Valerie Howard
Contemporary Women's Christian Fiction
"Real women. Tough issues. Powerful God."

Valerie's goal in writing is to bring people closer to Jesus one chapter at a time.

Valerie has been writing stories since she was in second grade when she wrote "The Mystery of the Missing Crayon." She gave up writing mysteries soon after and now concentrates on real-life stories that tackle tough issues such as homelessness, unplanned pregnancy, family tragedy, childhood trauma, foster care, poverty, and terminal cancer. All of her books are filled with the hope and love of Christ and are uplifting and feel-good with happy, though sometimes tearful, endings as her characters overcome their obstacles with God at their side. She also writes biblical non-fiction, indie author non-fiction, children's books, allegorical fiction, and small church Christmas plays. (She's a little obsessed with writing.)

Valerie is a fan of summer, warmth, and flip-flips, so she often wonders why she lives in Maine where she is frozen for the better half of the year. But her amazing husband and adorable sons live there with her, so it's not all bad. She graduated from Bible College with a degree in Bible and Missions a long, long time ago in a state far, far away.

Wow, what an insightful short story! Read it through in one evening. If you are looking for a read with the perspective of someone in foster care, this is it. Also a clear gospel message tucked in at the end, though brief it adds a lot to the character's struggles. Made me wonder about how many children in 'the system' suffer like Daisy did.
Sweet ending. No romance. The first time reading anything by this author.

Title: Picking Daisy
Written By: Valerie Howard
Genre: Contemporary Christian Fiction
Recommended Ages: 13 & up

Introduction:
For a while now, I've been interested in the whole foster care/adoption types of things. But I didn't know a lot about it. My parents did foster care for babies when I was young, so we never had to deal with the "problems" of the older kids. This book was very eye opening, but at the same time entertaining.

Characters: 1/1
Elise definitely had her flaws as did DJ and the other characters. But even with all their flaws, they had good qualities as well. Even DJ who after meeting her at the beginning of the book, you would think she's just a girl destined to be put in jail. But after a while of getting to know her, you realize she has some sweetness and compassion to her, too. Valerie did a good job of portraying the characters.

Dialogue: 1/1
The dialogue made me cry, laugh, feel sad, and generally feel whatever emotion it was supposed to.

Plot/storyline: 1/1
I can't recall reading a book about foster care and adoption before. This is one that will stick with me for a while. The plot and storyline were very good.

Overall writing quality: 1/1
Every part of this story was very well done.

Un-put-down-ability: 1/1
I did not want to put this book down. I literally read it in three days. Which is unusual for me. For a full-length novel, I usually take at least a week to get from beginning to end simply because of my limited time to read. So I'm glad I started it just before a weekend so I could take the weekend to read a little extra.

Conclusion: 5/5
Read this book. It will likely change your view of certain behaviors. Or at least bring a little more compassion to your heart regarding children in foster care and what they are going through. Valerie also lists some places at the end were you can donate to monetarily or with your time. I highly recommend this book.

Good addition to the series. Picking Daisy is about both sides of fostering - serving as a foster parent and being a child in the foster care system.

When I started reading this, I couldn't remember what the story was even about, so I didn't think anything of starting it one evening when I only had a short time to read. Mistake! Yes, I put it down several times because I had to, but that doesn't mean I wanted to.

Right from the beginning I was pulled in and wanted to help DJ. I felt compassion, and sympathy for her. It was tough, there were difficulties and struggles, there were mentions of foster families who don't have any love for the kids they take in, and there was the offer of hope and love being rejected again and again. So much real life!
Elise was sweet and eager to give DJ what she needed, but at the same time she was so insecure. I'm so glad she had a friend who could give her encouragement.

I didn't like the whole church with strobe lights, drums, loud noise, and such, and completely understood DJ's headache!

I wouldn't recommend this to younger readers because of the tough subject matter and an episode near the beginning, but anyone ready to handle the heartache of foster life, and the baggage it can contain will find a story worth reading. Yes, I'm sure I'll be reading this again sometime.

So, the situations dealt with in this book aren't easy in the slightest, but they were so realistic that I never had trouble believing them while not seeming to play things up just for the sake of shock. Orphans/adoption/foster care is a subject that's very close to my heart, and while I've never had direct experience with it, I know a lot of people who have, and I thought the struggles and challenges were portrayed really well.

I felt a little like I do in some romance books when the characters were miscommunicating/misunderstanding each other--for lack of a better term, call it the "just say something!" syndrome--but it didn't frustrate me nearly as much as it sometimes does because what they were and weren't saying and why they were and weren't saying it made absolute sense for these specific characters and the positions they were in. That is, I never felt like the communication problems were stuck in for the sake of a plot point; it felt so natural and organic knowing where each of them was coming from.

