Rajneesh (born Chandra Mohan Jain, 11 December 1931 – 19 January 1990) and latter rebranded as Osho was leader of the Rajneesh movement. During his lifetime he was viewed as a controversial new religious movement leader and mystic.
In the 1960s he traveled throughout India as a public speaker and was a vocal critic of socialism, Mahatma Gandhi, and Hindu religious orthodoxy.
Rajneesh emphasized the importance of meditation, mindfulness, love, celebration, courage, creativity and humor—qualities that he viewed as being suppressed by adherence to static belief systems, religious tradition and socialization.
In advocating a more open attitude to human sexuality he caused controversy in India during the late 1960s and became known as "the sex guru".
In 1970, Rajneesh spent time in Mumbai initiating followers known as "neo-sannyasins". During this period he expanded his spiritual teachings and commented extensively in discourses on the writings of religious traditions, mystics, and philosophers from around the world. In 1974 Rajneesh relocated to Pune, where an ashram was established and a variety of therapies, incorporating methods first developed by the Human Potential Movement, were offered to a growing Western following. By the late 1970s, the tension between the ruling Janata Party government of Morarji Desai and the movement led to a curbing of the ashram's development and a back taxes claim estimated at $5 million.
In 1981, the Rajneesh movement's efforts refocused on activities in the United States and Rajneesh relocated to a facility known as Rajneeshpuram in Wasco County, Oregon. Almost immediately the movement ran into conflict with county residents and the state government, and a succession of legal battles concerning the ashram's construction and continued development curtailed its success.
In 1985, in the wake of a series of serious crimes by his followers, including a mass food poisoning attack with Salmonella bacteria and an aborted assassination plot to murder U.S. Attorney Charles H. Turner, Rajneesh alleged that his personal secretary Ma Anand Sheela and her close supporters had been responsible. He was later deported from the United States in accordance with an Alford plea bargain.[
After his deportation, 21 countries denied him entry. He ultimately returned to India and a revived Pune ashram, where he died in 1990. Rajneesh's ashram, now known as OSHO International Meditation Resort and all associated intellectual property, is managed by the Zurich registered Osho International Foundation (formerly Rajneesh International Foundation). Rajneesh's teachings have had a notable impact on Western New Age thought, and their popularity has increased markedly since his death.
A well structured book, flowing step by step from body to soul, chasing the ego. Osho's impressive story telling makes esoteric spiritual concepts easy to understand. A must read for all seekers, to tune the veena of their hearts, and manifest the music of love within. I read not more than 3 pages per day. Even reading a single chapter is so liberating and powerful. In the last chapter, Osho demystifies Love and Ego (the illusion of "I") and asks us to be an Emperor and not a beggar, because by begging for love you can never get it. What more can I say, read the book and find out for yourself!
This book definitely has some value to it, but I spent a lot of time sorting through garbage to find the gems. I suppose that this text is technically not a ‘book’ in the way that it is transcribed from Osho’s lectures - and perhaps the teachings are better delivered that way. Still, I found many of the lessons to be cherry-picked from other teachers/gurus/philosophers, then delivered in a way that suits his own agenda.
"E io vi saluto con la speranza e la preghiera a Dio che ciascuno di voi sia benedetto al punto da liberarsi dalla malattia dell'io e che ciascuno di voi sia benedetto al punto da scoprire ciò che è già presente in lui."
2.5 Not only was this the very first spiritual/religious book that I've read in my life, but also I hadn't ever heard of Osho or his ideas on spirituality before discovering it. I decided to read it even though I absolutely didn't know what to expect, simply because I wanted to learn more about meditation and, why not, how to understand my Self on a deeper level. The book met my expectations: at the end of the chapters, Osho explains his meditation technique and gives some simple tips for meditation newbies. On the one hand, since Osho explores a variety of very interesting concepts about humans and their minds, society and religion, this book provides very good hints for reflection. On the other hand, even if it was illuminating in some of its points, I wasn't convinced at all about most of Osho's ideas which, in my opinion, can also be extreme and somehow dangerous (to be violent with your own kids in order to grow them as Real Fearless Men? Thank you, but no.) So in the end I have very mixed feeling about this book: I feel like it can be both "food for mind" and potentially harmful at the same time. I just hope readers won’t take all of Osho's teachings in a literal way.
The inner journey is really nice to read. The concept of concentrating on navel (The life energy) is really true to feel. A person can realize himself only when he find time to travel within himself. it is necessary for every human being to find time for self realization, for knowing about their own character.
