Fascinating epistolary novel about a woman in her early 40s who is struggling with perimenopause ("hysteria", tears, anxiety, other hormone issues) and the loss of her value as her childbearing years end (and she had no children) and her beauty fades.
I had never heard of this famous Danish author, and the book is over 100 years old, but it is still completely relevant, even though she is upper middle class, she has friends, discussed in detail, who are not as fortunate as she.
It is entirely possible that only women over age 40 will truly appreciate this work.

Cercando informazioni su uno dei libri che mi erano rimasti più impressi durante la mia infanzia, mi sono imbattuta in questa autrice danese, Karin Michaëlis, e ho scoperto un intero mondo.
Scrittrice, drammaturga e giornalista femminista, cosmopolita, pacifista, nacque nel 1872. Ha scritto per bambini, adolescenti e adulti con un’attenzione rivoluzionaria verso l’universo femminile, si è schierata dalla parte dei più deboli, comprendendo da subito il pericolo del nazismo e fascismo che si profilavano all’inizio negli anni 30. Questo le costò la messa al bando dei suoi libri e della sua persona in Germania, paese con cui aveva forti legami. Rimase però legata a molte personalità della cultura tedesca come Bertolt Brecht di cui è stata amica e ispirazione. I suoi romanzi di formazione con protagonista l’adolescente Bibi ispireranno anche un’altra famosissima autrice per l’infanzia, Astrid Lindgren, autrice di Pippi Calzelunghe.
Esiliata negli USA a seguito dell’invasione nazista della Danimarca, Karin Michaëlis tornò dopo la guerra in Danimarca dove rimase in ristrettezze economiche fino alla sua morte nel 1950.
Con una tale biografia, mi è venuta la curiosità di conoscere meglio questa autrice e leggere altro.
L’età pericolosa è il suo romanzo più conosciuto e tradotto all’estero. La sua protagonista, Elsie, è una donna ricca, intelligente e bella che arrivata alla soglia dei quarant’anni decide di ribellarsi a suo modo alle convenzioni di un’agiata vita borghese: lascia il marito, sposato per convenienza vent'anni prima, rifiuta un giovane spasimante del quale è tuttavia innamorata, e si ritira a vivere su un’isola sperduta con una cuoca e un’enigmatica giovane domestica come uniche compagne.
Attraverso i suoi diari e le sue lettere, il lettore scopre l’inquietudine, l’insoddisfazione, le paure di Elsie che si trova a fronteggiare la fine della giovinezza e si dibatte tra il desiderio di libertà e di vivere finalmente per se stessa, e la necessità di avere delle relazioni umane e un uomo al suo fianco.
Tutte filtrate attraverso il prisma delle impressioni e della corrispondenza della protagonista, si intrecciano le storie di tanti altri personaggi femminili che in qualche modo rappresentano tutte le diverse vite e le diverse possibilità che una donna può aspettarsi di avere. Uno degli aspetti su cui si insiste nel libro è la mancanza di sincerità: una donna, per avere una vita tranquilla e per essere rispettata, non può mai essere pienamente se stessa. Il prezzo della sincerità è una vita ai margini o una diagnosi di follia con orribili conseguenze, come l’ospedalizzazione e il suicidio.
A dispetto dello stile comprensibilmente antiquato, la spietata capacità di introspezione e l’ironia di Elsie rendono questo breve romanzo di più di cent’anni fa ancora attuale, verosimile e godibile.

Elsie Lindtner reaches middle age and realise she does not want to continue her marriage which has become a platonic friendship over time. She divorces her husband and moves to an island with two servants. We share her thoughts and movements on the island through a series of letters and diary entries as she tells of various women struggling in middle age. There is no happily ever after, but it is well-written and one can understand why it caused a sensation more than a century ago.

It's not often that I wave the black flag at a book, but I am abandoning this at 40% because it's just much too problematic and emotionally manipulative for me to deal with, in light of the fact that it reads pretty badly, presumably stuff got lost in translation from Danish since 1910 when this was published but...
"It may be safely said that on the whole surface of the globe not one man exists who really knows a woman. If a woman took infinite pains to reveal herself to a husband or a lover just as she really is, he would think she was suffering from some incurable mental disease.
Men can be sincere both with themselves and others but women cannot. They are corrupted from birth.
Woman's modesty differs entirely from that of a male. She would rather be guilty of incest than reveal to a man the hidden thoughts which sometimes she will confide to another woman."

