Letters to War #2

Sincerely Daniella

Rate this book
Rowark, Rhode Island wasn’t supposed to be the place where Corporal Taylor Phillips found home, but inside a little bungalow was a family she never thought she’d have. All she had to do was finish her service, and she’d get to go home to them.
Daniella Melo, however, soon realizes that Taylor’s job isn’t all about fighting bad guys and protecting people as her daughter, Jackie, makes it out to be. With every letter they exchange and each hasty phone call, the distance between them grows strained.
In the span of one night, both their worlds are turned upside down, and Daniella is left to pick up the pieces of her life. Without Taylor.

Yup the tears fell on this one...

Man this was great continuation to Dani amd Taylor's story. Tears actually fell...not the ugly crh type tears but tears nonetheless. If you loved or even liked the first one you will love this one. So much emotion both happy and sad. Heartstrings are pulled in all sorts of directions...and the best part...it has a HEA that fits the direction the story had to take (I don't think that gives anything away). I will say this much Taylor and even Rich pissed me off at one point in the story...I mean how do you just leave Dani and Jackie like that.
Anyway...READ IT.

This is a 'funny' place I find myself in now. At about 36% into the story I made the brilliant and detailed observation in my status updates that "this series turned to crap." I know exactly what made me make that observation but it's one of those things that's so spoiler-y to mention that I don't even want to put it under spoiler tags (). Of course, once I saw what happened, I immediately looked at the book description - if you haven't yet, don't look (stupid book descriptions including spoilers, mmphs). If you have, then you already know the issue. I, of course, didn't look at the book description before reading.

Right, sorry, that wasn't the funny place. No, it's that I had that thought 36% into the book and . . . seriously want, need, desire to break my own rules and put this book on my six star book shelf (which is supposed to only contain those books that I've both reread and feel are the best of the best). Seriously, I do wish to do that.

I'm not really sure what I can say without being spoiling things. Sure the book description spoils things, but I'm not the book description.

Despite the way the book opens, it continues close to where the previous book ended (). Taylor's back among her fellow military unit in Iraq.

Sergeant Briggs has taken over for Sergeant Rick. And Briggs puts up a massive air of hating Taylor. Initially because she is a woman, eventually there's an air of terror created by how Briggs might, might know that Taylor is a lesbian.

Meanwhile Daniella is raising her adopted daughter (Jackie), while working through the procedures to become a foster mother.

Then the thing at 36% occurred and I can't actually continue saying what did or didn't happen.

One 'issue' that I had - I kept reminding myself, and feeling the need to remind myself, that the author is Canadian. Gave me certain breathing room in regards to certain issues that would pop up that I found . . . . odd, but I'd just let slip past (1: Sergeant Briggs is described as being from a long line of Generals and he really desires to become one himself eventually (but . . . but, he's a Sergeant! (there are such things as Mustangs - promoted to Officer side from enlisted side - not that such individuals have much luck raising all the way to General) - he's described as being old-ish (as in, even if he suddenly found himself doing that 'Mustang' thing, he doesn't have enough time to move up to General; 2: a fellow member of Taylor's team joins them in Iraq - he is described has having some family similarities to Briggs (as in long tradition of military service) which leads to - he's a recent graduate of West Point (which is where Briggs would expected to have gone instead of enlisting, especially with the help of the Generals background) . . . and . . . enlisted? West Point graduates officers not enlisted personnel; 3: the third one I can't mention because spoiler - ())). But it has been a while since I paid attention, so the Military might have radically changed since I last looked.

Onwards. I have forgotten how I worded it in my review for the prior book. Ah. 'This is a great book all the way around, and I kept having to wipe at my eyes while reading.' This issue continued with this book here.

Loved the book, despite some things I saw along the way, and some words I might have expressed. Great book.

Rating: 5+++

I have mixed feelings with this book. The author does a good job expressing the characters' feelings but on the other hand the story is bittersweet. It is a good book and people who love drama and difficult situations can enjoy it.

