The Kurtherian Gambit #9

It's Hell to Choose

Rate this book
The World is caught off guard by the sudden advances in technology, some are not happy about that at all.

Bethany Anne's group needs to move into production, who is she going to hire for that position?

Old enemies take a stronger stance at revenge than before.

Helping others is a tall order, but TQB Rises to the Occasion!

This is the second book in the second arc (books 08-14) for The Kurtherian Gambit. Now, the World is on Notice!

**Please note, as mentioned in another review, there is flagrantly foul language in this novel. The main character does not have a problem with cussing, just uninspired cussing.
If you haven't read the previous books, you will need to go back to #1 (the book does not explain the characters and previous relationships / deeds).

This series is way, way, way out there

The question this book raises is .... is he or isn't he dead? I hear you ask who? Sorry can't tell you. I'd be giving away too much and I know some who reads this are reading the series.

BA is now in space. They have an operational space station and are starting to mine the asteroid belt. Yeah, yeah I know. Far fetched you say. But that is the point. That's what's made this so damn addictive. It's like nothing I've experienced.

She also has the world's attention but they are so busy trying to out do each other and how to steal TQB's technology that no one has bothered to ask why? In the meantime TBQ continues to grow. Continues to prepare while the world leaders literally bicker. These supposedly highly intelligent leaders are so small minded that all they can see is a threat and how to bring it down.

In this book good people die. So it's not always the bad guys. But they do die. Rather spectacularly in my opinion. Also, only those who actually deserve to die do so. I got a bit emotional with this book because good people got killed and hurt. The funeral scene is very well done.

As I said before, not the best literature. But it's a hell of a story. Enjoy!

My new favorite book of the series. Everything comes together in this one. Enemies from all sides decide to take out the biggest baddest vamp in the universe. With that many enemies attacking at once, will everyone survive? This books was packed full with excitement and I loved every minute of it.
With so many great new books out this month, I have less time to read this series. But I will keep slowly getting through it because it still is too much fun to stop.

So. I have spent a good deal of time reading this series and I think it was #8 where I thought I was noticing repeating patterns and became annoyed with some of the characters, the seemingly endless introduction of characters, clichéd dialogue and lack of depth and involvement with my favorite characters. I realized as I went along though I was still involved with the story and was glad I stayed with it as I read this book. There still is not enough Gabrielle, Nathan, and John for me but the plot in the second half started moving toward a very dramatic conclusion. I take back my thoughts on this series reminding me of Ayn Rand and Robert Heinlein though it still reminds me a little of "Atlas Shrugged".

So much of this is absolutely silly but entertaining in the long run. The overall message of "if you're going to do it, give it 100%" is important, along with being dedicated, loyal and true. It certainly does make me want to go to the gym more often. I just have to skim over any pages containing the names "Bobcat" or "William" as I find them both super annoying. My MacBook crashes whenever I read one of their conversations.

Ok, I will admit that I teared up when one of the main characters was killed in this book. It wasn’t so much as him dying as it was Bethany Anne’s mournful feelings and her crying that nearly did me in. I like when she’s out there kicking ass and swearing up a funny little storm but a death was almost too much.

The battle in Chechnya with the terrorists was really something; they were going to go into a school of 300 children and kill as many as they could, just to get the government’s attention. At the same time Michael went after the school bus full of kidnapped kids in Denver. Both were just awesome. I love when Michael turns into a mist. I mean, you can’t see what’s coming to kill you IF you can’t see it.

As I always say, I love this series and after looking at Amazon today it seems to go on forever, at least 58 books that I could find but there might be more.

No sex and the F-bomb was used 48 times.

As to the narration: Emily Beresford is totally awesome!

How the hell can this series still have so much new stuff to show me?
It's amazing, I'm not only not bored, but I'm even more excited than I was after finishing the first few books.

And you know another thing that absolutely blows my mind? The FACTS! So many events that actually happened, so many accurate 'math stuff', it's wow. I can't figure out if the author is really that smart (doubt a single person can actually possess so much knowledge), or how he managed to do all this. Simply amazing.

This author is incredible!

