Brandilyn Collins is a best-selling novelist known for her trademark Seatbelt Suspense®--fast-paced, character-driven suspense with myriad twists and an interwoven thread of faith.
Brandilyn is also known for her distinctive book on fiction-writing techniques, Getting Into Character: Seven Secrets a Novelist Can Learn From Actors (John Wiley & Sons). She is a sought-after teacher and speaker at writers' conferences.
The latest thrill ride from Collins has so many twists and turns that readers will be left breathless! What starts as a rather benign story rapidly turns into a nightmare for the main character. Although it is nerve-wracking to watch Cara get increasingly embroiled in an unimaginable situation, and readers may want to yell at her for being so naive, all of those elements are necessary to reach the heart-pounding conclusion. Cara Westling is finally free of her abusive marriage and has moved to a small town in Idaho with her 13-year-old daughter Riley in order to make a fresh start. Cara gets a job with financial adviser J.L. Larrett, a pillar of the community. A couple of weeks into the job, a woman comes into the office and J.L. strangles her. He coerces Cara into helping him deal with the body. As the investigation into the woman's disappearance progresses, Cara finds herself drawn deeper and deeper into the deception. Is there any way out?
She has such a way with telling a story! I’ve had this in my to read queue on my kindle for a little while. I started it and from the first few pages it grabs you. I kept thinking how in the world is the main character going to get out of this?!?!
She is one of my favorite authors and I am always amazed at how good her stories are.
This book had me from chapter one. I highly recommend it.
Bad people can spot those who have been through the wringer and they know how to use them to their advantage. The main character has been through tough times, and despite her best efforts, she is used again. Her life becomes a living nightmare. One can't help but realize that they can't judge her. Would any of us do better under the circumstances forced upon her? The parallels between her story and her daughter's are interesting as well.
This is a fast-paced book. You want to know what will happen next, yet you don't want it to end!
The book title is given much more meaning and significance as the story goes along.
Cara Westling has suffered abuse from her father and former husband. She and her daughter have moved to a small town, and she has a new job. She determines to make a decent life for her self and her thirteen-year-old daughter, Riley. Unfortunately, Riley is being bullied at school and on social media. Cara is drawn into a cover up by her boss, who threatens her if she doesn’t stay silent about what she knows. The situation continues to go downhill for Cara. This story is intense. I could hardly stand to put it down, and I could hardly stand to continue. If you like suspense that builds with every chapter, you will like this book. I did.
Brandilyn Collins delivers another seatbelt suspense she is so well known for. This book is told from the viewpoint of Cara Westling, a woman who has suffered abuse her whole life. After her abusive husband left her for another, Cara moves to a small town with her 13 year old daughter to get a fresh start. Before she knows it, she finds herself back in the hands of a manipulative man and is forced to reconcile what lengths she will go to in order to protect her daughter. Full of exciting twists and turns, this one keeps you turning pages!
This is my least-favorite book by Brandilyn Collins. If you haven’t read her work before, I recommend starting with another title of hers. The plot was clever, but I was highly disappointed with the way she carried it out. I found it shallow and far-fetched when it didn’t have to be. I forced myself to finish it because it was a Christmas gift from my husband... and one I had specifically requested! As a side note, I think the author missed a wonderful opportunity to put emphasis on a key spiritual principle. If you read the book, you’ll probably guess what I’m referring to.
I loved this book. It drew me in into the life of Cara who accepted a job offer and how she was drawn into the life of a respected citizen who was the most brilliant man for getting away with crimes. He passed his trait down to his daughter who wanted a scape goat for Cara's daughter. It actually scared me thinking of all the things that we hide or was hidden in someone we know. Granted they aren't as bad as murder but we find ourselves sucked into. Its a good example of how we must take our own stand in life.
I just finished The Innocent before this and thought it was the best murder thriller i've read i. a long time. Boy was I wrong.. The Innocent was really good but it doesn't even come close to this book. It starts out slow but picks up fast and doesn't stop until the very end. I started this book two days ago only having read the first two chapters. Picked it back up last night expecting to just get through a few more and ended up finishing it reading the rest of the 42 chapters without stopping. Such an amazing read.
