trattato. Si capisce da subito che l'autore è decisamente competente così che un tema così delicato venga compreso da tutti. Il libro analizza proprio le dinamiche che portano alla creazione delle varie personalità e alla possibile guarigione della paziente. La storia è romanzata e questo mi è piaciuto, non è solamente un trattato di psicologia. Lo stile è scorrevole e io l'ho letto in pochissimo tempo.
Ho mantenuto però un certo distacco dal libro, non sono riuscita a provare empatia per la protagonista proprio perché è decisamente psicologico. A tratti l'ho trovato troppo tecnico ma nell'insieme mi è piaciuto. Mi ha fatto riflettere sul mio eventuale comportamento se dovessi incontrare persone con questa patologia. Ho odiato profondamente le infermiere (soprattutto una) del reparto ma non so come avrei reagito io.
È stata una lettura inquietante e istruttiva che mi ha aperto gli occhi su problemi di cui sapevo poco niente (anche la sindrome di burnout, che non avevo mai sentito).

Daniel Keyes si conferma uno splendido autore non solo di autobiografie mediche (Una stanza piena di gente) ma anche di romanzi.
Keyes ha usato per la creazione di questa storia gli studi che lui stesso ha fatto sulla personalità multipla, identificando tutti i topoi del caso -per quanto possibile- e creando Sally, donna divisa in cinque parti.
Ho amato, come sempre, il modo di descrivere dell'autore, che come al solito mi ha coinvolto totalmente nello sviluppo di questa storia.
Ammetto di non aver sopportato Sally all'inizio della storia ma nel momento in cui il tutto prende piede le cose sono cambiate e ho cominciato ad apprezzarla.
È sicuramente un libro che si legge facilmente, di meno impatto rispetto a "Una stanza piena di gente" ma ugualmente importante, perchè apre gli occhi su un tema non molto conosciuto e che spesso viene sottovalutato.
Fra l'altro Keyes narra senza mai essere pesante e questo non è che un plus in più al tutto.

This is a book from the past, from a past where literature was literature, without cynicism, without tiktok, without catering to the lowest common denominator, without political bullshit, but with ample power to gut punch, hurt, impress and awe. Daniel Keyes can do no wrong and despite my own opinions about the way in which multiple personality disorder can manifest (significantly less theatrical), I really appreciate his dedication to the subject. Sally's alters captured me, although I could anticipate the horrendous traumas that caused each. The ending was absolutely perfect for this book and in general, it was a whole, satisfying, understandable and philosophical ending.

Книга - это хронология лечения Салли, воссоединение всех ее личностей, которые уживались в теле и владели им когда угодно в единую личность, имеющую все характеристики и эмоции полноценного человека.
Советую эту книгу, так как здесь очень интересно описаны человеческие (женские) эмоции и страхи.

Надзвичайно легкий стиль автора захоплює з перших сторінок. Інтригуючий сюжет. Щира любов. Глибока психологія та відвертий секс. Це все, що ви знайдете у цій книжці.
Вона трохи слабше мене вразила, аніж Історія Міллігана, але зважаючи на те, що це вигадка, а не реальна історія, сюжет лаконічніший та й завершення історії дисоціативного розладу Саллі Портер, у якій живе 5 таких різних особистостей, приємно тішить.
На палітурці слід було вказати 16+. Я не очікувала такої відвертості та жорстокості у романі, проте, цим він і прекрасний. Такий різний та вражаючий.

L'ho trovato molto originale. Riuscire a scrivere una sorta di thriller parlando di questioni meramente psicologiche non è da tutti.
L'autore è uno psicologo che ha trattato diversi pazienti affetti da disturbi dissociativi dell'identità. Leggendo il romanzo traspare immediatamente la sua competenza e soprattutto il suo saper condividere con il lettore le proprie conoscenze rendendole facilmente comprensibili.
Sally ha dei vuoti di memoria che non riesce a spiegarsi e solo andando in terapia col dottor Ash riesce a prendere coscienza delle altre identità che albergano in lei e che la fanno agire in un modo che lei mai si immaginerebbe.
Il percorso terapeutico andrà dal riconoscimento del problema alla sua risoluzione, attraverso l'accettazione delle parti di sé che Sally non è mai riuscita ad accettare fino a quel momento. E la parte aggressiva sarà quella più difficile da individuare e da assimilare per il dolore e la rabbia che porta con sé.
Il romanzo è scritto molto bene, è avvincente e istruttivo. È una lettura particolare che aiuta ad esplorare i misteri della psiche umana.