Lots of action in this story and it kept my attention throughout. There were moments were I was cheering them on, anxious moments, and was even an event that had me in tears.
This series has a strong storyline and characters I can care about. I love that each book wraps up yet leaves me wanting to know what happens next. I won’t be stopping this series any time soon!

Great book although I’m not happy with certain happenings in it. I hope these parts will get better in the future books. I don’t want to say more. I’m enjoying this series even though it’s different than my usual reads.

I'm still here...

Well I started reading The Kurtherian Gambit a couple of weeks ago and just finished book 9 and I'm still interested so on to book 10. Usually I drop out after the third or fourth book but this series has stayed interesting. The only books that have held my interest this long has been the DUNE books so I'm impressed so far. We'll see how it turns out.

Although I love all the characters, some help remembering minor characters would be appreciated. I can't remember who Bree is. The book
Continues to challenge my imagination. Love it. Keep it coming

Piss poor

Rubbish. Rating: minus 4

This is an update to the review which was originally written in July of 2017. I thought at the time that this would be a neat record to myself of what I found to be good, mediocre or god awful while trying a host of unknown (to me) writers. How silly of me. I have since discovered that my reviews are the stuff of legend. Readers who (according to their reading list) don't even read the genre are fascinated by my weighty, well documented, prize worthy, offhand notes to self. I dropped all the lurkers from my friend list but I still have a follower named "Stone". He/she can't be followed by me but wants to be added to my friend list. How creepily odd.

See my review of either " Dark Horse ", a good story by Diener or Powers if the Earth (a sorry book) and comments from a Claes Rees, Jr/cgr710 (a self-identified NeoNazi). If you did not find my experiences with Amazon Goodreads appalling, disturbing or horrible, please leave the page now. I assure you that there is nothing for you here.

Now almost 4 years later, I can admit that Goodreads is far different to what I first expected. At most, I thought that once in six months or so, I might receive a comment that agrees with my take on a book or a writer but for the most part be pleasantly ignored. How dreadfully innocent of me in that ancient time, when courtesy in discourse was a given and anything less unthinkable.

My fellow readers (the English speakers, always American) were revealed as an odd group in that they will comment on books that they haven't read, don't themselves write reviews of these throwaway masterpieces and attack a reader who thankfully doesn't suffer from the commenter's lack of taste, lack of exposure to commonly accepted social norms, lack of a modest education and a varied array (multicultural, even - I can hear the gasps, America remember) of close friends, lovers and good acquaintances.

Obviously, dialogue is impossible to these lost souls. They lack the ability as a rule to muster two complete sentences in their soul-crushing ripostes. Sometimes they struggle with the one. I count on distasteful (read idiotic and often gross) comments each month.

Trish's comment below, is a perfect example of the well considered, thoughtful and respectful response compared to all the dreary, oft angry, barely intelligible rants that followed. She casually dismissed my review and my ratings, instead of asking why I tried to read the series. Had she asked, she might have discovered that I attempted to understand this writer's apparent popularity. I finally used his books as great examples of bad writing, as I considered taking a stab at the craft myself.

I have little regard for the rude, the condescending, the defender of racist or misogynistic writing but most of all the boor who assumes that any right thinking soul has to agree with them on anything. It is a strange version of censorship. Very American, very vicious.

My older wiser self is writing in an idiom more familiar to Trish and others. Trish has me at a disadvantage though. No one who is a stranger would be so condescending to a reader, who has never attempted to nor felt a desire to contact her. Or would they?

I knew a Trish a long time ago. If you are her you really must refresh my memory. As I recall, you were a fan of rough anal intercourse involving multiple partners in succession. Your collection of instruments was quite impressive if I remember correctly. Unfortunately between the photography and taking a number, it was all a bit much. I wasn't interested at the time and my tastes have not yet changed (not judging).

