Dragons, magic, and more...

Welcome to Shifter’s University!

Claire Pratten has a secret—one that she’s never shared with a soul. Whenever she is frightened, her “other” self comes out. Normally she has no problem hiding what she is, but lately life at her foster home has gotten harder and keeping her secret is getting tougher.

Logan Fairmont is a dragon shifter and more than accustomed to looking out for himself—and others. In fact, he is one of the few Imperium University students tasked with spending weekends in the city, searching for young shapeshifters on the edge of revealing their magic to the human race. When he finds Claire, Logan knows she will need the help of the University and its teachers to blend into society.

He thinks he knows what she is.

But magic is never quite so simple.

More like 1.5 stars but I rounded up because supernatural boarding schools have a special place in my cold dead heart. This was not the worst thing I’ve ever read, but that’s the best I can say about this trip to blahtown.

Flimsy plot needs a ridiculous amount of development to make this properly readable. There’s tons of choices made purely for weird plot reasons, yet nothing really happens. At one point there is a dramatic moment where a chapter ends with “the school is under attack!” And then you get to the next chapter and...the characters decide to just walk back to the school and see what happened, and nothing happened. Nobody was hurt, no real mention of the perpetrators. Life continues on as usual. Uh what?

And that type of thing is pretty much normal throughout. Nothing is fully developed so you don’t know reasoning for so much shit. For instance the headmistress woman has been sending the dragon guy out as her eyes and ears around town, looking for shifters maturing into their power. Sooooo, kind of important job, ya know? Requires a bit of trust. So it makes no sense that she randomly flips the switch on him and he is all of a sudden “treading on thin ice” with her. Such obvious ploy to manufacture conflict and I’m not going to fall for it.

Oh and there’s a snake shifter named Victor who is a useless douchebag with no redeemable qualities because OF COURSE there is. Obvious paranormal trope is obvious.

Ended on a cliffy and I didn’t actually care, so...here we are.

PS the characters are super boring
PPS I didn’t even care enough to root for them to bone and I root for everybody to bone

Shifter's University was a pretty quick and easy read. It kept me interested from the beginning and had me wanting more once I reached the end. I always find shifter books so highly entertaining and I just liked how this one was written. I liked the little twists and turns. The characters were perfect for this book too. I really liked Claire and thought she had a terrible father figure in her life. I'm glad that her friend got her out of that house and invited to the shifter's university. I loved Logan too. I'm glad that they had each other and sort of developed a relationship. Logan is a dragon shifter while Claire is a Yokai shifter. She's deemed super dangerous and without even knowing she's secretly being hunted. Yes, lots of people want her dead.

I really liked this entire book. I seriously can't wait to read the next one. I need to know if/how/when Claire will save Logan before he just turns into his animal side forever.

This one is more a 3.5 for me.

This story had many good elements. The shifters and their connection to the elements was well done. The magic system and the setting was also done well, with a lot of good development potential in future books. I even enjoyed the shifters having to go to a special school. Their treatment and the conflict of being different was reminiscent of the X-Men series. The element of witches controlling certain aspects of the world is also an interesting premise that I think should be explored further in later books.

However, my main problem with this book revolved around Logan and Claire. Logan in particular displayed many of the signs of abusive behavior. He was controlling, manipulative and jealous. He would blame Claire for things she didn't do wrong, making her feel bad, and displayed extreme jealousy, all of which are signs of abusive behavior according to the Domastic Abuse Hotline. And being an "aggressive", loner dragon shifter is no excuse for treating someone like crap.

Quotes include, "Don't ever run away and scare me liike that again Claire."

"You should have let me come with you Claire, I could have helped." This one isn't outwardly abusive, but he never let her do her own thing. He always had to help or save her or watch her.

And then Claire was no better. She had absolutely no agency in this book. She would do nothing to protect herself. As soon as she saw Logan that's all there was. She suddenly didn't know how to defend, stand up or speak for herself. Which is infinitely frustrating. And being the victim of abuse, I figured she would see the signs in Logan as well and tell hiim off. Instead she throws herself at him and let's him act that way.

Other than that, I would like to see where this plot takes the story and how the characters progress and develop now that they are separated. I think a lot of good could happen.

