Manhattan
Manhattan is the continuing saga of Michael and Emily Ranahan’s life as recounted in In The Time Of Famine. In fleeing the famine in Ireland to find a new life in the New World, they come ashore at New York City on an island called Manhattan, a chaotic, odoriferous city filled with rascals, ne’er’ do-wells, rapscallions, and corrupt politicians.
As they form their new life together they will experience the horrors of the infamous Five Points, the challenge of No Irish Need Apply signs, the Great Panic of 1857, the frightful Civil War riots, and finally, the building of the Brooklyn Bridge.
Michael and Emily will experience all the joys and sorrows that a city like Manhattan can offer.
Michael Grant, who has written sixteen books, currently lives in Knoxville TN with his wife, Elizabeth, and their golden retriever, Beau.

Historical fiction of New York
This book continues Emily and Michael 's story after immigrating from Ireland. It also tells the history of New York and how hard it was for the Irish to get jobs or even eventually own businesses. It was interesting reading about the Brooklyn bridge being built and men losing their life with what was basically coming up to fast after being below so far and breathing compressed air. Enjoyed reading about the Irish and the problems they faced after immigrating to the United States. It took a lot of determination and hard work to make a new life in the United States.

Page Turner
I loved the book. It made me really think about my own grandfather's journey to America. People in those times were so strong. The book has me doing some research of my own on the Brooklyn Bridge, etc. My grandfather did not stay in NY however I don't know how long he would have stayed before he went to Wisconsin.

I loved this book, which is the continuing story of Michael and Emily Ranahan, that began in the book “In The Time of Famine”. Both books are engrossing, educational, and entertaining historical fiction accounts of Irish and American history. I couldn’t put either book down and wish there was another book in this series!
