Esther Williams Sanchez is busy living her life the way she’s always done. Spending time with her pets, working as a divorce mediator, and enjoying her newly renovated cottage on the beach.
She’s also decided it’s high time she learn how to swim to prepare for an upcoming cruise. It’s time to let go of a horrible past experience and take some lessons. So at thirty-two, Esther enrolls in the only class at the Y with a spot left. A Mommy and Me class—which seems quite tame, considering her oldest classmate aside from her is three-years-old.
Learn to swim with a bunch of babies and toddlers? Easy-squeezy, right? Er, no. As Esther leaves the pool after her very first lesson, she sprouts a magnificent tail and fins. Oh, and hair the color of a rainbow. Lots and lots of luscious hair.
Lucky for her, the OOPS girls are on site, and as they set about finding out how this happened to Esther, they run into a hunky Australian merman named Tucker Pearson who happens to be the key to Esther’s problem. But Tucker has problems of his own, and they include being kicked out of his family’s bottled water company, booted from his pod, and accused of embezzling over a million bucks.

I jumped right in the middle of this series to listen to this one for a challenge LOL Have no fear though, I was quick to catch on and loved the OOPS girls! I will be going back to the beginning and listening to all these in the near future.
Esther did a good job of accidentally turning into a mermaid in stride. She had a brief moment of panic and then accepted it and moved on. Tuck was just as surprised as Esther about her turning, since he didn't mean to change her. The mystery was great, and I was surprised by who the "bad guy" was :)
Going in to this, I wasn't too sure what to expect.
See, I haven't read any of the other books in the series. I saw the title and premise of this one and was immediately hooked (er, no pun intended) and decided to give it a shot. Initially, I was worried I would be terribly lost and that nothing would make sense.
To my surprise, it was actually quite easy to follow along. Sure, I didn't know the OOPS team that well, and a lot of references to their past adventures, history, and current situations was indeed lost on me, but the story as a whole was generally self-contained. I was able to pick up on the differences between the characters, and the general plot itself involving Esther and Tucker was it's own thing.
And I'm glad I gave it a shot, because it was a very entertaining read.
Esther finds herself turned into a mermaid after a swim class - she's an adult taking a class with kids because she never learned how and she's terrified of water - and contacts the OOPS team to come and offer her help out of desperation and nowhere else to turn. They come and things quickly get complicated as they start to look into how and why Esther transformed, as well as how her Uncle's death might be a factor in what's going on.
Now, coming into a series in it's sixteenth installment means of course I'm going to be a bit lost, but the fact that I was able to follow along as well as I did is a testament to the author's skill. Yeah, there were a few sentences here and there that weren't formatted properly and a misspelling or two, but I have to give Dakota a lot of credit for making something that a newcomer like myself can enjoy. I find myself wanting to check out a few more books in the series because of this.
It wasn't perfect by any means. I liked the plot in general, but I was a bit surprised when it felt like it wrapped up very quickly. According to my Kindle, I was only about 80% of the way through when I reached the end - turns out the rest of it was previews for other works and a preview of another author's book. That in of itself doesn't bug me at all, but I do wish that there had been a little more time spent in the main book wrapping things up. It felt like the mystery of what was going on came to a head a little too fast, and the reveal of who the villain was felt kind of out of left field. I was also hoping to see more of the mermaid society and meet more of the mermaids and mermen living at the lake, but I can understand that it might've slowed the plot down too much.
I liked the extended cast. Darnell was a treat, and I definitely liked the three main OOPS girls. I like that the focus of the series seems to be on the victims they help, with their own stuff mixed in as it goes. That lets you build a narrative across the series while also making standalone plots, which is pretty clever.
Nina was definitely one of the highlights for me. She's crass and she doesn't hold her opinions back, but she was also one of the more caring and empathetic characters in the book. She won me over pretty fast, though initially I thought she was going to be the one that annoyed me the most - shows what I know.
