After a hair-raising flight from Elatha, Michael and his allies find themselves holed up in a remote region in Fjorgyn, surrounded by potential enemies. They must rid themselves of the threat of an unfriendly horde of goblins while they discover the reasons behind a dire threat in the forested realm around them. They must do all this while feeling alone and abandoned in this harsh world. Although he wants nothing more to do with going underground and constantly fighting for his life, the threat of a pursuing Elathian army headed by the cruel king, Ankou Levent, requires Michael jump into action to protect his allies, his friends, and Clifford, the man he loves. It isn't long until they hear rumors of a demonic beast plaguing the countryside, corrupting harmless creatures and bending them to its will. Michael leaps into action to protect his allies and to discover the sinister secret behind this beast's sudden arrival.
So far have enjoyed this series very much. As a rabid WoW player and playing the occasional D&D game this series was just my cup of tea. I like that Castiglione does Michael's character/ spell upgrades often but not every chapter. The flow of the story is great. It's a slow building story but there is still a lot going on and there are no cliffhangers at the end of each book. I gave 4 stars because of the occasional typo. And also a couple of times a sentence would start in past tense and then midway through use a present tense word. Which would throw me off for a few seconds ( this was really only in the first book, but still a few typos in the second). Can't wait till the next book.
Michael has fully settled into his new life in Fjorgyn. While it had previously been a virtual game for him, it has has ow become a reality. In the previous book, he and his lover Cilfford had led a group of slaves to escape from the city-state of Elatha to safety and their own independence of their own. Now, it is time to help make their new community safe and secure. That means establishing sources of food and water as well as rebuilding the crumbling architecture.
Michael and his friends will also have to secure the area. Not far away is a community of elves who are aware of a dark threat to the area's forests, and there is alos a goblin civil war that seems to be creating an issue nearby as well. Michael, Clifford and their allies, old and new, will find themselves taking on this challege to help make their community as safe and secure.
This was a really intersting and fun read. The characters are definitely developing further, both in their literary and game player aspects. I do believe this woudl be a fun read for role-play gamers. I know that I am defintiely looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
After reading a few epic fantasy books I was looking for something easy and enjoyable. I definitely found that with these books. Also being a bit of a gamer I really enjoyed the authors take on what a world based on a mmorpg would be like.
Downsides are: still some grammatical errors, I also felt some word choices were oddly chosen (totally just my opinion of course)
Upsides: everything else. The authors voice is clear and descriptive and the pace is perfect.
This book makes me think about Dragon's Wrath and The Land series a little. Now that the protagonist and the others are out of the big city they start to develop their own place (Dragon's Wrath part mostly) but the MC has to go to take care of some big shot monsters and do adventuring (The Land). Unfortunately i still cannot give it a five star because i could not get into the series yet...
An improvement upon the first book, the added length helps develop the world and give the character’s arcs a sense of weight. I would have liked more in-depth settlement building as the mechanics seem very developed for how little part they play.
The sequel definitely improves on the first book. Michael and Clifford's relationship, the plot, and the action are far better in this book than they were in the first!
I'm excited to see where the third book takes the plot because I've already got a theory about the main antagonist and I'm curious to see whether I'm right or not.
The story itself is a solid 4.5 stars, but what brings it down for myself is the relationship between the two main male characters. I do not enjoy reading about two man in a gay relationship, which is why I skipped over many sections in the book. This book is written for the gay community, which is fine, if the book had an disclaimer on it.
