Arab terrorists in Brooklyn connect with the Russian mafia in Brighton Beach and the NYPD’s Captain Jimmy Gallagher wants to know why. He catches a glimpse of – he’s not sure what. But before he can piece it together, the FBI steps in and calls him off. Vladimir Shorotov, Russian Godfather and ex KGB head has a professional relationship with the feds. But Gallagher won’t leave it alone. He goes rogue and winds up suspended. In the end, Jimmy alone realizes the insidious nature of the connection. Shorotov has fronted the services of a thousand Caucasian Muslims from Chechnya to the Islamic terror cell in Brooklyn. Head On is the ultimate confrontation between terror and law and order. It is realized when thousands of well-wishers crowd onto Manhattan’s Pier 92 to see the historic passing of the torch from the QE2 to the QM2. A terrorist’s rocket is fired from New Jersey and over 2,000 passengers and crew break the all-time evacuation record. What follows is how the NYPD closed ranks and faced off with the terrorists who came to wreak havoc in New York City.
Really enjoyed this book! If you like Vince Flynn's - Mitch Rapp and Brad Thor's - Scot Horvath characters you will love John Monaghan's - Jimmy Gallagher. Highly recommend!
The book is a work of fiction grounded in possible events. John Monaghan writes for several different audiences on several different levels within one story, something that is extremely hard to do. The book was entertaining for a retired law enforcement officer (LEO), while easily readable for the general public. The story has some inside terms, references and allusions that are fun for LEOs but still open enough for those without a law enforcement background. The book is fast paced and intriguing, I read it in two sittings over a weekend. The characters are well developed in a short time, well fleshed out not the usual one-dimensional good guy/bad guy. The plot is multi-faceted and not a simple good vs evil. The author crafts a story that is complete but entices you to await the next installment. I was lost in the story until it was over, leaving me wanting more. The story could easily translate into a television/Netflix mini-series or movie series. I would prefer the mini-series treatment to preserve the character development.
What a brilliant idea, shame it never lived up to the idea. I found it disjointed. The story didn't flow. It seemed as if too much was crammed into to short a story. The end was disappointing as side issues pushed the main plot to one side.