Взагалі, я була здивована, коли дізналася той факт, що «Саллі» була написана до «Таємничої історії Біллі Міллігана». Саме в ній Кіз почав підіймати тему множинної особистості.
Саллі знаходять біля берега океану. Вона без свідомості, не пам’ятає що з нею сталося. До всього цього, чоловіки, які натрапили на дівчину, ще й хотіли її зґвалтувати. Саллі потрапляє до лікарні, де лікарі чують, що вона не коїла самогубство, і це був хтось інший. Лікарі розуміють, що тут щось не так, і починають виявляти, що саме. В результаті в голові Саллі «знайшли» ще 5 особистостей дівчат. А далі починається копирсання лікарів у голові Саллі. Спеціалісти намагаються розібрати, що було з дівчиною раніше, і як народилися інші дівчата в її мізках.
Це, фактично, та сама історія, що Біллі, але про жінку.Можливо, Кіз тренувався тут, і ця книга була для нього такою собі пробою пера. І все найкраще вже втілилося в книзі «Таємнича історія Біллі Міллігана».

Склалось враження, що автор кудись спішив, поки писав цю книгу. Недостатньо глибоко описані всі множинні особистості Саллі, і те, як довірливо психотерапевт відпускав Саллі після кожного злиття додому, в той же час будучи свідомим щодо можливих небезпек... Надто фантастично, як на мене.
Якщо читати ДО Біллі Мілігана - мабуть, зайде краще :). Після Біллі історія Саллі виглядає поверхневою та трішки відірваною від реальності.
Плюси: легко читається, множинні особистості доволі цікаві.

Він знає, що у темряві...
Саллі Портер ніколи не існувала, але вона - образ усіх людей з множинними особистостями. Вона пройде шлях від заперчення до прийняття, а ми будемо бачити кожну з її "співмешканок" їхніми ж очима, потроху дізнаватися про те, що привело їх в цей світ. А це були ті ще випадки... І можна тільки дивуватися, на що здатен людський мозок, щоб захистити себе (нас?) від оточуючих, від негативу, від злості. Але якими б реальними не здавались ці особистості, все ж вони - лише частини цілого і кожна сприймає довколишній світ у свій власний обмежений спосіб. Та чи може це й справді бути кроком уперед людської еволюції, захисним механізмом, винайденим природою, але ще не відшліфованим?
Хоча інколи і здається, що події відбуваються занадто швидко, та читається книжка легко і, як на мене, зовсім не поступається "Таємничій історіїї Біллі Міллігана".

Книга дуже сподобалася. Історія про жінку із множинними особистостями нагадує кожного з нас, в яких є різні частини і які для цілісного повноцінного життя мають бути об'єднані та інтегровані. Іноді важко прийняти щось у собі, але часто це є тим механізом, який колись допоміг вижити.

Berbeda dari karyanya yang lain seperti Charlie dan Billy yang merupakan kisah nyata, buku ini murni berdasar imaginasi Daniel Keyes. Dan di sini karakter utamanya Sally Potter yang sangat flat punya 4 kepribadian lain yang lebih berwarna dan sangat khas wanita : Jinx yang pemarah, Derry yang supel, Nola yang cerdas plus artistik, dan Bella yang sensual dan sangat hedonis. Setiap kepribadian merasa lebih daripada Sally, dan mereka merasa lebih berhak karena mereka lebih bisa menikmati hidup. Jadi apakah Sally bisa di sembuhkan?
Tema MPD adalah salah satu favoritku. Di saat novel lain hanya membahas MPD dari luar dan menjadikan si korban sebagai obyek penceritaan, buku ini menjadi unik karena para pribadi ini yang menarasikan perjalanan hidup mereka. Alur maju dan mundur terasa alami dan tidak membingungkan. Penulis dengan cerdas memasukan penjelasan mengenai penyebab, penyakit dan metode penyembuhannya dalam sesi-sesi pengobatan Sally.
Buku ini seru dan membuat penasaran. Tiap pribadi sangat unik sehingga aku bisa menyukai semuanya. Hal cerdas yang dilakukan Daniel di sini adalah dia bisa memggambarkan dengan baik sifat 5 kepribadian yang berbeda, mengabungkannya tapi juga tetap membuat kepribadian tersebut masih bisa nampak jejaknya dalam Sally Kelima.