Since we're catching up, would it be appropriate to call you "Little Bitch" because you do seem to like Anderle. I assume it would be presumptuous to use "Queen Bitch". The character after all, is quite the strong, empowered woman. Still if you prefer, I will gladly address you as "Queen Bitch". I must confess that I was mightily impressed that you managed to get ahead of the "Karen" curve. It is as if you had defined a trend then created it. Brilliant! Looking forward to catching up (minus the group sex, photography and the painful looking devices, though the St. Andrews cross did catch my fancy).

She could of course, delete her comments and disappear from my page but they never do. I think that I understand the term "Snowflake" now but not the attached condescension, arrogance and/or rage.

Back to the old boring 2017 me.
Anderle has had his name added to a number of books by other writers in order to boost sales, i suppose. The series is trash and this installment fits in quite nicely. He's not a special case but rather a very good example of low end US science fiction. These novels can be summed up as the US conquers space and allows the occasional non-English surnamed or non-US male to tag along while saving the planet/defeating the aliens or graciously accepting rulership of the human race or the galaxy/universe. All of these are apparently staples of current science fiction and have been the heart of the bulk of Amazon books that I've read or tried to read.

It is pathetic but the much more directly libertarian novels are not just bad, they are scarily white supremacist. In these, women characters except for the figurehead are desperately attempting escape to "The Handmaid's Tale" in search of a better life.

Here, the writer has trouble communicating real emotion or motivations through his characters. There is essentially no character development because he barely has characters. The plot is not much better. Perhaps he might outline his stories before writing. He would still be left without a real character, though. Word choice, paragraph structure and editing would still sink this sorry series.

That leaves zero hope that he can deliver dialogue that isn't juvenile on its better pages. I have read better dialogue in graphic novels (I have great respect for graphic novels). His male characters all share the same cultural background (hetero-white male, U.S. of apparent English ancestry (odd since only about 7% of the population does). All conversation revolves around calling other characters incredibly derogatory names. The more demeaning to women the better.

The women after being rated on the "worthy of getting bonked" meter, get to comply, be flirtatious, get coffee maybe? How much great dialogue could possibly come out of their mouths? It's not as if his female characters have a real thought. His women seem to have the emotional maturity of a preteen, so no surprise.

Machismo and juvenile dialogue are covered. I'm learning a lot about the writer and nothing that I didn't recognize as wrong by eighth grade. I've gone as far as I can in the series but I don't think there is much more that I needed to learn not to think, let alone write.

I watch rather than read science fiction at the moment. Netflix and the other service offer better written film than the low effort print that I've tried to read. Amazon has a particularly low standard for print, It seems.

I discovered Curiosity Stream/Nebula through YouTube. It has a growing collection of educational video for a yearly subscription of $15 USD. If you are interested in that content, it is worth a look. I also accidentally found a community of thoughtful, serious and civil readers on its book channels. If disappointed or possibly disgusted by Goodreads, I recommend visiting YouTube (some channels are included in the list below). Some of my favorite channels are.

I don't have a quote for this book, (Not that Amazon will let me quote books on their site and not sure about Goodreads...don't wanna take the chance) because well I want to quote the whole damn thing. This book was by far my favorite Kurtherian Gambit book to date, to date for me that is. Due to a slip here and some very over zealous fans that couldn't wait for me to catch up, (None actually spoiled this for me) I was able to discern that this book would probably end up killing off Michael. I also understood through this group that Mr. Anderle fixes this huge FLUB later on. So my review may be a little biased because of previous knowledge I had to this reading.

However, here are my thoughts.

I personally didn't care for Michael for the first six or seven books. When Bethany Anne started falling for him I even hated him for a minute. In retrospect I realize it was because he had lost my respect in the earlier books and hadn't exonerated himself in my eyes yet. He was well on his way when BOOM he is gone. Wanna know what pissed me off though? What made me grit my teeth and scream in anger under my breath? That Mr. Anderle did this right after BA told M that she loved him. Like, literally right after. I was furious. She didn't even get to discuss anything else with M...he was just gone.

I have never been more pissed off at the world than I was reading how everyone and their Daddy done gone off the deep end for this technology. Didn't your mamas ever teach you that you can catch a lot more bees with pollen than bullshit? I mean come on. Of course the fallout Earthside is to be expected because...you guessed it...we are humans and as a whole we do some stupid ass shit. War, famine, rioting, murder, genocide, espionage, terrorism...We humans are a destructive lot, and something tells me the humans in our story here done messed with the wrong Missy Vampire if you get what I mean.