Collective detailed score: 3.5

The good:
- The books span about 15 years (more of you count the epilogue) so you really get a feel for our two leads and what draws them together

- I really love it when letters are used (well) as a story telling device and they’re used to great effect in these books

- really readable. I was glad I started reading these at the start of a long weekend as they’re long and I didn’t want to stop

The hmmmm:

- soooo much angst and trauma. It’s hard to say more without spoilers. But imho it was laid on a bit thick.

The grumph:

- really needs a good proof read and a good edit. There are multiple typos and multiple instances of difficult to follow head hopping.

- another review I read commented on the character descriptors used. Constant use of ‘the black woman’ and ‘the soldier’ got really jarring

- children are too cutesy and the language/behaviour doesn’t match their ages

- the secondary characters don’t grow. There are a lot of secondary characters and, with 15 years and a high word count to play with there was room to develop them more than they were. None of them form relationships of their own or mature at all

Overall: I’m frustrated because these books were good - and in the reach of great - but just fall short. Worth the time investment if you have KU but I probably wouldn’t shell out for them unless uber angst is your jam.

I loved this book more than the previous book, Dear Taylor. Most of the story is told through letters, maybe more than the first. I can't say more without spoiling. Just read the book. If you liked the first, you'll like if not love this one. PS. Have tissues nearby.

No Words

I'm not ashamed to admit, I cried throughout this entire book. I absolutely loved Dear Taylor and was waiting in anticipation for Sincerely Daniella. I'm not going in to specifics about the book because I don't want to ruin anything for others readers, but wow. Eija, you have a gift that reaches the reader's soul. Keep doing your thing because you are an amazing writer and I can't wait to read what else you have in store in the future.

6 stars. I cannot stop crying. They’re happy tears now but for majority of this book I was just in agony. This was such a beautiful and extremely emotional read. I love Daniella and Taylor and their little family so much. Their love for each other is amazing to see.

There’s so much that poor Taylor has gone through in this book that my heart was just aching for her. It got to be too intense at times but it made that HEA for her and Daniella all the more rewarding. They both deserved nothing but happiness. I sobbed while reading the epilogue and I didn’t want the book to be over. I loved the themes of this book. Grief, found family, fostering and adopting, sexual assault of women in the military, different types of PTSD. It was all handled so well with and with a lot of care.

This was a beautiful read with a perfect ending. I am so glad that I’ve finally read these books because this one is definitely going to stick with me.

Couldn't put it down

1st thing I'm going to say is this is an AMAZING book! 2nd make sure you have Kleenex next to you, this is an amazing sequel to Dear Taylor. I literally couldn't put my phone down I had to finish reading this as soon as I started. It's an up and down roller coaster of emotions but it has a happy ending and is amazingly written. Another great job Eija

I can't believe I didn't write my review on this book, but I think I did it on amazon.com when I bought it.

I read this story when it was just a SQ fnfiction and I couldn't believe it turned into a book and not just 1, but 2! And it was an amazing story to read, it gave me the same rush of emotions as the original story. I loved how the author added more and change some parts of the original story, it gave so much more to the story and I loved the changes.

I read this book at work, while my kids took their nap and OMG I was crying in the middle of nap time that some times I had to stop reading for me to be able to not cry.

If you haven't read the books and you want some mild angs lesbian romance, that includes the military and a long distance relationship, this is the book for you and please go buy the books!

so I actually rly liked it (both books in the series) and would have usually rated it 4 stars.. reasons why not see below:

it's a rly cute love story and a lot of fluff when they were actually together but I am missing a little bit of chemistry and passion between the 2 MCs and the entire story overall was very PG.. (although it touched a few very heavy topics..)

but I'd recommend the book to anyone who wants to read a story about military long distance relationships during a time DADT was still in place..

One of THE most intense books I have ever read. At times it was even almost emotionally draining, but kind of like in a good way? This is like an angst masterpiece. And I live!

Wow!!

I do not even know what to say. Well it is nearly two in the morning but that is not the reason. These books are so special how does someone even know how to write like this. I am so happy to have bought these books. I so did not want them to end. No spoilers I hate that the outline of the story will give you and idea of what you are going to be read about. What it will not tell you is that you are about to start reading one of the best books ever. There is so much to love about these books I am going to read them for a long time just in case I missed something. Thank you very much to the author i will watch out for all books you write in the future you are awesome.

