It gives an approach as to what is really street photography. Learned from the author that sometimes street photography requires a lot of patience and anticipation to catch the right moment. Also to consider the human element in the composition.
A good friend of mine recently pointed me to the work of Vivian Maier's street photography and I really loved her work. I wanted to find a book that gave me basic handles on the art of photography, and I landed on this book. The first half offers helpful guidelines and general rules of what makes a successful shot. The second half was a commentary on a ton of the author's own work. Overall a helpful introduction.
This book is like a conversation with an old friend who gives you a practical and honest advice. It just happened to be a topic about craft edging on art. I liked that the book is split in two parts: first, Valerie talks about techniques, then she moves on to her best pictures and what made them special to her. Fun and easy, I followed her advice on the next trip and my own photos became stronger.
Greatly enjoyed the first part with technical side of things and assignments to train the skills described, but mostly leafed through the part with specific stories behind featured photographs by the author as they felt excessively descriptive in ways that didn’t help envision myself capturing better stories on my camera.
First part was ok, but I don’t appreciate the second very much, because it contains just photos which are very beautiful and stories behind them. But that’s not what I was waiting for when buying the book.
A practical guide, filled with insight. I read in in two sittings on a car trip, and now keep it handy as a quick reference for good. better. best practices in street shooting.