The funeral for all of those lost got me in my feels real quick. The fact that Bethany Anne showed her grief to her people really resonated a lot with me. It let the reader know that even the almighty Queen Bitch really is just human with human emotions, but more than that it let her people know and see that with their own eyes. I believe this tragedy will be the catalyst that pushes Bethany Anne towards her next step towards protecting the planet...That is if she or the humans fighting her don't destroy it first.

As I sit here and write this I am overcome with a myriad of different emotions, the main one being sadness and heartache for the characters lost and for those who lost someone. That feeling that wells up right before one cries is there and it tugs, but something holds it back. I said before that I was going to take a short break after this book, but I am not sure I can. They are already in space and I believe the rest will be going to space soon and I really can not wait for that. I have been waiting 9...no 10 and 1/2 books for this and I am truly overjoyed to be experiencing it with you fine folks!

P.S. I fully commend any of you who have been here since the beginning and had to wait for not only the next book but for the next four books to have this resolved. I am positive, that if I had been in your position, I would have been way more pissed of.

P.Sx2: I lied I do have a quote. In honor of Michael with the no last name.

“Can you give us any other hints?” Johann asked. She looked at his face. He was smirking as if she were a little girl at school, running from a scary story. Fuck them all, she thought. She started for the door. “Yes. Don’t screw with the Archangel.” -Anna Elisabeth (It's Hell to Choose, Kurtherian Gambit 9)

little better chapter in the saga

This was a little better piece from the series. It didn’t go into massive details on each and every spot, which I think helped the story move forward. There still wasn’t enough conflict or failure for the characters though. Everything just always seems to work out. Having the death of Michael was a surprise, but to be honest, I doubt he’s dead. He was Myst when the nuke blew, and though it might take a while, I think he’d regenerate. Maybe it was an attempt to create a failure they can move forward from, but it just wasn’t believable to me. Almost too much bad, especially since they talked about backpack nukes potentially being brought in against them in one of the previous books. I would have expected a better protection plan being in place at the base.

I’m not sure about the snippets of the future either. Empress Bethany Anne? Really?? By giving this bit away, you always know she will survive whatever happens. I liked it better knowing that if she failed, or someone else did, each would continue on as beat they could. Now with removing Michael and guaranteeing that BA lives, a major plot line is destroyed permanently.

The Boris character was humorous. I hope that he’s used again. There was enough foreshadowing about him that you realized he had to be a were-bear. Even expecting this, he was still a fun addition. Having him and Michael knowing each other was a great plot point. That Boris was having pain from the beginning of TQB Enterprises, possibly from nanocyte or Etheric ripples?? That would make for a great twist.

It was better though. Before I gave 3 stars on my reviews because I couldn’t do 2.5 to 2.75, so I rounded up because if nothing else it was a quick and fast read. This one got a true 3 stars.

This review is in reference to:https://www.graphicaudio.net/catalog/...

I can easily see why this series has become an underground success. It obviously hasn't had a lot of mainstream attention, but once you get into this series, it's hard to not get invested with it. Mr. Anderle definitely has the ability to make a good story that can rank with Stephen King, James Patterson, Dennis Lehane, and Nora Roberts. And yes I'm probably being a little too enthusiastic about the praise, but not since getting into the Eve Dallas/Roarke series (created under Nora Roberts’ pseudonym J.D. Robb) had I ever been invested in such a series.

That being said, this is another volume that emulates another set of incidences that was done in the anime, Hellsing Ultimate. Not going to put out spoilers if anyone out there hasn’t followed either that anime or this series right here, but what happened in this book did not surprise me in the least when I got halfway through the story. But just in case any of you are listening to this installment with fresh ears, with no prior knowledge of The Kurtherian Gambit, like I have been doing, you better get ready for a box of tissues and ugly crying.