An awesome book. Great thoughts by Osho. The Osho way is really unique and it can be challenging for some people to understand as we all live in such a belief system where beliefs are being carried out from thousands of years and still being followed blindly, without questioning.
Book review of The inner journey by Osho I have read one book Osho before and also wrote a book review of him. I found his work interesting and also found great messages in his work. He was also a meditator and also told about the truth of life. This book of Osho is also amazing. This book tells us about the journey. The most important journey of life. Not the journey of traveling around the world but the journey of one's inner self. This journey is one of the most important journeys of oneself because of this journey one can find one ownself. This tells us that I have selected the main lessons of this book which I am going to share with you. The body is a part of humans and it is also one of the important parts. But humans are nowadays are focusing on the mind rather than the body. They are focusing on developing the mind so much that they forget about the body. I am not against the development of the mind but I believe that if one is doing something they should not forget the other necessities of life. People often don’t ever take notice of their body and they just use their body just for eating and for other things. Experience your body. All of us must know one's body. I will give you an example. If one is taking care of the leaves like cleaning the dust on them and wiping them and making them cleaned. The leaves will surely die. Because the leaves need something that will go inside them they need water. So for us, it is not important to make our body clean from the outside but we need to clean the body from the inside by going inside by ourselves. All of us need to take notice of this. Osho thought that the most important part of the body is the naval. He said that when a human is born the first thing is the naval that develops and makes the human complete. So he said that it is important for humans to reach there through meditation. If one is doing meditation one should keep in mind in the middle that is when meditating one should be able to keep the mind empty that is to clear one mind from every thought and also to remain awake at that time to be conscious that is how to keep the mind in the middle and then going through the body. Emotions are one of the important aspects of human life. People often think that emotions are dangerous. Yes, they are when the emotions start running your mind and life. But if you control emotions. Emotions can be efficient in one's life. Because emotions are sometimes used to handle tasks that are important in our life. But one needs to know every emotion in life. It is important. Because if one doesn’t know emotions they don’t know how to handle them how to use them. We need to know the emotions to fight with them. If one knows how to love, then one can love. If one knows what is fear then one can come to know how to fight this and how to overcome this. In Osho's point of view, love and hate are common just like the heat and cold. Like when the heat decreases it becomes cold and when the cold decreases it becomes heat. So in Osho's point of view, love and hate are just like this when the love decreases it becomes hate and when the hate decreases it becomes love. That’s why we need to know what is love and what is hate. Emotions I always believe are something we should call innate. Because at a young age we humans can develop emotions. When humans are growing up their mind is also growing up but how can at such young age emotions strike at them. I think that these emotions are already present in the mind and strike when the time comes. Observation is one of the most important things in human life and it is also very important for humans to observe in every field of life. They should not only observe the world but they should observe themselves. they should observe inside themselves. they should know their feelings and everything that is inside them. Through Osho’s point of view of life. The life connection of the child is the mother. Because the child comes into life after coming out from the mother's stomach. The child often cries a lot because the child is disconnected from the naval in the mother's stomach when the child comes into the world. When the child is detached from the naval and comes into life and in the world so the child cries. People often become worried that why the child is crying and want the child to not cry. In his point of view, the children need to cry because if the children do not cry it means that something is wrong with the child. He thought that friendships and love should be based on their naval of theirs. This means that if there are friends. Their friendship if the bond is very strong that is because of the love and same connection of the naval. Somehow maybe their naval has some connection with each other. Their naval maybe be the same in some way which is why their bond is good. But there are people who for no reason hate each other. There are these types of people who hate each other. That is maybe their naval are opposite from each other that causes hatred among them. He thought that the naval is the center of life and through the naval connection one can come to know the relationship of others. Breathing is also important in life. Humans need to breathe. But we don’t even observe breathing we are so deeply engaged in life that we forget the important parts of life. If we observe breathing we can find peace. We can come to know the beating of the nerves that are flowing our blood in the body. We can feel the energy inside the body. We can become calm and relaxed in our life because of just observing the breathing inside our bodies. Fear is a really dangerous part of life. Many people in this world including me have a lot of fear inside them and the fear can cause humans to not face the important challenges of the world. We need to tackle the fear inside our bodies. Because fear can cause danger in our life. It can make us not live our life properly. I am a big fan of Nietzsche one of the saying is “Live dangerously” maybe people find it not worthy but it is worthy by this he means that one should be able to live their life