Excellent

This is an excellent story, a must read, one you'll never forget. The sequel of Dear Taylor, made me cry, moved my emotions and touched my heart. It's romantically sad, pure and filled with hope. Daniella and Taylor are meant to be together, the kind of love we dream, the one that last forever. Jackie is a charmer, a little girl that shines through. I really, really cried but I enjoyed til the last page. Well done Eija Jimenez!!!!!!! Bravissimo!!!!!

It doesn't happen very often but every now and again, when I'm at my luckiest, I run across a story line that has everything (or very nearly everything) I look for in a good read. This book definitely fits that bill. I really have no words other than I greatly look forward to future works by Eija Jimenez. So far she has gotten two 5 star ratings out of me, which is not an easy feat. Only complaint I have is the lack of editing.

I loved this book.

I loved Sincerely Daniella. Beautifully written. Excellent story. I knew the other shoe was going to drop as far as a problem with Taylor's deployment overseas. But I didn't know when. I was afraid to turn each page. Waiting for their world to crumble. Great book.

I loved this book! I couldn’t put it down once I started reading. This was the perfect continuation of the story. The characters are so rich and the storyline has just the right amount of drama. I definitely cried some, I loved the parts where the story is told through letters.

Dear Taylor and Sincerely Daniella are two books meant to be read together.

This is a story of two women who find love through a penpal program for soldiers in the army. The books also occur during a time when don’t ask-don’t tell was still in effect for the US military.

Daniella Melo is a history teacher who signs her class up for the penpal program but after handing out names to each student, she ends up with one extra name, that of Private Taylor Phillips. So she takes it upon herself to write to that soldier. As they become acquainted via letters, eventually Taylor gets to go to Rhode Island to meet and spend time with Daniella and her daughter, Jacqueline, aka Jackie.

It is through these opportunities to meet that romance grows.

But in book two, Sincerely Daniella, Daniella receives the heartbreaking news that Taylor is a casualty of war. Taylor’s former sergeant, Rick, holds out hope because Taylor’s body was never recovered, but Daniella begins to see a therapist to deal with her grief at the loss of the woman she had grown to love.

So the second book is Daniella writing letters to Taylor, just to put into words everything she’s felt due to this loss, and how she finally comes to accept the loss of Taylor from her life.

These books touch on love, loss, homophobia, attempted rape, wartime violence, grief, PTSD, and more. This isn’t the easiest read but I still loved both of these books.

I usually have a “next 3-5 tbr book” plan in place. That went out the window after finishing Dear Taylor because without hesitation, I immediately started Sincerely, Daniella, the sequel to Dear T.

Both books tell the story of a growing relationship through correspondence between a high school teacher in Rhode Island and an American soldier overseas in Afghanistan and Iraq. It takes place immediately after 9/11, during the heaviest hostilities over there.

The sequel shows a marked level of improvement in the author’s writing. The narrative is tighter and the scenes are so much more descriptive. The twists are just heart wrenching and I almost quit after 1/3 of the book because I was heartbroken. But the love and determination on the part of Taylor’s new family was worth seeing. Also, the strength of character showed by Taylor, in her own words, “a gay, black female soldier,” in a homophobic military and foreign country, was most definitely worth my time.

Although there was an epilogue, I really feel that the author could write a book 3 to expand on what happened later on because I’m sure there are still important details and struggles left out. Loved both books but you definitely have to read both.

Spoilers! You've been warned!
Actual rating 3.25 stars but I have rounded up to 4 because it's well written and sweet. However, this sequel has a few things in it I really don't enjoy.
Number one of these is the fake-out death. This is aggravating. It's a romance so you are fairly sure the love interest isn't dead. Having Taylor announced as dead, but not recovered by the army was weird and annoying. Officially she was MIA? But considers a casualty of war.
Also, having Taylor wait a huge amount of time to contact daniella caused the type of conflict in a book that I skip through. It would have been better, in my opinion, to have Taylor contact everyone but perhaps refuse to see them until better.
The glimpse into the future epilogue that I usually don't enjoy worked well here for me. I can't explain why. Perhaps because the entire story was well paced, never rushed and spanned around 5? Years.
So 4 stars remains my final rating as I feel a little harsh downgrading due to personal dislikes in a well written story.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Just got me in all the feels!!!