The three-way team of Dave Fernandez, Colleen Delaney, Emily Beresford, along with the entire team of GraphicAudio actors put out quite arguably some tour de-force performances that might take a while to top off in the future. But we got more volumes of this series coming down the pipeline, and I have no doubt that the GraphicAudio team will have the ability to follow-up with what they delivered in this installment.

I’m really reading these books too fast but I simply cannot stop. This series has become addictive to me. The worst thing is that I am now six books behind with my reviews and I am struggling to keep the books apart in my head when reviewing..

The “space race” continues. Well, I guess it is not much of a race with only contestant but it is definitely a race against time. The Queen Bitch has a lot of building to do if she should be prepared when the real bad guys show up.

Of course she also has to deal with the usual asshats trying to fuck up her plans. Actually that is not entirely true. Since the cat is out of the bag when it comes to TQB’s little adventures in space her adversaries have changed. Instead of the menagerie of vampires, werewolves and just plain ordinary thugs we’re moving onto something much much worse… politicians! Well corporate businessmen and such like despicable scum bags who’s only goal in life is personal gain as well.

I’m not sure about the shift from “supernatural” adversaries to this kind of scum since I really hate that kind of human oxygen wasters but I guess it was inevitable with TQB’s increased exposure to the general public.

Well, rest assured that the Queen Bitch’s new adversaries are in for as good an ass whooping as her previous ones. However, this time not everything goes as planned for our dear ass kicking bitch. The long term result for the previously mentioned assholes are the same but not before tragedy strikes.

Well, too bad for the bad guys. Now Bethany Anne is REALLY pissed off. Next book please!

3.5 You Scurvy-Loving Demented Llama-Sniffer Stars

It’s Hell To Choose is the ninth book in The Kurtherian Gambit series by Michael Anderle.

The title of this book is right no mark. When it comes down to the moment of deciding who to send to take on two separate enemy attacks on children. When you spend the entire book within the viewpoints of the men and women responsible for these attacks. When you see the devastation they bring to this journey with their endeavors. It’s made vibrantly clear how too true this title is.

I’m honestly pissed and want to scream at Anderle at the top of my lungs. HOW DARE YOU!?!?! We didn’t even really get to experience their relationship fully manifesting. I’m feeling very stabby, that it was in the process of elevating when it was all obliterated and turned moot point. I held out until the very last page for ‘SIKE!’ moment that never came.

What wrath shall she rain down in retribution for this dishonor? Will planet earth and its nation-powers finally discover the truth in who they are dealing with? And how many will stand with her?

I hope we get to look back in on the Consanesco, and the people healed later. Since the attack didn’t leave much room to meet any more of this people, and see if they will be joining her vision. That they also ruined what would have been a great publicity movement for one of the many good things TBQ has done, is just another upset in the story.

Wow!!!!!!

Talk about a roller coaster ride!!! This book took me from the peak of HELL YEAH!!! All the way down to the pit of despair and sorrow. No spoiler but OMFG, talk about rough. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried. Hard. Mind you the reason is part of the amazing story. Now it's off to the next book in this series. I am only 6 books from being current. Mind you, I'm reading these in so far 4 days. I'm worried about Jonesing for the next book....yes, they are THAT GREAT!!!!
The only authors I am this addicted to are little known authors like (in no particular order) Robert Jordan, John Ringo, Mike Massa, David Weber, Sarah Hoyt, David Drake, and Jim Butcher.
*Note: If you didn't get the sarcasm of the last sentence you NEED to read them. They also tell great stories, have characters you love and damn well suck you into reading WAY past bed time into...well, I can read one more chapter then shower for work.
**Note 2: Yes, this author has almost made me late to work following a full night of reading...twice so far. In less than a week!!!!

SNAFU or FUBAR - she will end it

A great read.
Her plans for the Space Station are going full steam ahead and now with the Moon Base in operation things are looking up. Looking up until some conglomerates decide that they want the technology. Terrorist attacks on children, pirate attacks on the ship and their home based under fire. How will it end? A back pack nuclear weapon! I know that Michael died but did they recover his body or did he change in time. Could he still be in the Etheric and need centuries to recover? Will she recover from the news that Michael is gone? How will the world react to the news footage taken of the pirates attack?
Great to see the way the people are starting to band together to fight against terrorism. But it seems also good to see the amount of force conglomerates will use to increase their profit margins. Is life really such a cheap commodity?