Brandilyn Collins has done it again, produced another nail biter true to her trademark Seatbelt Suspense. Caught in a trap, Cara must figure out a way to survive without endangering her 13 year old daughter's life. She sees her daughter suffering from school bullies, much as she herself suffered from spousal abuse until her husband left with another woman. This book is a page turner and an excellent read.
I have always loved to read books by Brandilyn. All the books I have read by this Author have been page turners, some more than others. This book was an extreme page turner, can't put down book. Cara was put in an extreme circumstances by her boss, and seemingly unable to do anything about what she was made to do. I don't want to state to many of the facts, because I don't want to give anything away. Just get this book and read it for yourself.
This book reminded me of why I love Brandilyn Collins so much. Cara's new boss just killed someone. And he's making her help hide the body. She has no one to turn to. I'm pretty hard on characters that find themselves in these type of situations. Why didn't they just call the police? Run away? etc. But Collins has Cara tightly trapped and I was right with her every step of the way. (At least for the 2 hours it took me to finish the book...)
Collins pits a battered divorced mom against a manipulative employer in this wrenching novel. The question asked at the story's heart will grip any parent: what would you do to protect your child? In Collins' skilled hands, the reader is along for the ride on a traumatic journey into the deepest pit of human nature.
Edge of your seat suspense! I read it in one seating because l couldn't put it down. Ms. Collins is an excellent wordsmith. I felt the honest, raw emotion of Cara and her daughter as they tried to escape the circumstances that were spiraling out of control around them.
Chilling and suspenseful right from the beginning. Brandilyn Collins' books are not ones I like to read just before trying to sleep at night, and this one was no exception! Cara is a newcomer in town. A single mom doing all she can to give her daughter a good life. And then everything goes horribly wrong.
As someone who has read almost all of Blackstock's novels, this one felt different than the others. As a single mom, I felt every inkling of fear for my daughter that Cara felt for Riley. I kept wondering how she would manage to unravel herself. Great story! Great ending!
Brandilyn Collins once again takes you on an emotional roller coaster as you find out what Cara would do to protect her daughter. The characters are compelling and the storyline is intense! Highly recommend!
As with all of Brandilyn's books, I read this in two days! She is so easy to read and you always want the minnow what happens so you can't put it down. This particular book wasn't as suspenseful as I had hoped and have come to expect from her, but it was a good read.
Brace yourself for a roller coaster ride in which you will cling to the edge of your seat as you wait to see what happens next. Plummet is a suspense that will keep you up late at night in anticipation of the next plot twist and it will not disappoint.
This story was absolutely fantastic. I come not stop reading it. 's. Collins did everything right in describing the main characters, their personalities, and how they would respond to their stressors. The suspense was thick in this book. I read it in just a few hours!
Brandilyn Collins..always a good clean read! Edge of your seat suspense for sure!! This book has manipulation, murder and a teens anguish with bullying. Definitely worth the read.
As Good As I Expected from One of My Favorite Authors
Character development excellent as with all her books. There's action from the first paragraphs. And the ending doesn't disappoint with its twist! Absolutely recommend!
Oh my goodness. What would make you do something morally wrong and terrible? Cara had to make that choice. Would her choice have been different if her background had been different? This is definitely a sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat book. Start it only if you have a block of time to read!
This book was crazy suspenseful…and stressful all at the same time. I could not put it down and wanted to put it down all at the same time! The main characters choices were due to being manipulated - surprising ending.
This was a heart thumping, riveting read. Kept me on the edge of my seat for real. It really showed me how deep things can get but we are never too far gone from the love of Jesus.
I don’t think I’ve ever binge read a book so quickly, only took me a few hours. I haven’t read a Brandilyn Collins book in over a decade since I was a kid and read the Kanner Lake series. This did not disappoint!
I have read many mystery books, but this story was different from any others. What will a mother do to save her child? Many, many things. Really good read.