“Loving someone was a huge responsibility. Holding a heart in your hand, it would be so easy to stumble and fall.”

“Now Daniella was left to pick up the pieces of a life that for the past four years had been firmly stitched together with Taylor’s.”
+ • + • + • +

It made me smile, made me cry, made my heart ache & made me optimistic riding the emotional rollercoaster from the first word to the last about finding & forging the redemption & resilience, security, strength, promise & power of real love

Seriously, how incredible is a book that has a simplistically poetic yet still with such titillating complexities as a line like that—how could this book be anything but incredible!!!

An emotional & entertaining story with characters that become so authentic they truly become like real people in your mind & a riveting plot lines that draws you in so effortlessly & subtly without you even noticing.

First off, if you have not read Book 1, do so now! I have never had a book that had me so close to tears. There is drama and suspense, twists and turns…and they will have you grabbing anything that is within reach. This continues the building friendship between Taylor and Daniella from Book 1. Jimenez has created a work of art…in my humble opinion. As I read her dialogue, I could hear the different voices of her characters flowing with the nuances of the sentiments of the situations. The author’s words had me feeling what the characters were feeling during the scenes. I even found myself shouting out at one particular scene, “You have got to be kidding me? Are you serious?”
So seriously, get on this and read it to the end. You will be glad you did. I love her ability to create such an engrossing, dramatic, romantic, and thoroughly entertaining story. She smacked me in the face, knocked me off my feet and picked me back up again.

The structure of this book was immaculate! I must admit as a reader I was on the verge of explicit foul language and reacting hardly but since the ending resolved happily, at the very end, mind you…I’m satisfied! This book will most definitely be saved and noted for future reference as someone who is planning on going to the military as a an officer in the near future! This book gives perspective as to the officer I want to be for my soldiers and what I need to do to ensure their safety especially for those that look like me! I commend you Author (Mrs. Jimenez) for broaching these topics like mental illness and atrocious leadership (of all things) as well as including people of color in your books especially a black woman! This book took place during the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell time period so I hope things are better when I go in! I digress bravo Author!

I just couldn't believe Taylor was dead after Daniella got the news. Her crew left her behind, her body never found. Miss Jimenez captured the pain of losing a loved one just right in her descriptive of showing and not telling Daniella's grief. Seeing the family come apart emotionally and come back together.
Taylor's description of pain, torture (just enough to get the pain), and mental collapse was heartbreaking to read.
I would have liked to read about legal ramifications for Sgt Briggs. But it's not my book.
Read it and see redemption and recovery.
I enjoyed both books.

AWESOME

The two books in this series are so good, that as soon as you finish Dear Taylor, you best have Sincerely,Daniela on hand. I cried so much while reading both of these books that I tried to sleep, and could not. I had to pick the book back up and keep reading to find the next twist. When Dani finally realized "mommy" means someone other than her, I broke down with great big alligator tears. WOW is all I can say. AWESOME READ!!!!

My God did I CRY! Honestly this book really is such a lovely story. I am so glad that I had the absolute privilege of reading it again. I wish goodreads had a .5 rating system as this book is a 4.5. I rate almost every book I enjoy as 5/5. Am I too easily impressed by literature, or do I just read a lot of good books? Anyway, I have really enjoyed this story and it now has a forever home on my bookshelf.
Oh screw it... 5/5

I loved this story from book 1 where we get the connections between the hard core soldier and great teacher who is just doing a good example for her students and too scared of pain. They cross this bridge and we fall for Dani, the teacher who falls for the soldier who has always had a bad life, but works hard and loves her dearly. I want this series to go on forever!,

What a Love Story!!

Although I had my reservations about reading this book ( anything military is not really my thing), I was pleasantly surprised. The mc's were well described & they fit well together. Not much for any sex scenes but, the love & passion could be felt. Both books are a Must Read! I will be following this author!