My heart went out to DJ from the very beginning, and I thought the author did a great job of showing the hurt and fear that ran underneath all her anger and lashing out. Not that I approved of all of her behavior, but I understood it, and when she was wrong, I wanted to bring her back to the truth, rather than wanting to shake her. Elise was very sweet, and I sympathized with her insecurities, even as I could see what a great job she was doing. I really liked Cathy as well. :) And I seriously wanted to slap some of the foster parents in DJ's recollections. >:(

There was one scene/issue near the beginning that almost made me put the book down, but it didn't go the way it seemed to be going, although it did get pretty intense and serious. Because of that issue and a couple of other mentions of abuse, drugs, etc., I would recommend this only for mature readers. But the story is very well-done, the lessons are worthwhile, and the spiritual lessons are strong. Definitely a worthwhile read!

Content--see spoiler above for one disturbing incident; mentions of violence and smashing things in anger; mentions of various kinds of abuse; mentions of deaths ; various crimes committed, including stealing and vandalism; ; a girl suffers severe panic attacks and flashbacks

I read this book in one day—I would have liked to have done it in one sitting, but alas... someone had to make dinner. This story is so realistic-feeling, and I quickly ended up caring about the characters. The best part? It made me want to love on my little guys extra hard. I may not be in a position to foster other little kids right now, but I was sure convicted about showing love to my own even when they're being beyond awful.
Would recommend to anyone of any age who can handle the rougher parts of Daisy's past.

I'll say straight up that Valerie Howard is my favorite indie Christian author, hands down. Her stories tackle hard subjects and characters with deep wounds, but she handles it so tastefully. PICKING DAISY is no exception. DJ is an orphaned girl in the foster system, bouncing through dozens of homes for the last six years. Elise is a widowed woman in her 50's who'd never thought of fostering. They're an unlikely match, but of course, they're perfect for each other. Elise is a Christian of the very best sort, living out her love, forgiving, forgiving, forgiving. She's humble enough to know when she doesn't know what she's doing, and seeing her heart accept new challenges as DJ learns to accept love is a beautiful story. Have a box of Kleenex handy at the end--happy tears.

This was most definitely my favourite in all of this "New England Inspiration" series . . . and I definitely cried several tears. The selflessness and the giving that Elie Gilpatrick demonstrated time and again was beautiful -- a true definition of love itself.

The pain and distrust that DJ has gone through in her short life is so hard and painful to read about . . . yet it is a common story. And that is heartbreaking.

When Elise Glipatrick decides to become a foster parent and is paired with DJ, things happen. Some funny, some heart wrenching, all beautiful and messy. And the wonderful, beautiful things that arise out of the brokenness is a wondrous thing.

The love of Christ is so plainly seen in this story, and I absolutely loved it. I will definitely be re-reading!!

I really liked this book! It was easy to keep reading, and I bonded with the characters right away. They didn't really even seem like characters - more like real people.
DJ is a broken teen in the foster system who has been through horrible things. Elise is a woman who never thought she'd be good enough to be a mom. I love how their lives connect, and complement each other. And how Elise shows God's love even when it's super tough.
It was written beautifully, and sheds light on foster care, and some of the horrible things that occur within too.
"Picking Daisy" has many heart-wrenching moments. It was well written, and the faith message was good.
Another great one from this author. :)

I picked up this book as a read for continuing education for my CASA work and it was thoroughly enjoyable, heart-rending and uplifting. Though in 3rd person, it alternates viewpoints between DJ, a foster kid on her 3rd caseworker and 30-something foster family and Elise, who is a first time foster parent. Elise is afraid of blowing it as a parent and DJ is afraid of ending up in a group home and their dynamic is a bit intense as they get to know one another. As a person who has been exposed to the good, bad and ugly of care through volunteer work, I found Elise's perspective to be a bit refreshing. DJ's perspective was one that was more familiar to me, but it was good to see her "thoughts" as she plotted to get out of the system. It amplified my convictions as I believe DJ would have thoroughly benefited from having a CASA in her corner. :) This was a thoroughly enjoyable story regardless of your reason for reading it. I would recommend it if you're interested in foster care particularly, but also to anyone who enjoys good faith-filled women's fiction that handles tough issues and unique family dynamics. This was a great read and I look forward to checking out more by this author.

Not surprisingly, I binged this in a couple sittings. Valerie’s pace of writing always makes it easy for me to keep reading.

This book will tug on your heart strings though! Seeing both sides of foster care was very eye opening, tense, & emotional at times, knowing many kids like DJ spend their entire childhoods waiting to feel wanted. Carrying their physical & emotional baggage from place to place, assuming no one wants to understand them & often giving up.

