A great introduction to Motivational Interviewing. This book describes the core skills and offers a wide range of examples. The part I enjoyed most is that after each chapter there is a variety of exercises suggested so as to increase the actual skill of motivational interviewing, not just the knowledge.

This is one of those books that while I may have finished reading, I will go back to time and time again to focus on specific ideas and improve my practice.

The fifth book on MI that I’ve read recently and I have to say that this is the best so far. Great examples and exercises to help you grasp the concepts of MI.

I was only broadly familiar with Motivational Interviewing before reading this book, and I found it so, so helpful. It was to the point and very practical. Each chapter gives explanations of the MI Skills being discussed, examples of how to use them, a concept quiz to ensure that you understand them, an example of the skills used within a therapy session, and several pages of exercises to allow for more practice and tailoring the skills to fit your specific counseling style. I'll admit that I didn't really engage with the practice activities at the end of each chapter, but would like to go back to them on another occasion because they also seemed very well done. I'd imagine that this would be a great supplemental workbook for a professor teaching a class on Motivational Interviewing. If you're feeling stuck in your work and you're not too familiar with MI, give this a shot! It has helped me rethink the way that I respond to clients.

A highly practical skills book, that is full of applied activities. You can work through in any order. I've attended several courses in MI which often tend focus of the concepts and theory and rely on presentation of information as the main strategy for learning. I got the more in depth skills practice I was looking for in this book. It's a fantastic way to build your skills in a self-paced manner, however it does require that you can work independently and without the structure of a course.

Set goals, sort Options, Arrive at a plan, Reaffirm and strengthen commitment, and Support change
