After getting captured by her father’s usurpers, Princess Arienne is imprisoned in her own castle. As the day of her execution draws near, she needs help. She needs her sister.

In the real world, pop superstar Zena Carradine has little interest in virtual reality. When her sister begs her to enter “The Darker Ages,” she has her doubts. However, Zena is swept away by Arienne’s world... until she realizes she’s the wife of a twisted king.

Meanwhile, the real world identities of several characters are revealed, including the pompous Prince Jonah.

The Darker Ages 2: Rebirth is a historical fantasy set in a virtual world. To fully enjoy the story, reading the previous novel is recommended.

I'm a rather reclusive author living in Ohio with four cats.
I write super fluffy fluff and darkest grim grimdark. "This author has a strange imagination" was my favorite compliment ever. I hope my strange imagination entertains someone out there!

4.5 stars, rounding up.

If you're looking at this series for younger ones, shy away. This novel is where the Darker Ages gets its Darker adjective. Things get much more serious, more violent, and more dangerous to our favorite characters.

If you're ok with that, this novel is a fun story that mixes well between the real world and the virtual world. We get to go into each character in a new way, learning more about their real life back stories as well as how their characters came to be. And we learn more about characters that were in the background in the first novel, like Zena (and her love life, which is practically a character of its own :-O ).

I liked how the author tested the characters in different ways to bend and shape the characters. While I really wished ... ... I understand Aron has to leave something for book three!

While the violence to the limits in certain situations bothered me a tad (hence the half star off), I thought the book was well written and continues to be a great example of diversity in ability, gender, sexual orientation, race, age, and career. I wish more authors in this genre would take such efforts to make their characters accessible like this!

Alfred Du Bois is absolutely hilarious. I mean, oh my god, I'm wheezing. Why do I want to mark every single line that comes out of his mouth? Usually, I don't like multiple POVs, but heck, these books are just built for it.

I thought Jonah was a spoiled brat, but it explains his character more, though it's still astonishing. Honestly, I've grown quite fond of him, and I really hope he makes it through. And I can't help but wonder: What's become of Jonathan?

The story continues and it turns very dark as Arienne is captured by her father's killers and usurpers, and imprisoned in the dungeon to be executed. The day draws near and she fears for her life, a life she cannot lose since the one in the real world was hardly worth living, so she resorts to asking her sister for help. However Zena Carradine is self centred, rich and very spoilt and loves her life in the real world, but for her sister she finally accepts to enter into the game and finds out she is the wife of the tyrannical King Rufus Swain who is disgusting. In this book we often take trips into the dungeon as James Bain enjoys torturing his brother mercilessly as well as other prisoners, he is a real sadist and very twisted. We also get to know more about our characters in the real world and all of them are so different to the characters they have chosen to portray. The surprises keep on coming, also many of them are using trackers which are illegal, and giving each other hints as to what is happening in the Dark Ages so sometimes they get a tip and a helping hand. Alfred Du Bois is my favourite character even though he is a murderer, a pirate and a traitor and usually looks out only for himself, however this time round he sticks his neck out for Arienne, or does he? He definitely can be a charmer and seem like a hero when he wants to be, and she is adamant she would save him from execution as he did her, but can she do this? Or is this the end for our daring, but charming bastard! I am so into this series, as I love dark fantasy with a touch of romance and love the virtual reality scenario too, so am off to start reading book 3!