At the same time, Elise represents the people that so badly want to make a difference in someone’s life because having total control over our own lives isn’t as satisfying as it sounds every day.

Both ladies battle very relatable self-doubts through the story about being good enough for each other.
There’s a wonderful message packed in there too that really brings everything together.

I can’t wait to read more of this series! I love the variety of these stories, & despite contemporary not usually being my go-to genre, Valerie has definitely made something special in her New England Inspirations that keeps bringing me back.

This book was different from what I usually read but I listened to a sample and I wanted to hear the rest of the story. It is an audiobook and the narrator was pleasant to hear. The story was interesting and thought provoking. Picking Daisy really touched me because I have a heart for children that doesn’t have parents or have bad parents. I also have friends that have been foster parents. This story gives us both sides, of a foster parent and the child. I had compassion for both with the struggles they had. DJ was so scared of rejection from yet another person that she couldn’t even begin to think why Elise was being so nice. Elise trying to be so pleasant but going about it the wrong way.
If you want to read an unforgettable story that shows brokenness, rejection faith, redemption and unconditional love you have to read this one. I will remember this book for a long time and I will probably listen to it again.

I am reviewing the audible version of this book!!!!

This story was absolutely unputdownable.

I was totally captivated by Daisy’s and Elise’s story.

The story was totally believable. and realistic. Daisy and Elise didn’t just get along right away. It took time. Even when i thought things were finally working out, something would happen to put me back on the edge of my seat.
The story had lots of good lessons, and encouragement, without being preachy.
Parts of the story made me cry. I won’t mention which parts, as i don’t want to create any spoilers.
I would love to see these characters again in the future.
The Narration was very good. Her voice was pleasant to listen to, and the book was read very well.

I understand this book is part of a series. I really hope the rest of the series will be recorded in audio, or even other books. I would love to read more from this author.
I would highly recommend this book.

Picking Daisy by Valerie Howard

The title of this book seems like a light and fluffy book. In reality it is a heart searching journey for Elise who is a 50 something woman who feels that she has something to give and decides to foster children and teens.

DJ is a young teen who has been through multiple traumas and uncountable foster homes. He life is anything but easy, and at time PTSD becomes uncontrollable.

Elise is flawed, has never been a mother, and is hopelessly over her head with DJ. DJ doesn’t want to like Elise. All they do works against each other, but Elise doesn’t give up, and neither does God.

I couldn’t put the book down, and when I did finish, it was still on my mind. It was realistic, well written, and the characters were beautifully flawed. I think this book should be required reading for anyone thinking about fostering older children.

❤ Oh boy. This might be my favorite in the series. Somehow I completely empathized with both the MC's and I was just soo completely invested in the story by the time it started to wrap up the loose ends. I was like "No, no, no Daisy!! You've got to trust. You've got to be patient. Just hold on a little bit longer!!!" I definitely recommend this book. It was so well done, and I enjoyed every minute of it.
It also helped me understand even more than I did how easy it can be to get completely misunderstood and uncared for in the foster system. I really appreciated this book. I think you'll appreciate it too.

This is a beautiful and emotional story. DJ is a foster child who has been shuffled through the system and lost her faith in God.
Elise is a middle aged woman who has always felt like her life was missing something. When their paths cross, they struggle to see Gods plan. Will they be able to put the puzzle together to see the plan?

This was such an emotional and thought provoking story. I was so moved by this story and the characters. Ms. Howard pulled me into DJs story and tugged at my heartstrings and left me crying in the end.

I highly recommend this book!

Valerie Howard is a writer to watch. Excellent contemporary women's fiction. I would have liked to give an even higher rating but one issue really bothered me - when the main character decided to sort things out (when she should have prayed and let God come up with a better solution). One issue in an otherwise excellent book.
I did find the main character irritating but her nervousness in fostering a child makes sense.
For readers who like their Christian fiction, realistic.

Without any planning or thought she became a foster parent to a fifteen year old D J A story that deals with both of them flawed and learning
For D J the trauma she has had will test Elsie, but the rewards will be worth it. A good story showing being a foster parent to a teenager
The audio was well done. Given ARC audio for my voluntary review and my honest opinion

Heart rending

This book is not for wimps. It gives you the barest glimpse of what foster care can be like, and how damage can skew thinking to just continue the trend. It also shows you how the pattern and cycle can be broken with true love. Not an easy read, but worthwhile, with a good ending. Reading the next one in the series now.

I loved this story and how it explores the reality of the trauma children in foster care have been through while still giving hope and a happy ending. All the feels. Great Christian fiction.