Book Title: Shifter’s University
Book Author: K. R. Thompson
Source: K.U.
Rating: 5 stars

So here’s the fun part – It’s not about shifters in high school. When I was starting out as an writer in a writing community that no longer exists, it was popular to write about shifters in high school. This is about shifters in university. All grown up from my perspective lol

Mainly it’s about a dragon shifter and a fox. It also has griffins, mermaids, snakes, wolves, and more. It’s about learning to accept the animal part of oneself and at the same time keeping a secret from humans. All the while fighting bad humans who want all shifters dead.

Warning: This book ends on a cliffhanger.

Also, there’s a slow burning romance but the couple is cute. I really liked Logan + Claire. Cute.

I recommend this novel to those who read stories about shifters in high school and are ready to graduate to university. 😉

I am giving this read three stars as the story itself doesn't fully intrigue or capture me until just about the end. This doesn't mean that I didn't like the storyline or the writing it just means that I wish it had picked up faster before it ended. The characters are magical and the premise is good so I definitely will be reading the next installment as I want to know what comes next. -The Voluptuous Book Diva

Something unexpected...

The storyline is good. You have a teenager in foster care that is a shifter... I known to her what type she is till she gets to Shifter University :). It has suspends of trying to find why the school is getting attacked. I enjoyed it. I would like to read the next one to how the author plans this out. It was a good introduction to the series. I think it needed a bit more action scenes and for the main character to be a bit stronger... but it worked in this book because you could see how she is slowly coming into herself. Hope the next one is better :)

I really loved the shifter aspect - I loved that there were all different types of animals, related to different elements. And dragons are always a plus. I liked the magic system and boarding school stories are always fun. Unfortunately, the characters fell flat for me. I found them to be one-dimensional, and the writing was a stilted, with no natural rhythm or flow.

I had high hopes for this book because the blurb sounded interesting, but I was sorely disappointed.

Somehow, the author managed to achieve writing a novel that was slow AND fast paced at the same time. Slow, because nothing important was really happening, and fast, because everything unimportant flew by, utterly unremarkable, as if the scenes themselves were just going through the motions. First, this happens, then this, then this, and oh gasp, this, and then this........

Not to mention the characters aren't very developed either. I get it - hot boy meets hot girl, insta-love - but REALLY?? That whole thing about how dragons don't feel protective of anyone, and suddenly Logan feels protective of Claire, omg it's so confusing, why is this happening, dragons don't do this shit-whatever.

All in all, a weak novel that failed to hook me in and keep me interested beyond the sixth chapter.

Aimed at a young audience, very predictable

I had high hopes for this book as it sounded so interesting. However I was left disappointed. The writing was very basic and it felt better suited to a very young audience, I.e. under 14's. The story about the shifters never really developed properly, instead the focus turned to the romance between the Dragon and the Fox. A romance that was quite childlike in its development, as it was sudden with no build up. The story became quite dull and predictable very early on with very little action. The action scenes were very brief and seemed more of an afterthought.

I rarely give such a low review, but...

This book must have been written by someone in middle school. It had absolutely no substance at all, just a barely passable plot. I don't like to leave books half read, so I was practically begging for it to end to get closure. Luckily it was a short book -- probably a lot of the reason why it lacked any depth. In the end, there was a cliffhanger so now if I want absolute closure I'll have to read the sequel. Hmm.... At that point, I think I'll just use my imagination and save myself the torture.

SHIFTER’S UNIVERSITY

BOOK REVIEW : SHIFTER’S UNIVERSITY : K.R. THOMPSON

JUST IMAGINE ... IF THE HARRY POTTER AND THE X-MEN UNIVERSES HAD A BABY, K. R. THOMPSON'S SHIFTER'S UNIVERSITY WOULD BE BORN IN THE FORM OF A BOOK!

Dragon's, Yokai, Mermaids, Vampires, Gargoyles, Centaurs, Wyverns, Witches, Woodland Critters, Werewolves, Water Serpents, Fae And So Much More. Throw In The Evil Dark Watch, And What More Could You Possibly Want All Wrapped Up In One Amazing Book?

Set in present day, in our very own world, but shielded from prying human eyes, lies an Imaginative, original and unlike any other shifter book I've read before it! And I must say I loved everything about this book, from first seeing the cover, reading the blurb and just knowing I had to read it, to the rules they live by, the mythology that comes into play, to the main and supporting characters, to the fast past action and adventure and to the way the two main characters support & play off each other. I believe a great love story lies within continuing episodes. This sure was one wild & crazy ride that kept me glued to my screen and flipping those pages just as fast as I could read!

