This is a difficult review to write. Normally I leave "fan fiction" alone. After all, it is the work of amateurs, they are not official publications, even though nowadays everyone can easily get their own ebook published. But "Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis" by Dale Dassel is based on the point-and-click computer adventure game of the same name by LucasArts Games in the 90s, and it is so brilliantly written that the man should actually get a contract from Disney to officially release this manuscript on the market.
The book largely follows the story of the game, but of course has some gaps to fill and things to explain to make it all a bit more realistic. Here and there things are completely different from what fans of the game will remember, and unfortunately a few locations (Monte Carlo and Santorini) and one important character (Alain Trottier) do not make an appearance at all.
The most difficult thing seemed to me to write a story that combines the best of the three ways to play the game. In the game, at a certain point you can choose which "path" you want to follow. You can choose between more action (extra fist fights), more puzzles (extra thinking) or you can form a team with Sophia Hapgood (extra dialogues). Dassel also had to make choices, but the result is certainly worth it.
There were a few things that I questioned. For example, I am not sure whether German submarines have windows, and whether it was already common knowledge in 1939 that there were concentration camps with gas chambers. There is also a strange scene between Sophia and a lesbian SS'er. But for the rest I admire the research that Dassel has done, with both historical and geographical background information for each location that Indy travels to. When I read in his afterword that he also contacted Rob McGregor, the writer of seven official Indy books, I am really impressed. Dassel does not earn anything from it: the pdf of the book can be found online for free, and he clearly refers to all the source material.

Signed up just to rate this incredible labor of love. I feel like I should've paid good money for this quality of a read. Really thankful to Dale for the amazing effort put forth.

Οκ, ας ξεκαθαρίσουμε κάτι για αρχή. Το βιβλίο δεν έχει εκδοθεί επίσημα και το έχει γράψει ερασιτέχνης συγγραφέας. Παρόλα αυτά, εγώ το αντιμετώπισα όπως κάθε άλλο βιβλίο που αγοράζω και διαβάζω. Γι' αυτό και τα 3 αστεράκια και όχι τα 5 που θα έβαζα αν λάμβανα υπόψιν μου ότι δεν πρόκειται για επαγγελματία συγγραφέα.
Επί του θέματος τώρα. Για όσους δεν το ξέρουν ήδη, το βιβλίο βασίζεται στο ομώνυμο παιχνίδι PC που κυκλοφόρησε στις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 1990. Αν, όντως, υπάρχει κάποιος που δεν το γνώριζε αυτό, ας πάει να διαβάσει την περίληψη του βιβλίου, διότι δε θα ασχοληθώ άλλο με τέτοιες περιγραφές. Να πω εδώ ότι είμαι τρελός φαν του παιχνιδιού, το οποίο το θεωρώ ίσως το καλύτερο PC game που έχω παίξει ποτέ. Απίστευτη ιστορία, τρεις παραλλαγές σχετικά με το πώς θα εξελιχθεί η ιστορία με βάση τις επιλογές που κάνει ο χρήστης, πανέξυπνοι διάλογοι και φυσικά Indiana Jones. Όταν πρωτοέπαιξα το παιχνίδι ήταν σε έναν IBM 286 και δεν είχε καν ήχους πάρα μόνο εκείνη τη μυστήρια μουσική που έβγαινε από τα έγκατα του υπολογιστή λες και κουνιόταν η motherboard η ίδια. Παρόλα αυτά, ένιωθα ότι ο Harrison Ford ζούσε μέσα στο υπολογιστή μου! Τόση ζωντάνια! Επίσης, θυμάμαι τον εαυτό μου (παιδί δημοτικού τότε) να ψάχνει απεγνωσμένα σχεδόν σε κάθε διάλογο τις άγνωστες λέξεις με ένα λεξικό στο χέρι, μπας και βγάλω νόημα και καταλάβω τι πρέπει να κάνω για να πάω παρακάτω. Και πόσο εκνευριζόμουν που ο μεγαλύτερος αδελφός μου δε μου έλεγε τις λύσεις στους γρίφους παρά μόνο όταν ερχόμουν στα πρόθυρα της τρέλας...
Γιατί τα γράφω όλα αυτά;; Γιατί το βιβλίο μού ξύπνησε όλες αυτές τις αναμνήσεις σε τεράστιο βαθμό. Όσοι έχετε παίξει το παιχνίδι, απλά το μυαλό σας θα γεμίσει με εκείνες τις εικόνες του παιχνιδιού. Έχει καταφέρει ο συγγραφέας να πιάσει αυτό το αίσθημα και σχεδόν ακούς στο μυαλό σου το κλικ του ποντικιού επιλέγοντας την απάντηση που θα δώσει ο Indy όταν έρχεται σε επαφή με άλλους χαρακτήρες του βιβλίου.
Παρόλα αυτά, δυσκολεύτηκα να το τελειώσω! Για κάποιον λόγο ένιωσα ότι δεν είναι ευανάγνωστο, ότι χρειάζεται προσπάθεια να πάω παρακάτω και προς το τέλος ένιωσα ότι τραβάει πάρα πολύ... Απογοητεύτηκα σε μεγάλο βαθμό, αλλά συμπεραίνω ότι αυτό οφείλεται στο ότι το παιχνίδι με έχει επηρεάσει σε τεράστιο βαθμό και επίσης ότι δεν είχα ποτέ στο μυαλό μου ότι δε γράφτηκε από επαγγελματία συγγραφέα.
Σε ποιους θα αρέσει: Στους φαν του PC παιχνιδιού. Και μόνο. Ξεκάθαρα.
Σε ποιους δε θα αρέσει: Σε εκείνους που περιμένουν μία επαγγελματική προσέγγιση σε μία πολύ ωραία ιστορία με βάση τις ταινίες του Indiana Jones. Σε εκείνους που θεωρούν δεδομένο ότι το βιβλίο είναι ευανάγνωστο και γυρνάς σελίδες χωρίς να κοπιάσεις. Και σε εκείνους που δεν έχουν παίξει καν το παιχνίδι. Έτσι απλά!
Θα το διάβαζα ξανά; Όχι! Θα έπαιζα ξανά το παιχνίδι; Εννοείται!!!
