The provocative title is actually very clever, in that the first word can be construed as either an adjective AND/or a verb. In truth though, the entire play is quite good, a modern, VERY loose adaptation of Schnitzler's La Ronde, set in the contemporary gay milieu. The character 'types' are pretty much the same as in the original, and the dialogues ring true and give each actor plenty with which to play.
[Fun fact: in perusing the cast lists, I noticed the role of Sammy was originated in the London premiere production by an actor I had interviewed 20 years ago when I was the Theatre Critic for Marin's LGBT newspaper, The Slant. Anyone for a chorus of 'It's a Small World'?]
I initially picked up this book thinking it was a how-to guide, but wow, it turned out to be a fantastic read. It's the first play I've read this year. "F*cking Men" dives into the lives of ten American gay men, exploring how they navigate promiscuous sex to satisfy their desires for both physical and emotional connection.
The play is made up of a series of short scenes that depict various sexual encounters involving characters like a hustler, soldier, grad student, college student, husband, wife, porn star, playwright, actor, and journalist. These scenes show how they pursue anonymous sexual encounters. The play is a modern take on "La Ronde" and is a vibrant exploration of gay culture.