Imperium University is a school for Shifter’s of various types with various abilities and surrounds main characters Logan, a Dragon Shifter and Claire, thought to be a Kitsune (Fox) but really a Yokai in hiding (a special type of shifter feared by all human & Shifter alike who can borrow magic from those around her causing a major build up of magic in herself & around her and then able to take any form or a combination of shifters around her).
The Shifters although hidden from main stream humanity have had a long standing fued with a human terrorist group calling themselves The Dark Watch, who have been planning, raiding and attacking the school for many years. It's true what they say "People are frightened by that which they don't understand or have no explanation for!

This is the first book of K.R. Thompson's I have read, but it certainly will not be the last!
Especially as this finished on a cliffhanger, and now I can't wait to get my hands on Book 2,
And Continue On This Adventure Of A Lifetime A With This Fascinating Duel Natured Species Half Human, Half Beast. But at least I only have to wait till December 2nd as an ARC Reviewer!

Really Well Written, Imaginative, Creative, And Original With Great Storyline, Main & Secondary Characters You Quickly Grow To Care About Quickly,And Some You'd Even
Love To Hate! 4.2⭐️ Out Of 5⭐️, And Well On its Way to Being 5⭐️ Series!

K. R. Thompson's shifter world is original and unique. A university where shifters attend classes next to unsuspecting humans as they learn to control their other self. It's also a place of werewolves, eves, witches, dragons, and a multitude of other magical shifters. Thompson filled this story with magic, greed, hatred, prejudice, and attraction. Shifters share the same ugly traits as humans, with one exception, the humans in Shifter's University want the shifters dead. Known as the Dark Watch, they are willing to kill to achieve their goals.

Although Logan, as a dragon should have been a loner, Thompson instilled into him caring and protectiveness for Claire. Their attraction's palpable. Having led a life of abuse, Claire's insecure, as well as, frightened when she discovers she's much more than thought. She's something which scares other shifters and would be a death sentence if known.

Every good story must have a villain, and Victor filled the bill in Shifter's University. A shifter who is genuinely evil, conniving, and self-centered; he has the nature of his other self, a snake. I knew I had not seen the last of Victor after his dastardly deeds.

Placing the shifters in a university to learn and control their other self is an excellent stroke by Thompson. Giving the shifters antagonists in the form of the Dark Watch deepened the storyline. Thompson held the reasons for the Dark Watch's attacks close to her chest; revealing the why at the last possible moment. What a surprise the readers has coming! It's evident from the quality of this story, K. R. Thompson has a vivid imagination, as well as, the ability to tell an entertaining story.

MY OPINION:

K. R. Thompson's writing flows well, and her characters are well-developed. I found the pace fast and steady with an intriguing storyline. Thompson brought the plot threads together to form a cohesive, entertaining story. Her scenes transition smoothly, and with vivid descriptions, I could see each scene and character in my mind's eye, and what characters K. R. Thompson created! Thompson left an open-ended finale assuring we will see more of the shifters in future books. Shifter's University's a clean book suitable for anyone who enjoys a magical world of shifters and humans. I would not hesitate to buy this book for myself or a friend.

SHIFTER'S UNIVERSITY RECOMMENDATION: STARS 4

(I received a free ARC in exchange for an honest review.)

LOGAN is a loner. Dragon Shifters usually are. He's also hotheaded and on the verge of getting kicked out of Shifter's Imperium University, a well-known school that secretly houses many other shapeshifters- and at Imperium, getting kicked out doesn't just mean expulsion- it means being banished to the Forest of lost Souls. A fate worse than death.
CLAIRE would rather die than keep living with her abusive, alcoholic foster father, and hiding her Fox Shifter self from the world. Luckily, her best friend is a witch, and pulls a few strings to get Claire accepted into Imperium. Claire is no longer alone- she has many new Shifter friends, and Logan, who might be something more. But Claire has a darker secret- and if anyone found out, she'd be shunned, or even be risking banishment.
Unfortunately, Logan and Claire don't have time to worry. Something is hunting Imperium's shifters- an organization that won't stop until everything otherworldly is destroyed. And if Claire and Logan can't stop them, all of their friends will die.

