I love anything Tracy Brown makes, but babyyyyyy. This was a really good roller coaster to be on. I enjoyed every last novella that was offered in the book. The 1st story had me mfn shook, cuz what he just out here in these streets loose like that. But the 2nd story was OMGGGG!! The MFN brother bending the husband. he last story poor Marley couldn't get a damn break. This will for sure be a re read.

Ok so, boom…

Disaster by Tracy Brown: 🥷🏾’s be CRAZY for real. And this one took the cake … on some Joe type of time! Money will have you blinded.

Wild Cherry by K’Wan: I was on the floor, gasping with that ending! 🥷🏾’s be serial abusers and bending/doing the bending life a mf.

Twice in a Lifetime by Angel Mitchell: 🥷🏾’s be liars and nastyyyyy. Unfortunately, I knew what type of time Chris was on, I mean immediately. I wanted to not like this one but it had me gasping too because wtf? I’d be calling the chop shop and asking for forgiveness later.

If you don’t like open endings, pass.

I enjoyed the 1st 2 stories more than the last. The last story was just a little too unbelievable for me. I think if it took another direction after the first "surprise" or ended after it I would have liked it a little better. I just couldn't fathom that some questions didn't arise from the encounters when the conversation seemed to lead in a way that I know I would be like "okay, you just said...please elaborate or explain". Story 1 was my favorite, disturbing, well all the stories were disturbing, but most realistic. Second story had a twist I wasn't expecting at the end. Didn't see it coming but it made for an interesting ending.

I've never read urban fiction before, but won this in a Goodreads contest and thought I'd expand my horizons. This one is a collection of stories and overall, written in a good story-telling style. Not being a woman of color, the vernacular was a little tough for me to navigate, but it was OK. The first story, Flirting with Disaster, I felt kind of gypped. It took so long to get to the point, then boom, it was over and you were left wondering what happened next.

Anyway... it's not a bad read. Definitely easy and quick.

I feel like i was cheated out of what should have been a great read. the first story was like a cliff hangar. the second one was great. so far, i have never been disappointed with Kwan. My mouth was open when princess' head exploded. the last had the potential to be a full novel bc i want to know what will happen with the babies.

This was my first novella and I am actually impressed. All 3 stories were very captivating but I felt they all have cliff hangers 😭

Trey was literally a lunatic! No way you lied about your whole life. To be a stalker and think that’s ok is well pretty absurd. Having mommy issues and not wanting to handle it is even crazier. Unfortunately Chloe was his victim but I’m glad that she made it out!

Slim and Jackie are literally the scum on the bottom of your shoe! Princess and Gina and were raised to be strong but yet they were so weak. I knew Gina would give in and have sex with princess. Princess and Gina really went out w/ a bang killing those men, as they should have! Slim had some crack head shit with him and clearly Gina was not with that mess she was so scary but I don’t blame her. No way Jackie dirty wee wee tail was sleeping with Gina brother. I would have crashed out.

Finding out you’re in love with your sibling!!!! My my my. This was literally spiraling out of control. Messing with your deceased bestfriend girlfriend is well… DIABOLICAL if I do say myself. Ok so shawty luck was horrible!!!! Marley went through turmoil after turmoil, I thought she was going to find her true love and BAM it’s her brother. Man oh man.

This was good. There were 3 short stories that were cautionary tales to the extreme.

Tracy Browns was the first and I think hers was the best, even though the other two were good. You have a 21 year old that think she know everything and ends up getting very badly hurt by a dude she thought she had under control. I’m not victim blaming, but at 21 you really don’t know shit. The least you can do is humble yourself enough to be cautious. She was juicing Tre and fucking Justin and thought Tre was mine the wiser. That Biggs turned out to be completely crazy.

Let me back peddle. It’s easy to see the red flags from the outside looking in or when you have the privilege of seeing a situation from everyone’s mind like you can when you’re the reader. So I will give Chloe some grace.

But back to Tre’s crazy ass. He ended up beating the shit out of her, thinking she was dead and tossing her into the water. She floated to the surface that same night and turned out to be alive. I didn’t like that. I would have liked it better if she died. Not because I wanted her to but that was more realistic to me. Unless she was playing possum, which it didn’t say she was, she was unconscious when he finished beating her face in. She would have drowned. It was still good though.

The next one was by Kwan. Two women in abusive situations bump coochies and then decide to kill each others men. Only for one of them to find out that her gay brother was having an affair with her husband. And when he found out the home girl killed his lover he shot her ass right in front of his sister. This one was good because I just really liked that twist at the end. This nigga was beating her ass and her brother was tryin go to get her away from him, but come to find out it was so HE could be with the husband chile.

