The Cottage

Rate this book
A fresh start and a new life, that's exactly what Nadia Monroe needs when she moves to South Carolina. With plans for renovations dancing in her head, she looks forward to breathing life into her old cottage by the beach and most importantly, herself.

Not used to being on her own, she sets out on a new chapter of her life hoping to find friends and happiness. Inspired by some of her favorite books, Nadia discovers adventures are just a wine bottle away, but it's the friendship forming in her neighbor, Laine Montgomery, that has Nadia grateful for the move. With a bit of good-natured Southern meddling from Laine's best friend, Susannah, could more than friendship be on the horizon between Nadia and Laine?

I really enjoyed this read and it's my first one from Caroline Jimenez. The book is about Nadia Monroe and how she buys an old in need of fixing cottage in South Carolina. She's a big Sparks fan (and honestly, I am too...just a sucker for romances and mainly HEA) so this was her way of living or start living a romantic dream and her life. BTW did you get that little irony or is it forshadowing in my use of "in need of fixing" cottage cause yea it plays a subtle but big part in the story.
Anyway, the book is really good. Jimenez does a great job moving the story along quickly and subtly and we are able to not only read but feel the emotion Nadia has for each character. I do wish we could have read about Gabi and her reconciling and maybe just a little more with Allen but I get thag it may have slowed the story.
It's definitelt worth the read and I look forward to the next one. Plus it's a kU read!!

I complained about the previous book I read, noting that a lot of time passed in it, lots of people doing things, living their lives, etc. etc., but the reader only saw something like 0.5% of any of that. I mention because this book is somewhat similar, not as compressed as 'Something for the Weekend', but still compressed.

As an example, I mentioned in my status updates that the book moved from 'let's roll around in bed together' to 'it was a month later' without any kind of break. Well I was wrong. That 'month later' stuff was at the start of the next chapter. Guess I didn't see that gigantic 'Chapter 10' written there. But still that's my point, no not the lack of break, I was wrong about that, but the part wherein they finally, after a lot of teasing, finally get to the bed and . . . it's a month later. I really have no idea how much time occurred in this book because this kept happening over and over again. Time just flying by. Skipping. It read like a highlight reel instead of a relationship - 'person A moves in; meet person B; they flirt; eventually (really long eventually) move past the 'is she even interested in me? part; skip to month later; relationship and family crisis etc. etc.' The highlight reel.

And there's a betrayal that occurs in this book. I really didn't like how it was handled. How everyone (well, it felt that way, maybe just the only people who commented on it), thought that it was the person betrayed who owed the betrayer the apology. And then . . . .

The characters had character and personality and stuff. This isn't a paper-thin book here. And there was a plot and stuff. Just certain things annoyed me and certain things were way over the top (I won't mention what I mean there ()).

Book is probably better than I'm making it out to be. I just hit that betrayal moment and didn't want anything to do with the rest of the book. But read it anyway.

2 1/2 stars rounded. This book reads like a debut book for this author. There is a lot of childish wording that was at times laughable. i.e. "Just gotta ka-pow that sucker right in the nose and hope for the best." Really?

Close to Home

I actually really enjoyed this book. It actually hit pretty close to home for me and I found myself with some watery eyes a couple times. My Mom had been diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease and passed away this past December unexpectedly. It is so incredibly difficult to watch your loved go through this horrible disease and try to do whatever you can to take care of them as best you can. Yes, you do miss out on some things during this time but I like the main character in this book wouldn't have done anything differently. This book is about more than that though and I found it really enjoyable to read. The relationship that develops between the two main characters was so sweet and a pleasure to read about. I too was a huge Nicholas Sparks fan and have seen all the movies at most of the books. I kind of skipped the last couple when I discovered the world of lesbian fiction.;). Anyway, it's a great read and I'm looking forward to Caroline's next book!

Absolutely loved this storyline

Amazing book, I absolutely adore Nicholas Sparks books and this was just as refreshing. I've always wished for romance lesfics growing up and this is definitely a good one I'd recommend it to everyone. I don't always like rereading books but I will definitely be revisiting this one. Great job Caroline, I can't wait to see what else you come out with.

Nice Story

It was really cute the way they referenced all those Nicholas sparks books. I had never heard of the author or read the books or watched the movies so I may have to at least check one out.

This story had so much romance going for it.

Spoiler:

I deducted mega points for unnecessary drama. Seriously cut out that last bit o'drama and the story would have been great.

Intense

This is a great story about loss and gain, about renovation, from inside out. About forgiveness and holding on, about love and feelings. Nadia is strong, sensitive and loyal. Laine is honest, gorgeous and daring. The scenery is rich and the narrative help you live it, even feel it. The characters are captivating, Sin, Owen, Chase, Gabi and even Allen. I enjoyed every page, I loved it, lived it and I definitely recommend it. You. Jimenez girls, made me cry and smile.... Well done!!!

Borrowed from Kindle library. Good book. Liked the fact that the love scenes were not explicit . Quite frankly, I get tired a reading all of the descriptive references of body parts. The story took a very unexpected twist that really surprised me. Worth reading. The only thing that I did not get was why Nadia wore dresses ALL of the time.

I just couldn't get into this. Between the sentence fragments, jumpy narration, and weird character introductions I just can't continue.