I like this book. It's a cute, fun, magical story. There were a few minor grammatical mistakes, which did not hinder my enjoyment but might make me hesitate to actually buy such actually book.
There were a few other things, though, that I didn't really like. There were certain things that were introduced toon quickly or too early, and should have had more foreshadowing. I'm also a little sick of the "evil/abusive/negligent foster parents who's only doing it for the money" trope- most foster parents are actually perfectly nice people who foster kids because they want to help.
The characters also felt too shallow. Claire obviously had a lot of trauma from her past, but the story didn't use this to help develop or deepen her character the way other stories do. Logan is a loner- that's all we know about his personality. His family, his friends, his past- we know all that, but his varied personality traits and character development? Hardly present all the all. Also, their relationship didn't really develop in a way that made sense. It was just "we're the main characters so obviously we fall in love", but doesn't go much deeper.
The plot is intriguing, if a bit rushed, and I'm looking forward to reading more of the series and watching it develop.

Logan Fairmont is a dragon shifter and knows that there is something special about Claire Pratton when he is asked by the Headmistress for Imperium University, Magda Herensy to get her. For Claire she has lived a lot of her life in fear of her foster-dad who has abused her and treated her like a prisoner.

There is something special about Claire that she is needing to keep secret but when the Dark Watch attacks the University will they discover what they are after? Is there a traitor at the school who will risk the lives of everyone for one?

This was a good paranormal story with mystery and some love as well!

Logan knew after meeting Claire that she was special but he needs to be careful not to let anyone else know. He cares a lot about her and has suspicions about what she really is but is afraid to let anyone else know what is going on.

Claire was trusting but at the same time had her guard up due to her past. She knew that she could trust her roommate Lacy Jennings but was wary of Victor DeVenoss, a water serpent. Claire was unsure about her foster brother, Blake, but he was always there for her growing up.

I loved the twists in the book with Claire and I definitely did not see the ending coming but I really liked how Logan did what he could to protect Claire.

This is the first book in the series and I am interested to see what comes next.

Overall, I enjoyed this, and found it to be just different enough to hold my interest. I wasn't a huge fan of how timid and passive the heroine is - her constantly fleeing everything got old quickly. I have my fingers crossed that show grows out of that FAST now that she is at the university.

This is a solid paranormal romance series. Kids going away to a school to discover and control their powers ala Shadow Falls, Vampire Academy, House of Night, etc., and there are elements or plot points from those series that will pop up in this one. That said, this doesn't come across as a rip off of another series. The series also tries to go with some mythical creatures as its main characters. Maybe it's just because David Boreanaz, Alexander
Skarsgard, Joe Manganiello, and the like haven't embodies these particular creatures but I just having a hard time being drawn to these particular types of shifters.

Mild spoilers ahead:

There was a brief flirtation with a potential love triangle, but it was really just the introduction of characters who could be this and then nothing ever came of it. While Claire doesn't rush into being in love with Logan, not having any sort of interest in other guys is a little bit of a let down.

The school seems shady as f***. The contract they have students sign without informing them of the consequences and their means of dealing with trouble makers...this could be on purpose, the school could be a big bad the gang will go on to fight against, but if the school isn't intended to be a big bad in the future this really took me out of the story. It's hard to rally behind an organization like this.

At a loss here

I'm not sure how to rate this one, honestly. I read through it twice before I decided to leave a review. The writing is ok. The story line is a cross between Harry Potter and X-Men meets the Cinderella/Little Mermaid. Victor is a bad Draco character who just happens to embody the house emblem of Slytherin. Logan is as hotheaded as his Wolverine counterpart and just as eager to fight. Claire has little fight, but a knockabout of the foster system tends to result in 1 of 2 outcomes: a fighter or a doormat. The headmistress reminds me of an odd mishmash of a feminine Dumbledore, a crochety McGonagall and a touch of Umbridge- what with that pen and all. There are even 4 houses in the school and a sorting crystal. Oh, and a dark forest if sorts, too. A bald Hagrid type character, as well. The Dark Watch sect is different, though, as they aren't dark wizards and witches. I'm trying not to do a complete spoiler here. The writing itself isn't bad. It was just all the comparisons that kept pulling me out of the story. There are some interesting differences thrown in there that could lead down some intriguing paths. I guess I'll have to see when the next book comes out.

Cliff hanger so beware

This could be the start of an good story, it has great potential and interesting characters and plot. But... it is the start of a series with a continuing storyline and cliff hangers. As such, still to early to tell whether this will be worth it or not, depends on where the author goes with the story.

I really hate series books. You're enticed with a free or 99 cent book only to realize that it's a series and you have to wait for the next installment, which is always more expensive, to find out what happens.