Quando conosciamo Elsie Lindtner si è trasferita da poco in un’enorme “Villa Bianca” su un’isola lontana da tutto e da tutti. Riusciamo difficilmente a penetrare nella mente della donna e solo in alcuni, piccoli e dolorosi barlumi di verità, che traspaiono dal suo diario, dalle sue lettere e dalle riflessioni che affollano la sua mente ora che è completamente sola e priva di impegni.
L’immagine che ne ricaviamo, dunque, è frammentaria, piena di lacune, di segreti e di riserbo. Il pudore della donna, dunque, si rifrange anche sulla sua vita intima, lasciando il lettore pieno di dubbi, incapace di comprendere quanto Elsie possa essere attendibile come narratrice della sua stessa storia.
Sembra che la sua scelta di bruciare tutti i ponti con la vita passata sia stata deliberata: arrivata a un’età che per una donna sembra un limbo inconoscibile, un passo sull’abisso senza che questo sia ancora visibile, Elsie ha deciso di divorziare dal marito – un uomo che la adorava e che le aveva garantito una stabile sicurezza economica – e di allontanarsi da amici e parenti per ritirarsi in una villa costruita secondo le sue esigenze e i suoi desideri.
Pur essendo stata progettata interamente per lei, la Villa non sembra appartenerle davvero e la solitudine pesa su Elsie come un macigno, mentre la mente non riesce a porre un freno ai pensieri, ai flashback della sua vita passata, alle immagini delle persone che l’hanno circondata fino a quel momento, ai legami che ancora l’attirano a Copenhagen.

A woman divorces her husband, with premeditation - she has prepared (with unwitting help of the man she thinks she might love) a white villa on an island, where she retires with two servants. Through letters, we also meet other women, who made other choices. The timelessness of the inner workings of women of a certain age contrast with the definitely upper class early twentieth century perspective. This was really a discovery, made me think about Woman in a Polar Night, which takes retreating from society to an even further extreme.

Ny roman-form for mig - veksler mellem fiktionelle breve og dagbogsoptegnelser. Den korte roman tegner et billede af en kvinde i fyrrerne i Danmark omkring år 1900 efter hun har truffet en stor livsbeslutning om at lade sig skille fra sin mand efter mere end 20 års ægteskab. Tematiserer overgangsalderen, feminitet, seksualitet og selvrealisering i en tid hvor alle de emner var kontroversielle fra en 'kvindeperspektiv'. Teksten føltes frisk og levende. Forfatteren har tilladt hovedpersonen, Elsie Lindtner, at fremstå kompleks uden at indlade sig på at idealisere karaktertræk, hvillet gør det interessant at lære Elsie bedre at kende gennem bogens forskellige stadier.

I really liked this book. I can't say I would have picked it up for pleasure reading. However, reading for a Lit class was an excellent introduction to Karin Michaelis. She's extraordinary with description and gives an honest account of the inner workings of a woman (even some things hold true today).
At first I was a little put off with how horrible Elsie seems. But the more I read, the more I sort of liked and respected her even if I didn't always like the things she said or thought. She's selfish, to be sure, but brutally honest with herself.
I don't know that I would recommend this book just for fun, but it certainly is lovely writing. I wish I could read in Danish so that I may read the non-translated version, as I'm sure it is even better.

4.5 Normally it is difficult for me to get into books written before the 1940s or 50s. There is something about the language that puts me off. However, this book is hilarious and hugely relateable and relevant today. I loved it and recommend it to women over 35 everywhere.

At first I wondered what the point of this story was and I am not 100% sure what the take away was at the end, although that can be really enjoyable as it makes me contemplate the book more than other, but as I read on I was stunned at how much I could relate. She believe she wanted and could handle living a life of solitude. She believed that she was more in tuned with people's true motives than they were themselves aware. She was a bit arrogant in these beliefs and in the end she was wrong, wrong, wrong. I have been living a pretty solitary life the last couple years and she and I had/have a lot of the same thoughts and desires. She believes this is the way all older woman think. Hmm, contemplative, fun book.

Fedt at få et kæmpe chok over hvor intenst og relevant for min tid Karin Michaëlis skrev i 1910.
Sproget er selvfølgelig særdeles anderledes nu. Men Michaëlis skriver så smukt om de svære kønslige og aldersprovokerede forhold i livet, at det får hårene til at rejse sig i dag.
Tag en pause fra nutiden og synk hen i hendes liv for 110 år siden. Kæmpe anbefaling.

Elsie har mange spændende betragtninger og man får et godt indblik i hvordan overgangsalderen og kvinders seksualitet har været tabubelagte emner på den tid.
Der er noget dragende ved Elsies beslutning om at prøve ensomheden af og både skildringen af hende og de andre kvinder hun skriver til og omtaler, viser hvor meget kvinder er gået på kompromis for at passe ind i samfundets forventninger om giftemål og børn - heldigvis er der opgør på vej. Her er Michaëlis også med til at gøre op med forestillingen om hvordan kvinder er og hvordan de burde være.

Кратичък роман за жена в "опасна възраст" (42-43 години), която не знае какво и кого точно иска, но пък ги иска веднага. Избягала от света на един остров, тя скучае, съжалява, анализира, наставлява, разчепква хора и събития и така - 70 страници (които оставят усещането за 700) писма и депресиращи или доскучаващи разсъждения...

Man får et godt indblik i de forhold datidens borgerlige kvinder levede under. Hovedpersonen er på vej mod klimakteriet, og hun ser det som sidste mulighed at leve alene for at få plads til at være sig selv. Det har og får konsekvenser for hendes sociale status.