dangerously by taking risks and by overcoming these risks. He thought that people should be able to live dangerously by facing the challenges in life which they think can cause danger. Through this people can become strong and can come to defeat the challenges in life. Fearlessness is the presence of fear. One should be able to know the fear inside the body to understand it and then fight with it. And through this one can come to know the fear and can become fearless. The mind contains emotions inside and is capable of striking the emotions into humans but it also contains the capability to overcome and defeat them. Osho says that there is no tomorrow. By this, he means that there is no yesterday, no tomorrow only the present remains. Don’t think about tomorrow or yesterday focus on the present because that doesn’t exist in his point. People often worry about yesterday and tomorrow and often leave the present. It is important to know the present and to make the present wonderful that’s how one's tomorrow can become wonderful. Physical health is always important in past and also in the future. It is important no matter what. The scientific gadgets made our life lazy that we don’t know focus on our physical health and we stop doing physical work. Like exercise, walk. People should be able to connect themselves with the work. They should be able to do physical work. It can make our body and mind both too strong and it is also one of the connections to life. Because through working like exercise, walk we can make ourselves engage through nature and with ourselves too. Desire is one of the feelings in our life. It is important sometimes. That one desire. But one should desire for good not for bad. But desire alone is nothing but a feeling. Efforts are needed inside the life. Desire is good but nothing can happen with desire. The effort is needed to fulfill the desire. We in this world are in a race of finding others. We often study for masters in other fields of life. Especially in today's era humans are getting specialized in science and technology. That is excellent. But why don’t spend time knowing ourselves? We are the only ones who can go into the journey of life. Why talking to oneself is considered madness. Why sitting alone and thinking is considered dangerous? These are not dangerous but society and the world are making them dangerous. These are the ways to find ourselves. It is important to know ourselves in the world to go through the journey of life because otherwise, we will be in a lot of trouble in life. Through knowing ourselves one can come to know their emotions and feelings inside them. We need to know the emotions inside them. Because if we don’t come to know the emotions inside. We can be in a lot of trouble. When these emotions strike us and also start controlling one's minds. Knowing your mind should also be the task. Because the mind is the source that controls everything in life and if one doesn’t know the mind and doesn’t control it then it can automatically control one and can do whatever it wants. It is really important for us to important to understand the mind and to make it in our control. Today's world is a very wise individualist. We need to become wise. Not for today's world but it is important to become wise. Because without wisdom one cannot come to know the essential things in life. We need to become wise enough to lead a good life to not be in the trap of the world and to make wise and good decisions. In today's world sometimes selfishness is needed because people out of here are so unconscious that as much as you become good with them and they hate you more and use you. Everyone needs to be wise. We have to keep our minds healthy. It is important to make our minds healthy. By seeking the good things that make our minds healthy. Good true education because education can make us think and use our minds. Intellectual development that makes us think critically and make us view the world asks the question of whether the system the world is running is good enough or not. And these can only be attained by getting a good true source of education. Reading not only science but other subjects like politics, novels, philosophy and thinking about the morality of the society. To be intellectual is to think whether that is true or wrong or it is true or wrong so why it is. That’s how the mind can become healthy through consciousness. If one is in the trap of society and the world and accepting everything that the world is telling without thinking that it is right or wrong probably have an unhealthy mindset because they are unconscious. Thoughts are good and also bad. This depends on the thoughts themselves. Many thoughts can come into our minds sometimes good and sometimes bad. But it is also important to not get addicted to the bad thoughts to the thoughts which can make our life damage. Because thoughts are addictive. The thoughts can become addictive and can also become a source to run the life. We need to control our thoughts and make them not addictive. We are running in seeking knowledge from others. We read different books research about different scientists read their theories and make us knowledgeable. That is good. But these are the discoveries and opinions of others. They are essential for us in this world and also in making us conscious about things. But as long as we don’t discover our thoughts and truth within knowledge. We can only contain knowledge of others. Discoveries of others. The true gold is inside us. We just need to dig out the sand and discover the gold inside us. These thoughts and opinion of others can become a tool to dig the sands and brings the gold. We can use them. But we must find the gold. To make our own opinions. To discover our own. It is important for us to look within and to dig for the gold. Other's opinions can be the tool for us to dig out the goal. We need to know as much as we can and make them the tools to dig for the gold. Apply one's knowledge in this world. we need to apply all of the knowledge we find in this. But the knowledge should be true and should be worthy. We should be able to make people aware of our knowledge of ourselves. No matter what you face if one thinks that the knowledge is true so one should struggle for it in form of ideologies. Comparison is often seen in this world. people often compare