Another great story! Though, I had to cry at points

Not giving anything away to people who haven’t read this yet, so will only say sometimes things work out how they must, but that doesn’t mean we are happy about them.

Other than the scenes that made me cry, there was a lot of excitement and definitely some triumphs for TQB! Things are definitely speeding up with the push towards being prepared to protect the Earth and its people.

I’m glad Michael is mostly only introducing the team leads and not all of the individuals, now that we have groups of over 100 starting at a time. I hope the EIs and ADAM help to cut through the inevitable red tape encountered as a company moves into being a huge enterprise.

Break’s over now, back to work. Wouldn’t it be cool if someday our technology was in some way useful in a push for the stars?! :)

It's Hell to choose and I choose Hell for the deserving

Wow! What an emotionally draining addition to the BA saga. Governments want what BA has for their own power plays. Corporate canals want what BA has to keep and wield power over the clueless masses and to milk every penny from the stolen technologies that they can. BA only wants to save humanity and must choose to put what may be most precious to her in harm's way. But you, and I, and the kids, know that they have crossed the line of no return and the bill is about to come due! Another emotional roller coaster ride from Anderle. I feel like my eyes are red and my fangs are extended and I want a piece of a certain power hungry group. I really believe there's no rock they can crawl under that will not be discovered. Excellent read! Excellent series.

Still Going Strong!

I'm still enjoying this series even after book nine. I wanted to let Michael Anderson know if he still reads these reviews that he wasn't the only American male that cried when Michael died. I can't believe how fast you put out each book.
If buy chance you are looking at the reviews because you would like to start this series of books and happen to be reading this one I can say for a fact that this is a series that won't let you down ( at least for the nine books I've read) and really just keeps getting better. There are a LOT of characters and I enjoy them all and the action is outstanding. This is just a great series and I would give it a big thumbs up and would just about Guarantee that you will enjoy it also.

Death, death, and more death

Why do people in power always want what isn’t theirs? Why do they think they are entitled? Feel they can use any method to obtain what they desire? And I’m not limiting this group to corporations only. Governments around the world are, in my opinion, some of the worst of the worst feeling the have the God given right to do what they feel justifies their desired results.
***SPOILER ALERT***

As for Michael??? I couldn’t believe you decided it was time for him to die. That truly did knock me backwards a few steps. Bethany Anne had just really committed herself to their relationship!
We go now to a new chapter-in Australia. I can’t wait to see what is next in store for us.

Action!

It's incredible how much story can be fit into a single book! This one is pretty much non-stop action, so it's a good thing our side can get from place to place quickly. What this "episode" highlights is, I feel, a frightening truth: If a company were to invent tech like what is shown here, it's a damned good bet the government is going to demand you turn it over to them. And you can be sure other companies and other countries are going to join the race to get it away from you. Makes me want to swear, but I doubt it's up to the Queen's standards and I sure as hell don't want to drop and give her 20!I

I cried and sobbed and wanted to throw my Kindle against the wall, but that's the effectiveness of MA writing. Why all the tears? It's hard to see the character you've grown to be so fond of die. Yes, I said it, and you all know it, and it's not a spoiler. This book was crazy amazing. From page one I couldn't put it down. So all I have to say is go ahead and read this one. You won't regret it. And if you haven't read the series yet. Do it! It's one hell of a ride that will make you laugh, make you cry, and ready to kick some ass, and you just may learn some new swear words .

Good till the end

I was enjoying this story, but come the final battle I just had this feeling something I may not like was coming. I actually saw what was going to happen and when I did I really hoped I would be wrong. It pisses me off that it had to end like that for BA, she deserves better even if he says that she will find other loves, its just not the same. I'm going to go on with thinking that Michael made it into the mystery he wasn't affected but is merely lost and BA will find him again. A lot better way to picture this.
