શિવ પુરાણ [Shiv Puran]

Rate this book
Needless to emphasise that the Shiv Purana comprises the most authentic details about Lord Shiva. The whole treatise on ancient knowledge has been converted into small stories in this book for easy comprehensions of our readers. Most of the details which are repititive and already mentioned in our ‘Vishnu Purana’ have been briefly recounted for saving on space. at times there appeared some confusion about the details which have been hinted in the foootnotes. Since most of these stories are allegorical in genre, their true significance has also been suggested with in the parenthesis. In short, what you have in your hands is an essential translation cum explanation of the Shiv Purana.

Shiv Puran is a Hindu religious text that tells the story of Lord Shiva, one of the most important gods in the Hindu pantheon. The text is divided into seven parts, each known as a khand, and contains a total of 24,000 verses.

The first part, called the Vidyeeshwara Samhita, describes the glory of Lord Shiva and provides instructions on how to worship him. The second part, the Rudra Samhita, contains stories of Lord Shiva's creation, destruction, and preservation of the universe, as well as his marriage to the goddess Parvati.

The third part, the Shatarudra Samhita, contains hymns and prayers to Lord Shiva, while the fourth part, the Koti Rudra Samhita, describes the various forms and manifestations of Lord Shiva.

The fifth part, the Uma Samhita, tells the story of the goddess Uma, another form of the goddess Parvati, and her relationship with Lord Shiva. The sixth part, the Kailash Samhita, provides detailed descriptions of the geography and mythology of the mountain of Kailash, which is believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva.

The final part, the Vayu Samhita, contains more hymns and prayers to Lord Shiva, as well as stories of his devotees and the benefits of worshiping him. Overall, the Shiv Puran is an important text for devotees of Lord Shiva and provides insight into the mythology and beliefs of Hinduism.

There are several takeaways that we can inculcate from the Shiv Puran. Here are a few:

Devotion and Faith: The Shiv Puran emphasizes the importance of devotion and faith in Lord Shiva. The stories of Lord Shiva and his devotees illustrate how unwavering faith and devotion can lead to spiritual growth and ultimately liberation.

Self-Control and Discipline: Lord Shiva is often depicted as a symbol of self-control and discipline. The Shiv Puran emphasizes the importance of these qualities in leading a virtuous and fulfilling life.

Knowledge and Wisdom: The Shiv Puran also emphasizes the importance of knowledge and wisdom. The stories in the text often carry a deeper meaning that can be understood through reflection and contemplation, and the text contains many hymns and prayers that extol the virtues of knowledge and wisdom.

Compassion and Kindness: Although Lord Shiva is often depicted as a powerful and fearsome deity, the Shiv Puran also shows his compassionate and kind nature. This reminds us of the importance of showing compassion and kindness towards all living beings.

Overall, the Shiv Puran provides a wealth of spiritual and moral guidance that can be applied to our daily lives. It encourages us to cultivate qualities such as devotion, self-control, knowledge, and compassion, which can help us lead a more fulfilling and virtuous life.

Narrated beautifully bu Neeraj, This book is a treat for ears for anyone who wants to explore the Puranas.

The first two chapters are just instructions for worship thus skippable. Rest of the book is a non-chronological anthology of stories demonstrating the characteristics and concept of Shiv. Interestingly, contrary to my existing perception, even fundamental gods like Bramha and Vishnu are shown to have human-like flaws and emotions similar to the characters of the Mahabharata which is interesting to see. As this sets the process of genesis, character-setting, and preservation of the universe as a dynamic argument between these multiple primary forces that have their own unique characteristics.