The last one was crazy. This girl falls in love with who turns out to be her brother (neither of them knew their father). The boy committed suicide. Then she falls in love with his friend who ALSO turns out to be her absent fathers son. But this nigga knew the whole time that they were brother and sister and he did not care 🤢🤢🤢🤮 And get ass end up pregnant!!!!

She was debating getting an abortion because of course when she found out she had been fucking her brother she was disgusted. But then she was debating keeping it AND found out she was having twins!!! And that’s how it ended. I don’t like not knowing what happened or having yo complete the story in my head.

But if you want to know, I think they were on some flowers in the attic shit. Living like husband and wife, never telling anyone or their kids that they are a product of incest. Yuck!

Tracy Brown’s story Disaster, about a co-ed who meets an older track worker/psych major, is rather plain. A girl very normal, tired of immature guys so is looking for someone more established in terms of ambition. The writing just doesn’t have much personality, too much lecturing on stuff everyone agrees w/: rational dating decisions, average wants of wanting to be wanted and have some monetary success. Gotta skip after two chs to end, gotta say the surprise is big if you wanna wait but I’ve got too much in my TBR list to care about the forgettable MC, I wanted this for K’wan’s story anyway. It’s also an info-dumpy here’s-all-the-blanks way to go about it.

Wild Cherry by K’wan: Much better voice (audio and writing wise). Vivid scene of a woman serving her man at his heated poker party. She strives to appear worthy of his top shelf lifestyle. Jackie is Gina’s husband who she finds model sexy—until his temper swaggers in. He’s used to being on edge from growing up w/ a dad who breaks up with his mom every few months, the celebration of returning being interestingly cherry smoothies. But he’s as curt as the dad he hates: bitching about dinner, his girl’s fam and friends and skimpily parading around to impress him. Convincing female POV.

The next ch is in Princess’ POV who’s w/ the pimp Slim she’s beyond these days. She’s self-assured and wants a more stable life but used to the old comfort of Slim who still wants to stay in the game. He’s willing to show it through violence. Gina & Princess meet, finding their men too similar though Jackie is much more apologetic. The writing has a slice of steam, but it’s more so attractively sassy and drama driven. Gina, like everyone (including the foreign married couple who take her to their hotel suite for thousands), find her irresistible. They’re both thinking of saving to get away from their hot and cold abusers. The story progression is great, the sensual, emotional, and visceral parts. There are even a few funny moments with the characters barbing each other or describing smells and tastes. The last few sentences are nuts! Lot to process after.

The last story by Angel is voiced by a guy with a thick New England Italian accent which is grossly hilarious but unlistenable since he’s voicing a young, promiscuous mixed girl. The wording anyway is too odd, a mix of casual eye-f*cking guys “on her tight game” and robotically high word choice like “opposite sex,” “conquest” “sexual liaison.” It’s just awkwardly corny.

So these are three novels or Tracy, Brown, Kwan, and Angel Mitchell.
Disaster by Tracy Brown: A young college student named Chloe’s that goes by her rules but dealing with 2 guys one name Justin that she has relations with and an older guy name Trey. After Justin mysteriously gets murdered, Chloe decides to pursue her relationship with Trey but Chloe didn’t know that Trey had a mental illness and showed her red flags even when her sister was trying to tell her the weirdness, that Trey act.
Due to a minor disagreement Trey beats Chloe face unrecognizable and dumped her in the water thinking she dead. Chloe was floating to the surface and was alive in the hospital, That was the end.

Wild Cherry by Kwan: two childhood friends Gina and Princess are in a cheating in abusive relationships by Jackie and Slim. Gina and princess get drunk, fool around and plan the death of their husband and boyfriend. Gina sleep with Chris man slim mixed his drink with Wild Cherry and princess sleep with Jackie husband and mixed his drink. Wild Cherry and they both die. Gina realized that her husband is dead so she called her brother Richard to assist after Richard found out who killed Jackie he put a bullet in Princess head. Reason why is is because Richard was adamant kept telling his sister Gina to leave Jackie alone is because Richard was Jackie lover the whole time.

