Bill Nye the Science Guy meets The Magic School Bus!
This is the first book in a new STEM-based picture book series from the Emmy Award-winning host of PBS’s Design Squad and Design Squad Nation, Nate Ball. With a lively cast of characters and vibrant illustrations by Wes Hargis, it's an adventure in learning! This nonfiction picture book is an excellent choice to share during homeschooling, in particular for children ages 4 to 6. It’s a fun way to learn to read and as a supplement for activity books for children.
Ever wonder where water comes from and where it goes? Or why sometimes it rains and sometimes it snows? Then join Nate Ball and his crack team of curious scientists as they shrink down smaller than a raindrop to see firsthand what the water cycle is all about.
Very similar to the Magic School Bus nonfiction picture books with a teacher and students who regularly make commentary and contribute facts in the form of essays and projects, this fantastic book features the water cycle and everything about it! Filled with fun and facts that will get kids interested and learning!
Ball, Nate. Let’s Investigate with Nate: The Water Cycle, illustrated by Wes Hargis. Harper, 2017. $17.99. Content: G. PICTURE BOOK. Before the Science Museum opens on Saturdays a group of kids goes on scientific adventures with scientist Nate Ball. Today they learned about the water cycle and all things liquid. What happens to very hot water? It boils. What happens to very cold water? It freezes. What is half of your body made of? Water. The story is littered with interesting questions and fun facts. They start their journey in the clouds where they learn about molecules. Rain becomes puddles, puddles becomes a stream, and a stream can lead to a lake. Estuaries, evaporation, snowflakes, ground water, and subterranean rivers are also covered. A hands-on science experiment: Make Your Own Cloud completed with instructions and suggested observations. The book also includes a very helpful glossary of the terms used. Recommend to fans of The Magic School Bus.
In LET'S INVESTIGATE WITH NATE, the doors of the Science Museum become a portal to another world, but only an hour before the museum opens on Saturdays. On this adventure, Nate is going to teach Wendy, Braden, Felix, and Rosa all about the water cycle.
The four of them are each given a question to answer at the end of their trip. What kind of water lives in the sky? What causes evaporation? What causes water droplets to form in the air? When is a river hidden from the sky?
This was an informative book that makes science and learning about the water cycle fun. There's also an experiment to make your own cloud at home in the back of the book, along with a glossary. This was an interesting way to approach science and I loved the illustrations.
Final Verdict: I thought this was the perfect book that teaches about science, but is entertaining and will hold a child's attention at the same time. I would recommend this to children who love science, adventures, THE MAGIC SCHOOL BUS, or lust like to learn new things.
The story is clever. I like how Nate gives readers a chance to answer questions right away so that they feel part of the story. Using daily activities as ways to help kids understand concepts (e.g., cycle = laundry) is a great idea. Braden's journal is a consistent feature for introducing science vocabulary.
I learn a lot kownledge about water cycle. I also learn some new words like evaporation, snowflakes and yee-haw! I recommend this book to everyone who likes sciences.
