Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.
Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.
We have all heard about these stories, seen early Hollywood productions about them and even today these books are being filmed with modern perspectives. Amazingly they still fascinate! I remember picking the first book from my school library with a picture of big hound on it and getting completely immersed into it; and the same happened again when I picked it up- that is the charm of this book.
I also remember how i was pulled into watching my first web-series by my dearest friend with Benedict and Freeman duo leading as Sherlock and Watson and what a fabulous watch it was :-) This is the beauty of Sir Doyle's creation; it can still thrill people after 133 years since the first official publication happened in 1887!
Go for the book if you have missed it; a must read for all age group.
I have always loved Sherlock Holmes and had read most of these stories before. By the end the stories felt more formulaic and I didn't appreciate his genius as much but I think I should have just spaced reading the stories out a bit more.
It has been raining here in California for the last month. This is the perfect book to pickup and read for a few hours of enjoyment then put down and come back to it later. Fun and entertaining without being to deep. Sherlock definitely has his flaws but it makes you appreciated his strengths.