I'll do what I always do ... Wait for the entire series to be completed and published then read the reviews. If it stands up to my initial impression i'll purchase when the price drops. I'm the same way with t.v. series that have ongoing stories. ... I'll wait till the season ends then binge watch on demand or prime video.

Wish every series book with a continuing storyline was required to state that fact in the description as well as the number of planned books in the series.

The 4 stars is four this first book and the potential it shows. If and when I read the rest of the series, I will update my rating.

“Dragons, magic, and more...”

Ok, I will admit that KR Thompson lured me in right there.

Claire Pratten, the lead character, is s fascinating one. Her background story is pretty horrid but it’s a real pleasure seeing her grow, really bloom, once dragon shifter Logan Fairmont finds her and brings her to Imperium University (aka Shifter’s U) to train her and hopefully learn exactly what she is (which readers will indeed find out, and it’s a doozy). This is a wonderful book. The characters, both Claire, Logan and Claire’s ”Scooby Gang” (sorry folks, I’m a Buffy The Vampire Slayer fan: trust me that’s a complementary thing to label a group), and the nastier folks encountered and dealt with, are uniformly beautifully drafted, with nicely done layers and complexity. That’s actually an equally good description for the plot as well, and for the really well done world-building. My only real complaint is where it leaves Logan in its “Happily Enough for Now” ending. I’m going to gate having to wait for book 2 to see what’s next.

Highly recommended.

Shifter's University is a YA shifter/romance story. One the one hand, it's kind of sweet...teen love, learning to accept yourself for who you are and finding your place in the world. On the other hand, there is domestic violence, hate crime and betrayal. Some weighty issues there.

I like that there are so many different kinds of shifters in one story and that most of them are accepting of their differences, enough so that they help each other out. I also like that Claire is learning to stand up for herself.

What I loathe is cliffhangers (especially when the next book isn't ready yet)...and this one ended on a major one. I don't mind some loose threads for the next book but I felt like I got cut short just when things were getting good. Grr. That's why I gave it 3 instead of 4 stars.

For those who want to know: There were only one or two cuss words in this one and a little bit of violence (mostly told not shown-nothing graphic).

I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

This book has a To Be Continued ending.

For me this almost had a prequel style feeling, it was mostly setup for the arc that will happen in later books. It does a decent job of laying the ground work for future books, introducing the characters and the world-building. But for me I wasn't really engaged in the story until the later part of the book and then it ended. The build-up was so long and when the ending didn't give me any sort of closure. I felt like I was left with too many questions to rate this story higher. I don't mind some loose ends in a series arc, but this felt like nothing was really wrapped up.

I'd still be interested in reading more of this series, but I'm hoping for a bit more closure in future books.

I actually give this book 3.5 stars. Shifter's university was an interesting read. The plot was well mapped out, it was generally well written as a whole, and the characters weren't too annoying, which is always a plus. However, it didn't really find myself connecting with the characters either. I didn't hate them, but I also didn't love them. I also didn't love the amount of cliché's this book had. There was the cliché love story, the cliché roommate/best friend, the cliché betrayals, etc. I know it's practically impossible to write a book and not have at least one cliché, but this book had so many, I practically predicted everything that happened. So while I still enjoyed Shifter's University, I would have liked for there to be some sort of twist at some point.

A Dragon Finds a Fox and More

I very much enjoyed the book. However, there is a rather large cliffhanger at the end. Although, the aftermath set things up well for the next book. The book is told in first person from the alternating points of view of Logan and Claire. Claire is in an abusive home with her Foster Father. She seems unable to protect herself other than to run away. Logan, a dragon shifter, wants to protect her and helps her to be accepted in Imperium University. Things are not as safe as originally thought, as the Black Watch attacks the university. The two main characters are compelling and sympathetic as they struggle to find themselves. I look forward to the next book.

With Claire getting abused from her foster dad, hour only protector is her foster brother, Jarred, who isn't home very often. He's involved in a gang of some sort, so Claire thinks. Her friend Hadley, convinces Logan, a dragon shifter and someone who attends Shifter's University to get the headmistress to enroll Claire. After all, she needs help controlling her shifting. Danger is looming at Shifter's U with the Dark Watch and Claire holds a secret. Is she the reason for the attacks? Or is there someone more powerful than her? Loved this story and can't wait for the next book in this series!