All in all, this was a treat to read. I enjoy mermaid fiction and this was a creative premise. I liked how the transformation worked and how the society of mermaids/mermen functioned. I can safely recommend this one to mermaid fans, even if you haven't checked out the rest of the series!
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall 4 Narration 4 Story 4
This is the first I’ve read in this series – and aside from a bit of backstory and references to the OOPS team (Nina, Wanda and Marty and their “organization” that helps those who suddenly, and accidentally, are introduced to the paranormal world) and their beginnings weren’t detailed, but their intentions (and personalities) are clear and easy to see. But this story is about Esther(Willams Sanchez), a divorce mediator who’s decided that it’s time to learn to swim (after all these years) since she’s got a getaway cruise booked. The only class left is a Mommy & Me swim class, the perfect option to slowly start to deal with her water phobia if she can ignore the fact that the oldest other ‘student’ is just three years old. She’s not given much time to overcome her fear of water when, as the class ends, she is flopping about the pool deck, with a tail where her legs used to be and a glorious multi-hued head of hair.
Fortunately, the OOPS team was handy – there to help Ester through the changes and shock – and discover that her Uncle’s death – a mystery, just may hold the clue to why she was transformed. When Tucker, a VP of a water company and merman himself, meets Esther, there are sparks and more, as Tucker is determined to help her acclimate. Things aren’t all without difficulty for Tuck though, he’s been accused of embezzlement and tossed from both the company and his family group – and it just may be that he’s got the key to just why Esther has changed so dramatically.
Such fun and snark with a good helping of mystery and clues that have everyone jumping to different conclusions, following traces and trails to sort out Esther’s Uncle’s death, discover if Tuck really did take that money, and see if they can’t determine just what is behind Esther’s change. A snarky and sweary Nina quickly shows her deep empathy for those “caught by surprise’ with their accidental transformations, while the heavily pregnant Wendy provides that calming influence that Esther so needs. Marty was a bit of a pill in this – but that difficulty seems to work as a solid foil for the laughter, pure fun and delicious mystery here.
Narration is provided by Hollie Jackson, and she’s got a solid handle on the shock, questions and uncertainties that hammer Esther early on, with the ‘been there it will all work out’ sort of worldliness from Nina, Wanda and Marty. Tuck was also clearly present, a decent Aussie accent appeared and brought his character forward, and Jackson never stepped over or on the conversations, allowing each character to present themselves in ways that felt natural and considered their personalities, the stress of the moment, and the multitude of questions in this clever paranormal romance-laced mystery.
I received an AudioBook copy of the title from Tantor Audio for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
Book 16 of the series. Can stand alone if you like funny paranormal romances. I’ve only read the first 7 several years ago, but enjoyed this visit back to Nina, Marty and their wacky world. Fair warning, if you don’t enjoy sarcasm and lots of swearing, avoid this series. I think it’s blatantly funny, but it’s not for everyone.
A paranormal accident, aka someone is made into a paranormal being, is the theme. The best glue of these stories is the friendships and families that are built. Heart warming.
Excerpt: “As Esther flopped to the ground with a thud that shook her small house, attempting to get at him by wiggling her way along the floor like some mermaid’s imitation of the worm, knocking over everything in her path, Tuck winced with remorse. Thankful the women intervened, he tried not to panic. But man, had he really f’ed up. He’d been so intent on getting a word with Esther about her uncle, he hadn’t been thinking clearly. Her uncle was the only tie he had to help him out of the dodgy mess he was in. Yet, when he’d seen her in all her mahogany-haired, olive-skinned, generously curved, crimson-lipped glory at her uncle’s funeral, he’d fumbled like a guppy at his first reef dance. Quite literally, she’d stolen the breath from his bloody lungs, and he hadn’t been lying about heightened emotions. Indeed, his emotions had been heightened, but as much of a sh$t as it made him feel like, it hadn’t been sadness that had fueled his reaction. It had been lust. Thick, murky, forbidden yet undeniable lust. She was a beautiful woman. A beautiful woman who, under normal circumstances, he’d have asked out without a moments hesitation.” Excerpt From The Accidental Mermaid by Dakota Cassidy This material may be protected by copyright.
