Whether we realize it or not, the words we use dictate and control our lives. The persistent messages we repeat can frame our thoughts and trap us into a mind-set that is difficult to break. This mind-set often manifests itself with statements like "I can’t," "I’m not good enough," and "I’ll never find the [insert the blank] I want." Many times, we don’t stop to consider the profound impact that these negative, limiting words have on our mentality, life choices, and the path of possibility that we manifest. After gathering years of research and personal experience with how words affect individuals mentally and emotionally, business owner and communications specialist Mary Shores realized that there is a life-changing theme persistent throughout ancient traditions and spiritual foundations that is supported by scientific professionals. This book is incredibly empowering and FULL of practical and useable ideas. I can't recommend it highly enough!! I'm a big self-help reader and I found this book different to so much of what is out there. The ideas presented are always grounded with real examples and exercises that help them really becoming meaningful and applicable. That is what sets this book apart in the self-help space. If you're looking for a self-help book that will actually change the way you look at things and show up in your life, don't go past this one. Great read!!
The book includes some great activities and thought provoking questions throughout. However, the rest of the book (a large majority of it) felt like pure filler.
I started reading the ebook but then knew it was one I wanted on my bookshelf IRL. Now it is dogeared and flagged and highlighted to within an inch of its life. It's one of those self-help books where you write on the blank pages, just to remind yourself of the top tips you never want to forget.
Mary Shores is the CEO of a collection agency. You'd think that would be a pretty negative job, but she developed a system of positive interaction (Conscious Communications) to keep her staff and her customers happy. 99% of it resonated with me.
Okay, caveats: probably none of this is new. Some things in the book, very few, fell flat for me. For example, I don't believe "this is a universe where there are no accidents," and Ann Cuddy's posture-affects-physiology research, which Shores quotes in one small place, has been disproved.
Self-help books are extremely personal. But for me, this book has been motivating and comforting. It's great to feel as if I have some small amount of control over my life. Maybe I knew some of her ideas already, but if Mary Shore's book only serves as a reminder, good enough. Every morning, I re-read a half-dozen highlights to set me on a positive path for the day. This is a change in behavior, as I formerly would drink my morning coffee, open my laptop, and stick my head in the toilet of national and political news. But then I had a big life challenge, and I needed the strength of positive influences. Along came this book.
Here are a few tips I review each morning, and yes, Shores does give credit to such people as Tony Robbins when she uses their ideas.
*the power of now *what you focus on, grows *always know your outcome *self-care keeps you strong *the power of RAS (Reticular Activation System) *affirmations, self-talk *your origin story matters---but it doesn't *keep your vessel clean / cleanse, not clog etc.
Like I said, self-improvement books are very personal, but this one resonated for me, and it's helping me stay strong during a difficult period in my life. I'm glad I found it.
If you are into self help this book is an excellent resource of quotes and science to back up how we have the ability to change our lives through handling our emotions. The author dives deep into the biology and chemistry and make up of our minds and bodies that really makes her approach of changing your emotions doable! You can be the captain of your own emotional ship!
I loved this book. I appreciated the insight into how we develop mental habits and more importantly how to change them. I really appreciated the author’s research and sharing of specific facts like how long it takes to establish a new habit. At the same time she used vivid and true observations like’ you can’t clean your house without seeing the dirt’. Catchy and vivid terms like ‘clog’ and ‘cleanse’ made it easy to visualize behaviors as being good or bad. The language the author used was very powerful and easy to understand like ‘reframing our attachment to memories’ by identifying how the traumatic event strengthened us. This approach is an effective vaccination against becoming a victim. I appreciated the constructive admonishments to ‘stop telling stories from your past that do not help you’. I felt like the author was speaking to me, which I really appreciated—particularly when she charged me to do something constructive and/or insightful. In summary, I am incredibly grateful for this book because it helped me discover and accept myself and importantly, gave me strategies like creating my own affirmations to keep growing.

I am so grateful that Mary has shared her philosophy with the world via Conscious Communications. Mary Shores took the time to understand what she was writing about. She has researched and studied for years. Not only had she done that but she has applied her concepts to her own life to show the reader that there is more to it than just fanciful thinking. I have always known that words matter but I did not understand how much until I started putting these concepts into place. Conscious Communications moves thoughtfully from chapter to chapter and does not leave you hanging wondering 'now what'. Instead each chapter builds on the last until the end and you are chomping at the bit to get going on your one page action plan. I am different now. I understand why the dream is only the first step.
Mary puts all of the pieces together to turn wishful thinking into reality.
I love this book! Every chapter has an exercise at the end so you can immediately put to work in your life what you just learned, the personal stories are so genuine, and I really feel empowered and uplifted. Conscious Communications has helped me start communicating with myself like I used to.
I've always felt like people were talking over my head, but now I really understand personal development in a way I never have. This book is full of common sense (I'm almost embarrassed at the things I was missing right in front of my nose!) Mary's lessons are practical and easy to follow. 100% would recommend this book to everyone.
A few good nuggets. Top takeaways: The nervous system stores our past traumas and we tend to be reactive! Our feelings determine so much about how we experience our life so we search for the ability to change the way we feel. * ALWAYS KNOW YOUR OUTCOME. * WHAT YOU FOCUS ON GROWS. We have roughly 60k thoughts a day and 95% are the same as yesterday. Happiness Training: 1. Train your FOCUS. 2. Stop retelling old STORIES. 3. Get control of the CHEMICAL RECIPES.
it has alot of new age teachings such as manifesting, but I still appreciate the author's ability to breakdown emotional and neurological concepts into layman's terms. Mary Shores is a determined go getter and her drive inspired me to work harder at my goals. this book helped me believe that I can still honor God with my career of choice when I originally didn't think it was possible.