people. With each other but comparison is itself not true at all. One cant is compared with others. Religious people often discuss religious topics with the people. they often say to people to do that and to do that. But if we see them we find out that they don’t apply these applications at all. They try to tell the people about doing the kinds of stuff. But they don’t apply these. These religious people are dangerous. They should apply all the things that they say to others. One should also make religion practical. They should apply religion in their practical life. People often see others and say that they want to choose their way of life. But they choose the wrong decision about choosing other paths and their life. People should be able to choose their path to make their path. They should be able to choose a different path from others. A different successful path in short. People often depend on others in their journey that maybe they can help them and because of their dependency on others. They can never achieve their destination. No one in this world can take another place. Every human in this world is unique. Yes, one can adapt their way of the life but they can never be them again. If one thinks that they want to be them. They cant be yes they can choose their way of life. They can be much better than them or not better at all. But they cant be them. We need to know the emotions inside. It is also important for us to keep these emotions equal. They should maintain equality in their emotions. They should not have one emotion to affect other emotions. Every emotion is important in life. We should understand them. Sometimes these emotions can change into other emotions. Sometimes so much tolerance can change into anger. People often tolerate so much that their tolerance can become angry. So people need to maintain equality in emotions. Because taking hold of one emotion can be dangerous and lead to effect other emotions too. Bad thoughts come from the unconscious mind. The unconscious mind is the part of the mind that can irritate us a lot. If we don’t let ourselves fight with it. It gives us extremely bad thoughts and can be irritating for us. But it has the solution that our mind contains and that is the conscious mind. The conscious mind is the only way to tackle these thoughts and we should be able to use our conscious mind. Loving is very important for us. It is really important for everyone to love each other. It is the emotions that can maintain life and is good. But in Osho's point of view love should not be selfish. Love should be selfless. One should not be selfish at all in the point of love. They should not even say that I love you. Because that means that you are loving and you want to be aware that people that you love them. Love should not be selfish. Love is to give and not to take at all. It is an important emotion in the world but the world is demanding love to be taken also. People are just like this that when you love them not all but some of them they will not give you the value you deserve at all and can be s burden to you. It is important to love and also to be wise. Remember when one can give in this world that things come back to one. Yes, some people can give a lot but they should not worry that they get everything in the world in the way they deserve. These are lessons that I shared. This book is really good to read and also reveals so many things about us humans
I waited before reading this book - it felt like I was not ready for it when I first bought it. I am sure that if I had read it one year ago I would have not been able to fully appreciate it. It was a pleasant reading overall, gave me so many insights, and taught me some valuable lessons. I did not particularly enjoy the recurring repetition of the concepts, though it's understandable since all that it's written in the book are excerpts of his oral meditations/seminars. That being said, I did not give a higher rating because I don't agree with some of the points he was trying to make (i.e. corporal punishment just to name one)

This book is about dropping our energy from our minds to our naval. We tend to live in our heads which isn’t really living. Apparently our minds are too tense and our hearts are not tense enough. By correcting this, we can drop our energy to the naval. We typically develop will from the gut. Meditation is the answer. Relaxing the body and the mind and listening is the technique described in this book. Mindful breathing during this relax with a breath that moves the belly instead of just the upper lungs. The past on love is pretty good. Basically we don’t know what love is. Of course, a lot of people will discredit this and think they know love and they are loving. I tend to feel that Osho is right on with what he says. I would probably rate this book in the top ten of Osho books I’ve read. It’s good, precise and short. I think if one is looking for more depth, Nowhere to Go but In, is a better selection. Next Osho book... Glimpses of a Golden Childhood Very exciting for this one. Only a couple Osho books left and I’ve saved the best for last.
My fav quotes (not a review): - There is sex in animals but not sexuality, so even the sex of animals is a beauty, a joy. The sexuality of man is ugly because sex has become a thought process in his mind. He thinks even about sex. - A man can eat a meal, eating is very good – but if a man thinks about food for twenty-four hours then the man is mad. Eating is absolutely right, it is very necessary, one has to eat, but if somebody thinks about food for twenty-four hours then the centers of this man have become disturbed. He is using his mind to do the work of his stomach.
I find it an ideal book to start your journey of mindfulness and awareness. The way he describes the body and how you can deeply connect with it and become more present was my favourite part of this book.
The three key takeaways are 1. Our mind has got cluttered with too many thoughts. 2. We are allowed to feel what we feel...anger, hatred included 3. We shouldn't suppress our feelings but work on them 4. We need to channelize our energies in the right direction
Osho, in this book, teaches us how to find the way in ourselves, the way to the true source of life. A surprising book, ahead of its time and, in Osho's style, full of common sense teachings.