This is my first “Accidental” book and I loved it! The author has created a story that quickly pulled me and had me wanting to know what was going to happen next. The story is entertaining and funny, I was left wanting more. The characters are intriguing, fun, some a little snarky, but all are likable. I can’t wait to read more of this series, I have a lot of catching up to do!
I received a copy of this book from the author, my review has been voluntarily submitted.
Dakota has done it again. I love love how she writes and this book didn't disappoint me. I can't be the only one who wanted to be a mermaid when I was young LOL. So love that so many of the previous characters show up in this book to help Esther with her journey to become a mermaid and love the chemistry between her and Tucker.
Nina, Wanda and Marty have helped some unusual people since the inception of O.O.P.S. Dragons, Vampires, Bears and Venues to make just a few and now it's the turn of the Merpeople. Esther Willams Martinez is attending a swimming lesson at the Mommy and me class (only place available) when she comes over all funny. She result Esther now has a tail and long sparkly coloured hair. Luckily Nina, Marty and Wanda are also attending the class with their children so Esther has all the help she could need to adjust to her new reality. Just one problem Nina and the rest of the gang have never come across a Mermaid ( didn't even know they existed) and have no idea what to do to help Esther even get rid of her tail which means smuggling her out the pool and into the back of an SUV by covering her in towels and some tarp. But getting her home is just the beginning they have to find out how this happened to Esther and knowing the way these things usually go there's bound to be a mystery and some danger involved too. Great series with wonderful characters.
Yet another rousing adventure for Marty, Nina, Wanda and the rest of the Accidental crew that we've grown to love and cherish. In Accidental Mermaid we meet the newest members of the OOPS extended family, Esther and Tucker. She's the accidental mermaid and he's the one well, I won't give that away. As with all the books in this series, we get to know each character and who they are. Esther is a perfect foil for Tucker. She's "cheeky" as he says in his Australian accent and follows that along with quips of his own. As the two figure out the wrench thrown into their lives, with the help of the OOPS crew, the two are drawn together. As always, we get the love, friendship and camaraderie that is all things OOPS and I cannot wait for what is next in the series.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinions. Hold on to your socks girls and boys this is one awesome ride. The Oops gang is on the case when they find a mermaid in the pool after mommy and me swim class. In this story we have an accidental mermaid Esther who is afraid of water ,a suicide that is looking more and more like murder and a Tuck handsome merman company vp who wants to help his little mermaid turn learn how to be one of them. Its up to Nina ,Marty a very pregnant and sleepy Wanda and the rest of the family to help Esther and Tuck get to the bottom of things. This was a rip roaring ,page turning, thrill ride of a read .I couldn't put it down until I read the last page. Two thumbs way up this is a 2017 must read.
ARC - I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest! How embarrassing for Esther! How does one explain how one turned into a mermaid in a kiddie pool ? She already had a phobia about swimming, and now this happens. She should not have left the house today, On top of that, there is something fishy going on w/ her uncle's death. The police said that it was suicide, but it start to look more like a murder. No worries ! Tucker + the OOPS girls are here to help. What could go wrong? Easy peasy. Loved the storytelling. Romance, comedy + suspense, all in 1 book.
Corny but fun. I haven't read the other books in the series, I bought this randomly because I searched for "mermaid" on audible and this was the only one that wasn't straight-up romance or for children, and it sounded goofy and fun (there IS a romance, but it's not the main plot). I felt like the characters unique to this book were fine, but the OOPS club characters themselves were kinda cringy and I couldn't get into them at all. I'm sure you appreciate them if you actually read the whole series (this is book 16), but for me they were more of a distraction from the main story and main characters.