Twice in a lifetime by Angel Mitchell: Marley fell in love with a dude name Dajuan. Neither did Marley or Dajuan knew their father growing up but one night at dinner Dajuan mother had a guest name Charles and the bomb dropped,He was their father! Dajuan was so devastated that he committed suicide and Marley grieve. Marley end up dating her brothers/Lover best friend named Chris and Chris homie named Jay at the same time without them, knowing. Jay caught Marley on a date with Chris so he decided to call Marley tell her to ask Chris who his father is and have a nice life with him. Jay call Chris dad who name is which she never did So Jay called Charles to the office knowing that Marley will be there. Charles let Marley know that Chris is his son and her brother. Marley was sick to her stomach and Chris knew that that was his sister all alone, but he was so in love with her he was gonna keep their relationship going cause he loved her. Marley end up pregnant with twins, and that was the end of the story. So you won’t know if she kept her brother’s babies or not.

In Flirting With Disaster by Tracy Brown, Chloe is doing what she wants & living as any normal young adult would. She's carefree. Then she meets Trey who is really too good to be true. She's so wrapped up in him doing what she wants that she doesn't notice something is definitely off.
In Wild Cherry by K'wan Gina's husband takes good care of her but he seems to be a lil irrational lately. Then Gina runs into an old friend, Princess. Her man had been getting crazy lately as well. They decide to stick together.
Twice In A Lifetime by Angel Mitchell was my least favorite of all the stories but still interesting. I think it was the narrator. Marley found love & her heart was broken when it was taken away in a horrific way. When she finally decides to let go & love again, she gets the worst news she could imagine. Again!

I’m still in shock that I don’t even know what to write in this review. This is a collection of novellas and honestly it’s get wilder by the story. The first story is by Tracy Brown, one of my favorite authors. The second is K’Wan who I’m currently reading as well. This collection needs trigger warnings especially because it’s a older book. This collection tackles physical and verbal abuse, infidelity and incest. The approach these authors take make you keep reading because you have to know what’s next. If you want a fast paced read this is for you, but be careful if easily triggered.

Good read......but

I love reading short stories and these were very good. My problem was no story was resolved. I would have loved to have a conclusion to each. It would be different if the author carried the story over to another book but I didn't find that. Again, stories were really good.

3 stories
📍Didn’t love the narrator sorry was okay but took a huge twist - didn’t love it
📍Only narrator I really liked was for book 2 - Princess, Gina, Slim and Jackie... didn’t see that ending coming!!!
📍Strongly disliked the 3rd narrator - it was so thick and distracting I couldn’t get into the story - this one may be a better read

Ugh

Interesting stories written in voices less familiar to me. There are a LOT of graphic sexual scenes, which are not for the faint of heart. They are part of the character and plot development so fit within the stories. My husband and I listened on audio while on longer drives and some of the scenes almost required us to pull over!

Crazy, Crazy, Insane is what this book is! I enjoyed all three stories. The first story was good, the second story was great - I didn’t see that ending coming. The THIRD STORY!!!! OMG 😳 . I mean WHAT DO YOU DO if that happens in real life??? And with all of the promiscuity going on today THIS is actually closer to a reality than NOT! How devastating for everyone involved.

10 outta 10 HIGHLY recommend! The first two stories were my favorite. The first one with it being a cautionary story on how you can't TRUST PEOPLE! You just CANT! You NEVER TRULY KNOW wtf these weirdos are, so it's always best to just leave folks ALONE! The second story was CRAZY TO! Didn't see that twist ending coming from a million miles away. My edges were not spared!

All 3 of the stories had great content, but they all end at the climax of the story. I read the mixed reviews and now I truly understand why people rated this as low as they did. Very disappointing as a big fan of Tracy Brown.

Although this is fictional, I can see all these stories happening in today's times, to be quite honest. Tracy Brown and K’wan’s storyline was good. Now, the last story that A. Mitchell wrote was alright, but that ending was like, “Hmm, let me throw this in there.” now the end.

three short stories in one book. all 3 were so good it was hard to pick a favorite. I am familiar with the work of Tracy Brown and K'wan. This was my first time reading anything by Angel Mitchell. Each story flipped the script and left you wanting read more. In Flirting With Disaster , Chloe prided herself on being the beautiful intelligent woman that used men before they used her. She was an advocate of play or be played. She was so annoying with it that she preached to her friends on a regular. She never saw it coming when Trey played her. Wild Cherry was on point. Don't sleep on K'wan he can write. Gina and Princess team up to get rid of their abusive significant others. With the use of the sap if the African wild cherry plant. The best part of t he story is the explosive ending. Twice In A Lifetime is a mess. How the other thought of it I have no clue. Excellent read.

This book was fast paced, and had some pretty good stories.

I didn't expect to like it since I rarely read urban fiction, but I was pleasantly surprised.

I must say that the story by K'wan was the best of the three. Now, I want to go read some more of his work.

Definitely a book worth reading. I enjoyed reading these three very different novellas.