I really liked Accidental Mermaid once I got into it. I had a difficult time getting into at first. I can’t really pinpoint why. Maybe I was having difficulty with the interactions of the different ladies at first. It did click and engage me after Tucker entered the house and meet Esther. Once all the characters seemed settled in, I quite enjoyed the cozy mystery. I loved the play on the water – romantically for mermaids as well as for the mystery. While this is a stand alone, you might do better to have read at least one previous.
Tucker and Ester are great characters in this, once again, amazing accidental from Dakota! Of course, Nina, Wanda, and Marty all make their appearances as well. I love the way Dakota gets us to the how in all her accidentals and this one was great! I don't want to give too much away but this is probably one of the most original explanations of becoming a mermaid I've read. I could not put this down!
Loved this episode so much. Nina stepping up as the settled and sane one is hilarious. Who actually did the crime will knock your socks off and meeting Ester and Tucker is a real treat. Thank you Dakota for adding my two favourites in on the periphery. Carl and Arch are delightful no matter how much line time they get. The big question is, What is Marty's problem???
Who doesn't love a good mermaids story? I love seeing Nina in every story. She just cracks me up. I was really hoping for a baby, but they don't always arrive when you want. I loved the way mermaids were portrayed. So magical and interesting with twists. The imagination of the mermaids world is so beautiful. I want my own lagoon! Can't wait to see what happens in the next book.
I've read all the books in this series and always look forward to the next one. This book about the mermaids was clever and crafty. The mystery aspect seemed hopeless at times and what an unexpected twist! I loved it. If you are as much a fan of this series as I am, you'll love it too. If you want to see what all the fuss is about, read the "Interview" book first then start at the top. You will not regret it! ⚓
I love the Accidental series by Dakota Cassidy. Each book is super funny and hot romance. The Accidental Mermaid is an excellent read and even though each book is a stand alone I encourage you to start with the 1st book in the series and go in order so you get to know the caracters, their personalities and their friendship. This isn't a necessity but I think it has made reading each book better and better.
I’ll admit I had no idea how the author was going to make this work but she did and gave us giggles along the way. The Accidental Mermaid is sweet, snarky, tongue in cheek fun. From our accidental mermaids name Esther Williams Sanchez to the fact she is afraid to swim to the unfortunate location of her accidental turning this book had me snickering into my tea. I thoroughly enjoyed.
I can't think of a book from this series that I haven't loved. Each character from Oops is someone I'd want in my life. I love the paranormal aspects and how each character still maintains his or her unique traits from book to book. Plus, Nina s cute nicknames for others are always a treat. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
3.5 stars. It was a fun, quick read. Nothing overly exciting, and I'm kind of sad that they didn't mention the partner in the end. I would have liked to have known they were included in the celebration of life. But I get why they weren't in the epilogue. I'm looking forward to seeing what's going on with Marty.
Man this is one of the best. It full of snark and the storyline always engaging. Nina is by far obe if my ulimate favorite characters, she is just plain awesome. Can not wait to read the next, UNICORNS? Thank you Dakota .
Way too many swears, felt like at least 10% of the dialogue was just swears, completely unnecessary. Other than that, I liked the friendship shown in the books and that Esther finally found a place of people to fit in with.
The accidental series is my second favorite of Dakota Cassidy's series of books. I love the framily that these mis-matched group of paranormal do Goodyear have accumulated. Esther & Tuck fit right in.
Mixed feelings but settling on 4 stars. I fell in love with this series because of the strong romances, but the last several have hardly any romance in them. Only reason giving this book 4 is because I liked the mystery. I plan to read the next even knowing I'll be supremely disappointed :/
Another exciting, fun read by the wonderful Dakota! Her books always make me laugh out loud, and warm my heart with the love her characters have for each other. Cant wait for the next accidental book!
I loved this book as I love all the books from this author! The accidental series is awesome! There is always mystery, excitement & romance! Best of all it’s like being apart of an unusual family! Can’t wait til I read the next book!
